Apple's products store your data, which means that going from Apple to an Apple competitor is a PITA. Your iPhone has your entire address book, your text history with everyone you care about, all the apps you regularly use, probably logged in with passwords you might not even remember and a bunch of other things I haven't even thought of. If you want to get a new iPhone, all that stuff synchs to your new one seamlessly. If you want to switch to an Samsung phone or whatever, you have to do all that manually, on top of the minor but annoying differences in getting used to a different operating system.

Apple's lack of repairability is a serious problem, and one of the reasons I do not consider their products. No cell phones or tablets are *good* from a repair or upgrade standpoint, but Apple's are particularly hostile to those things.
In laptops, there's a lot more variety and some of them are quite open in terms of being able to repair or upgrade them. This is getting worse rather than better, but the market isn't totally broken yet and some outfits - notably and somewhat surprisingly Dell - are trying to promulgate new standards that will make it better (especially for high-speed memory, so it doesn't have to be soldered down).
If I have no chance at all to fix it, I don't really want whatever it is if it's going to cost me a meaningful amount of money.

Did a little searching on this. Seems to be a thick layer of illite clay from an ancient lakebed, enriched to the tune of 1-2% lithium by hydrothermal fluids. Takes a lot of energy, and a lot of acid (also requiring energy to manufacture) to liberate the lithium from the clay. Can it be done cheaply enough to sell the lithium produced at market price?
Incidentally, they claim "40 to 50 million tons of lithium metal". But the lithium is a minor component of clay minerals, and is not in the metallic state. It's just ions bound up in a crystal lattice. That same body of clay probably contains over a hundred million tons of aluminum, and nobody bothers extracting aluminum from clay, although it theoretically could be done. Costs too much.

I don't own any Apple products, but I'm an admirer of Steve Jobs. He knew exactly what he wanted by the time he came back to Apple, and he made sure he surrounded himself with the most talented people, and drove them to greatness on the strength of his personality, and his aesthetic. Yes, he cultivated a cult following, both inside and outside the company, but former employees that worked closely with him said they did their best work with him. You don't see that very often - at all. Only a handful of executives are in Jobs' class.

Jobs was interesting. The guy was the walking example of the saying that madness and genius are two sides of the same coin. He revolutionized computers, movies, music, phones and invented, essentially, the Star Trek tri-corder. But he was overbearing, compulsive, and just plain nuts.
He was also careful to leave his politics at home. I'm sure he was far left, but he was mostly dedicated to making money by building stuff people wanted. He wanted competency. Tim Cook was and is a supply chain genius, and their new "vision pro" will be an interesting thing.
They kowtow to the environmental stuff, but at least are pretending to take people's privacy seriously (which is far more than any other big tech company does anymore).

The former assertion remains to be seen. Tim Cook is a major player in the high-tech concentration in Red China. He was fairly early on outsourcing end-to-end manufacturing there, and was able to very, very competently leverage the relationship with Foxconn.
This made Apples truckloads of cash, but it also left them fairly non-diversified in terms of manufacturing and assembly. Apple is still the most China-dependent of most of the tech majors, and Apple - under Cook's leadership - has been the slowest to diversify out of China. They're doing it now - and Cook (and Foxconn) is doing a good job of publicizing it, but the fact remains that Apple is behind the 8 ball now. Samsing, Toshiba, Dell, HP, etc. - the list goes on - are all less China-dependent and have much wider and or more robust industrial chains than Apple does. Apple is playing catch-up. It will also probably be successfully able to do so, but they're followers in this current round of supply chain development, not leaders.

Not exactly. The "genius bar" doesn't do much if any repair anymore. They swap out the unit and sync the data around. if they don't have one to replace it (and then send your broken one back to a facility that can fix it or replace the component, and put it back into the stream), they can't do anything. I don't think Apple stores do actual repair anymore.

Once upon a time this was not the case. I had an iphone 3 and was completely taken aback at how intuitive the UI was on the iPhone. My daughter was young and had no issues navigating it. However, iTunes was complete garbage and turned me off of the platform completely. Now anytime I have to look at an iPhone, it's completely baffling to me how much their UI has regressed.
