Ad Agency Behind Tranheuser-Busch's Dylan Mulvaney "Promotion" Slashes Staff by 5%
Back in June, the New York Post reported that "Captiv8," the "influencer marketing firm" widely believed to be behind Tranheuser-Busch's Dylan Mulvaney promotion -- a suspicion that T-B refuses to confirm or deny -- was in a "panic" after the enormous and unending backlash that followed the hiring of the transfluencer.
An eight-year-old marketing firm out of San Francisco was responsible for Bud Light's partnership with Dylan Mulvaney -- and the disastrous tie-up sent the firm into "serious panic mode," The Post has learned. ... "There was a lot of chatter" among employees about what blowback the firm might face over the botched campaign, according to the source. "Internally, the company was in serious panic mode," the source added. ... It couldn't immediately be learned whether Captiv8 -- which claims to have a database of more than 1 million influencers on YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and Twitter -- was also responsible for the now-infamous Bud Light beer can that bore Mulvaney's image.I had that article open in a tab for a couple of weeks. I didn't post it because while the claim was made that Captiv8 was in "serious panic mode," there was no reporting that they had suffered any tangible negative results, apart from rumors that Bud Light had fired them. It seemed to me that the story could be made-up bullsh*t -- I mean, how can you confirm or dispel a claim that a company is in "serious panic mode"? What is the exact definition of that? How many people at the company need to be "panicked," and to what level must they be panicked? I wanted something real and confirmable to establish the company really was "panicked." Well, now, after two months, I can finally post that article. Because Captiv8 fired 5% of its staff in July. This story is dated today but I guess the media only just confirmed the firings. The swells in the agency took a trip to Cannes just before cutting staff. Which is a very TikTok Influencer move.
It also wasn't clear whether Captiv8 played a direct role in producing Mulvaney's TikTok video. Captiv8 didn't respond to repeated requests for comment.
... Subramanian has made himself available for media interviews as an expert on influencer marketing. In February, he spoke to the Wall Street Journal about the importance of viral videos around blockbuster ad events including the Super Bowl. ... Captiv8 appears to have returned to "business as usual" following the initial panic set off by the Mulvaney crisis, according to the source. Bud Light parent Anheuser-Busch InBev, which also didn't respond to requests for comment, has been tight-lipped on the origins of the ill-fated Mulvaney campaign.

As hamitchell pointed out, that is 6.5% of 200, or the total number of employees was closer to 250.
That is beside the point, though. What I find *much* more interesting is both that a company who's main value proposition is "we have a big database of social media influencers" has hundreds of employees and rakes in enough cash to charter private jets for junkets to France and that such a small number of them were fired.
That scale and that amount of money to effectively act as a middleman between corporations and YouTubers/TikTokers/etc. is astonishing. It makes little sense to me. It almost makes me wonder if "Captiv8" is a front for some other activity.

It's a beautiful film, but the decision to use part of the vertigo soundtrack in a pivotal climactic scene was a huge mistake for me. All I think of is the far superior film, and the disturbing emotions that iconic soundtrack evokes. Yes, the score is lush and romantic. But it completely ruins the tone the Artist is trying to achieve at that moment in the film.
Supposedly it was filler soundtrack at first, but the director loved it so much he kept it in. But it honestly made me question if he'd actually seen the original and knew the actual themes and tone of the original.

It would be interesting to know what value for their services they have managed to create in marketing to these big firms. And how much they shave off the top of what the "influencer" receives.
But people are paying big money for virtual real estate in these Meta alternate universes...in a world where that is true the idea that some exec at AB believes the hype that your Super Bowl ad campaign will fail unless you also pay to have it cross promoted on all these other platforms seems possible. And that they would pay a lot, not having that infrastructure/reach on their own.

It's all one big circle-jerk marketing exercise. Notice how the name of the charter airline -- actually not a charter, but a business-only airline -- is prominently mentioned? The airline probably is in on the marketing and did this gratis or at a steep discount, to get its name out there. Everyone on the flight was probably tagging the airline in social media posts like mad.

One of the credit card companies is proudly advertising that they are the first to let you put your chosen name on your credit card vs your birth name, so that trans people won't be attacked in a store if their name clashes with their chosen gender. They imply getting hurt over this is a common thing for trans people. I think the company was Mastercard.

These "agencies" also make money off their clients. Until the client makes it pretty big, they are effectively paying the agency for exposure and opportunity. It's the old "Model House" model, where the agency houses dozens of aspiring models in a house, charges them rent, and makes tons of money as their landlord. Don't want to do that because you think it's a scam (which it is)? Well then good luck getting bookings or exposure.

The in-house team has full control over the relationship. Often, they're just wanting the agency to execute their strategy, not actually provide creative.

Might be able if you pivot into a quality microbrew type with a throwback look - a Cinci Brewery years back did that with Christian Moerlein - resurrecting a brewery that closed in the prohibition years in the early 80s. It had a late 1800s drawn label art, played classical music in the advertising and was a pretty good light lager.

And one other thing I'll add is the agencies are usually getting a cut of the side action by photographers, videographers, hair, makeup, etc. That's big business. You want a nice set of portraits for your portfolio? That'll be $2,500 or more. But can't I do this myself? Sure, sure you can. But this particular photographer and this particular makeup gal are recommended by the agency, and if you want to get yourself noticed at this agency, then you'd be wise to hire them.

RON DESANTIS It’s impossible to imagine how DeSantis could fall further, but his refusal to answer the simple question, “Did Mike Pence do the right thing on Jan. 6?” showed once again how weak and fearful a campaign he’s running. Beyond that, did he say anything memorable, anything that really got the crowd going?
OTHER CANDIDATES. There were other candidates there, but I forgot who they were and no one cared.
