The New York Times was excited about the GOP debates

After all the caterwauling about our sacred elections and their importance to Our Democracy since November of 2020, I was surprised to see the graphic above show up on Twitter (or X). But Steven Hayward found more: NY TIMES LETS THE MASK SLIP

The late Tom Bethell used to point out in his American Spectator columns how denizens of Washington DC -- people we now regard as the shock troops of the administrative state -- regarded elections as a nuisance, because the results could interfere with their plans to extend expert control over everyone and everything, especially if those icky Republicans won (though usually not for long). Well, the New York Times has sort of come around the this position . . .

They thought better of this headline, apparently because it was too candid about the progressive view that the people--the ones who live south of Richmond anyway--are unfit actually to govern themselves. Within a few hours the Times changed it as follows:

The gist of the article is that the wrong people run and are elected to office. The proposed remedy? Choose our government officials by lottery! Gee -- why didn't some ancient writer not think of that? Like, maybe Aristotle, in The Politics, Book IV, 1294be.

Does that mean we would be able to replace members of the Deep State by lottery periodically, too?

On the other hand, it is nice to see the Times start to come around to William F. Buckley Jrs point view that he'd rather be governed by the first 2000 names in the Boston telephone directory than the faculty of Harvard. . .

Hayward goes on to make a marvelous corollary point about education.

Coincidentally, a "friend of a friend" on social media (of a progressive persuasion) saw that I had posted the first NYT graphic. He paraphrased WFB to leave out the part about the Harvard faculty and suggest that the quote was about members of Congress. So I happen to have what WFB wrote about this point (though this was not the first time he had made the point about the Boston phone book and the Harvard faculty):

I am obliged to confess that I should sooner live in a society governed by the first two thousand names in the Boston telephone directory than in a society governed by the two thousand faculty members of Harvard University. Not, heaven knows, because I hold lightly the brainpower or knowledge or generosity or even the affability of the Harvard faculty: but because I greatly fear intellectual arrogance, and that is a distinguishing characteristic of the university which refuses to accept any common premise.

He wrote this in 1963 in Rumbles Left and Right: A Book about Troublesome People and Ideas. I'm not sure what Buckley meant by "any common premise", but I'm afraid that since 1963, the Harvard Faculty has become quite capable of accepting some really stupid ideas in common with each other.

Do we vote too much?

Meanwhile, The Atlantic suggests that we vote too much. In contrast to the NYT piece, its focus was on local measures, ballot initiatives, recalls, etc. In the "nature abhors a vacuum" category, homeowners associations were mentioned.

America's voting problem is primarily a local one. When compared with that of peer nations, our general-election turnout is actually middle-of-the-pack. And although more voting at the federal level is desirable, some political-science research casts doubt on whether the results of national elections would significantly change if everybody showed up. Not so in local elections, where the electorate is remarkably unrepresentative.

The timing of the graphic to coincide with the first GOP debate, along with the one from the NYT suggesting that elections are "bad for democracy", is sort of disconcerting. And I'm not so sure that the intense focus on presidential politics leaves much room for the study of local politics even if local elections are scheduled along with federal elections.

What do you think about timing of local elections? I, and others here, have suggested that maybe we need to focus more of our attention locally. How do we do that? Of course, The Atlantic doesn't want too many conservatives and Senior Citizens showing up to vote on local issues.

Caught this quote from Walter Kirn today. It reminded me of the NYT changing their headline. Along with the surprises and dramatics that accompanied the debates and the arrest of Trump:

I strongly suggest that those wishing to make sense of current events ignore the headlines and delve into studies of mythology, ancient religion, psychoanalysis, and classic lit. We have left the mundane sphere of "politics" and are in a vaster, deeper, more symbolic domain.

10 I think we do vote too much. We have primaries then general every two years. Then in off years we have municipal elections. And sometimes primaries for those municipal elections. And on top of that we have random ballot measures in March or July or sometimes just out of the blue on a random date. And sprinkle all that with special elections if someone retired or dies in office. There is always a yard sign for some election going on. At least around me.

It gets exhausting and it’s part of why the voting rate outside of presidential elections is abysmally low.

I’m not saying we need fewer elections, just more consolidation of elections. Fewer election days, same number of things we vote on.

17 I've been thinking about the DeSantis phenomenon, and I realize unlike some people around here, I'd already given up on any of these people before any of this, so I think I'm more objective here.

He's not a bad guy, obviously. But whatever compelled him to join the fray, he quickly learned he wasn't allowed to say some things, while he was required to say other things, and so, whoever this guy is, what we're seeing now isn't him. It's whoever is backing him.

And I believe the lackluster effort he's put forth is at least in part due to him realizing, after he got in, that he wasn't going to be able to be who he is. So he's been half-assing it, somewhat to his credit.

20 Let's discuss primaries with an insane number of candidates. WA state had 26 candidates for governor and top two vote getters move on, regardless of party. (We did get a repub, Culp, against Inslee). These are vanity runs and unlikely to do anything but have voters use name recognition for their choice.

It’s not exactly unprecedented to run, lose, run again and win a 2nd time.

I agree that up til now, his efforts have seemed half-hearted. A charitable explanation is that he's just doing a dry run for 2028. who knows, but me real fear is that there will never be any 2028 elections. Not even sure about 24 at this point.

29 As far as "modern" books go-and it wasn't one- "How To Win Friends and Influence People" by Dale Carnegie-was not a bad one. It contains helpful advice for some people I know who have been really shy and for whom it's hard to initiate conversations.

I have noticed, the things that don't get made into movies, it's astonishing sometimes. Until you realize the powers that be there have always been bought and paid for, by one faction or another. Currently it seems to be the pedos, more than the commies, but yeah. Nixon is now reduced in the popular culture, to two things: Watergate and red scare stuff.

42 one downside of too many elections that I've observed is that when there's a local election for say, school board members or some bond proposal, only a handful of people ever show up to vote - meaning whoever can get some level of organized support for their idea or pet project wins that vote easily. Sometimes that's good, sometimes it isn't.

It's a flex. To be able to say "I hate this guy because he represents/reminds me of..." and if you can put "white" or "straight" in your hate diagram, you are allowed.

71 My burg had a bond up for a vote. Turnout was 16%. And it easily passed. Because the 16% who did show up were all beneficiaries of the bond, ie govt employees.

This is by design. We need a law that all elections need to be together. None of this one off shit that nobody ever knows about.

I haven't yet finished his Tucker interview, but it's pretty darned amazing listening to the man speak. He's got a genius about him, and those who miss it... well, they miss it.

Tucker asked him more than once, what if they can't stop you by other means, are you concerned they will try to kill you? And Trump just basically dodged it, but the way he dodged it spoke volumes.

Essentially by not answering the direct question he was saying, "yeah, it do think that's a real possibility, and I'm going to do what I'm doing anyway."

I know it's frustrating for those who don't really get the guy, but yeah, that's how I saw it.

School board elections are particularly troublesome. Normal people with who aren't "professional educators" or "learning facilitators" [spit], are at a disadvantage in knowing which bums to kick out.

In the past, I've used a ranking system of degrees-of-hell-no to vote in school board or city council elections. Anyone employed in government was an automatic hell no, followed by anyone who is running to "support our teachers" (99% hell no), followed by anyone who uses the term "stakeholders" unironically (98% hell no), followed by anyone who has a picture of an apple on their yard signs (97% hell no).

It's very rarely that you find people with positive views of HOAs. It is mostly horror stories of fees and fines, combined with busybodies, if not out-right embezzlers. Of how their freedom to do what they want with their land and their property is curtailed by the HOA's.

The funny thing is, these same brain-damaged children-in-adult-bodies will be the first to vote for big government. The HOAs are just government at a tiny, yet very local level. Literally at your front door. And you have the right to push for votes and to kick the bums out. Try doing that with the federal bureaucracy, with its unelected horde of agents pushing rule and regulation after rule and regulation.

Wonder how many people could cross the logical chasm that voting for big-government politicians (mostly D's, but R's as well) is the same as your local HOA telling you each and every thing you must or must not do, along with the waste and the secrecy they try to hide behind.

140 Nefarious is pretty good. Some here didn't like because the majority of the movie is filmed in an interrogation room. In that way it's sort of like a play. The acting is terrific. But it's true, there are no shootouts or exploding cars, etc.

It's too expensive to get involved in anything other than (to me) meaningless town councils, focus groups and the like with no power and typically with no backchannel to the actual local government. The HOA's around the country have more bite.

Even here in our rural slice of Kentucky I see the same faces for local, county and some city positions that can be construed as "government positions of authority." Anyone running in opposition is usually way, way out of touch with how the "system" works.

It's a systemic problem that affects our entire political institution. It cannot be fixed with "votes" or "elections." Those are corrupted as well.

Anyways, the problem isn't this or term limits or whatever, the problem is our third branch has lawyers set up as the gatekeepers. We need a vigorous defense of plain-language laws, in a quantity that doesn't weasel around the need to effectively publish them (hat tip to Hammurabi here), and an iron-clad concept of citizens having standing to challenge them.

You cannot have rule of law when a man cannot read all of the laws, reading 8 hours a day for a lifetime - and then can't challenge those that run afoul of the Constitution.

That has been our obsession for YEARS. Now, I have my own views on this that I can’t get into here - just not enough time for the specifics - but consolidation of supply chains can go a long way. A good chunk of that $12T could be saved doing that alone. By the way, perhaps you missed out on the KC-46 replacing the KC-135s? Or the fact that we could have spent some money on fully upgrading to the F-22, but His Majesty The Shahinshah whined in 2009 that since we spend more money on defense than the rest of the world combined.

Oh, and when something like 9/11/01 happens, call me crazy but my response isn’t curl up into a ball and 1) bawl 2) pout 3) whine.

He went to law school, worked as a lawyer for some time, decided he didn't like that and went back to medical school and became a psychiatrist. He's also an Othodox Jew, so I expect that he may believe in demons. He certainly believes in God, so I don't think it's a question of psychiatry automatically being a lesser medical specialization. I also asked him once why he hadn't retired. He said, "Because I need to pay off my students loans" which I thought was admirable of him.

Unless one thinks killing thousands and thousands and thousands of foreigners, and bringing home Americans in body bags, or broken beyond repair, is an accomplishment.

I have no doubt there are many little beetles in many big weapons manufacturing R and D departments, coming up with ALL SORTS of new and spectacular ways to kill people. But in the mean time, we've run out of ammo, and we can't build anything that doesn't have Chi Nah parts that are necessary for their production.

All it would take, to unwoke this, would be a return to previous TO&E. Especially regarding rank. Our military is so top heavy now it's ridiculous. We have the same full Pentagon that supervised right around a hundred divisions. Now they supervise around ten, plus enough brigades for maybe another ten.

That's the problem. Then look at the rank in a giving brigade. Way too many officers. Way too few junior enlisted. Hence, the problem. Same problem as any company that lets HR run wild.

It's gotten pretty good reviews and is cheap and short. It does a good job of revealing the bleakness of the worker's paradise.

Sorry, don't buy it. There was a US Fleet group operating in the area on 'exercises' just at the time of the planting and blowing up that would make it very dangerous for any other players. Ukr SF might be compatible with the leaks from various US players like Newland about how the pipes would fail, but not the preknowledge Biden had. Also, the British PM at the time sent a message to Blinken that it had gone off before the news was public.

Any other group besides one sanctioned and organized by the US ran the risk of a real investigation and payback. Ukraine's terrorism is pretty much land based and directed at Russia, including pipelines overland.

Perpetual war might have worked, but we didn't do that. The army isn't good at and has no doctrine for occupation and peacekeeping so its the worst thing to try and make it do once you can't just kill everyone around.

Rome in its heyday was pretty good at peacekeeping and occupation, converting the upperclass to its values and coopting them and when that didn't work leveraging its efforts through client kings and the like for centuries.

The Neo came when the end of the Soviet Union when rather than living in the real world where we could change our reflexes and expenses to reflect the actual situation they decided it was a lot easier to keep doing the exact same stuff and foment wars instead.
