The painting has a "first crisp day of fall" look to it. I'd hate to work in that office during summertime, esp. if, in Hopper's day, it had no A/C.

They did quite a few things right. In one episode, a girl, I think it's Don Draper's daughter, watches an episode of the Man From U.N.C.L.E. and being, ah, inspired by Illya Kuryakin. The MfU episode being shown is roughly correct for the date (late winter/early spring 1965) given for the MM episode.

One of my guilty pleasures is reading the AKC Secretary's Page for disciplinary actions taken against exhibitors, judges and breeders for various kinds of lamentable, if sometimes entertaining, violations.

Event violations are often of the heat-of-the-moment type, like criticizing a judge's decision. These are often given a reprimand or an event suspension of a month or two and a fine of $100. Then there are the ones that make you say, "Damn, wish I'd been there to see that."

"Action was taken by the Greater Ocala Dog Club for conduct at its November 16, 2013 event. Mr. X was charged with verbal abuse (inappropriate, abusive or foul language) directed personally to a judge and disruptive behavior at an event. The Staff Event Committee reviewed the event committee’s report and the penalty was set at a five year event suspension and a $10,000 fine, effective November 16, 2013.

Apparently the state is paying towns to ban cheap and effective fossil fuels and only allow electric for heating/cooking in new construction - but only a few towns at a time...likely because its expensive and people that live there hate the idea.

But the way the newspaper covers this is people are being denied the option to...ban fossil fuels.

Note you can build a new all electric house/apartment. This is just banning people from NOT doing that. And the leftists call this freedom...

Naturally, since it was my idea and not theirs, my lords and masters pooh-poohed it. Now it's that new hot thing.

When I interviewed for my current job in '18, I should have investigated and found out what my predecessor was making. I was offered about $5K/year less. True, she had something like thirty years' experience and seniority, but I had sixteen, and my future boss was aware of the quality of my work.

And what they offered was one heck of a jump up from what I was making.

I’ve been involved with that too. They started up a kaizen program, the hard part was quantifying savings. In many cases they wanted operators to offer suggestions for fixes, estimate the savings and them implement them.

In a lot of cases I ended up doing the work. Surprise surprise, simple small changes typically don’t result in big savings.

I love operators because most have some good ideas but getting from A to Z is often extremely difficult and not worth the expense.

Heh. Promotions even with an increase in pay usually aren’t worth it. At least for me they haven’t been. I got one bigly big exciting promotion offered to me once. The bump in salary was $20k. The bump in headaches would have also been about 20k. So I said thanks but nah. And everyone acted like I was a crazy person for not accepting it.

Posted by: Montec at August 07, 2023 10:31 AM (BqIHC)

The last promotion I received was pretty much just like that. Moved up to Director of Operations, with about a 24K bump. This, after we'd just moved the operation 60 miles north into the N Dallas area. Very nice, nice enough that I started the process of relocating closer to work.

6 weeks later, they decided that they didn't need a Director of Operations after all, so I was laid off, while I was in the middle of my move. Had to call it off and move back to fucking California to start over with family, all just in time for the gorram China Lung Rot lockdowns.

3 1/2 years later and I'm making more with the new company that I started than I've ever made as an employee. A lot happier now that I only have to answer to my customers, which is as it should be.
