TFSM, if you mean me and the Occupied West Bank, as I call it, thanks for asking! Black Stirling has his 1st anniversary with me today; it was just a year ago that I drove four hours to see him (and, it turned out, to adopt him). He's grown into a big, solid, affectionate adult who still plays like a kitten and frequently kneads me as if I were his mother.

Dagny, his two weeks-younger "sister," is growing slowly, as Siberians do, and is due to have her snip surgery in 12 days. She bounds around and loves to chase toys and play with her brother. Last night she somehow climbed to the top shelf of my kitchen closet and I had a time getting her down.

Posted by: Doof at June 11, 2023 06:05 AM (4b49z)

13 I'm up early because I have to decide whether I'll wait until it's hot and go to the nearby Walmart where they have a real register open after 8 am, go to the nearby chain store earlier and pay $$$ more but have real checkouts, or drive down the highway for 25 minutes to another Walmart. That one has always had at least one register open even at 7 am. Two weeks ago, their worker just didn't show up, and I was forced (cursing under my breath) to give them my labor at the self-checkout.

Buying groceries shouldn't be like this unless they're dirt cheap. And they ain't.

No. Wait. Buying groceries *should not* be like this, full stop.

Every grocery store should be like stop and shop that has hand scanners that you can carry around with you as you shop and scan and bag as you go.

You can typically get your weekly shopping trip over and done with in less than twenty minutes.

I do get mine done in about 20 -- if I go early. It's that I resent them getting my labor for free at the self-checkout. I'm not getting a price break and yet they save the cost of a worker. They scan the stuff much faster than I do. Plus I will not have my own phiz presented to me on that screen as I do their work for them. Sure, you're photographing me in every aisle as I go, but it's not so *in my face* as it is at the self-checkout.

I guess I'll wait until it's sweltering hot (about 7:15), hit the self-serve car wash on the same avenue, then go to the WM for about 8, when they (usually, maybe) have a register open. Grrrrr.

'Tis indeed. We used to have Breaux Marts all around town, but most are gone, and none on my side of the river. Rouse's is more $$ than WM, but was less than things like Whole Foods or Fresh Market, and I don't have an Aldi's or Trader Joe's close by.

Ah, well. I'll go in a bit, wash the car, and hit one of the Rouse's; they open at 7. I'll spend a few more bucks, but I'll escape the worst of the heat and spend less in fuel.

45 Recently went to an Aldi with self checkout. Didn't like it.
One of the things Aldi does best is the checkout process: multiple bar codes on packaging so the clerk will get a beep from the scanner on the first pass.

46 At Mr K's, there are no self checks. If a line should form, they call another checker. They usually ask "paper or plastic". I asked her "what would you do if I said both?" She laughed and said she could probably do that. Selection in limited. But they make it worthwhile to shop there.

The one-stop shop concept for sure. In the early '60s NO East was poised, everyone thought, to be the next big expansion suburb. So the big big Schwegmann's store opened out on Hwy. 90, and people who lived farther out could pick up everything in one shot. Dad could gas up the car and grab a quick beer in the store while Mom and the kids shopped for food and toys, and the kids or Dad could get a haircut at the barber, and there was a TV lounge where they could park the kids for a bit to watch Saturday morning cartoons. True; I lived it.

82 Good morning everyone. Thank you krak.

Saint of the Day
St. Barnabas (1st c.) was a Jew from the island of Cyprus who was given the name Joseph at birth. He is mentioned by name in the New Testament. A convert to the Christian faith in Jerusalem, he sold his property and preached the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles alongside St. Paul the Apostle and St. Mark the Evangelist. He was given the surname Barnabas, meaning 'Son of Exhortation' and was highly esteemed among the Christian leaders at Jerusalem and Antioch, almost ranked among the twelve Apostles themselves. St. Luke said of him, "...for he was a good man, full of the Holy Ghost and of Faith." It was Barnabas who vouched for the genuineness of St. Paul's conversion and had him accepted as a Christian by the other Apostles. Barnabas was the cousin of St. Mark, and Barnabas famously disputed with St. Paul over bringing Mark along on their missionary journey, which caused the two famed preachers to part ways and travel separately as recorded in the Acts of the Apostles. They were later reconciled. Barnabas was eventually stoned to death around the year 61 A.D. His feast day is celebrated on June 11.

109 Good morning, Hordlings!

Here’s some good news fora Sunday or any day:

The young gent who stopped the stabbing rampage in a park in France the other day is a devout Catholic and is on a months long pilgrimage to visit as many of France’s cathedrals as he can. All he had to fight with were his back packs, so he used them as he chased the attacker. He is being hailed as the ‘back pack hero’ in France. When interviewed, he said he believes that he was put in that spot at that time for a reason and he acknowledged & credits the guidance and protection of the Blessed Mother for helping him.

( that part of the interview is often left out of any news items both here and in France…

151 Every grocery store should be like stop and shop that has hand scanners that you can carry around with you as you shop and scan and bag as you go.

Yeah, that works in a low-trust society that we have become.

A long time ago big retailers have been pushing RFID on all packaging with the goal that a customer lobs things into a cart and at the end pushes the cart through a scanner and is given an invoice that must be paid before leaving. This allegedly would also identify items hidden on the body.

Shoplifters can be incredibly imaginative in ways to defeat these things. RFID technology still can't be deployed universally because what it is supposed to be stuck to varies too much for it to work.

This is where Amazon started fooling around with CV where hundreds of cameras monitor every removal and replacement of goods from the shelf and come up with a tally.

That isn't working either. Too many people just can't be trusted.

RF-blocking key fob cases, backpacks, and many sizes of bags in-between are sold on Amazon and elsewhere. The design purpose is to shield the contents from RF scanning of your devices to steal your info. They work well, unfortunately for brick-and mortar stores who once hoped RFID tags would reduce labor cost.

The kids clearly didn’t want to watch this pride video so the teacher threatened them with Saturday school to get them to watch it.

"Why are you showing this to kids?" one child in the class asks.

I am also thanakful for people who pray for the concerns lifted up here-both on the prayer thread an in other threads.

Heh, based Gen Z.
My son and his friends had a similar response to his HS's "anti-racism" assembly. They could laugh it off, but he was disturbed that they would force that stuff on younger kids.

El Nino is back, baby!!!

https://instapundit.com/589040/

A perfectly normal, natural, and well-known periodic weather event.

So, of course, the Scientifically Ignorant Lunkheads With Megaphones are going to start screaming about how this totally normal, natural, and well-known weather event and its consequences-

are caused by Man-Made Global Worming!!!! and Climate Change!!!!

Then Senile Joe, for His Legacy, y'all, will totally shutdown down all coal and gas power plants or takeaway gas automobiles, or slaughter all cattle and force bugs on everyone.....some lame-ass ignorant thing.

All because of a totally that a normal, natural, and well-known weather event and its consequences.

Yay!

Showed the video to my wife and she said, "If that was my kid they WOULD NOT be serving a detention". Trust me, she'd be in some faces.

I think we got enough in checking to cover bail.

I'm hoping to do the same. This getting up at 3 or 4 am for work has gotten old. Maybe I'll live large and stay up until . . . 10 pm! Wow! And sleep until 5:30 or 6:00! Par-tay!

I'm seriously looking at a battery and modest solar backup system for my home. When asked why by another couple my reply was I think the left is balls-to-the-wall on ending democracy, then we become Venezuela. The first thing they do is scale back refining to a single refinery - the one with the worst record for maintenance.

Even a young child may do this job and make money because it is so simple to complete and has higher pay than typical office occupations.
