I don't know about this one but the Rembrandt Committee has been getting off on downgrading works to "school of" for a long time.

61 I've looked at various enlargements of this painting over the years. You can get lost in trying to take in all the details, the many poses of the figures, the varied play of torchlight throughout the scene, and even what the image means historically. I have yet to plumb its depths.

Mrs. JTB saw it for real in Amsterdam. It is huge, 12 x 14.5 feet. She says it takes your breath away.

91 This work has a nice balanced mix of stillness and motion. The near-static posing of most of the figures in heavy verticals and horizontals contrasts with the sharp diagonals of the weapons. Also the figures are placed in random-seeming groups, like a normal, candid gathering. This allows a normally quiet group portrait to come alive. Also the splashes of contrasting color, most noticeably the white against the deep black, and some reds, browns and tans add to the activity. I can hear this painting.

104 The painting was controversial at the time for the most foolish of reasons - the Guard, who commissioned it, wanted it to be a painting that was little more than each of their individual portraits, standing together. Rembrandt showed them moving together, actually doing something, and many of their faces obscured because of that.

They had paid for the 17th Century equivalent of a velvet painting, and they were pissed off that Rembrandt gave them an incredible piece of great art instead.

A law was passed in KY a couple of years ago that dictated that the KY governor had to replace an open Senate seat with a member of the party of the person who last occupied the seat. The party's representatives in the legislature will offer up a list of three names that the KY governor would have to choose from.

This was a story discussed on the blog a couple of years ago. It became a thing because McConnell reportedly helped it through the process in the state, igniting rumors that he was either dying or going to retire. It was a thing for, like, a week. And then everyone forgets about it with the newest news cycle.

166 DU is all aflutter over Fox and Republicans turning on Jan 6th "traitors". The most interesting quotes so far:

Capitol Police Chief Tom Manger "...conveniently cherry-picked from the calmer moments of our 41,000 hours of video. The commentary fails to provide context about the chaos and violence that happened before or during these less tense moments,”

"I want to associate myself entirely with the opinion of the chief and the Capitol Police about what happened on January 6," McConnell said as he held up a copy of the letter. "It was a mistake, in my view, for Fox News to depict this in a way that’s completely at variance with what our chief law enforcement official here at the Capitol thinks.”

Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, said it’s “really sad to see Tucker Carlson go off the rails like that,” saying that he’s “joining a range of shock jocks that are disappointing America and feeding falsehoods.”

My main concern is that Garland upholds the rule of law and tosses that POS Trump in jail where he belongs. To hell with Tucker and his attempt at white washing this nightmare. We all know what we saw!

I am beginning to wonder if Tucker's days are not numbered the way they got rid of him at CNN when Jon Stewart exposed them as hurting the country.

Mitch and ALL the other Republican Senators had their chances, TWICE, to stop the out of control, Treasonous Corruption, and every last Republican Senator voted to find him not guilty and impeach him. You Republicans are all 100% behind DeSantis, who is, in many ways, much worse than Trump, if that is even possible.

I hope they read chapters about the infamous Night of the Long Knives. On second thought, I don't really care. They didn't vote to Remove the criminal fascist the first time.

280 It's quite funny how the dems seems to be coalescing on the "DeSantis is even worse than Trump!!!" messaging. Clueless to the obvious fact that if anyone listened to them (but we don't) then this serves to make DeSantis MORE popular, not less.

Trump makes a mistake of attacking DeSantis so much, he makes himself look like an ally of the Left when he does it, and it will hurt his support badly. He should follow the example of Ronald Reagan. Note that this is what DeSantis is doing, and its working for him.
Posted by: Tom Servo at March 09, 2023 10:09 AM

THIS times eleventy. Trumps mouth is one of his greatest assets, but one of his greatest liabilities. Yes. I'll still vote for Trump if he's the nom, in a heartbeat. IMHO Desantis has a better shot at winning a general though. He'll get more independents that aren't turned off by PDT's mouth.

Actually... now that I think about it, I hope Mitch lives to be 200, along with all the rest of the prominent cucks, the Bushes, Graham, all of them.

As I noted, his death will change nothing. And if he lives forever, I won't be subjected to the kind of State and Party lunacy we saw with McCain's 20-week Period of National Mourning and Remembrance for a True American Hero.

On the other hand, though... I think a lot of the governmedia's turgid fervor during that was situational, given The Maverick's extremely hostile relationship with Donald Trump. Other room-temperature Republicans may not get that, no matter how doggedly loyal they've been.

It would be nice to see these guys have sparsely attended ceremonies, unmourned by a nation who they have managed to alienate completely.

They were on a downward spiral before they went fat-positive. The effort was designed to try and appeal to the woke mob of a company already in decline.

Probably getting hurt by online sales like most retailers that were brick and mortar based.
========
Victoria's Secret does most of its sales by catalog order. I used to know a gal who was at their call center. (I remember those catalogs from back in the day, who needed girlie mags then?) Yeah, they've always gotten orders from plus-sized women, whether successful or not. the reason why the plus-sized campaign failed, possibly because Lane Bryant got theirs first, but probably because Victoria's Secret sells their image, and all women in their minds fit that image when they make the purpose. They want that image, not whatever reality they have. So yeah, the customers got turned off and went to some other store.

I was gobsmacked last night when Russell Brand, of all people (shown on Tucker last night) sat down and quickly gave a far more rational, thoughtful, and convincing explanation of our Covid response than any so called credentialed "expert" has done over the last 3 years. His point - our Covid response was focused on mandating all of the things that could be monetized by Pfizer (like the vaccines) and denigrating all of those things that could NOT be monetized by them, like Natural Immunity and Ivermectin. Everyone in the power structure made millions (if not billions) from the response, while all of us normies got screwed over.

My best guess - the administration is getting nervous now that all the evidence is showing that it was unquestionably the US who did it. We don't want to admit that openly to Germany, as their economy continues to collapse.

390 Gov. J.B. Pritzker said Wednesday that despite his million-dollar donations to two Illinois Supreme Court justices last year, they are independent and should not have to recuse themselves from two high-profile cases before them in which the governor is a defendant.

Pritzker donated a total of $2 million from two separate accounts to then-Illinois Supreme Court candidates Mary O’Brien and Elizabeth Rochford, $1 million each. Those candidates are now justices on the bench of seven who will hear separate challenges to the state's no-cash bail provision (next week) and to the state's gun ban and registry (in May). Pritzker signed both the SAFE-T Act and the gun ban into law and is a defendant in the lawsuits challenging their constitutionality.

No, they probably do have a ridiculous amount of cameras covering them. We're paying for it of course. But its not, 10,000 and the event was at most 4 hours of relevant footage.
=========
I dunno, it seems 3.5-4.5 hors of recorded footage times 10,000 security cameras in and around the Capitol Building and there's a total of 41,000 hours, give or take a thousand, of recorded footage. It's amazing really there's that much daily security footage-and more-in DC, but here we are. There's probably 40 hours of stuff that definitely shows up The Narrative, but that's why it was sorted through before Tucker Carlson went on the air. Also, about 4 hours maybe of Congresscritters getting the vapors, and panicking and running away from protestor-tourists, which of course is the real treason behind the squalling in opposition.

402 I saw one small bit of light in all this darkness last night. And that is-

Chris Rock's "Selective Outrage" comedy special on Netflix.

Now, it's not like CR pulled out a list and said, "Hey, here's a list of topics that the morons and ettes at AOSHQ will agree with exactly and will absolutely lo-o-ove the way I say it. Here we go!"

But, man, is this one whip smart comedy routine. Everybody's bubbles get popped. Some get popped with a delicate little pin-prick. Some get popped with a pickaxe. (F'rinstance Will Smith comes in for the pickaxe treatment at the end.) And in a funny manner. There are laughs and smiles throughout.

Rock is a master of taking an inflammatory topic like racism and bringing it right down to dinner table level, and then flipped around on the audience and their expectations/beliefs and have them laughing. It's like that throughout the whole show.

He's not conservative at all, but I think I'd describe him as an honest and common sense liberal. A very rare species these days.

I don't want to over sell but- Well worth your while to watch. Plenty of laughs and a bit of hope to brighten your times stuck in the Biden/Democrat Doldrums.

Not really Tom. Essentially, Trump is doing the classic define your potential rival before they can define you. For most of the people not politically aware (about 80 percent or so of the population), they are worried about getting through the next day and week, not what politicians are calling each other. People here may not like this because of their political and policy bent, but generally people are outcome based, not policy based.

Insults, etc. simply do not matter that much because essentially the general public views all politicians and politics as corrupt including DeSantis and Trump btw. What they want is what they perceive will be good for them--in 2024, it will be the economy and perhaps war/peace as major issues. That is what the primary and general will be over--not trannies, not edumacation, etc.

Technically true at the moment - but remember when Lloyd Bentsen accepted the offer to be VP candidate in 1988? Texas had a law at the time saying he had to give up his office to run, but the State Lege quickly changed that law as soon as he asked them to, so he ran for VP & for Texas Senator on the same ballot. (by special exemption from the legislature) The Florida Legislature will do the same thing if DeSantis askes them to; they're already talking about it.

Laws today are not written on stone, they're scribbled in the air by the sign language interpreters.

502 See my post above, Texas used to have the same law. In 1988, Lloyd Bentsen called the leaders of the Texas Legislature and said "hey, I don't really like that law, it crimps my style." 24 hours later the law was changed.
Posted by: Tom Servo at March 09, 2023 10:58 AM (r46W7)

and had they not changed it, Bentsen would have to resign

so, atm, Ron will have to step down

but it doesn't

Wanna bet it won't be a problem if he decides to run because the FL legislature will pass a law that he will sign that makes an exception for him?

Some scary numbers. Exactly 537 people in the Fed. Govt are elected. Out of something like 2 million Fed employees, not counting DOD.

That's 0.03% of the Fed Govt that is elected. Half that if DOD is included.

Given the amount of damage that the cartels do on both sides of the border, I'd be okay with it. If, if the true President was in the White House. I wouldn't trust the Potato Junta to do it right, even if they could be persuaded to take action. Which they won't, because not a one of them love the USA.

513 The key word in that Florida law is "candidate." Ron will not be running for both POTUS and governor in 2024. His current term ends in January 2027.

515 Way too early in the game of course, but I suspect that it will come down to what they've actually done, versus what they say. DeSantis is working to establish a series of successes (aka Disney, also recently the court win over Biden's immigration plans) Trump will be running on a legacy of failure while promising "next time will be different, I promise!" Posted by: Tom Servo
-----------------
Tom, this will be a referendum election on the Biden administration or Dems in general if Biden bows out (if there is any honesty in elections that permits a GOP win) not an open seat. The question will not be over policies that governors control but whether the GOP nominee can reverse the economic damage of the last four years plus including possibly a hot war with Russia or China.

Policy people want to point to policies but like in 2000, it really was whether you wanted the Clinton years to continue via Gore or whether you thought Bush would do better after a mild recession in 99-00. Bush's edumacation No Child Left Behind was hyped but every governor can point to some policy wins. The general public does not care that much about Reedy Creek even if they could understand it.

Has always been thus. Investigations and fingerpointing have existed as long as politicians think they can use them to further their political aims--often the aim is not the resolve the problem but instead to raise money and political support off of it. You find dismal examples of this in the Continental Congress for example including John Adams and his support of undermining George Washington at times.

One book that I wish people would read is by pollster Daniel Yankelovich. He describes how most voters have outcome preferences but due to experiences can develop policy preferences. One of his examples was Vietnam and how people began to care when it was becoming more and more costly to the US and then they became engaged in trying to figure out which politician proposed policies that they felt would fit their outcome preferences (peace and security of US).

No. In the first game it's mentioned in passing that some guys are gay. There are no quicktime events to press square to thrust or anything.
