Girl Picking Poppies
Daniel Ridgway Knight

In Flanders Fields

In Flanders Fields, the poppies grow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

-- Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae (1872-1918 )

45 I've been to the place where McCrea wrote Flander's Fields. It is a very moving place.

If you can visit there and truly absorb the meaning of what happened, then it is impossible to support war as a solution to national disagreements afterwards.

Millions of men died over years trying to move a small line in a 40 square mile area. Just an absolute horrid waste of human life for nothing.

A lot of places in this world I'll never visit, Dave. Just the way things are.

But a soldier, who's seen things, and seen just how ugly human beings can get, and how creative we are when it comes to destroying each other...well, can't get much more anti-war than us.

63 I went to see They Shall Never Grow Old when it came out. Brilliantly done. But one of the most striking things to me (besides the tragic youth of those who went to fight) was the stories recounted through letters at the end of the war, that the veterans' homecoming was far less exuberant than I'd thought; ranging from tepid to "Where have you been the past few years?"

Never Again seems to be a sentiment so easily forgotten.

67 Hello Bandersnatch !

Posted by: runner at November 11, 2022 09:42 AM (V13WU)

68 Related: Saint of the Day
St. Martin of Tours (c. 316-397 A.D.) was born into a pagan family in what is now Hungary. At the age of ten Martin joined the Church as a catechumen soon after Christianity was legalized across the Roman Empire. He joined the Roman cavalry at the age of fifteen. At one point during his time of service he encountered a poor beggar who lacked adequate clothing. St. Martin took his sword and cut his heavy woolen officer cloak in half, and gave the other half to the beggar. Following this act of charity, St. Martin had a vision in which he saw Jesus wearing the portion of his cloak he gave to the beggar. After this vision Martin sought baptism, at the age of eighteen, and proclaimed himself a soldier for Christ. He left the military and adopted the penitential life of a hermit.. St. Martin gained a reputation for holiness and performing miracles. As bishop he continued his austere life, destroyed pagan worship sites, and worked to spread Christianity throughout his diocese. St. Martin of Tours is the patron saint of cavalry, soldiers, horses and riders, and those in need. He feast day is Nov 11th.

Designed by 21 year old Maya Lin, many were skeptical when it was first unveiled: but it has become hallowed ground, a place in the national consciousness which brings tears to the eyes of visitors, regardless of whether they had any personal involvement with it, or the war to whose fighters it is dedicated.

111 I like this painting and the significance of poppies. I look at a lot of the art here and think “oh, that is so nice, but I wouldn’t be able to hang it in my house”. I realize I have become very myopic in what I am choosing and have chosen, making my house very…well…it looks like an ad for Pottery Barn and is just generic. I need to change that up. Perhaps it was just a symptom of the chaos of my life for a bit and a need for order gone too far. Thanks for listening in my therapy session today. 😀

It is a solid mile of pictures of Marines killed in combat spaced 6 feet apart, with their names, ranks, and ages at the time of their death.

Obviously, it is a very solemn mile, no one says anything in that section.

I passed a runner, she was on her knees in front of one of the signs, sobbing as she tried to take a picture of it.

But that is the way it is--hold tight to memories of the good times, try not to be discouraged in the bad times, and know this moment too shall pass.

176 The Wall.
When you go to Washington, no need to say anything else. Technically it is the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial, and it is unlike any other war memorial I have ever seen in any country. Designed by 21 year old Maya Lin, many were skeptical when it was first unveiled: but it has become hallowed ground, a place in the national consciousness which brings tears to the eyes of visitors, regardless of whether they had any personal involvement with it, or the war to whose fighters it is dedicated.
------
Thank you, SMH. It really is quite moving.

Wifey was a fan of the TV series China Beach, which I'd never seen -- so we watched it a couple years ago. I really liked it, and the series finale "Hello Goodbye" was a beautifully done future reunion that ended at the Vietnam Memorial ... while the great old Eagles song that I hadn't heard in decades -- "Try To Love Again" -- played in the background.

Brought more than a tear to my eye, it did ...

I had the same thought, but no, I don't really think so. I think he's off his game, and feels threatened. In the Youngkin case, this might be what set him off.

The post by Trump comes a day after Youngkin’s Lt. Gov. Winsome Sears (R) said that she “couldn’t” support Trump if he made a third bid for the Oval Office in 2024.

“I could not support him. I just couldn’t,” said Sears, adding that voters are saying “enough is enough” in relation to Trump through their midterm votes.

“A true leader understands when they have become a liability,” said the lieutenant governor. “A true leader understands that it’s time to step off the stage, and the voters have given us that very clear message.”

And they dried up completely the day after the draft was abolished. Which probably pissed off the Soviets, since they spent so much time and money to build up the antiwar movement only to find that it was really an antidraft movement, which wasn't nearly as useful for their propaganda.

The protests screamed on through '68, '69, '70, and '71, I think. The presidential election of '68 was the first I ever paid attention to. Nixon was saying he'd abolish the draft or end the war, or both, while Humphrey was apparently going on with both. And at 15, I didn't want to get drafted a couple of years hence.

The anti-draft movement weakened a bit when Nixon changed the selection method to a birth-date lottery.

The Wall.

The poem was written by a Canadian. In Canada, it's Remembrance Day, which is much like the US Memorial Day. WWI was much more important to Canada than it was to the US, hence honoring fallen soldiers occurs on the date that WWI ended. Memorial Day is more tied into the Civil War.

On the contrary, that Trump's "lack of decorum" remains unchanged and that his political adversaries are unable to compete similarly, instead resorting to conventional political tactics, means they will most likely meet the same fate as his 2016 primary opponents. Trump seemingly still has a clear lane with the group that swept him to victory then.

It has been some version of 9 years since the 80s. You'd think by now they'd be embarrassed to do this again. You'd be wrong.

257 @179 "I had the same thought, but no, I don't really think so. I think he's off his game, and feels threatened. In the Youngkin case, this might be what set him off."

1) I suppose you could say he always "feels threatened", because he's always actually being threatened, but since he always gets the better of his adversaries it's safe to assume he's really not that worried.

2) If you think he's "off his game", that just means he's several moves ahead of you. You'd think people would figure this out by now.

3) There are likely reasons why Trump is intentionally trying to make it look like he's distancing himself from certain people, when it's really just an act.

Make the mistake of thinking that Trump is doing something out of pettiness or narcissism, or whatever, at your own peril. The guy's a genius and a deal-maker; just watch, use your head, and see if you can maybe learn something.

272 Taker Ghar, AFG 4th, March 2002

"...Sergeant Chapman and the team voluntarily reinserted onto the snow-capped mountain, into the heart of a known enemy stronghold to rescue one of their own. Without regard for his own safety, Sergeant Chapman immediately engaged, moving in the direction of the closest enemy position despite coming under heavy fire from multiple directions. He fearlessly charged an enemy bunker, up a steep incline in thigh-deep snow and into hostile fire, directly engaging the enemy. Upon reaching the bunker, Sergeant Chapman assaulted and cleared the position, killing all enemy occupants. With complete disregard for his own life, Sergeant Chapman deliberately moved from cover only 12 meters from the enemy, and exposed himself once again to attack a second bunker, from which an emplaced machine gun was firing on his team. During this assault from an exposed position directly in the line of intense fire, Sergeant Chapman was struck and injured by enemy fire. Despite severe, mortal wounds, he continued to fight relentlessly, sustaining a violent engagement with multiple enemy personnel before making the ultimate sacrifice. "

The Vietnam Veterans' Memorial was designed to look like an unhealed scar in the earth. The black granite is to mimic tombstones and the funerary black. It is also highly reflective so the viewer can see himself as he focuses on the names on the Wall, so the names take on a ghostly form behind them. The Wall is higher in the middle and tapers to points at the ends. This creates a forced perspective that makes the Wall appear longer than it really was, possible symbolic of how the war went on and on. As you approach the memorial you start at ground level, but as you follow the Wall you descend below the surface, as though you are walking down into a grave. The names begin in the center and go to one end, then pick back up at the opposite end and finish in the center again. The names, therefore, are listed in a circle. A circle has no end, the names seem to go on forever. In my opinion, The Wall is probably one of the greatest war memorials ever designed.

275 Over the Brazier by Robert Graves (best known for "I, Claudius")

What life to lead and where to go
After the War, after the War?
We’d often talked this way before.
But I still see the brazier glow
That April night, still feel the smoke
And stifling pungency of burning coke.

I’d thought: ‘A cottage in the hills,
North Wales, a cottage full of books,
Pictures and brass and cosy nooks
And comfortable broad window-sills,
Flowers in the garden, walls all white.
I’d live there peacefully and dream and write.’

277 Poppies. The American Legion was the main seller of poppies. Some years ago, in Cleveland, a couple punk hoods pulled an auto burglary, making off with a case of poppies. Being crafty businessmen, they decided to sell them, in front of the Terminal Tower. Somehow they were caught and managed to get a judge who was a former big shot in the Legion Department of Ohio. He was not amused.

A warm green jewel in the South Sea.
There’s merit in a lumber shack,

So then we built and stocked for Willie

Philosophical leader? That's not really where his value add is, anymore than the kingmaker thing some of y'all were pushing.

He's a good individual politician, he's a good administrator, and we're starting to see signs he understands being a party boss of a political machine (which has been a serious weakpoint for Rs and strongpoint for Ds for decades). But philosophy and articulating a platform aren't where he's best.

The Rs have always suffered from internal discord. If he can set up a national-level party machine and monarchial party boss seat, that goes a long way to getting people pushing in the same direction with more consistency.

It's not a philosophy. The new Trump voters care about one thing, most of the people here think MAGA is rewarmed Conservatism.

Trump the politician simply delivers what his constituents wants. He doesn't backstab them. He's not pushing an ideology he constructed.

That doesn't inherently make the policies he pursues a coherent philosophy representing a unified group of people. He has unified disparate interests by addressing their needs individually. This is how Democrats do politics.

I saw few stands with poppies for a small donation this year. It was a huge thing in my area of SE PA before covid with several AMVET and VFW Posts competing for booth or table space outside of markets, etc., especially during warm months.

The Posts memberships are falling quickly, with the very last of the WW2 & Korean War veterans passing as are a great deal of the Vietnam era veterans. The younger veterans haven't gravitated to the Posts. They're not within their comfort level and needs which are sustantially different from their seniors. Supporting Post membership has also falling greatly. (Peaceful protests of 2020 didn't help.)

The poppies are still available on occasion, i.e. Memorial Day, etc. Yes, there are still many people who wear them for special occasions, funerals, etc.

393 The flag of freedom flies over Kherson: Ukrainian troops are treated to a hero's welcome as they arrive in city centre after final Russian troops fled under barrage of rocket fire

- Ukraine is now in full control of the city of Kherson after Russian troops fled, military intelligence has said
- Troops were given hero's welcome in main square by locals who hugged, kissed, and chanted victory slogans
- Came after Kyiv's men pounded river crossings out of the city overnight with artillery amid rumours that thousands of Russian troops could be trapped - but it quickly became apparently most had already gone
- Fears that Moscow could be laying a trap for Ukraine's men also appeared to be unfounded - perhaps part of a disinformation campaign to slow the advance and allow more time to withdraw

395 Doesn't anybody else find it strange, how Trump talks about the Biden administration? He flat-out says that it cannot be allowed a full 4 years.

He speaks as if somebody or something could somehow END the Biden administration early.

How can a former POTUS talk like that? Think about it. He'd have to have something rather unusual and unprecedented in mind, to talk like that. Perhaps something that requires publicly distancing himself from his allies?

I dunno what it could be, but unexplainable things keep happening, and he's also said something about us being made "very happy" quite soon. Doesn't quite seem like a 2024 bid fits the bill. He's also said outright "a storm is coming", and that "you'll see" what he means.

Maybe something is afoot. We'll just have to be patient, and enjoy the show.

Regardless what may happen with the current ballot counting his actions remind the docile Republicans that they really ought to be fighting instead of navel gazing. His style may leave a lot to be desired, or not, but he's not going away anytime soon. He wants to run again and swinging his dick around a crowded room is his way of saying he's top dog.

443 This is the 2nd section of a posting on The Morning Report thread. Yes, often late, usually apologizing. Yr indulgence is greatly appreciated.

The last 15 or so years, articles have periodically appeared questioning if all eligible voters who vote should be involved 'picking the leaders' of this nation. After all, participation is one thing but, perhaps, the all in voting would be better utilized for local elections. Interesting, I used to think.

Now the local elections are becoming open to all residents in many towns and counties, not just legal citizens. Get a drivers license or similar documentation, register & vote in some local elections around the nation. And, of course, there's also the move to more same day registration and voting and, sooner than later, the progressives will also have voting age pushed lower if needed to maintain their power.

So the point is, you're MAGA - damned if you do, damned if you don't. PREPARE NOW in broad terms for the next presidential election, as the democrats &/or progressives ARE ALREADY DOING, but always within the law.

One more good try, at least for us & ours, in our lifetimes.

OK, was going to ask you a question but then kind of flummoxed myself. Love Desantis' record. Thinking of a deal breaker that would cause me to stay at home.

Let's say Desantis is endorsed by people like Ryan and the Bushes but doesn't actively campaign with them or talk up their association. Would those endorsements be enough to put you off voting for Desantis if he was the nominee?

My deal breaker is him appearing on stage with a Ryan or a Bush.

458 "You can go hear what the Establishment is saying yourself. It's not secret they're trying to set up DeSantis to make a run at Trump. Whether DeSantis himself wants that is up in the air, but he hasn't exactly rejected it."

Irrespective of the "establishment" there is a growing party contingent who sees Trump as a very flawed candidate and feels the party is better served by someone else. Trump is proving that true every day. Materially he did a good job in the past. But He's not exactly showing great leadership. He's showing his ass.

I believe Ace made a pretty good case yesterday that DeSantis isn't exactly the "establishment" and that's a pretty flawed argument. Not that I trust DeSantis or anyone else, and I also think his choice of a guy like Cox is suspect. But his actions are not those of past establishment candidates. Nor do his impulses seem to be. He certainly needs a bit more national scrutiny, and I think the "Walker Maximum" applies here.

It's the radical notion that the purpose of government is to pursue the interests of the people of the nation.

Which is similar to, but a step down from protecting the God-given Rights of the people of the nation, which is the only legitimate reason the USA exists as an organization at all. Which is right there in the Declaration of Independence for anyone who can be bothered to read.

That's where we are.

The painting portrays all of the young lasses who sorely missed not having a husband, either because they were lost in the war, or their chance of getting a husband were lost at Ypres or the Somme.

I've mentioned it here before, I think, but my Scottish grandmother, born 1892, hated the Germans with a passion. I'm sure the fact that so many of her potential mates were killed in the war had something to do with it. Anyway, she emigrated to the US and met my GFather, who had a bad eye, so couldn't join the military.

Did I mention that my mother was full blood German? Awkward.

469 Two days after Republicans dramatically underperformed in the midterms, but even as control of Congress remains too close to call, Sen. Josh Hawley has completed his autopsy and offered it to his party’s leaders for consideration. The topline: The failure is all their fault.

The Missouri populist believes the Republican Party offered voters plenty in the way of generalized gripes about Democrats and President Biden – but no actionable alternative. Hawley blames that on what he calls “Washington Republicanism,” specifically Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. He also thinks it was a bad idea to talk about making changes to Social Security and Medicare.

470 446 That's a string of buzz-words, not a philosophy. As for Trump as philosopher, what's his manifesto? Best you can point to is Art of the Deal, which is pragmatism, not ideology.

Posted by: Red Turban Someguy - The Republic is already dead! at November 11, 2022 10:44 AM (eYoxG)

Buzz words? Bullshit. Market-based populism is pretty fucking clear. Focus the economy on the largest segment of it by population, using free-market concepts.

If you are defining "philosophy" by the presence of a manifesto then you are doing it wrong.
Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at November 11, 2022 10:48 AM (XIJ/X)

Market-based populism doesn't mean anything in economics. It's not a set of principles by which to derive policy, nor does it clearly point in a given direction. It can mean subsidies, it can mean no subsidies. Regulation, deregulation? What's the guiding principle? If the guiding principle is "interests of groups I need to win", that's political pragmatism, not an economic philosophy like capitalism, mercantilism, or socialism.

479 Just as Israel did over and over again in the Old Testament, so we have done in not teaching our children to value our freedom and defend it fiercely. We have failed to tell them of it "when you are sitting in your house, and when you are walking by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise." We merely passed it on as a legacy to privileged children, expecting it to continue out of sheer inertia.
But we do not live in a frictionless world. Inertia is brought to a stop by outside forces. Christianity and Americanism undefended cede ground to Progressivism, one institution at a time, one principle, one virtue at a time.

And, suddenly, one day there isn't a large enough remnant to rise up and lead the people once again to freedom. And the light goes out. And all that remains are small candles burning brightly against the darkness, in defiance of those who would extinguish them. All that remains of hope is a small ember.

But, embers remain. And they can still ignite a fire, if husbanded and rightly used.

"The Plan" is just to educate We the People regarding the proper relationship between the citizen and the US government, and to get more involved with it. Fundamentally, the American form of government is about trusting We the People, so I suppose to say "trust the plan" is really to say to trust that the Founding Fathers knew what they were doing, and go and actually implement what they envisioned.

Trump isn't a philosopher and I'm fine with that.

He's a businessman who believes in the free market, which means -

he understands what "service" means.

You always have a customer whom you must serve. This is the essence of politics (and public service).
The successful businessman is a successful servant.

People tend to misunderstand this about Trump, by thinking it's nothing but a puffed up ego motivating him.

This Philosophy, if you wish, is the driving philosophy of successful politics. The Democrats understand this. It's why they do every single thing their lunatic voters bring up, regardless of how damaging to the nation.

The GOPe Republicans on the other hand reject the philosophy of service, and instead have bought into the philosophy of Our Betters that we must be controlled and our wishes and wants denied. This is why "we" fail. We're treated exactly as the Saudi Royals treat their population.

Really, folks. Get your heads on straight. Trump may fail in his run, but make sure his successor understands service.

528 You always have a customer whom you must serve.

Posted by: naturalfake at November 11, 2022 11:00 AM (KLPy

It's political pragmatism. Which isn't something that needs a philosopher to push. It is effective politicking and worth emulating when sensible, but the "make Trump our philosophical representative/leader" thing makes no sense.

529 If you are defining "philosophy" by the presence of a manifesto then you are doing it wrong.
Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at November 11, 2022 10:48 AM (XIJ/X)

By definition a philosophy requires defining what it is. That might not mean a "manifesto" in your eyes, but it requires _something_ by which people can set expectations or derive meaningful action.

Populism is a philosophy. One which simply says "what the mass of people want." There; defined it. I find it severely lacking and ultimately rule by mob. In an economic sense it's "Rule by Marketing." And wow, but that seems a really awful way to do things.

Philosophy/ideology is about what we're actually going to do when in power though. Not how we're going to convince people to put us in power.

548 The overarching idea is that the American people should be the focus of American government.

Maybe to clarify: As opposed to Globalism, which is all about casting aside the ideas America was founded on in order to fit in to the progressive world order.

So, for example, we should not be trading with China. We would on balance be better of if the products we get from them were made here, because our fellow Americans would be the ones doing the job, and getting paid for it. Even if the products themselves are more expensive, that situation is cheaper in the long run, because the folks who are working don't have a financial incentive to go to the Democrats' government for handouts (and if we could ever return to real elections, they would have less incentive to support Democrats at all).

I'm curious if you see how very cult of personality that is. And that's one of my primary problems with Trump - it so easily becomes about HIM instead of about the principles required to get us back to a truly free Republic.

(My other is that so many see him as a conservative when he's anything but a Constitutionalist or what so many would define as a conservative. Sorry, but he isn't. He looks similar because of the contrast to the fundamentalist Progressives currently running our country. But that's it.)

This is the real difference between 1968 (or similar date) and now. With an universally recognized existential threat out there, both Democrats and Republicans - whether Progressive or Bircher - could agree that keeping America at the top of its game was paramount, and they would simply argue about *how* to do so.

With that threat gone (supposedly), the Progressives felt they could once again run for the laurels with their goal of a globalist humanist utopia. And they did. And now we find ourselves in a fight for the very existence of our country.

In a conference room surrounded by lawyers, Staples claims that he was sexually assaulted by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who forced him to have oral sex following a CPAC conference while interning for his office.

Diane immediately dismisses the accusation as politically motivated "bulls---" despite Staples claiming to have DNA proof. The lawyers spend the episode gathering evidence to expose Staples for lying.
