Election News Round Up 1

GOP jumps out to biggest lead in RCP average in 8 months, just in time for election.

rcpaverageoctober18.jpg

It's only a 2.2 point lead, but this is from pollsters who consistently undersample Republicans, and a national poll of congressional voter intent is biased in favor of Democrats, anyway: Democrats are crammed into safe, ultramarine Democrat districts, and less represented in the competitive swing districts actually in play.

So what does this mean? It portends a significant wave in House races, to be sure. Thanks to the structure of generic ballot polling, Democrats generally need to get to D+4 or D+5 to hold serve in an election. An R+2.2 -- if that's where it stays -- suggests a massive set of pickups, at least in a relative sense. Don't forget that Republicans already have 212 seats in the House, so a 30-seat pickup would give them a blowout majority and put them close to 2010 territory. If this lead widens any further, it may well also point to a wave that could lift marginal GOP candidates for Senate into office as well. That is what happened in 2014, for instance, an outcome that pollsters missed entirely.

Is Kathy Hochul in trouble? Could might be!

newyorkgovernorraceoctober18.jpg

Hochul's down to a 6.2 point average lead, which should be very worrying for her given the Democrat skew in polls and Republican enthusiasm. That average is also blown the F*** out by a completely out-of-line report that just came in from the NYT/Siena poll, claiming an 11 point lead for Hochul.

Meanwhile, Quinippiac just put the race at 4.

And Trafalgar, the much-maligned "Republican-skewing" pollster that always seems to call these races correctly, puts it at a two point race, within the margin of error.

Crime is a top issue in the campaign.

"Whether I'm in a blue county or a red county or talking to Republicans, Democrats or independents, I hear about people who care about crime and public safety," Zeldin said in an interview. "They want to take back our streets."

Crime ranks among voters' top concerns nationwide heading into Election Day, and the issue is pronounced in the Empire State -- particularly in New York City, where daily headlines about violence have even Democrats at odds over how to best address it.

Polls in New York have shown crime as a major consideration in the governor's race, and ads by underdog Zeldin and the super PACs supporting his candidacy have derided Hochul for not doing more to address crime.

"It's a flood, and Kathy Hochul isn't up to the job of fighting crime," an ominous voice in an ad from the Safe Together NY committee, a PAC backing him, says.

Below, a Zeldin ad on crime. Note that it was impossible to find this ad through Google, YouTube, and Twitter searches -- they are deliberately hiding it. Searching "Lee Zeldin campaign ad" or "Lee Zeldin campaign ad crime" fails to turn the ad up.

To find it, I had to go to Lee Zeldin's twitter account, and then scroll down post by post.

Nurse Kathy should be worried. A single new video of a nasty street crime in New York state that is attributable to Hochul's support of cashless bail will probably tip this election to Zeldin.

I mean, another outrageous crime attributable to Hochul, besides this one that just happened. Disgusting.

New York's bail "reforms," which Hochul refuses to change, forbids judges from considering the danger posed by the criminal when granting or refusing bail.

So they let this guy out, who had repeatedly attacked his wife, and who was so predictably going to murder his wife that she was wearing a bullletproof vest when he murdered her.

A New York woman was allegedly shot dead by her estranged husband who was arrested on the previous day on the charges of domestic violence, police say. Keaira Hudson Bennefield, 40, who was also a mother of three, was fatally shot on Wednesday, October 5, as she sat inside her car outside her mother's home. The shooting was witnessed by two of her children who were in the back seat of the car. Police have issued an arrest warrant for Keaira's estranged husband, Adam Bennefield, in connection to the shooting.

Adam allegedly assaulted Keaira for which he was arrested but he was released from jail short after on the same day. According to People, on September 28, officers from the Cheektowaga Police Department responded to a domestic violence call at a home. Bennefield already fled the scene by the time police arrived. Keaira was advised by the officers to contact them if he returned.

Call us if he beats you again, so we can arrest him and keep him in custody for 2-3 hours before a judge sets him free.

Unless he just murders you this time.

Which he will.

Keaira posted a video of the assault on her Facebook page on the next day. Police officers arrested Bennefield and charged him with one count of third-degree assault, two counts of fourth-degree criminal mischief, one count of second-degree menacing, one count of second-degree unlawful imprisonment and one count of second-degree harassment after they saw the video on October 2. However, he was released on his own recognizance just hours after his arrest.

Hochul says your kids should wear masks at school, though.

Amazingly, "Danang Dick" Blumenthal of Connecticut, one of the most rotten of the nasty liberal Senators in a Senate full of the breed, might be in trouble as well.

Hard to believe, and this is just a single poll. Still. Worth at least noting.

Republican Senatorial candidate Leora Levy is closing the gap on Democratic Connecticut Sen. Richard Blumenthal just weeks before the midterms, according to a new Connecticut Examiner/Fabrizio and Lee & Associates poll.

Levy is just five points behind incumbent Sen. Blumenthal, with results showing 44% to 49% with a 2.8% margin of error, the poll reported. Serving as the Republican National Committeewoman for the State of Connecticut since 2016, Levy intends to replace career politician Blumenthal's "far-left policies" that undermine "freedom and security," her website says.

Maybe DeSantis, Abbot, and Ducey need to send some illegal aliens to Yale.

Oh, I'm sure this is just a natural change in the electorate and not a handful of pollsters (not all, just some) trying to get things close to right in their final polls.

I expect low turnout b/c only congressional seats are up...and that's where you're ripe for pick ups when only one side is motivated (Youngkin is currently popular, so there's nothing to GOTV for the dems and people are STILL pissed about the school trans path on top of inflation, gas prices, and low fed pay raises that don't come close to inflation...so much so on the trans stuff, that Fairfax school board could only issue a resolution for Trans month for October after Youngkin's brilliant move - they couldn't actually sue him like Alexandria is)...

I'm all-in on Levy, but I'm a little concerned. I see her signs all over the place, but I haven't seen her much locally lately. I've seen Blumenthal at three separate events in the last month. Levy went to MAL this weekend for a Trump-hosted fundraiser. She doesn't need the money - she needs people knocking on doors.

Levy needs to win, because if Blumenthal does he'll be grooming his son to take his place. Murphy is hard enough to beat as it is. A more energetic Dem in Blumenthal's seat in 2028 will doom CT.

That might be the key to the Boston 80% mortality strain that they were working on. It will react with the vaccination to kill people.

It's pretty brilliant, really, if your goal is a massive reduction in population.

I have a theory that McConnell is planning to retire after the midterms. Everything now is to try and secure a GOP majority in the Senate, while not handing control to the MAGA faction. I think that this is also why Romney won't endorse Lee: if McMullin wins then Romney becomes the senior Senator from Utah, and the narrative will be that without Romney's endorsement Lee lost, so Romney has power. That sets him up to be McConnell's heir as the "respectable" Republican leader.

179 I have a theory that McConnell is planning to retire after the midterms.

The state budget is only green due to the funds Congress supplied to bail them out. The tax base is shrinking and in a few short years NY will be in real serious fiscal trouble if this continues. It simply would be a temporary reprieve from insanity. His election will be a holding action, at best.

I know reaching an agreement for debates can be tough, but there needs to be some minimum so voters can see, one on one, what they're voting for.

btw, I'm now sure that Louie Gohmert got to where he couldn't stand the DC bullshit anymore, and got out. He was a guest of honor at a local parade last weekend, and he was telling an interviewer that the entire time he was in DC he never bought a house or rented an apartment; he just slept on a pull out sofa bed in his senate office.

Global Positioning System (GPS) instrumentation on Mauna Loa continue to measure inflation at rates elevated since mid-September, indicating that magma is building inside the volcano.

But he's not some hardened Gen Patton of the right. Let's just try and be realistic about NY and the Northeast in general

Having spent all of my 29 years in the northeast including roots in NY I think I'm pretty realistic about what type of R can actually get elected here. I just don't agree that Zeldin is as weak as you do. Zeldin was a very vocal Trump supporter in Congress and even went so far as to vote to not certify certain state electors. He's a full blown election denier!

For the last decade or so NY has basically been a 1 party state and taking on a turnaround is going to be a herculean task. He's not going to be DeSantis but then NY is not FL. 418 I was talking with a group of my wife's lady cousins over the weekend at a wedding, and we're all from Michigan. They were asking what my reaction was to Gibbs having never disowned his college paper that the women's suffrage was a mistake.

I wasn't going to come right out and agree with him (partially because I don't totally). But I said "the chances that he would ever get to act on that is very slim".

The interesting thing is that the cousins agreed to that pragmatic point. It is better to vote for a Republican that has some "whacky (not so whacky) ideas" that they are very unlikely to be able to do anything about, for reorienting the country toward a more traditional sanity.

But it kind of illustrates the way that the media has addicted people to a sort of orthodox purity of views, rather than people easily seeing the tradeoff nature of representational politics.

Soooo, huh? What's the plan, here? I can think of several things that might work to pursue this madness:
1. Government-owned whorehouses operated as a public service
2. Legalize rape
3. Mandate sexual activity between unappealing people (e.g., you *must* sleep with a trans person, etc.).
4. Regulate sex entirely, with the government playing matchmaker, with a dose of compulsion. Institutionalize and depersonalize the rape.

What drugs is this chick on? Has she considered in the slightest that this doesn't mean "I get to be a slut without shame or judgment if I do this?" Also, has she ever said the word "incel" or made fun of them? Are they included in her scheme of mandatory sex?

That was a Soap storyline: Burt is running for sheriff. On election day he's so nervous he accidentally votes for his opponent. When they're watching the results come in on tv later, he's losing by one vote.

Posted by: J. Frank Parnell at October 18, 2022 04:07 PM

The wife and I were not going to vote in the last election that had some B$ stuff in it and a school bond proposal that would raise taxes. We weren't going to vote because we are over 65 and our school property taxes can't be raised but we went ahead and voted. The bond measure was defeated by one vote.

I like to think that one of us was that one vote.

456 MN has no party registration. Everyone gets the same ballot with all the parties on it. You can only vote one party line, or the ballot is thrown out. I usually vote Dem, and against the Party Approved Candidate.

Except in 2020, they had a Presidential Primary, where you had to request a party ballot, and they actually were allowed to record your choice. I voted Bernie!

458 >>You're going to be disappointed. Your expectations for Zeldin do not seem to align with his politics. He's fine, but he's just not changing NY or turning it red if he gets elected. He'll struggle to get anyone to go along with him and concede a lot of conservative issues and causes in order to "get along" - that is his history.

Again, I don't expect him to turn NY red. That is an idiotic expectation.

I expect him to get rid of some of Hochul's biggest extremes like no bail which is an absolute layup, get rid of some of the DA and make some improvement around the edges where it is possible.

On the other hand I think you are way too pessimistic about how thrilled everyone is with the direction of NY and many are not interested in changing course. That is just not supported by what's happening in the world.

Again, I don't expect Zeldin to be a conservative rock star in NY. DeSantis wouldn't be a conservative rock star in NY. He probably wouldn't even get elected. But I don't think Zeldin is as lame as you do. We'll see.

We pretty much have what she wants right now. Only street streetwalkers even get bothered.

The secret, though is that men are wired to favor women with youth and lower 'body counts' and there's nothing you can do about that. This generation of modern 'party' women will be alone and bitter and are not well prepared for any of that.

If he just enforces the law and locks up criminals he might cause a surge in interest in the GOP there. It happened in the 80s and 90s in NYC for similar reasons.

464 Not only do we get the “Sanity Bump” because every pollster relies on the correctness of their polls to stay in business, but we also now have the “RCP Bump”. Because RCP is gonna grade the pollsters from now on and presumably use that to determine how much weight to give to their results in RCP’s averages.
