Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition![]() Virgin Atlantic announced on Oct. 5 that it’s permanently pulling out of Hong Kong, dropping flights to the Asian hub and shuttering its offices after 30 years. The UK company cited a string of factors as reasons behind the decision, including issues arising from Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine. “After careful consideration, we’ve taken the difficult decision to suspend our London Heathrow to Hong Kong services and close our Hong Kong office, after almost 30 years of proudly serving this Asian hub city,” an airline spokesperson said in a statement. The airline stated that “ongoing Russian airspace closure,” which would have resulted in Heathrow to Hong Kong flight times being extended by between one and two hours, had also played a part in its decision. If there was money to be made on the Hong Kong route they would have stayed, especially since a fair amount of that travel is the hugely profitable business seat, which can be several orders of magnitude more expensive than an economy ticket. That they are leaving a prestigious route is a clear signal that the expectation of future profit is unclear. And that signals their opinion of the business climate in Hong Kong. They can blame Covid and Putin's Ukraine adventure all they want, but the reality is stark. What is fascinating about the gradual destruction of Hong Kong as a world business center at the hands of the communist dictators in Peking is that they are willing to forego tens of billions in capital inflows as long as they get their political way, which is to turn Hong Kong into just another Chinese business center. And that means cracking down hard on the freedoms that Hong Kong has enjoyed ever since Great Britain took it during the first opium war. A more enlightened communist government would have allowed Hong Kong its freedoms and reaped the huge profits (with its attendant graft) available. But the Chinese communist mindset is consumed by image, and they simply cannot abide freedom and individualism anywhere in their world. That of course is their loss, but it is the West's loss too. Hong Kong was a beacon of relative freedom in an ocean of totalitarian excess, and it has been destroyed. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

++++ Yup. Even that is optional. Hong Kongers are Chinese, and they *will* be brought to heel. There must be one China, one Chinese way, one Chinese leader. "One nation, two systems" lasted longer than I expected, but still far less time than they asserted when Hong Kong reverted to CCP authority. If you have a Chinese population, China will bring you into the fold. It doesn't matter if it's destructive or whatever. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at October 06, 2022 11:04 AM (t0OGg) 12

Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko on Thursday banned price increases with immediate effect to curb galloping inflation in the former Soviet country.
Lukashenko, who has ruled Belarus with an iron fist since 1994, is known for folksy eccentricities and radical suggestions, such as drinking a shot of vodka daily to ward off the coronavirus. "From Oct. 6, all price increases are forbidden. Forbidden! From today. Not from tomorrow, from today. So that prices aren't driven up in the next 24 hours," Lukashenko told a meeting with officials. He said consumer prices were "outrageous" and had increased by 18% year-on-year. Of course, this is what Gavin Newsom wants to do with oil prices in California. I'm sure he's taking notes. Welp, I laughed (bitterly) more at the squeaky clean, hopeful, Chinese taking over Hong Kong good feeling and general very obvious in hindsight propaganda nonsense than I did the actual hijinks on the screen. BONUS! The big villain was a white Englishman who was looting all of China's cultural heritage with his run from his gov't office crime syndicate. It’s like uhm ok dude, you won’t ever fly American again but United will be absolutely 100% perfect for you right? Good luck with all that. I quickly learned shit happens, flights get delayed and cancelled and there is nothing anyone can do about it least of all the gate agent that you are screaming at. Best way to approach it is to go Zen and roll with it.

Hong Kong is a great loss for tourism. And expat business life. Good friends lived there for years, visited them a few times, it was fantastic. As CBD notes, a fitting grim monument to the deadening hand of totalitarianism.

There was vast "capital" expansion in Hong Kong, but imo, largely because they were a gateway to the slavery and free pollution and other "cost savings" that the Wall Street corporate raiders loved.
The magic of banks printing money and getting rich turned USA into a financial giant, even as they sold out their working class in favor of slaves (and the pollution and empowerment of China that went with it). Bretton Woods set us on that course (I guess), and we kept a strong military which protected the USD, but government got bought as banks took control of finance. Middle America poured 10% of every paycheck into the Wall Street (Ponzi?) game starting around 1982, globalists took control of the cash stream, and here we are, zero bound on interest rate magic, deep in debt but the oligarchs are still sucking the last dollar out of USA. Losing Hong Kong was part of the end game process? Build Back Brandon. Posted by: illiniwek at October 06, 2022 11:19 AM (Cus5s) 95

Lukashenko's a wild one. In the early post-Soviet days he'd do things like cut off water and power to the US embassy in Minsk. I don't even recall the "issues" involved. I just saw the cable traffic, all my biz was elsewhere in the former Onion.
Gary Saul Morson, the great professor of Russian literature at Northwestern, wrote a parody of Russian language and literature called "And Quiet Flows The Vodka" under a pseudonym. It included a purported response from the Belarussian Foreign Ministry stating that since it was Belarus, the surprising thing was not that the US embassy sometimes lost water and power, but that the US embassy ever had water and power at all. Reading Miranda Devine reporting on Tony Bobulinski, I am reminded all the corruption allegations are for Biden family behavior that occurred beginning long ago and extending up to his taking office. No allegations of anything as president have been made, that I've seen.
Since the Residency began, the story has shifted to the censoring of Biden news and the cover-up. It's a story now about the FBI and Big Tech colluding to keep facts from Americans. On a dive trip long ago to the southwest Pacific, there were two very young Cathay Pacific pilots in the group on the tiny island. They had done a direct-from-high-school training thing with British Airways. One was so young that on HK-LA trips, he couldn't get a drink in LA. That whole thing was a bit surprising.

Spirit actually has a market niche: Low cost.
You get what you pay for. And you're not paying a lot, so you're not getting a lot. Less room, less luggage weight, less workers to accommodate you, less timeliness of takeoffs and landings. It's the Motel 6 of airlines. Once you know what to expect and know their system it is not so bad. The biggest problem is with the other passengers who will, do not and can not adjust their expectations and start pulling out weaves when they perceive they've been "dissed" by Spirit's standard level of service. Higher prices do two things: it increases the quality of service and, more importantly, it increases the quality of passengers by filtering out a demographic that is more self centered and entitled. In his campaign for a crucial U.S. Senate seat, Democrat John Fetterman takes credit for reinventing Pennsylvania’s lieutenant governor’s office, transforming it from a political pit stop into a “bully pulpit” from which he’s advanced progressive causes.
Records from Fetterman’s four years in office, however, offer a different portrait of his time in the $179,000-a-year elected job. They show Fetterman typically kept a light work schedule and was often absent from state business, including presiding over the state Senate, which is one of his chief duties, according to an Associated Press review of his daily calendars and attendance records. I wonder how many China-connected - including Hong Kong - enterprises are waiting for the upcoming CCP congress to complete before making major moves. The odds are good that Xi is going to be reinstalled and if he is, it will be more of the same. He is down with total Party control and if that means that enterprises get fucked and the economy fails, then so be it. They won't destroy the economy on purpose, but reduced economic power will be an acceptable cost to increased Party control. Xi is far more Mao than Deng.
If Xi loses power to a more economically-minded or openness-minded person for the Party chairmanship, it might encourage more wait-and-see from foreign business and government interests. Might, not a guarantee. But I suspect a bunch of power players are waiting to see what will happen. If Xi is reinstalled, Virgin Atlantic might just be looked at as an early mover. Eh. You're making it sound like they're insisting all gardens be registered. From the website, it looks more like you can get a little bit of promotion of your community garden project if you register. You get a sign, they add you to their map, you can brag about how much food you donate, and you can use federal lands for your garden project if it's for education / donation. It's all voluntary.
