A semi-auto 12 guage bullpup is far more fun than I would have imagined. Had a good time yesterday. Took a friend out to lunch for his birthday, then went back to his farm and shot a bunch of guns.

Bear Creek Arsenal BC 15 for 350 is a hell of a nice shooter for the money. No mags or sights with it, but a good red dot can be had for under 70 bucks, and mags are cheap. Ammo will set you back, but deals can occasionally be found.

Found the Tokarev shotty at Rural King on sale a while back. Cycled birdshot out of the box with no stovepipes.

What's your favorite shooter?

Best deal?

Sold my late brother's freightliner last weekend. I had to help the guys who came to pick it up by sitting in the cab and horsing the steering wheel around as they pulled it out and got the back end swung around for towing.

A couple of years ago, some idiot managed to get the driver's side window down a couple of inches, (power window), and critters got into the cab. Hanging from the divider between the passenger side cab and the sleeper section was a Bald Faced Hornet's nest, thankfully empty. But as I was managing the steering wheel, the Velcro holding the side window curtain came loose and I could see out of the corner of my left eye, a large Paper Wasp's nest...and it wasn't empty; infact, it was full of those large brown and yellow striped critters with daggers for stingers. Thankfully I was able to sit still enough to not startle them into flying into my face and stinging the hell out of me. My 64 yr old body wouldn't have been able to move fast enough to avoid them and I most likely would have killed myself exiting the cab of the truck.

Posted by: That Guy What Always Says Yeah Buddy TM at August 28, 2022 06:16 AM (R5lpX)

10 The truck had been sitting since around 2008 or so. The batteries were dead. Thankfully all the tires held air. The guy who bought it, got it because it was an '01 Freightliner with the 60 series 575 HP Detroit motor and it was pre DEF.

He towed back to his shop in eastern NC, put good batteries in it and the truck cranked right up. It will still take some serious interior work before it's roadworthy again. When my brother had it on the road, there wasn't many other trucks who could keep up with him when he had it in the wind.

11 Morning, folken,

That Guy, your story about the wasps gives me the creeps. I've never been stung by one of those things, or bees either, and I want to keep it that way.

In totally unrelated news, Eastwood's Unforgiven is on Grit TV tonight!

I got up early to work out, but I just do not feel up to it. My major grocery shopping is done, so I can just relax this morning. The car needs a bath and Stirling's litter box needs a complete clean; aside from that I have no real chores on the calendar.

58 Foolish clergyman of the day story

The town of Ocean Grove, NJ-which is a seaside community which was founded as a Camp Meeting Association of the Methodist Church is erecting a pier in the shape of a cross
into the ocean. Apparently some Presbyterian pastor, Douglas Grote, had this to say about it:

"I fear that my faith's lovely cross may soon become as toxic as Trojan horse, for Ocean Grove, Asbury Park and all of NJ."

Why is that Rev Grote? The CMA is not going to check and see if you are a Christian before you use the pier. Seagulls flying overhead will be offended? Y Shall we remove all the crosses on the top of churches of churches in Ocean Grove because someone may be offended? Is there a cross anywhere inside your church?

122 So I finally got into it with my neighbor who is an opinion columnist with the Boston Globe - Scott Lehigh. I was in a foul mood from dropping a 37" Mickey Thompson tire on my foot when my table I was using to mount it on my 2-piece wheel collapsed. Earlier in the day I just sunk $116 into my diesel tank.
He loves my dog and he's nice guy. We kept it civil but man I just can't get over the sense of entitlement he has about the willingness to impose his value set on the rest of us. We got into the whole climate change debate while standing behind my Hummer.
Of course, I'm not a professional debater like he is. But he kept saying "what about..." For example - "what would you do when the coastal cities start flooding?" to which I replied "Scott, when it happens, it's not like you're going to wake up one day and your living room will be under 6 feet of water that won't be gone in 24 hours. It's going to happen incrementally over time, inch by inch. And you know what I'd do? Move. Just like humans have done for 8000 years."
He's bringing me a book on converting climate skeptics. Like a gaggle of nice ladies passing out bibles.

A guy brought a new 2014 Chevy Volt (MSRP $40). Last month it started to have issues so he brought it to his local dealership. The vehicle had 70K miles on it. Dealership says the Volt needs a new battery pack.

How much would you imagine that'd cost?

-

About $30K (according to this dealership). However the "actual" prices for a battery pack for a 2014 Chevy Volt are all over the board and the cheapest is about $4K. YMMV

BTW... the cost Chevy quoted this idiot for the pack was $26K with the rest installation and the other shit dealers typically add on. And a hefty environmental fee.

Some time back I read some advice to put the name of a trailer's owner on its roof (paint or decal) in conjunction with our scout troop having a great deal of its gear stored there. In theory, that would help track it down in the event that it was stolen. We've not done that thus far.

186 Thanks for the spur to knowledge...

The city of Toronto, Ontario has an average elevation of 251 feet above sea level, which in metric is 76.5 meters above sea level. ... Toronto is a city found in Ontario, Canada. It is located 43.70 latitude and -79.42 longitude and it is situated at elevation 175 meters above sea level. [Apparently the height difference is average versus highest point.]

I guess I'm safe to buy lakefront property here just like Obama, Clinton, Gore et alia in their estates!

197 Continuing the "fun things to shoot" discussion: a friend recently purchased a replica of the Sturmgewehr-44 that shoots .22lr. It's a neat looking rifle, and of course it looks like a beast when you remove it from the case, but then when you start firing it's just "pop, pop, pop." It's 2-3 times the cost of a 10/22 for the same effect, but still a fun little rifle.

And it looks like we will be spending the night somewhere south of DC for the night, with the trailer behind a very expensive truck.
Trying now to figure out a safe place to sleep the night through, and finish up the return trip the next day.

May even try to get south of Richmond before we bed down, for safety of property.

A member of my writing group has invited me to a writers' event at a bar or music place next Sunday. It's in a shabby and dangerous-looking area of town I unfortunately know well.
