The Future Is Dumb: More Than One Third of Gen Z'ers Want To Be "Social Media Influencers" When They End Their School

Can this be true? More than one third want to be social media influencers, but surely they're not so stupid to actually plan on attempting a career as social media influencers, right? Right. Don't be too alarmed. The percentage who actually plan careers as social media influencers is far, far lower than one third plan to become social media influencers as a career. Only 27% plan to be social media influencers, in fact. Just a tiny fraction of Gen Z'ers think they'll be making their primary income from Insta and TikTok. Just a mere more-than-one-quarter.
Perhaps even more shockingly, our study found that Gen Z males (20%) are more likely than females (13%) to believe that being a social media influencer is the only choice of career for them, with almost half of the males surveyed (49%) agree that being a social media influencer is a good career choice. Overall over 1 in 4 Gen Z surveyed plan to become social media influencers, with 16% even claiming that they would pay to become one.They would pay to become famous. Or even, " " " famous ." " " In these trying times, this just isn't said enough: We're doomed.

According to the results of the study, nearly 1 in 4 Gen Z believe there should be social media influencer training in school, with 6% of Gen Z actively choosing not to go to college to become an influencer.I'm not going to object to them seeing college as a poor deal, but I notice "work for a living" doesn't place on this list.
Results found that over 20% of Gen Z believe that the older generation doesn’t understand social media influencing, with just 8% of respondents claiming that their parents like them using social media. Nearly 1 in 4 Gen Z claimed that their parents follow them on social media, with almost 50% agreeing that their parents would prefer for them to go to college than become an influencer. The study also found that 27% of Gen Z believe that their parents would be unsupportive of them becoming social media influencers, preferring for them to go to college (50.30%).
So Gen Z is around 72 million people, and... 27% of them, or about nineteen million of them, are going to be earning their income primarily through recommending make-up, bathing suits, deadlift variations, new memecoins and Marvel movies? Okay! Now get out there and really Be Somebody, Idiots!

Tweens who spend more time on screens have a higher likelihood of developing disruptive behavior disorders, with social media having an especially strong influence, a new UC San Francisco-led study published today in the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry found.
Social media use was most likely to be linked to conduct disorder, while other forms of screen use--such as watching videos and television, playing video games, and texting--were more likely to be associated with oppositional defiant disorder (ODD). Conduct disorder is characterized by violating others' basic rights or societal rules with actions such as bullying, vandalism and stealing, while ODD is marked by a pattern of angry or irritable mood, argumentative or defiant behavior, and vindictiveness. ... In another recent study, Nagata and colleagues found that adolescents are so attached to their phones--the main vehicle for screen time--that they report losing track of time when using their phone (47.5%) and will interrupt whatever they are doing when contacted by phone (31%). ...
The average amount of screen time was four hours per day, with the most time spent watching/streaming TV shows/movies (1.3 hours on average), playing video games (1.1 hours), and watching/streaming videos (1 hour). In fact, four hours a day was a threshold, with time above four hours associated with a 69% higher prevalence of conduct disorder and a 46% higher prevalence of ODD.

I knew a stripper back in Connecticut who paid her way through Connecticut College by taking her clothes off dancing on a pole and getting paid for it. She did 4 years there and walked away with a BA degree and zero college debt. CC is one of the most expensive private Colleges in the US.

I have a nephew who's a cop. They set up bogus online accounts all the time to catch bad guys. Usual drill busty chick, "do you wanna meet?" kind of deal. Even more hilarious, guy has several warrants out on him, takes a selfie with a street sign in the background, cops notice the picture isn't that old and they roll a regular black & white up on the perp and make it look like a traffic stop rather than arrest for outstanding warrant.

From my interaction with Gen Z, I've decided that the best of them are still quite intelligent, ambitious, hard-working -- maybe more promising, in some ways, than the best of previous generations.
But the distribution is now skewed with Gen Z -- the left tail is much thicker than the right, and the center of the curve has moved left (where left represents low IQ and sloth.)
And even the brightest of the lot, while possessing high native intelligence, tends to be poorly educated compared even to my generation (not that far back -- I graduated high school in 1984.)

Yup. They had a name and a fan base. It's really rough making a living at YouTube/Twitch unless you got in early, do porn art, are a hot girl or got lucky. I have a good friend who is ekeing out a living doing it. I'm hoping he decides to change careers some day because I love him and hate seeing him suffer.

Top DayZ (relatively small base, obscure game) Twitch streamer has about 5K monthly subs, at about $3/ea. That is before donations, bits (fractional Twitch dollars), sponsorships, and youtube revenue. It's a decent living even in first world nations.
But there are thousands who are making far less to nothing at it. The next two to three streamers sum to about 5K subscribers, and it tails off expectedly. The pro-sports analogy is apt.

I don't know. I find it harder to listen these days, but that's because PEOPLE TALK SOOOOO LONG. I got a call the other day from someone I'm working with on a church project, and he literally talked for 17 minutes straight. I notice it more with some family members as well. Are people so deprived of socializing these days that they can't tell when they've lost an audience?

This might (possibly) be Garland saving himself more embarrassment by providing (and least overt) cover that the DoJ are not going to do dump of all confidential material to the Jan-6 Inquisition.

I know how happy I was when my son started getting summer jobs in high school. Amazing how earning money, having to take orders from an adult non-parent and dealing with customers "raises awareness" of how the world really works. There are also a lot of useful channels where they share household tips, repair tips, etc. People think the worst when they think "social media influencer", and there are plenty of stupid shallow things like that. But just as people have made a career of blogging and vlogging, "social media influencer" seems to be the next thing.

I think its a relative thing. Cats generally won't come when called, are fine being on their own, are less demonstrative than a dog, etc. If you're used to the desperate need to be around someone and fawn all over them they way dogs can, a cat will seem pretty indifferent.

That's right, he's another great example. I can't remember what MLB video of his that got everyone to take notice a year or two ago. Was something of the Yankees, as he is a Yankees fan. And I think it was within a year, he just went from obscure YouTuber to being hired by the Yankees or MLB or something. Nice success story there.

Some cats are too high strung to allow that kind of closeness but they show it in their own way if you watch their lives how they watch yours. One of mine has brought himself to allow touch for a few minutes a day, as long as he is doing the walking and my hand stays still.
