The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

As the drunken and demented speaker of the house wanders off to Asia on a junket whose purpose is murky at best and destructive at worst, the bought-and-paid-for national media isn't bothering with pesky and unwelcome questions like: "Madame Speaker, why are you going to Asia?"

Pelosi said in a statement she is leading a congressional delegation to Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea and Japan to discuss trade, the Covid-19 pandemic, climate change, security and "democratic governance."

Oh good! A prepared statement. That answers all of the questions.

Ignoring the time-honored congressional perk of going on taxpayer-paid vacations, complete with well-stocked bar (and underage hookers?), the timing of this visit is awkward and potentially inflammatory. Will she visit Taiwan? It is the administration -- not Congress -- that is responsible for foreign policy, and at a time when tensions with China are high, we do not need competing chaotic messages...we get plenty from the White House!

But the situation is getting better and better, as we just got this news!

Who knows what is going on. But that is a lot of tanker support!

Pelosi and her equally corrupt husband were caught ~~front-running~~* trading some semiconductor stock (on her inside information obviously!) and had to dump it because of the optics. Never mind that you and I would have gone to jail for the same thing! Is this trip somehow connected to their insider trading of stocks in an industry that is on the verge of receiving a huge payday from uncle sugar?

And if she goes to Taiwan, and it looks like she is (her plane has reportedly landed there), it will ratchet up tensions with China, but if she doesn't go to Taiwan that will be seen as a snub of Taiwan and their struggle against the communist mainland and its lust for their riches.

So what is the point of this trip? Obviously there is some grift in play, because Pelosi and her sleazy ilk don't get out of bed every morning without a plan to steal some taxpayer money. Or is it some demented power play between two senile politicians? Is this Pelosi's first move in some far-fetched game to become president...showing America that she has foreign policy chops? Probably not, but I imagine that she has dreamed of the oval office, so I wouldn't put anything past her.

One thing we can all count on is that the results of this trip will be bad for America, bad for the American people, but good for a small number of well-connected grifters inside the beltway, and some congressmen, but I repeat myself.

11 Repost - Today is a test for some of the pollsters I pay attention to. There are some I trust and I lot I disregard because I know they are biased (Quinnipiac, I'm looking at you). I'll post this comment a couple times today, so going on the record.

If the pollsters I trust are correct, then we will get the following results today:

Arizona - Both Lake and Masters will win by double digits.

Missouri - Schmidt will survive the dick stepping that his pollster did thanks to Trump letting people know he will support either Schmidt or Greiten. Schmidt will win by low single digits

Michigan - Dixon will win by over 15. In MI-03 Gibbs will beat Meijer by over 10.

Washington - In WA-03, Kent will advance to November in the jungle primary, Butler is about 50/50 to advance and try to hold her seat. There have been shenanigans here with lies about Trump's endorsement, which will have an unknown effect.

Kansas - The abortion amendment will pass by about 5 points.

They own a lot of our ruling class, but oddly they haven't actually gotten everything they wanted. The Trump-era tariffs on steel and aluminum still stand, for example, and our Navy is still very active in and near what China considers (but that no one else agrees is) their territorial waters.

China has not gotten its entire wish list out of the junta. I do not know why. Palace intrigue, I suspect.

Plus the entire thing on the CCP side is a propaganda exercise. Putting a fleet of tankers in the air and keeping your combat forces in action for long periods of time demonstrates to them that you have a level of equipment, skill, logistics and combat capability that should give them pause.

Beyond tactics, it is probably a counter-propaganda exercise. It won't reach the Chinese people, of course, but it will certainly reach the CCP brass.

I don't think they move against Taiwan now. If they move now, it means that they are highly confident - as in, they have solid reason to believe that it is a sure bet - that they will win, win quickly, win with minimal Chinese losses and retain the prizes they want and need in Taiwan (the high-tech industry).

The CCP's Party Congress is in a couple of months and Xi is very likely to be reinstalled for his third term and essentially made emperor. Starting a war with Taiwan that goes sideways will end that possibility promptly and possible even trigger a coup from the non-Xi factions.

If China is going to move against Taiwan - and it's entirely possible that they will - it is more likely to happen in the spring or summer, after Xi's coronation and following his final consolidation of power, primarily in that vital Eastern Military District. I suspect the current stuff is for domestic propaganda purposes.

Can't count anyone in or out at this stage for Republican nomination plus what they will actually run on. Same with voter enthusiasms in January 2024 and November 2024. Plus the cheating factor.

It is always possible that Xi, just like our own politicians, is a big blow hard who's so full of himself that he has no idea of what to do if anyone actually stands up to him and refuses to do what he says. Suppose he decides to go all-in with support of Russia; well that wouldn't change too much from what he's doing already, but it would spark a trade war with the US, which he doesn't need right now.

There's a difference between casting a wider net to haul in vote that isn't in your base and trying to recruit from the opponent's base. Recruiting from the opponent's base is difficult and few have succeeded (Trump did, by hauling in the disaffected part of the Dem base, namely the blue-collar people). Since we're in a realignment now, there's even more reason to snipe people out of the opponent's base and bring them over. Based on its content, however, the View does not represent ripe waters for fishing. They're hardcore, hysterical leftists and the audience is strongly likely to be the same. No point in fishing from there.

Meh. I lived through the Cold War with several such moments. No major power really wants to go nuclear including the WEF oligarchs because the outcome would be unpredictable for those in power. Best to keep those as a threat. We have already been in proxy wars before with both major powers and the primary weapons for any conflict with China that would be used are naval and air weapons that have not been sent to Ukraine. This is the problem with assigning and conflating opinions to large groups of people.

People saying Trump made strategic mistakes were almost invariably *wrong*. The amount of "free advice" given to him - the amount of times "it was over" - as he rose through the R ranks and eventually stomped Hillary was hilarious.

440 People forget that DeSantis is up for reelection in 2022. DeSantis is nothing but disciplined and is focused primarily on that (I hope) and a smashing reelection victory will make him more attractive as a national candidate. Plus Florida gets at least two more years of sound policies to boot.

Going on the View at this time is a risk that is not worth it at the present time because the upside is limited and whatever good vibes will be gone by 2024 while a mistake can dog DeSantis going forward. If I was a political advisor, I would advise him to stay away until after winning reelection--then reevaluate. Right now, it would be all of the View's harpies going after DeSantis on abortion and Don't Say Gay nonsense for the whole show trying to paint him as a right wing kook. Who needs that PR.

Not allowing editing
Not allowing partisan hacks to have any part in debates
Pointing out when "republicans pounce" is used
Noting when networks try to throw elections by calling states early.

That have have been true prior to 2019, but since Beijing has eliminated (in all but name) the "one country, two systems" concept and forcibly turned Hong Kong into what is essentially a special province, there is probably less appetite for that kind of soft merger.

Have you ever met native Taiwanese? There is ethnic animosity between the majority native Taiwanese and Han Chinese dating back centuries and the percentage of Han Chinese is about the same as blacks in the US. To some degree they have more resistance to infiltration than we do plus as demonstrated during Covid crisis, they have very effective people control coming in and off the island. We are sloppy and careless because we have two oceans to protect us from invasion. Places like Singapore, Japan, Israel, S. Korea, are a bit more serious than we are in internal security matters because the threat to them is imminent.

537 I've come to the conclusion that the dems have been cheating in elections on a corporate scale since after WWII. Refining their process as they go along, learning from mistakes and improving the next steal. It's allowed them to take increasingly unpopular positions knowing they will not suffer for them. The truth is that the GOP more or less stopped rural cheating but the Dems never did in the big cities. After national elections moved to popular voting in the 1830's, cheating and ballot box stuffing became a regular event every two years including rural areas as well as cities. Voting got so putrid that eventually the powers that be decided that we should adopt voter registration, campaign finance, etc. after they eliminated the spoils system. Eventually each state adopted uniform laws reluctantly in some cases. All that meant is that new ways to cheat both in campaign finance and voting happened. Tammany Hall and NYC elections are a perfect example of how cheating adapts to new laws.

I've known many models. Maybe 20% are highly intelligent. These are the ones who recognize their career is very short so they are preparing for their future. 20% are complete morons, just really truly dumb. They think the party will go on forever and then seem shocked when it doesn't. 40% are in the average range with some above and some below. The remaining 20% get caught up in heavy drugs and booze and destroy themselves, so it's hard to know where they would be if not for that.
