67 And today's stupid alarmist on climate change from someone in CA:

In one way, the metaphor that Al Gore offered about law-enforcement officers in Uvalde is far too kind (“Al hot shot at Uvalde officers,” July 25).

The orders the police officers in Uvalde were following were largely based upon the incompetence of leadership. That is not the case with blockage of climate legislation — that results from the conscious decision of Republican legislators to follow the orders of fossil-fuel interests and protect the profits that flow from the climate-destroying use of carbon-rich fossil fuels.

This is not incompetence. It is the knowing sacrifice of the lives and well-being of billions of people, to benefit a virtual handful of the already wealthy. The midterm elections are a match-up of plutocracy for the very few versus environmental protection for the very many. Vote like your life depends upon it — because it does.

71 And today sensible letter in the NY Post:

Christopher F. Rufo’s LA Puts ‘Gender Theory’ Before Kids (July 23) remarks how Los Angeles public schools are promoting keeping the student’s gender identity a secret from parents if the student so desires.
Rufo forgot to mention that California could be leading the way with a distinct new gender-affirming tool at public schools. Fremont High School in Oakland started a new chapter of The Transition Closet.

The idea is for students to come to school in the clothes their parents prefer, then change into the cross-gender clothes they prefer. Like Clark Kent entering the phone booth and leaving as Superman.

I pine for the good old days when public schools only dealt with the three Rs: reading, ’riting and ’rithmetic.

90 Today, in the United States, it is popular to sneer at patriotism. They seem to think that it is axiomatic than any civilized man is a pacifist, and they treat the military profession with contempt. "Warmongers"--"Imperialists"--"Hired killers in uniform"--you have all heard such sneers and you will hear them again. One of their favorite quotations is: "Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel."

What they never mention is that the man who made that sneering wisecrack was a fat, gluttonous slob who was pursued all his life by a pathological fear of death.

Our small town has a girls' softball league, but when the kids are young, the boys' league has better training in general sporting rules and techniques. Girls are usually more coordinated and bigger as kids, so there was some grumbling about girls taking over, but the girls' group devolved into princess training. Learning sportsmanship is an important skill as we saw this week with a USRepresentative displaying the training she received.

My strategy is to file CPT11 bankruptcy, and then get a list of the properties that Oberlin owns and is leasing out to third parties, get the list of stock accounts, and get the list of undergrads from last term, and issue garnishments based on the court decision.

"IF YOU OWE A DEBT TO THE DEBTOR THAT WILL BECOME DUE WITHIN 45 DAYS AFTER THE DATE YOU RECEIVED THE NOTICE, you must send your payment directly to the Garnishor at the address provided in the notice when the debt becomes due. Make your check payable to the Garnishor . . ."

194 At least lacrosse is recognizably lacrosse, but in field hockey they constantly stop the flow of play for "reasons". Indoor hockey is at least very fast moving. And why can't the girls wear helmets? Dumb rule. One time, at an indoor game, my daughter took a shot right off her head and it knocked her out. Obviously illegal shot, and purposefully done by a frustrated little shit of a forward tired of getting her clock cleaned. A helmet would have helped, and, also, they should have banned that twat permenantly except Pennsylvania field hockey protects its own (just look at who dominates US Field Hockey). I'm still mad.

195 My youngest three all rowed crew in HS. The two boys were on fantastic teams that went to nationals and placed.

My daughter's team was so-so - it was more a recreational sport for them.

Guess who was heavily recruited and then had college mostly paid for due to the demands of Title IX?

C'mon - guess. (There is damn little scholarship $$$ for men's crew).

ps - she partied her brains out, fully embraced deviant lifestyles and then flunked out. And when you are a Div I athlete, that takes some doing.

196 March 2019- A record home crowd turned out at Sandy Park to watch the Red Roses move within touching distance of clinching the Grand Slam on Saturday. England defeated Italy 55-0 in front of 10,545 supporters to continue their unbeaten run in the Women’s Six Nations, with the free-scoring Jess Breach scoring a brace for the hosts. The attendance more than doubled the previous English record for a non-World Cup game, which was 4,674

I take back what I implied about massive fan appeal. Must have been standing room only. And hey, that 55-0 score just screams'compelling competitive narrative'.

Well indoor tends to leave us all with bad memories. Indoor SHOULD be a better (safer) game but yeah I'll blame USAFH for a lot of that PLUS the clubs themselves. Did you see that Delaware just decided - forget helmets! - in DE no facemarks are allowed at all? EVEN FOR CORNERS IN INDOOR?!?!

anyway this is all inside "baseball" for everyone else here. glad your daughter enjoyed the game enough to play in college! that's when it (usually) gets way more fun. my daughter is loving her college team and coaches.

the rules changes usually seemingly have to do with pissed off and influential club coaches making them happen lol...

222 All sports have idiosyncratic rules.

In rugby the big one is the offside rule. You can be on the wrong side of the ball but can't doing anything to help your team until you get back onside. Once you see this, a lot of what's going on makes sense.

The other thing is why do people kick when they do. It's usually a tradeoff of giving up possession vs. gaining territory

Well...you don't spit in the face of your masters.

A proper response would've been to fly into Taiwan anyway with back channels warning of severe repercussions should the Speaker's plane even meet a bit of turbulence on the way in.

But...nope.

Pelosi is an unworthy American representative and unworthy of her position as Speaker of the House.
On the upside, she's got grifting and cowardice down to a fine art.

You use it for taking the hair off the hides. It is used in a lot of things having to do with fats and oils, as well as making munitions and fertilizers

Most of the wood ash processes are leaching out the lye and then concentrating it. "boil the lye water down to where it will float a fresh egg" is a standard instruction in the old recipes for soap. I have used wood ash to make hominy and corn meal masa (because of course I have)

Alternately you can spread wood ash on your garden for potash.
Some people are concerned about too much Potassium from the ash degrading the nutritional value of the veggies and counsel against doing that.
I spread the ashes on my lawn

I played field hockey at both junior and high school. You are only allowed to use the flat part of the blade, not the curved reverse side. You may not lift the stick above the shoulder - really a safety consideration. The ball is bigger than a baseball and is hard. Players may wear shin pads. That's it. The goalkeeper (me) had full length leg pads and gloves, no mask. I think they have a mask now as too many teeth and noses got broken. It's fast. The Indians and Pakistanis are usually very good players.
