Tech News

  • Indonesia has blocked Steam.

Expect riots when fans don't get their daily fix of Squirrel Drives Truck.

(Risu is a big fan of European Truck Simulator.)

  • Speaking of Steam, if you were expecting to receive your Steam Deck early in 2023, Valve has news: Shipping dates have been moved to late 2022. (Liliputing)

Yes, that's two items of good news in one day. No, I don't know what's going on either.

  • If you were looking for a small but capable Android phone the Asus Zenfone 9 might be it. (Liliputing)

It has a 5.9" screen, but it's almost all screen so it's almost exactly the same size as Google's 5" Pixel 2 from five years ago.

  • AMD's upcoming Ryzen 7600X beats Intel's 12900K by 22% on one obviously broken benchmark. (Tom's Hardware)

The number might be real, because apart from the general design improvements and increased clock speeds, Zen 4 has twice as much L2 cache as Zen 3. Looking at just one benchmark you might find that it suddenly fits in cache and runs dramatically faster.

Realistically, the 7600X could have about the same single-threaded performance as the 12900K, and probably a little less. It will be much cheaper and use a fraction of the power, though; it's not intended at all to compete with Intel's high end chips.

  • Micron has announced plans to expand its US-based memory manufacturing. (Tom's Hardware)

I question the timing. Well, no, I don't; they said quite openly that this is because of the CHIPS handout passed yesterday.

  • In another gift to AMD Intel is planning to raise prices by up to 20% across the board. (WCCFTech)

"Up to" being the operative term, they probably have a hundred people doing nothing but modelling how much they can get away with. Intel knows that AMD can't supply the entire market, but on the other hand customers can just choose to wait, particularly with a RECESSION going on right now.

  • Gaming in a cold climate: Intel's fastest, hottest, most expensive desktop CPU mostly loses to AMD's much cheaper 5800X3D. (AnandTech)

The 12900KS peaks at 270W where the 5800X3D uses just 112W, so unless you also need to keep your igloo toasty warm, AMD is the better bet.

On productivity tasks the 8+8 core 12900KS does handily beat the 8 core 5800X3D, but there you'd probably look to the 5950X on the AMD side - which is also much cheaper than the 12900KS, and also uses much less power, peaking at 142W.

100 From the CDC webswite:
Monkeypox can spread to anyone through close, personal, often skin-to-skin contact, including:
Direct contact with monkeypox rash, scabs, or body fluids from a person with monkeypox.
Touching objects, fabrics (clothing, bedding, or towels), and surfaces that have been used by someone with monkeypox.
Contact with respiratory secretions.

As for whether we are winning, in any conflict there are points where you have the advantage and others were you're being beaten.

I think in the big picture we are winning, which is why all the cheating is taking place. The problem with cheating is that it's self-limiting because either the cheat only works once or - if it becomes endemic - the whole system (which the Dems desperately need to stay intact) collapses.

It's interesting that there are all these whistleblower types coming forward when it's too late.

I'm thinking that they figured they'd ride out the storm, but the Dems are purging everyone who isn't 100% with the program. So it's their last play.

Once again, I will note that our greatest ally is entropy, Clauswitzian "friction." The more the Dems thrash around, the more resistance they are creating to themselves. People are far more pissed off than they were a year ago, and the idea of an actual 'color revolution' is starting to take root.

The revelations that the Feds are behind all the insurrections, is also important because it means that the next time will be for real. I'm sure a lot of folks are looking at the J6 martyrs and thinking that if you're going to jail anyway, you may as well have some fun in the process.

160 I am curious whether the latest Radeon drivers fixed whatever was not playing nice with Il-2 Great Battles. For whatever reason, the RX 6900 XT ends up performing worse than a 5700 XT in that game, and it's a small enough dev team they haven't been able to figure out what was causing it.

On the Arc cards, don't know if you follow Moore's Law is Dead, but apparently part of the problem is that the Arc division has not been entirely (or even remotely) honest with the rest of Intel, and things are about to get... spicy...

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if several heads of that division get fired over the stuff they're doing. Large chunks of Arc may well end up on the cutting room floor, but I don't think Intel can afford to abandon graphics long term, even if the first few Arc generations are having problems.

The low end is heading towards SoCs, and will probably take the mid-range with it, and the high end margins are in AI accelerators, which right now is GPU space stuff.

I just don't see how they can maintain being a high margin company without being able to perform in the GPU space as well.
