75 Morning again, all,

Regarding final arrangements for family members . . . When my mother died in '86, I found she had a small insurance policy to cover things. She had always wanted to be cremated -- she'd drilled that into my brother and me from an early age -- so I did that. (I had to get my brother's written agreement according to state law; and he was with the Moonies in NY, so I had to ship him a form. He signed it.)

The hell of the whole thing was, I couldn't grieve properly. I was going through an agonizing separation from Mrs. Wolfus No. 2 (which ended in divorce), moving, and getting and staying sober. Stress indeed.

100 Everyone is already drooling over the potentially huge COLA increase for social security next year. What they aren't paying attention to is the fact that it lags inflation by a year or more and we are already under water from the last increase.

The Guatemalan illegal immigrant charged with raping and impregnating an Ohio 10-year-old who traveled to Indiana for an abortion was listed as a minor in the report the Indiana-based abortionist sent to authorities.

Dr. Caitlin Bernard reported that the alleged rapist was approximately 17-years-old in an official filing to the Indiana Department of Health obtained Thursday by Fox News Digital.

Trying to sort this out. How much natural gas do the Saudis produce? You'd think they'd be using that to generate electricity since it's more difficult to export? Or is this a short term thing where they converted some sites to run on oil, just to take advantage of the situa5?

I also think that Democrats, and I’m one of those people, we love information and research and data. And I think sometimes we fundamentally believe if we show people enough information that we can convince them otherwise.
And I think critical race theory is a perfect example of how the strategy and the response were completely out of step. [Conservative activist and member of the right-wing Manhattan Institute think tank] Chris Rufo has flat-out admitted he created the fear around critical race theory. He has said he wanted anything related to The 1619 Project or diversity, equity, and inclusion, or Black Lives Matter, or really anything about an accurate teaching of history, he wanted everybody to think of critical race theory when they heard any of those things.
And the response from a lot of Democrats was to debate the merits of it, to say, you know, critical race theory is not taught in schools, that it is a graduate-level theory. But by doing that, you validate the false premise, instead of what I think is a much more powerful response is call bullshit, bullshit

Taylor also founded The World Can’t Wait, Inc., (TWCW) alongside another RCP devotee in 2006 to oppose the Bush administration, particularly its policies in the Middle East.

Taylor went on to co-found another organization, Refuse Fascism, in 2016 to resist the incoming Trump administration.

197 I'm quite interested in how the abortion thing is going to play out in Michigan. PP and the ACLU (hah!) got 700,000 signatures on a constitutional amendment that "guarantees reproductive freedom" but really is the abortionists' dream.

It's interesting to see that even lefty sites are starting to caution people that getting lots of signatures doesn't mean the thing is going to pass. In fact, 6 out of the top 7 biggest signature-getters failed at the ballot box.

The reason is of course that they LIE about what the proposal does and when people actually learn what's on the ballot they freak out.

Right to Life of Michigan has announced an unprecedented mobilization to beat this thing, which will strike down 40 existing state laws and basically enshrine late-term abortion for minors with no parental notification.

Whitmer's naturally for it. We'll see how it plays out.

He's now 100 years old, and finished the book last year. The writing is incredibly lucid and captures the sense of disconnectedness to reality among the French in the days leading up to the war. The odds are decent. As I've said a million times, the Dems had surprise on their side. That's gone. The state GOP has been training poll watchers and the lawsuits are ready to fly if something is hinky.

They've also got the signature drive for the voter ID bill about to wind up. I think that will be in effect for November.

Whitmer's latest polling looks pretty bad. The GOP front-runner (who I've never heard of) is pulling 40% against Whitmer's 51%. That's pretty lousy given the polling firm usually overcounts Dems by 5%.

They should demand that we do what the Islamic World does - they take the injunction against charging interest seriously, and it is banned in almost all Islamic Countries. But you know what is allowed? Lenders are allowed to charge a "Service Fee" for granting the loan, which can be paid back over time, which miraculously works out to be the exact same amount as they would have gotten if they charged interest. So that's how to do it.

Fun historical factoid - the Medieval Christian Church took the position that ALL interest was usury; therefore NO Christian in good standing would dare lend any money to anyone for anything. BUT lending is a required part of any functioning economy; so Christian princes and others needing money turned to the Jewish community to provide what they needed, which is how money lending became thought of as a Jewish avocation. The medieval Europeans hated them but they also needed them.

CAT got it in one.

In all seriousness, though, they're pretty dangerous, so if you are uncertain where to start looking for a leak or why it's leaking, it might be worth calling a friend or a pro. I'm not sure if I'd recommend troubleshooting one as a casual job.

That said, I think you should only have an in and out and a drain, and a blowoff. Don't touch the blowoff. Matter of fact, I'm going back to my original thought. You might want to just call someone if it's not the in or out that need tightening.

The issue with heating vs cooling is that A/C uses far more electricity than most heating. A portable generator can power your furnace. You need a massive machine to power the A/C.

When we lost power, I had no way of connecting the furnace to the generator and no electricians were available because of the ice storm. So for the first couple of days, we used the fireplace and ran space heaters. The main room was toasty, and that was where we all slept. My youngest actually loved it, because the whole family sacked out in front of the fireplace.

Once I got the furnace connected, things were pretty normal. Even running the fridge helped because it gives off heat. Summer would have been miserable.

330 The donks are far from incompetent. They are very adept at cheating and controlling the narrative, as well as avoiding accountability while promoting lawlessness. Pelosi's husband's latest stock triumph is a case in point, and you can bet that the outcry will be minimal against him and all the other inside traders.

The destruction is deliberate, not accidental, and the pols are making money on this. While Manchin may be double dealing on climate, he can just as easily say he's responding to political pressure to vote with the greenies. His FB page is overwhelmed by people urging him to save the poor imperiled planet. People here are blissfully unaware of Sr Lanka or the millions on the street in Europe fighting against this bullshit

333 "The heater is sitting in a big round pan that has about half an inch of warm water in it."

Sounds like the tank is leaking if the pipes look ok. The pan may be leaking too. There may be a drain line from it that goes outside to the AC condensate line and it may be plugged. If you can see it you can poke some wire down it and maybe unstop it.

I disagree insofar as the Uvalde cops knew there was something going on. I think the Dems are trying to pretend that nothing is going on. They don't even want to admit it's an issue because it's too scary to contemplate.

Depends on the size and type.

You can find them at big box stores for $500-$1000 typically.

Then there are the hybrid heat pump style hot water heaters that probably don't work very well and cost $2500-$3500.

It's the installation cost that'll cost you.

I want to point out - at my expense - the comedy of this exchange. This wasn't a "put your phone in the microwave" or "slap hot iron to it" joke. I f*cked up. That is not a thing.

The real word is anode. I have a disassembled stereo receiver nearby that I've been tinkering with this morning and "diode" was in my head, and I referenced something that doesn't exist in my advice to you.

"I need someone who knows what they're doing" is pretty great in context of that.
