The Weekend Hobby Thread

IMG_0675.jpg

One of my oil paintings. Dusk at Cape Cod

I haven't painted in a few years. The hobby thread has me thinking about starting again. Thanks.- Anti doesn't matter

***

Just a couple of observations. First of all, I really like this painting. If you are here today, can you comment on the size of this piece.

Secondly, I'm happy that the Hobby Thread encouraged you resume your hobby. If you are like me you can paint and forget about everything except for what is in front of you on your easel. And that's what a hobby is supposed to do.

The old In-box here at petmorons at gmail was pretty empty this past week. So I found the following link: How To Find A Hobby

Hobbies vs. Interests
When you are thinking about choosing a hobby, it’s important that you don’t confuse having an “interest” with having a “hobby.”

Interests: Interests typically are the desire to learn about something. An interest can spawn from natural curiosity, professional goals or family experiences. For instance, you may have an interest in learning more about hockey or volleyball because your children are involved in those sports. Or you may love reading books on behavior to help you achieve career goals. But unlike hobbies, an interest requires only intellectual action (to learn about something) and doesn’t require physical action.

Hobby: A hobby is usually defined as any enjoyable leisure activity that we engage in voluntarily and consistently when we are free from the demands of work or other responsibilities. A hobby may be inspired by an interest, but it typically requires more commitment and involves taking action, like learning a new skill, or collecting, building or creating something. Hobbies are essentially the active pursuit of a personal interest.

14 My current hobby is cleaning out our house. Which is good, but not necessarily fun. We ain't hoarders, but we tend to procrastinate when tending to the cardboard recyclables.

Oh, and avoiding being outside. It's 99 and sunny. Alas, we are heading up to Estes Park to attend a rodeo. Mrs. Mahon has never been to a rodeo. I have, because I grew up in Cody, Wyoming. it was inevitable.

15 Like the painting, anti. The idea I am thinking you are going for is that it is hard to tell where the sea ends and the sky begins. My initial thought was that I would like a hard parting line between the two, but I am often an idiot.

17 And the painting is 18" x 24" .

The art thread commenters would have fun with most of my other paintings because even though I like to do realistic works most of my stuff is modern / abstract. I'm a big boy so I could take it.

With a new engine, a recent bottom inspection (shut up), fresh varnish all around and brand new cockpit cushions, I really have no excuse not to back it out of the slip, head out for the bounding main and let her fly.

I'm going to try to make it over to Nashville for Nashcon next month. Same idea, but they mix some scifi/fantasy in with the historical so it's more of a big-tent affair. I had wanted to do that last year, but got sick right before the event.

Speaking of farm animals, I really want some in 28mm scale. Supposedly the aforementioned WGA has them in their pipeline but who knows when they'll come out. Others I've seen from boutique vendors don't look so good.

22 I consider this tangential at best, but my lifelong friend's dad and uncle were friends with James Bama, who passed away not too long ago. Friend's uncle created Old Trail Town in Cody WY. Friend's Dad is a Western artist who has done oil paintings and bronze sculptures that often featured moments in Wyoming history.

Some folks have a passion that cannot be ignored. I often wonder why I do not have that passion.

35 Cicero, really? 70 miles away and a bit inland, it's just a typical beautiful SoCal summer day, warm and clear, just a light breeze, yesterday was stronger.

Is this craft suitable for going over to Catalina, or too small for that?

My friend with the beautiful cruising catamaran that he tragically sold just as I came back to the area used to do trips this time of year over to the islands. I'd usually just be on for the San Clemente/Catalina portion, then jump off and take the hydrofoil back to Dana Pt. or hop over to my late friend's boat, as he was often over there during summer, and come back to Dana that way.

San Clemente Island is something.

Thank you, I didn't get to finish. Vet did X-ray of Marty and no broken bones so probably just a bruise. Strange that he was dumped even though he had obviously been somebody's pet for a very short while (flea collar). Apparently there were two of them but someone else took the other kitten. I've been wondering about Eva and Wally too. Did they just wander into that carrier or did somebody sneak in and dump them? We've had dumped cats before. All of ours are strays.

Actually, there's about a 6-8 knot westerly wind here in Dana Point now (my estimate). It's a bit choppy but still doable.

The boat could go to Catalina but it would be a long trip by sail. The accommodations make it more like camping than yachting.

I formerly had a nice 35-ft aft cabin power boat that was very comfortable for weekends. I made a lot of trips to Avalon in it. I doubt that I'll be taking this one over.

My friend's cruising cat, which I dubbed "the condo on the water", had a 15-foot beam. Anchoring off the cliffs in Pyramid Cove at San Clemente was fantastic. Sea life jumping and bubbling all around, great spearfishing.

And occasionally entertainment in the form of F-18s flying in low/fast over the nearby coast, or the special boat guys doing their thing up the bay. Only place I know of that has 4 different advisory zones for mariners/et al, from 100s of feet *under* the water to 1,000s of feet above it.

Active minds without a hobby actively look for things to solve. Solutions looking for problems.

85 One of the things I do is mess around with synthesizers and recording software. So I bought a Roland Neova Ring controller. which was exactly what it sounded like--a ring you put on your finger and, when you moved it around in the air, it changed various parameters of what you we're working on.

(Before you ask, I've barely taken it out of the box.)

The reason I refer to it in the past tense is that the company went out of business. You can still get them at Sweetwater, at around $100 which is much less than the original $350 tag.

86 Miniature gaming runs all the way through the political spectrum, at TMP there are lots of Leftists but think there are more conservatives.

In my mind I had it limited to historic military miniatures but I see now that it includes fantasy miniatures as well which would appeal to some on the left spectrum. Or am I off base again?

Posted by: Anti doesn't matter at July 09, 2022 05:45

From my observation most young people in the hobby start with fantasy/sci fi miniatures and a small percentage of that group gravitate over to historical miniatures. Politics usually don't enter into the miniature war gaming world too much that I have seen, and I have been playing since the late 70s.

If I had to guess I would say the majority of historical miniature players are conservatives but that's just my own experience.

Posted by: Anti doesn't matter at July 09, 2022 05:57 PM (4+wAL)

Hmm, long story really. Harleys started as a hobby, basically just putt around town listening to the drag pipes. After some years I knew my way around them to actually build and fix them. That lead me to where I could quit the family business of home improvements because the hours weren't as flexible as I needed them to be, so then the harley thing became my fallback with flexible hours which I needed to pursue my main objective of music/guitar, which started as an interest when I was 7, a serious hobby by age 12, picking up speed by age 15, and a total over the top out of control galactic consuming obsession at age 18, which was/is my main focus in life. I blame that one on an epic set of boobs in a leopard print top, which is a story I have told before.

Try some more Zap-a-gap and see if that helps.

A lot of gamers are personally conservative but political liberal because that's the world they inhabit. Back in 2002-3, I was shocked at how many people who spent their time writing "BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!" on their tanks and building torture chambers were total anti-war lefities.

Then again, Warhammer 40k tends to skew European online so it's part of their culture.

I think the "serious" board gamers (the kind who play Imperivm Romanvm or the Brigade Series) are more conservative than most.

It's their top of the line set and the price is usually $260 on Amazon. The sale price is down to $200. I don't need it as I have accumulated the items over the years. Now a porcelain crucible from your nearest Chemistry Lab will be great and won't contaminate the copper. Pouring it cleanly in situ and removing the excess is probably more of a problem. 0 Gauge (O gauge) and accessories run from 1/43 to 1/50, even though the nominal scale is 1/48. Some (e.g., "O-27") is even smaller, even though still running on the same track and generally interchangeable with O.

Which reminds me, I need to get back into the train room and rearrange my layout. I had to take up the "bed room" branch a couple of years ago to let the HVAC guys up into the attic. Haven't done much with it since.

165 Ben Had,

I've never tried to inlay wire into wood but have seen it demonstrated in a video. Basically, a shallow groove in the desired design is carved into the wood, as close to the thickness of the wire as possible. Tap it into place and sand everything flat and smooth.

Sorry I can't be more helpful. There are quite a few videos on Youtube about it. Not sure I have a sufficiently delicate touch but the results looked damned interesting.

I'm an occasional tabletop 40K player and I'd agree with that assessment. A lot of the people that are into it are very loyal to the local game store(s) but not so much GW, whom they view with no small share of antipathy due to years of corporate arrogance and questionable business decisions. I don't mind GW for the most part, but I wasn't active in the late 2000s, early 2010s when they were *really* bad. The Magic tables attract a lot of younger and/or freaky-looking types whereas the Warhammer customer base is older, leaning toward professionals. Even the odd ones--and there are some odd ones here, let me say--would be more at home in a Clerks movie than a bleak social media dystopian misadventure.

Some of the men aren't better either, but the ones I've known are either older, retired or they had a genuine calling and most were very fine pastors. if you're going into the ministry because you fundamentally went to be a "woke" pastor and Jesus is the standard bearer for Progressive theology you don't belong in the pastorate, or need to go join the Unitarians. 235 Huck I have the letters cut out of very thin copper sheet. Melting copper is a bitch. I have done it as an inlay on some tables filling natural holes in the wood.

Maybe etch with a dremel then, to size, and figure out some way to adhere the letters you've made. But I'm probably no person to talk about this. Beyond my ken.

Posted by: Huck Follywood at July 09, 2022 06:31 PM (Yawo6)

In guitar building land we would use an xacto knife to carefully cut along the letters to get the outline in the wood, then carefully remove the right amount of wood to inlay the letter so its flush with the surface, then use powdered dye to stain the epoxy to the color of the wood, then inlay the letters into the epoxy. After it dries you use a small scraper, or razor blade to to scrape everything smooth and flush. For guitars it would then get clear coated, but for a gun stock thats a different deal.

Before he got promoted, our unit chaplain was Missouri Synod Lutheran. I used to tease him about the various hijinks of his co-religionists.

Of course, my go-to line was: "You know, Chaplain, I've decided Martin Luther was right and the Catholic Church is all wrong. I want to be a Lutheran! But how do I know which one is the right one? There's so many out there? These ELCA people seem nice..."

Unlike the previous HH edition, this one is managed by mainline GW rather than the specialist division. They've signaled that their intent is to offer both of their major franchises in two versions, modern rules (40K/Sigmar) and classic rules (HH/Old World).

This is not an answer to your actual question but a suggestion for an alternative that might achieve a more-or-less similar result. If you're strongly set on the copper sheets, ignore this.

You can get powdered copper to mix with resin and use that to fill the inletting. Then, as Berserker mentioned above, sand or scrape to level it with the wood.

Yes; The ELCA is quite different than the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. Then again, according to the site Church Militant some of the pastors and hierarchy in the RCC aren't exactly covering themselves with glory either. I think a priest who takes vows of celibacy and then repeatedly has assignations on the gay hookup site Grindr probably isn't the greatest role model either/sarc. I say this not to pass opprobrium on the RCC. As I post quite a few things here from RC Saints, there are many things I appreciate about the RCC, but "wokeness and being degenerate isn't just found in Protestant churches .. You seem to have found have a church that has a traditional high liturgy and are happy there. However, there are faithful Christians of various stripes everywhere..

Stuka build keeps motoring along. This morning clamped the cockpit assembly into one side of the fuselage and left for work.

Came home to find that one of the clamps had explosively let go and went flying about half way across the room bowling over many things in its path while tossing the gunner's seat, fire extinguisher, and some ammo cans onto the work bench. Which is why I found the bottle of Tamiya Extra Thin cement laying on its side in my chair and since I had failed to tightly seal it some cement had seeped out.

There is a progressive wing in the RCC-coming out of Germany, interestingly enough that is advocating a change in the canon on gay clergy and so profile figures such as the author priest James Martin seem to be in support of it, so I expect that the RCC might be heading for a schism again soon depending on who the next Pope is, and since quite a few of the Cardinals are progressive we'll see what happens. Not being a RC I have no dog in this fight, but I know a number of conservative RC's who are completely appalled by this-as appalled by Protestants who have left their denominations and joined other ones-ad they're quite vocal in the comments section of Church Militant..

291 Skip: If you're not happy with the N- scale cattle, there are several miniatures companies that sell 15mm oxen or bullocks as draft animals for wagons or artillery limbers- because of that most will be sold together with the limbers or wagons.

Musket Miniatures (not sure if they're still in business) sold them as part of its Mexican-American War range-I bought dozens some years ago for a War in India project. IIRC, Essex (Colonial/Zulu War) and FreiKorps (Mexican American War) also have draft oxen or bullocks, and Irregular Miniatures also sells them individually.

Peter Pig also has 15mm longhorn cattle that might work with some minor surgery in its Western Range and water buffalo in its Vietnam War Range.

Mirliton also has 15mm Oxen available, as did MiniFigs-albeit I'm not sure if the MiniFigs are still available.

All of the above are "true" 15mm, so they might be a bit on the small side.

You might also check 15mm colonial ranges looking for Indian or African draft animals, or 15mm ECW or Renaissance ranges looking for artillery or transport draft animals.
