Former Fed Chair Ben Bernacke: We're Going to See Stagflation For the First Time Since Jimmy Carter's 1970s' Malaise
Goldman Sachs CEO: Recession a "Very, Very High Risk Factor"

Personally, I blame this on Putin's Tax, Ultra-MAGA, White Supremacy, the Supreme Court chilling women's economic opportunities with its Dobbs decision, and Joe Manchin.

Ex-Federal Reserve chair says US economy is heading toward period of stagflation for first time since 1970s: CEO of Goldman Sachs says risk of America falling into a recession 'is very, very high'

Ben Bernake warns that high unemployment and high prices could stay for years

Stagflation last happened in the US in the 70s, when OPEC pushed oil prices up

It led to years of high inflation and low economic growth that may happen again

Average prices are up by 8.3% from last year; Gas is averaging $4.48 a gallon

The CEO of Goldman Sachs and other banks warn that a recession is looming as the Federal Reserve struggles to rein in inflation without triggering a slowdown

By ADAM MANNO FOR DAILYMAIL.COM

The former head of the Federal Reserve says the US is heading toward a period of high inflation and low economic growth as the head of Goldman Sachs and other global banks warn that a recession is coming.

Ben Bernake, who led the Fed through the 2008 financial crisis, says 'stagflation' may be on the horizon.

The term, coined in the 1960s, refers to low economic growth combined with high unemployment and high prices.

The phenomenon was a notable feature of Jimmy Carter's presidency in the 1970s, when the US experienced a 'supply shock' after oil-producing nations raised their prices.

Economists use three variables to measure it: gross domestic product (the market value of all goods and services made in a country) unemployment and inflation (a decrease in the buying power of money.)

Stagflation happens when the first is down and the last two are up.

Meanwhile, the chairman of Goldman Sachs says the risk of the US falling into a recession is 'very, very high.'

...

The economy was officially in recession from 1969 to 1970 and 1973 to 1975, according to Investopedia.

Before that, it was believed that high inflation and high unemployment were not possible at the same time.

But economists now believe that a 'negative supply shock' can cause that. Such a shock happens when a crucial good, such as energy or labor, is suddenly in short supply.

The US underwent a similar shock during the pandemic. Over the last two years, people lost their jobs, goods and services stopped being produced at the same rate and people collected massive unemployment benefits.

Even the gonzo Democrats at Goldman Sachs warn that a recession may be on the horizon:

On Sunday, Goldman Sachs chairman Lloyd Blankfein warned that the US is on its way to a recession.

'If I were running a big company, I would be very prepared for it,' Blankfein said on CBS's Face the Nation, according to the Daily Wire. 'If I was a consumer, I'd be prepared for it.'

Last month, Fannie Mae economists predicted that the country will enter a 'modest recession' next year. Bank of America and Deutsche Bank have also predicted a recession.

On Face the Nation, Blankfein said that a recession was a "very, very high risk factor."

Biden's already begun pre-spinning the coming deep, inflationary recession with a new set of lies:

Hey NeverTrump, when does the Return to Normalcy begin? You know, like you promised?

I repeat: These people are evil. They WANT to see suffering. They want American children starving. The wanted all this and now want to pretend it's not what they wanted so they can continue to attack the stupid Americans who vote for them. No, Joe, you didn't. You inherited an economy badly damaged a year of stupid and destructive COVID policy and one in which the inflation pump was primed thanks to COVID-related helicopter drops of money. That economy - damaged and as ready to inflate as it was - was also growing slowly and employment was starting to rise.

Once you put your shitty hands on it (well, your handlers and politburo did), you continued all of the bad stuff (COVID response, etc.), rolled back all the good stuff (energy, regulation, trade) and then did way more even worse stuff (regulatory, free money, mega spending bills, etc.). This is on you, bro. We'd have had some inflation anyway. We probably wouldn't have 10% inflation with no end in sight along with a severe recession looming in the immediate future.

Obama inherited an economy that he and his liberal pals purposely created (housing crisis, Soros, etc). Purposely destroyed the economy so they could use that as an excuse to push liberal policies to "rebuild" it.

Also, Trump inherited a poor economy and turned it around with economy-boosting policies. Obama could have done the same as Trump back in 2009, but chose to continue the destruction he started with his pals when he was in Senate.

194 OT: I just watched a bit more of the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds premier episode. I guess I'm going to have to take it on its own terms. Apparently it is not going to follow the original continuity. It opens with a scene on Vulcan between adult Spock and his intended, T'Pring, where she asks him to marry her. Spock told us, if you recall, that he and T'Pring had been set to marry since they were 7 years old -- a marriage arranged by their parents.

I need to take this as a wholly new adventure set in an alternate Trek universe, and not a true prequel.

It was a lot harder then. Not everything was just-in-time. We weren't at the bottom of a forty year interest rate repression regime. We weren't directly monetizing the debt for a decade prior. We had robust industry on these shores. The welfare rolls were a lot smaller. We didn't have federalization of everything.

In short, the system back then was much stronger and much more fault-tolerant than it is now. Falling apart this quickly requires all of systemic weakness *and* extremely poor decision making *and* years' worth of accumulating damage.

230 Obama and the TARP bailout was the "beginning of the end". The TARP was almost a trillion in bait and switch bailout ... promised to save underwater homeowners, it decided to give the money to BigBank, and put BigBank in charge of recovery (same guys that fleeced us and screwed things up in the first place).

Then after TARP came the $Trillion a year in QE made up money, with Bernanke lying about it. Obama can brag how he saved the market, but it was Fed intervention and infinite money that propped up what should have been allowed to "correct".

QE never really stopped, except before Trump's midterms in 2018, which hurt Trump, (surprise). Killed the market to help Dems. QE still flowing today afaik.

I would say the US dollar post-Trump is worth 30-40% less so far.

The way they score inflation is a complete joke.

As if a flat screen TV staying the same price that you buy once every 5 years (that counts towards the inflations stats) but a trip to the grocery store every week doubling (doesn't count as core inflation) or filling up your tank once a week costing twice as much (that also doesn't count) is a fair way to score purchasing power for the US consumer.

The man needed an index card with empathic phrases on it when the Sandy Hook and Parkland parents came to visit the WH early in his term, for God's sake. 309 People need to work together to get things they need to live. This is called "the economy." The economy is big. The economy happens when people work together. When people who don't work together still need things, they buy them from other people who work together. They buy them with something called "money." You get money by working or investing or from the government. When some people who work together want to get more money from other people who work together, they raise the price. This higher price means it costs more. When it costs more, it takes more money. When it takes more money to buy things that used to cost less money, we call it "inflation."

Inflation is bad because it is caused by some people who work together demanding more from other people who work together. Sometimes these people are even in a different country like Russia. But until the people who demand more from other people stop demanding more, inflation will always be a problem.

The change I want to see is to have them, and other magazines, completely reject fat models and go with *truly* healthy women. Like, oh, who's that redheaded actress that people often mention here? Karen somebody? Karen Gillan, that's it. Or Margot Robbie. That's my idea of change: Reinstate high standards and emphasize a healthy lifestyle.

Don't try to tell me somebody, male or female, who is clearly overweight is a "healthy weight."

342 I thought inflation was caused by the wealthiest corporations not paying their fair share of taxes. You see, if corporations paid more in taxes, they could lower their prices for consumers. Because higher taxes and more government spending will result in lower prices because.... Taxes taxes taxes fair share fair share fair share wealthiest wealthiest wealthiest....BZZTTZT!!!

At first, I thought FJB saying "they won't let me" was a bit of clowning; I don't think so anymore. The degree of senility in him makes me think these are the equivalent of excited utterances or spontaneous moments of truth. The question left is to discover who comprises this politburo and who sits at the head of its table. Since everything is now transformative, I lean towards somebody who is full of light, hope, and change sits in that seat.

411 Trump walked right into the trap. He had the best economy we ever saw, and he let them crash it and took the blame.

Let's not kid ourselves that Trump's bottomless money well wouldn't have resulted in high inflation too. Not as quickly as Brandon's has because of the shutdown in energy and FUBARing the supply chain. But something that can't go on forever won't even if it's being done by someone you like.

Less so than you'd think, unless you're an expert at tracing fakes, but however many tanks Russia has lost is not my concern. Artillery means more than armor in this war, and even taking the most (ludicrously) optimistic Ukrainian view there is zero reason to believe Russia's artillery has been significantly reduced. Just tell the Ukrainians they have nothing to fear because the guns no longer exist!

Even the American donation to Ukraine had better have American specialists manning them, because it won't take many PGMs to dramatically lower their numbers compared to thinning out the Russian artillery.

The efficiency difference is minuscule. Gas only weighs six pounds per gallon. The difference between 5 gallons and 20 gallons is only 90 pounds, or about 2.6% of 3,500 pound car. The differences in how you take off from red light to red light is going to be important than that.

425 Almost the entire COVID response was a disaster, in every way, that of course was of no benefit. While obviously it's a complicated tale, Trump obviously was at the top and OK'd much of it, especially the outlandish fiscal behavior that was used to "cushion" the shut down. The monetary side of this surely is a major factor in the inflation disaster now occurring.

But Trump's overall economic policies, during his entire term prior to March 2020 and even after in the key areas, were absolutely successful and arguably the best in a generation or more. Even with the damage and inflation from the COVID debacle, the economy would be doing much much better overall if it had been allowed to stay on the Trump course WRT reciprocal trade policies, energy, deregulation. And the "body English" that is a yuuuge part of presidential impact on the economy.

Trump's removal was a calamity in literally every direction one can look. His replacement by the toxic, corrupt, stupid aliens who have come to run the Democrat Party (and who accurately mirror much of the Dem "base") has greatly multiplied the damage.

But the inflation isn't caused by a runaway economy, it's caused by printing too much money and they're not going to stop printing money.
Bad economy, high inflation and high interest rates. This could make the early 80s look like paradise.
And the administration isn't even trying to stop inflation - their only concerned is who to blame it on.

Also unless the gas station is literally on your way to some place you go regularly, it takes gas to drive there, raising your costs.

I had a buddy who would always drive to the cheapest gas station he could find with gas buddy. So he's spend 15m driving somewhere to save $.10/gallon and get 10 gallon - spending a little bit of gas, but more importantly 15m of his time to...save a dollar.

This is true, and the reason for TPMS. Spare tires are heavy. CAFE standards need cars to be light. Getting rid of the spare help a tiny bit. So get rid of it, and put on run-flats. Oops, now the operator won't know if there's a flat, and flats still need to be repaired. So add in TPMS to inform the driver when pressure is lost. Oops, the driver might not maintain it, which will lead to liability. Make it a law that any TPMS system *must* be maintained by the shop when replacing or servicing tires. Then, have the marketing boys put the feature on more cars because it's high-tech and slick, even on cars that *do* have a spare.

And now you have a complicated system full of sensors that must be maintained by law at much greater expense - all because CAFE standards prompted manufacturers to get rid of the spare tire.

490 >>> 481 There's a bit early in the Joe Dante movie Matinee, set in 1963 Florida Keys, where an elementary school teacher pulls presents a chart of good eating. It's meant satirically and shows a bunch of meat.

With the advancement of fatness with the acceptance of eating carbs all the time, the chart works differently now than when the movie was released in the early 90s.

505 The artillery/Russian pontoon bridge incident happened, but Russian personnel losses were extremely unlikely to be anything close to the wild claims made. This has been a systematic error since the start. "Counting rules" attributing a size of X for, say, a BTR crew that use the nominal max/normal crewing level almost certainly are greatly exaggerating the casualty estimates, as many vehicles (and most of the BTGs, the basic Russian operational unit) are known to be manned at well below full levels.

Russian performance has been horrendous, but geography and resources are big inertia elements here and may prevail. And the core Russian goals that remain reachable - security for the two breakaway regions, and Crimea - are not frivolous or some kind of oddball Putin interest, they're broadly supported, and seems unlikely they will be abandoned, however long it takes.

It would be hard to differentiate. If you look at the data you'll see something like;

Heart disease: 696,962
Cancer: 602,350
COVID-19: 350,831

Smoking can cause heart disease or cancer, as can obesity (and COVID deaths too).

Also, you are going to die from something no matter what eventually.

But my memory is that in the last few years the average American life expectancy has gone down...likely part of this is the gains from smoking going down are likely reversed now by the deaths from being overweight.

Obesity is not healthy, and it's not powerful, and it's not sexy. I agree that we shouldn't be berating and shaming fat people for being fat, but we also shouldn't be pretending that obesity is healthy and attractive and good, because it's not.

In fairness, the Minivan killed the station wagon. The SUV killed the minivan, and then the Crossover - which is technically an SUV instead of a tall car with a tailgate - killed the SUV. CAFE helped throughout, since minivans were also originally classified as light trucks, IIRC.

Also came out during questioning today that internally the FBI referred to the white paper Sussmann gave to James Baker as "the DNC paper". They knew all along this was Democrat opposition research.

The Cyber Division said the information was bullshit yet the Counterintelligence Division, Strzok, opened an investigation anyway.

Again, my worry is not about the evidence which is pretty clear. It's about a DC jury which statistically is over 90% Democrat and hard core Democrat.

A bit over half of the total Russian Military is ONE YEAR Conscripts. The other 'half' are Officers, and Professionals. Whole concept if built to fail. US Army Basic training is 22 Weeks... 4 1/2 Months... that's over 1/3 of the Russian conscription time... and that is for basic infantry, not armor. Armor adds another couple of months training on top of that to be effective.

Russian army has been a paper tiger since the Soviet Union fell... which is why this rush to expand NATO makes no sense at all.

642 Russian army has been a paper tiger since the Soviet Union fell... which is why this rush to expand NATO makes no sense at all.

Posted by: Romeo13 at May 17, 2022 04:55 PM

NATO expanded because all of those Countries realized they could rely on the United States to cover the bills for their Armies and defense.

644 This literally means ANY woman can be on the cover.

that sounds sexist and/or transphobic

Well Brucelynn Jenner was womancock of the year for SI I believe so, why not. Frankly I cannot believe the SI suit cover is a big thing anyway. One, it's a magazine and it's devoted mostly to sports and it's all virtue signaling BS anyway. They have a thing called the internet now that you can pretty much look at all kinds of pretty women if you'd like.

645 Like 300 II, Sin City 2 is not good.

However, both have nekkid Eva Green, and that makes them worth viewing.

Mostly, if you've got nothing better to do.

649 634 When Slimfast first came out it was chock full of that sugar substitute that causes your lower intestines to generate cubic miles of gas. First time I tried it I farted for three hours straight.
_____________

Worst diet thing I ever tried was some chips made with the fat substitute, Olestra or whatever it was called. Had a horrible aftertaste that made me want to puke.

I guess that's one way to keep down the calorie count.

It probably is, but Finland shares a LONG border with Russia, and they are legitimately worried.
Russia has invaded them before, and they aren't really up for a repeat performance.
It is interesting in just how BAD the Russian Army has generally performed.
The latest thing I saw (video on YouTube with British analysts and retired military), was the effectiveness of artillery (both sides) and drones, giving the oversight of the battlefield. Ukraine has improvised a very substantial network of drone surveillance (according to the video). I think the talk about anti-armor weapons from the UK and the US is a little over blown, too.

652 I don't remember exactly what happened to quiznos. It was some kind of colossal business mistake that sunk the chain quickly.

It still exists, it's just a much smaller chain now. They lost about half of their locations after the 2008 recession kicked in.

Honest opinion? She's not terrible looking, or at least she wouldn't be in a regular and modest one piece bathing suit. Or preferably just fully clothed. Not every woman can be a bombshell. Plenty of chicks are just pleasantly plump and give the impression they can make a meal to knock your socks off.

Putting Ms. Plump in the stripper's suit is a form of abject humiliation. It's not, "challenging a man's perception of beauty," so much as it is making the audience disgusted while turning the fat chick a cause for derision. It's flat out abuse perpetrated by tiny brained fuckwit who still harbors jealous feelings from high school when all the guys she liked hit on the much prettier girls.

I don't wish to pour scorn on the model. I simply pity her. The editors who push this can get fucked.
