Weekend Hobby, Crafts and Bodging Thread

winstonpainting.jpg

Greetings, gang. Time once again to head for the basement, craft room, studio, shop or wherever you go to get creative or just make a mess and have some fun - just like this old bloke noodling around at the canvas.

First up, the remarkably talented upholsterer Chest'r from Krasnoyarsk in central Siberia is equally adept with wood. Here, he uses an electric chainsaw and a ball cutter in a Dremel/Foredom tool to create a really cool side table out of a tree stump. Has kind of a tribal vibe to it. I like it.

From the very basic we go to the other extreme with what I can only describe as a sculptural luminary/light fixture using an array of machine tools to achieve an elegant, sleek piece. It's also expertly filmed.

Next is an in-depth and excellently filmed tutorial on scratchbuilding an old barn in 1/48th or O scale. Lots of good close ups where you can really see the techniques and materials applied.

Call me weird but there's something curiously compelling about watching a rusty piece of metal getting sandblasted. In any case, here's the guy from Chip Channel working his magic on a rusty old Tonka truck. Nice to have a sandblaster as well as a CNC machine! Still, it takes skills and the results are really nice.

I promised a while back to show some N scale layouts and here is a really fine one up in Canada. This video is a tutorial on making a forest of fir trees, which in N scale can take up a lot of real estate even on a small layout. And this one fills a basement. Check out his channel for more running action and scenery. Really well done.

A British artist potter's process. Some stunning pieces here.

My paintings are representational, in the precisionist category. But I am drawn to some abstract works. I particularly like this woman's techniques and it's inspiring me to take the plunge and try a completely different style.

7 I have news to report regarding remote control small aircraft.
Part of the challenges to enjoyment of such is liability. What if your craft falls out of the sky onto a person or property, or loss of aircraft?
If you are a professional, you incorporate, get an FAA permit, carry liability insurance, maybe even get bonded.
But if you are an amateur, engaged in non-commercial activity, you can join the Academy of Model Aircraft.
Membership is modest and it includes $2,000,000 of liability insurance, but only for recreational activities.

14 Love this thread, JJ. Since I retired a couple of years ago, I've been trying to learn Photoshop the restore my parents old Kodak slides. I don't even know enough to be called a beginner, but it's amazing the results you can get with just a few basic moves. Pictures that looked bad in the 50's can look like they were shot yesterday. Put them up on a 4k TV and it's like going back in time. Next goal....break out the old Lionel trains before Christmas.

I bought the professional version which comes with lifetime updates. The beauty of it is it works with all scanners, even obsolete ones like mine. Great program but a bit of a learning curve. For Photoshop, I have an old version 6.0 on disk that I bought used.

41 All the spinning talk last week reminded me how much I enjoyed that before we moved to Texas with a 5x8 U-Haul and I had to abandon almost everything.

I dug out what I'd managed to keep (5 drop spindles and a wrist distaff). Ordered some merino top, and happily discovered that after 8 years I can still use a drop spindle!

My drafting's gotten a bit irregular, but that will improve with practice, especially after the wheel I ordered yesterday arrives. Thanks to all you spinners for getting me back into a very enjoyable activity.

Do that. I love drawing. Pencils, a pad of good paper, and you're all set. Start with quick studies to learn how she holds her body. I recommend charcoal for that. Nice bold strokes and you can draw her form in mere moments. We did a lot of that in figure drawing, but it certainly works with critters too.

I like the idea of painting, but I just don't have the patience for it (set-up, practice, all of it). I have plenty of other creative outlets.

102 Gormand, we’ve been out to Salt Lake City to the Mormon ancestry records. Free, lots of info, and really got us started.
The numbers do add up fast, especially when you’re working on a specific line. Mrs. Red’s line stops back in the mid 1800s when there was a huge migration of Galicians to the Pennsylvania coal mine areas.
I have lots of clues and the same family names keep popping up (especially using DNA), but I am missing a couple of key connections. Therefore, lots of paths to follow and lots of names.

On my father's side, we have a family history painstakingly done by my uncle ( his father's side)which goes back to the early 1700's. I have at least six ancestors named Israel. He worked on it for nearly 30 years. On my mother's side the family history of her mother ( the Scottish side) was passed down orally, primarily to my mom's oldest sister. My aunt was in the process of writing it down when she was killed by a drunk driver. My mom was six years old when her mother died from appendicitis. Some of my fondest memories are the stories my aunt would tell all of us of their mother's family.

I also have a genetic thread that popped up after my kids and I submitted our swabs to ancestry. I've figured out some of my birth relatives based on DNA match percentages and locale. (I don't respond to the occasional online queries. )

123 My paternal side has a pretty good genealogy, tracing back to Colonial America. My direct ancestor then was actually kidnapped and held for ransom in the West Indies until the clan paid for his release. He eventually arrived in Virginia and homesteaded in the panhandle not far from Wheeling.

No way of getting back to it that we knew of, so my son looked into it. American Indians rarely register. They don't like it. So the closest many people can get is an unexplained Asian strain, meaning people who migrated from Siberia. They're after me to have it done, because I'm the grandparent with the legend, so if I have that, too, it becomes more probable. So far I've resisted.

169 I heartily recommend taking up drawing if you are so inclined. You can always find a drawing tool lying about these days. A pencil. A pen. Whatever.

When I was just a wee lad I spent hours drawing just for the heck of it. Fifty+ years later I'm a retired graphic designer and illustrator (though I still do illustration and art, but mostly for pleasure now). I'm currently getting back into graphite and charcoal drawings. Just finished one of my dog (I posted it on my blog if you're interested).

I love drawing!

You can buy a pad of paper, or just use whatever's lying around as well. Envelopes. Paper sacks. Cardboard. The back of junk mail letters, etc.

You could easily take up the hobby for free. Look around. We're virtually drowning in free art supplies.

190 Fen, baking is very gratifying! I won't say it's easy necessarily, but it's pretty simple.

Pizza crust (for example) can be made almost as quickly as delivery. But it really tastes better if it is allowed a day or two for flavor to develop.

French bread and the like is more involved than Pizza but is very tasty. Everybody should know how to make bread, or at least try it. One of those basic skills

Tending to be OCD, I really got into it for a coupe of years at FamilySearch.org. For two years in-a-row (2018 & 2019) I had clocked something like 15,000 updates each and added well 850 different individuals (not all direct ancestors, as I would go off on tangents either via marriage or when attempting to untangle distinct individuals/families incorrectly merged owing to similar names, places, & dates).

I would work all weekend and frequently late into the evenings. Started referring to the wifey as a "genealogy widow." There was quite a challenge attempting to really discern reality, especially in the face of apparent contradictions -- a la Sherlock Holmes solving a mystery murder. Definitely an adrenaline high and addictive ...

214 I don't use a wheel to ply my spindle spun. I've got three ways. First is to use a Turkish spindle, which creates a center pull ball as you wind on. Second choice is a nostepinne, which also creates a center pull ball. Last is something similar to a nostepinne. Not sure if these are still being made. You wrap two strands together on it, then just spin in the opposite direction to ply. I found out about these from Sarah Swett's blog.

223 Tonight's plan is more model building, mainly get stuff done on the HK Models 1/48 B-17F Flying Fortress. Model builders beware, they dropped the ball on a few things with this $100 kit.

The bombardier and navigator seats are very wrong, the old Monogram B-17G got them right. But it just takes a bit of scrap plastic to make it right. Then add lap belts and done.

I have the first pressing which means things should be good but oddly the forward hatch where flight crew had to pull themselves in is undersized. Either leave the hatch open or shim it out.

The Sperry top turret has a few issues. Namely the gun sight is represented by this block of plastic. Again, just an X-Acto knife and a tiny scrap of plastic will make a new sight. Alas the ammo feed chutes are also missing and there is no room to squeeze them in. The missing bags for the spent brass, unless you are doing a cut-away, is not an issue.

The waist position machine guns need replacing. Eduard makes a set for the kit. Also the ammo boxes for the waist guns are to the aft of the windows and not installed like they are in a G.

224 Braenyard, that sounds exactly the same! I've never looked into it because I have Alice in Wonderland coloring, but I'm the only one in the family to have it. My twin brother (twins run in the family) was not only very dark, but he had little body hair. When he was in VietNam kids would come up to him, trying to pluck the hair on his arms, and marvel that he had none. But I also haven't looked into it because from the family accounts, she was a tough person. She had a white lover, or husband, and when he left her, she tried to kill the children. Only my grandmother and one sibling survived.

Oddly, my grandmother saved her wedding ring and set it aside for me. So that's the ring I wear. Life is strange.

My friend's Dad is a western artist who works with oil. My advice: Don't.

Caveat: Unless you are blessed with an unusual amount of patience. Plus, the learning curve. But, the level of detail you get from oils is impressive. Just be prepared to be on one piece for a while.

Me, I work quickly. Mostly pencil, charcoal, pen and pastel, but I will work in acrylics (which dry quickly).

Do little kids in wheelchairs with HEARING AIDS and vitiligo not get representation? If not, why not?

255 More on the B-17F.

HK in order to save costs actually made the wings and fuselage common between their G and F kits. Which really is not a bad idea since the G was a refinement of the late Douglas built F models.

What do I mean? The last Douglas build F block had the chin turret that epitomized the G models. Starting about B-17F-50-BO, all B-17s had fitted extra tanks in the outer wings for greater range, these were called Tokyo tanks and the easiest way to spot them is the presence of a vent at each wing tip. Also starting in mid-production, an astrodome for navigation was fitted in the nose compartment.

B-17Fs like "Memphis Belle" and "Thumper" are early block Fs. Which means no Tokyo tanks and no astrodome. Luckily for the F model, the astrodome is an option you can add. The Tokyo tanks though are there which means the vents have to be filled in and thought given to erasing the outer wing tank filler caps and not destroy the rivet detail. Fun.

256 Say, didn't someone shoot up a subway car full of people recently? I sort of remember something about that, but it seems like it dropped off of the national radar almost immediately.

257 "Do little kids in wheelchairs with HEARING AIDS and vitiligo not get representation?"

There's a huge potential market for accessories so you can build your own crossdressing wheelchair bound hard of hearing chest feeding Barbie.

259 I'm sitting here in SoCal, 80 degrees on the main channel with a couple of open bottles of wine watching the fit young things in their thong bikinis go by on their paddleboards as I enjoy my supermarket sushi.

What y'all doing today?

260 Any other genealogists in the Horde?

Me! I have so many trees, lol. I will do anybody's family, just for fun. The most interesting line in mine is German, from Mecklenburg. This was my maternal grandmother's family. Her grandparents came over in the 1860s, so they are the "newest" Americans in my family. Using the German records on FamilySearch and Ancestry was really cool. We even found a distant relative that we (me and a cousin) communicated with over there.

My husband's family is hispanic, so Spanish (in Mexico) records were also fun to do. The foreign records (church records) tend to give more info, which is helpful.

261 I would work all weekend and frequently late into the evenings. Started referring to the wifey as a "genealogy widow." There was quite a challenge attempting to really discern reality, especially in the face of apparent contradictions -- a la Sherlock Holmes solving a mystery murder. Definitely an adrenaline high and addictive ...

Agree. That was me! I could not stop! I am on a bit of a break right now, let my membership lapse at Ancestry, but use the library version of My Heritage occasionally.

I'm in SoCal, too, but I washed my car out front with a bucket, sponge and hose! Totally ignored the water shortage, lol. No bikini, so don't ask.
