The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“At that point, we didn’t really understand the fatality rate. You know, we didn’t understand that it’s a disease mainly in the elderly, kind of like flu is, although a bit different than that. So that was pretty scary period, where the world didn’t go on alert, including the United States, nearly as fast as it needed to.” Bill Gates

Go away, don't you have some blue screen death to work on?

Quote II

But here’s the deal — you cannot give in to these people. You cannot give an inch. When they come at you, you have to stand your ground, and I hope that’s what the justices will do.Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO)

*

Quote III

“One of the things that I’ve exprienced,” Maxmin responded, “in my campaigns in rural Maine, is that so many folks just haven’t been talked to by Democratic campaigns or Democratic canvassers, and so there’s this lack of direct experience within the Democratic Party of what rural folks are thinking and feeling. These are my neighbors, they’re the people who raised me, and they deserve a seat at the table in the Democratic Party.” Chloe Maxmin, a Democratic state senator from Maine

Russia vs. Ukraine. Things just keep getting interesting.

Ukraine turns off Europe-bound gas
Kiev cites "force majeure" to halt a third of Russian transited gas flow to Europe, while Gazprom says there have been no issues that would justify the move

Russian gas conglomerate Gazprom has received no confirmation of force majeure or any obstacles to continued transit of gas through a junction in Lugansk Region, the company said on Tuesday, after Ukraine’s operator OGTSU announced it would halt further deliveries starting May 11, due to the presence of “Russian occupiers.”

A small college attacked by ransomware is closing its doors for good.

Lincoln College is scheduled to close its doors Friday, becoming the first U.S. institution of higher learning to shut down in part due to a ransomware attack.

A goodbye note posted to the school’s website said that it survived both World Wars, the Spanish flu and the Great Depression, but was unable to handle the combination of the Covid pandemic and a severe ransomware attack in December that took months to remedy.

“Lincoln College was a victim of a cyberattack in December 2021 that thwarted admissions activities and hindered access to all institutional data, creating an unclear picture of Fall 2022 enrollment projections,” the school wrote in its announcement. “All systems required for recruitment, retention, and fundraising efforts were inoperable. Fortunately, no personal identifying information was exposed. Once fully restored in March 2022, the projections displayed significant enrollment shortfalls, requiring a transformational donation or partnership to sustain Lincoln College beyond the current semester.”

Good work if you can get it.

An estimated $350 million in undisclosed royalties were paid to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and hundreds of its scientists, including the agency’s recently departed director, Dr. Francis Collins, and Dr. Anthony Fauci, according to a nonprofit government watchdog.

“We estimate that up to $350 million in royalties from third parties were paid to NIH scientists during the fiscal years between 2010 and 2020,” Open the Books CEO Adam Andrzejewski told reporters in a telephone news conference on May 9.

“We draw that conclusion because, in the first five years, there has been $134 million that we have been able to quantify of top-line numbers that flowed from third-party payers, meaning pharmaceutical companies or other payers, to NIH scientists.”

Last night I attended a meeting of a non-profit group which I am a member of. We start every meeting with The Pledge of Allegiance.

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America
and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation
under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

Is that really true I thought last evening. Is there really liberty and justice for all?

And Emerald Robinson answers my question, succinctly.

Today, the law only exists in America insofar as it enforces neoliberal orthodoxies. When the law departs from those orthodoxies, it’s completely dismissed by the Left. Our government is good when the Left controls it — and totally illegitimate when the Right controls it. That’s why there’s no middle ground left in American politics. Even Georgetown law professors understand this dynamic and are happy to explain it to you on Twitter.

It's a damn good thing these people were breaking the law instead of voicing their disgust with a school board.

DOJ silent on abortion protests at justices' homes despite federal law prohibiting 'pickets' to influence case
There have been no arrests of abortion activists despite federal law prohibiting protests with intent to influence a court case

I despise the DOJ.

Did the kid want to do it? Or was it a matter of "Pushy Parents"?

Recently a family in Kentucky has found itself in the center of controversy for allowing their 6-year-old son to participate in the Flying Pig Marathon in Cincinnati last Saturday. Many were put off by the idea of a child that young running a distance that long, questioning if it was safe for his health. Before we jump to any conclusions, let’s see what the science says.

To find answers, I first consulted the Physical Activities Guidelines for Americans released by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. According to that guidance, running as an activity is recommended for children ages 6 and up. Not only does the activity help children create an aerobic base, it also serves as a bone-strengthening measure. They recommend an hour per day of exercise for children and adolescents, which can also include a muscle-strengthening activity. Running isn’t the only activity HHS recommends. Other aerobic base activities include jumping rope, swimming, or bicycling. For muscle-strengthening activities, they recommend unstructured activities, such as playing on playground equipment or climbing trees. For bone-strengthening activities, they recommend basketball, tennis, and hopscotch.

You have to fight for your right to be you. I guess.

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot responded to the recent SCOTUS leak suggesting Roe v. Wade will be overturned with a “call to arms” on Monday. “To my friends in the LGBTQ+ community — the Supreme Court is coming for us next. This moment has to be a call to arms,” Lightfoot wrote in a Twitter thread. “We will not surrender our rights without a fight — a fight to victory!”

When I say this I'm looked at as a White Nationalist or something.............

Maybe Chicago's mayor should be fighting to retain business there.

Last October, Boeing’s headquarters in Chicago was described as looking like a ghost town, with few people showing up to work at the company’s corporate offices. And that was largely after the city began reopening following the pandemic lockdowns. Many employees may still have been working from home out of caution over COVID, but others simply didn’t want to brave the streets of the Windy City for fear of being carjacked or otherwise harmed by the criminals who seemed to be running the streets. Now the “ghost town” reputation is apparently going to be amplified because the company announced that it will be escaping Chicago and establishing its HQ in Virginia. And could any sane person really blame them? (National Review)

A new gig for Jordan Peterson. Hope it all works out for him.

Ralston College, which describes itself as a “new institution of higher education dedicated to free inquiry and human flourishing,” said last week that it had appointed Jordan Peterson as chancellor. Peterson, a psychologist and polarizing self-help guru, resigned from his professorship at the University of Toronto earlier this year, citing academe’s “craven” embrace of diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, among other grievances. Ralston, which is located in Georgia, in an announcement called Peterson a “brilliant interpreter of Western culture and a mentor to the millions of students whom the modern university has betrayed.”

The Fabulous Mrs. Mis. Hum. and I have been empty nesters for some time now. They didn't have this kind of shit when our kids were at home.

The Best GPS Trackers and Smartwatches for Kids

Being a parent is a full-time job filled with constant worries. No matter what age your children are, that worry never fades. Thankfully there are some gadgets out there to help alleviate some stresses and worries of being a parent.

While there are smartphones out there with GPS tracking and video call capabilities, they might not be the best option until your children are a little older.

Not your average burglar.

Most thieves have a clear M.O.: Get in, take stuff and get out as quickly and quietly as possible. Every once in a while, you’ll have a criminal with a flair for the destructive, or one who steals weird tokens for the thrill of it, but you won’t often find someone like this man.

That’s because this man, who is loosely being called a “thief” by many, was not behaving like a thief at all. His timing was unusual and his motivation is terribly unclear, and the results have left people scratching their heads.

On April 1 (a curious date to choose, certainly), homeowners in Port Arthur, Texas, were startled when they realized a man had come onto their property, taken their lawnmower, and … mowed their lawn.

Young people were essentially immune, and for most, it was simply a bad cold or flu, generally.

They don't care. The D's generally think that the way to electoral victory is to boost turnout among their base constituencies, while doing everything possible to discourage political participation among rural white people.

That way, you don't have to care about the concerns of rural white people.

165 I'm just barely 29 enough to remember an interview Wozniak gave on TV talking about their new product the iPod. I thought it was kind of neat but would never outpace the USB type players that had recently hit the market. Obviously, I don't make a very good consumer electronics analyst.

Anyway, I still use an MP3 player when traveling but it's not an iPod. Locking myself into their ecosystem just isn't for me, and the standalone Nano's lack of a basic LCD display held me back. They are still a big deal in some other countries so if you like to be oldschool it's worth looking them up on Aliexpress. It's not just cheapass Nano clones (though there are plenty of those), but some quite nice products for 30 to 50 bucks that simply aren't marketed here.

Some years later, a person I knew moved up here and rented one of the erstwhile brothels to live in.

One day she mentioned that she sometimes had "weird people" knocking on her door at all hours. I gently filled her in on the history of her dwelling...

In other Alaska news, we had a soldier killed by a bear on Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson today.

The bears are out, and they're hangry.

240 Lets educate chinese nationals at our top engineering schools. What could go wrong?

Space researcher Yang Fang and her team at DFH Satellite Co., Ltd in Hong Kong published a report in the domestic peer-reviewed journal Spacecraft Engineering that reveals China's People's Liberation Army (PLA) used an AI-powered satellite to detect and "live stream" the USS Harry S. Truman.

A remote sensing satellite, powered by artificial intelligence technology, lurked in low Earth orbit above North America on June 17 of last year and automatically detected the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier off the coast of Long Island, New York. It captured footage of the vessel conducting naval maneuvers, such as adjusting formation and making emergency maneuvers.

341 The rate at which Americans were killed in gun homicides leapt by nearly 35% in 2020 to the highest level in more than 25 years, according to new research by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Amid the pandemic and recession that followed, gun homicide rates grew most among groups that were already at higher risk, researchers found — including people in poor areas, young men, and Black people.

343 One possible explanation for the leap was stressors related to the COVID-19 pandemic, such as "changes and disruptions to services and education, social isolation, economic stressors such as job loss, housing instability and difficulty covering daily expenses," said Thomas Simon, the associate director for science at the CDC's National Center for Injury Prevention and Control.
Deaths by gun have long been linked to economic factors like income inequality, unemployment and housing instability.
"When you look at the pandemic, things like job loss, economic stressors, social isolation — these were already hard hit communities," Houry said.
Even as the number of gun homicides rose dramatically, most deaths caused by guns in the U.S. remained suicides, researchers said.
The rate of suicides using a firearm — about 8 per 100,000 Americans — stayed roughly steady in 2020, a trend that has held for several years.

Next to me was a lovely family that had two chubby twin boys, neatly and identically dressed, exactly like 8 year boys should be dressed, and for extra credit Mom had spiffed up their hair with gel that only a Hispanic mom can do - it is a kind of special magic these mom's have. During the whole concert the twin boys sat politely on the blanket next to mom and tormented each other for entire concert by swapping arm burns, ear lobe tugs, elbows in the ribs and so on without ever causing a single disruption except to their Mom and I. When we made eye contact we both covered our mouths to hide that we were breaking ribs from laughing at these two.

TL;DR: Boys are not girls no matter how hard you try to screw that up.

371 California Rifle & Pistol Association (CRPA) President Chuck Michel Talks About NYSRPA v. Bruen
youtube.com/watch?v=rZwcJ4GU-LI

The Supreme Court of the United States is currently considering the first Second Amendment case since District of Columbia v. Heller was decided more than 14 years ago. Heller is the quintessential case that stated Second Amendment rights are individual rights. Since the decision in Heller, courts in states that are less friendly towards gun rights have worked tirelessly to develop jurisprudence that would view Second Amendment cases through the lens of a lower level of scrutiny than what other fundamental rights are typically viewed under.

The hope in watching the Supreme Court consider New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen is that the high court will finally put an end to the division within the federal circuits and rule that Second Amendment cases deserve the highest level of scrutiny with considering whether the government has the right to infringe upon a fundamental right.

My take is the Uniparty will go right back to doing this no matter what the court rules. A 2nd amendment positive opinion would make it easier to sue them when they pull this crap.

387 The notion that one has to go to prestigious universities to "study constitutional law" for many years is a big part of the mess that we're in.

"We'll tell you what they really meant" etc. The literacy and comprehension back in those days was pretty good, and they wrote in plain language and intended it to be understood by plain people, I expect.

There has been some shift in the precise meaning of certain words or phrases. Interesting that somebody mentions the 2nd Amendment - "Well Regulated" meant something qualitatively different then.

Today it is construed by unscrupulous types to mean heavily regulated (presumably with lots of rules and ... regulations) but what they meant back then was well trained, well functioning.

A me hanical pocket watch that was cleaned and oiled and kept good time within a certain specification, that had been tested by a jeweler to record the number of seconds it gained or lost in a week, was "well regulated". A platoon or company of men that met regularly for close order drill and marching, knew the commands, was inspected and kept their rifles at the ready - THAT is "well regulated."

How to deal with this situation has been in play for a very long time. My understanding is the goal is to put GPS tracking devices in every single car and charge you for every mile you drive in real time. Absolutely nothing to worry about with that program is there?

I was reading about the massive and now expanding lockdowns in China tonight. What is happening is pretty much prison planet land and that got me thinking, using my less than Ivy League mind, about the ramifications. I quickly concluded that we are going to experience widespread shortages of all types of goods. Couple that to complete incompetence in solving the ports of entry issues, the lack of long haul drivers, and sky high diesel prices (that could soon look like bargains of the century) the prudent course of actions is to assume you are basically fucked unless you plan ahead.

434 When I was in grade school, toilet paper rolls were so wide that they covered the entire spindle. It was difficult to keep the plunger depressed while changing the roll. (That's why Mom asked *me* to do it-- smaller fingers.)

Year after year, mfr's shaved fractions of an inch off the width-- the rolls now slide easily side-to-side with more than an inch to spare. Then came the core tube diameter increases.

Probably they'll start packing it like kleenex (or something else) next. Anything to keep up the illusion and/or confuse the consumer.

Our two kittens are now over 1 year old. They've grown into quite the hunters. Chipmunks are now their fascination -- Tamias striatus, the eastern chipmunk, are around here.

They're catching and tormenting them. Miley has declared the screen door will be closed. The damned things have dragged two chipmunks in the house in the past couple of days. No more.

Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at May 11, 2022 04:56 AM (Mzdiz)

In our house, we have a breezeway, the plans called it. Screen door. We had a cat door put in the main door to the kitchen area, that opens to the breezeway.

We've been holding the screen door open, and letting the cats come and go as they please. But they've started dragging the chipmunks in, and letting live ones loose. It has to stop.

Also around here are bumper crops of voles (field mice in the local vernacular). They've brought a few of those live in the house as well.

We have a pair I've been calling Chip and Dale. They are darn cute, but destructive. Last year had one that chewed through an opened (screened) porch window to get at the birdseed we kept on the porch. Little guy chewed through it twice. Braving the cat! We then kept that window closed, and he'd sit on the sill outside, longingly looking in. Did that for about a month before he finally gave up

Oh, one of the chipmunks was very much alive and well. Ran under the stove. We caught it a day later, when it came out.

Miley and I perfected a "mouse catcher' technigue. Plastic microwave dish cover thingy. Drop it over the mouse/chimpmunk/rodent that cats have brought in. Piece of cardboard. Once you've captured the rodent. Slip the carbboard under the catcher. Rodent is now captured and can be transported outside and released.

They are stupid. Cats have caught the same damn rodent again after releasing.
