True Conservative Evan McMullin: I Am a Pro-Life Utahan, Which Is Why I Strongly Oppose The Overruling of Roe V. Wade

Last month, Utah Democrats chose not to nominate an acknowledged Democrat candidate for Senate, choosing instead to endorse the " " " independent " " " candidate Evan McMullin.

In an extraordinary move on Saturday, Utah Democrats voted to back independent candidate Evan McMullin over Democrat Kael Weston to challenge the winner of the Republican primary later this year.

At the Utah Democratic Convention at Cottonwood High School in Murray, McMullin received 782 of the delegates' votes, around 57%, to Weston's 594 votes, preliminary results show.

It's an unprecedented measure for Democrats in a state with an all-Republican congressional delegation.

Evan McMullin was eager to accept his role as unacknoweleged Democrat candidate:

Evan McMullin
@EvanMcMullin

ICYMI -- Over the weekend, Utah Democrats chose not to nominate a candidate and instead, join our cross-partisan coalition.

"Cross-partisan."

He means that in this heavily-Republican state, the Democrats are running a stealth Democrat candidate named Evan McMullin who claims to be an "independent" and who they hope can attract enough liberal former Republicans -- NeverTrumpers -- to beat the actual Republican, Mike Lee.

This is the technique the Democrats and the NeverTrumpers will be using throughout November to put their NeverTrump candidates across in Republican states -- after Liz Cheney loses the Republican primary, she'll announce an "independent" bid and Democrats will support it. Democrats have already announced as much, and Liz Cheney's camp is already talking that up.

Lisa Murkowski is already talking about not running as a Republican candidate but as a "centrist."

And in 2024, of course NeverTrump will launch a major well-financed (by Democrats) "independent" spoiler candidacy to make sure the Democrat beats Trump (or DeSantis -- they hate both, because neither is a liberal neocon).

And of course AllahPundit and the rest of the NeverTrump snowflakes will continue whining that the Republican Party is exxxxcluuuuuding them just because they're joining with the opposing party and running against actual Republican Party candidates.

So Evan McMullin is running as the Democrat in Utah.

But also as the, giggle, "True Conservative." One with "principles." LOL.

So what's he going to say about the leaked Supreme Court opinion overruling Roe v. Wade?

Well what he says is that he's a "Pro-Live Utahan" -- he has Principles and Will Never Retreat from past declarations -- buuuuuut that this ruling will cause divisions and so we shouldn't do that. We should all be united as Patriots for America while we pass "sensible legislation" that protects "women's health" and just support Roe v. Wade in the meantime, as True Conservatives do.

evanmcmullin.jpg

Incredible. Incredible.

And what was Evan McMullin's previous stance on Roe v. Wade, when he was pretending to be the True Conservative alternative to Donald Trump?

Of course, when he was pretending to be More Conservative Than Thou, he was all in favor of overturning Roe v. Wade, and in fact staked that out as a major point of differentiation between himself and Trump. (The man who actually managed to get Roe v. Wade overturned.)

mcmuffinliesonabortion.jpg

I would say my claim that the GOP Establishment's pretense of being "pro-life," and of being "True Conservative," while in fact being pro-abortion and very, very socially liberal is looking more and more solid.

Remember, they said we couldn't vote for Trump because he wasn't really pro-life. I didn't really believe Trump was pro-life myself, but I knew that the GOP Establishment itself wasn't pro-life. They just lie about this to get social conservatives to support their very unpopular agenda of Corporate Service and poorly-conceived and badly-led wars.

So I thought it was just remarkable that people who were obviously pro-abortion down to their very cosmopolitan-liberal cores were accusing Trump of being a pro-choice cosmopolitan liberal.

And then Trump turned out to be pro-life in practice! I don't know if he's really philosophically committed on the issue, but, get this: It doesn't matter. He made promises and he kept them. I don't care if a businessman believes in a contract he signs with me; I just care that he honors the terms of the contract.

And Trump honored his contractual agreements a hell of a lot more than the "True Conservatives" of the GOP Establishment ever did.

Meanwhile, Mollie Hemingway reminds us that Mitt Romney is refusing to endorse sitting Senator Mike Lee, thereby signaling he really supports his fellow liberal NeverTrumper Evan McMullin.

Screenshot (2130).png

A little reminder of the liberal Mitt Romney's own history here: He ran for governor in Massachusetts stating that he fully supported abortion rights and Roe v. Wade. When he ran for President just a few years later, he claimed he'd lied to those Massachusetts yokels and had always been pro-life and against Roe v. Wade. Why, he'd been a stealth "severe conservative" all along, you see!

And yet he, like most of the rest of the pro-choice GOP Establishment, were horrified by Trump's position on abortion. Not that he was actually pro-choice, but that he would actually call their collective bluff and govern as a pro-life president.

And so now this True Conservative -- I mean, Severe Conservative -- is continuing to let Mike Lee dangle as the pro-abortion Democrat Evan McMullin threatens to win the seat.

Your daily reminder that the Conservative, Inc. grifter class was absolutely filled with urban cosmopolitan liberals who just saw conservatives and Republicans as marks for grift:

As I've said a thousand times: It is the fact that 80% of the "elite" of the party's apparatchiks were barely-disguised liberals that explains why no matter how often Republicans "win" elections, we never seem to actually win any policy victories. The GOP Establishment class of liberal gate-keepers makes sure that the conservative agenda can never actually gain any purchase in government or culture.

Democrats have already announced as much, and Liz Cheney's camp is already talking that up."

I believe this is actually a huge admission of the failure of the Democrat Party, as an institution. Candidates are now emerging who think their best shot is just to say "I'm aginst' alla that!" without actually committing to being part of anything. And Dem fundraisers are admitting that their own people have no chance, so they're giving these no-nothings financial support.

But why do they think actual Democrat Party voters (especially black and hispanics) will go to the trouble to show up and vote for these people.? Hot Tip - they won't.

Most people cannot imagine being out of step with their perceived social milieu. Elites have always felt that abortion should be available if one of their yutes has a fling with undesirable mates and to control the underclass. But, they also do not want to be described as facilitating baby killers. So the socially acceptable answer is that I am personally pro life but would not think of imposing my values on others.

Hunter Biden SOUND like a player, but when you realize he has at least one bastard and a toy shoved up his squeakhole then you have some idea of what happens to all these men pulling game well outside their league.

Don't get me wrong, some men naturally attract women. Clinton was actually on the low end of this. Men such as Kissinger, JFK, and Donald Trump. What's interesting is that he not only gave up that life, but forced one of the tarts to pay him damages for falsely claiming otherwise. I haven't seen anything like it.

Even under Wickard, there has to be some substantial nexus to the national economy. Don't think decriminalizing abortion would qualify as a legitimate exercise of federal police powers as a result. See U.S. v. Morrison. The only reason that states have to allow it is that Scotus claimed in Roe that access to abortion was a fundamental freedom protected by the 14th Amendment's due process clause.

First, leftists only use hypocrisy as a cudgel. They have no moral scruples about tossing aside what they believed 60 seconds ago. So, attack them on their only caring about Christian beliefs when it suits their political needs.

Second, you can point out that God has put into place many flawed leaders who did what he wanted. David had someone killed. Other secular kings served as God's tools.

Third, point out that if the rule is Christians can only voted for authentic Christians, fine. Every Dem is toast.

255 One of the biggest lessons I learned after Trump was elected. It doesn't matter if someone *is* pro-life (allegedly), it matters if they will advance the pro-life cause. I don't for one second believe Trump ever really cared about abortion or Roe. His conversion story was comically implausible. And yet...nobody in the history of electoral politics has ever done more to support and advance the pro-life cause. I'll never forget this, and it shouldn't have taken me decades to figure it out. I believed GWB was legitimately pro-life in his beliefs. And yet, like every other Country Club Republican, it was never the right time to actually advance the cause substantially. It was always time for strategic retreat. Lesson learned...finally.

About that. The FDR appointees to the Supreme Court were there to stop Scotus from applying substantive due process to economic decisions. It is notable that one of those appointees, Justice Douglas in a very poorly written opinion in Griswold v. Ct. renewed the doctrine of substantive due process but applied it to social issues instead of economic. That make everything copacetic. Griswold was a shitty decision because until the Planned Parenthood directors found some constable willing to charge them, it was a dead letter law in CT that had never been enforced. Thus, the case was rejected for lack of standing originally.

Wade is overturned. I assume we'll see repeated efforts until there is success and it is slapped down by the supreme court. I assume the dems would also make overruling the overruling a part of their platform. This is a religious tenet for them. It's not going to go away.

Posted by: bear with asymmetrical balls at May 04, 2022 12:46 PM (ppBhU)

290 Even under Wickard, there has to be some substantial nexus to the national economy.
Posted by: whig at May 04, 2022 12:39 PM

True, but don't forget it was...Breyer, iirc...who made a serious argument that possessing a firearm in a school zone, even if it hadn't moved in interstate commerce, was a sufficient nexus, as the poor darlings would be terrified and wouldn't be able to learn well, get good jobs and therefore have an effect on interstate commerce. I'm just saying that they would certainly use a similar (reaching) justification for a national abortion law. And it would be hilarious to watch it bite them in the ass.

320 289 They may rely on the commerce clause, or they may just bill it as civil rights legislation under the 14th amendment. But no matter what, they'll try to legislate at the federal level if Roe v.

They want to try, certainly. But how are they going to get past a binding SCOTUS decision that holds that this is an area reserved to the States, and that the Federal Govm't has no authority to act here?

and that brings up the true significance of this ruling, and why I hope so dearly that it stands. This isn't just about abortion, this is about beginnign to reverse the last 80 years of SCOTUS jurisprudence, which is astounding.

We're lucky that most on the left are too clueless to understand what's starting to happen; the federal level being stripped of power as it is handed back to the States.

So I've made the tactful arguments a thousand times. I've made the can't we just find common ground plea on partial birth abortion or eugenics, or the disparate impact on minorities. I've lived the pro life, but I don't want to make waves, stance for decades, thinking I was better off not being dismissed and maybe convincing one or two people. Or maybe it was just easier.

It's time to go bullhorn for bullhorn with the crazies. We aren't going to get a better chance in our lifetimes to make major gains on this issue.

Once again, civil rights legislation powers under the 14th does not include positive rights like abortion because as the majority describes, it is not a fundamental freedom. The only possibility is that the privileges and immunities clause gets revived but that opens a large can of worms.

The difference is between positive and negative rights. What Congress could do is facilitate traffic by subsidies and ban discrimination/punishment against people that travel for abortions or perhaps make abortion pills via mail order available in states that banned it. The difference is between positive and negative rights.

391 They want to try, certainly. But how are they going to get past a binding SCOTUS decision that holds that this is an area reserved to the States, and that the Federal Govm't has no authority to act here?

I don't think that's what overruling Roe v. Wade can or will say (assuming it happens). If it does, it's nothing but dicta, because it's addressing a prior constitutional court ruling, not federal legislation. Saying the constitution doesn't resolve this issue is not really the same thing as saying that congress has to stay out.

But I also think it's pointless to have any kind of rational conversation about this issue. Roe v. Wade was not rational. It's never been held in high esteem as legal reasoning even by its supporters. Abortion is about who has the votes, whether the issue is before the court, congress, or state legislatures). And because the votes can always change in all these venues and this issue turns on nothing more than politics, it will be with us forever.

As I posited up thread, Mormons tend to be very open-borders and liberal on most issues outside of abortion and gay marriage (at least the many Mormons I've known). same with evangelicals.

I think Beck was against Trump b/c of his stance on immigration. As a convert to Mormonism, as with all converts to a different religion, he is likely more orthodox than those born into the religion. Illegal immigration gives LDS a great opportunity to convert people - and from an outsiders perspective - converting people seems to be one of the biggest and most important tenets of that faith. 425 Let's make this perfectly clear. The leak of the opinion was designed to bring political pressure on the court.

The entire goal of the democrat party with respect to the court is to use the fear of mobs to sway the justices to succumb to their demands, rather than to review the actual law.

This worked in 2020, when fear caused Roberts to not allow the Texas election case to be heard, thus abdicating their constitutional responsibility.

Mob rule is the only weapon the democrats know.

That the election was allowed to be stolen by the court led directly to this leak and to the idea that it is fine to use force to undermine the law.

438 This is the technique the Democrats and the NeverTrumpers will be using throughout November to put their NeverTrump candidates across in Republican states -- after Liz Cheney loses the Republican primary, she'll announce an "independent" bid and Democrats will support it.

Here's the thing. We sit and watch these techniques. And we say they're incredible, horrible, whatever. But why don't we start using them?

ASB, the fedgov by prior precedents does not have and no Scotus has EVER ruled that fedgov has plenary police powers to regulate for the health, safety, and welfare of US citizens. It has to be tied to a federal enumerated power which is std. constitutional law. E.g. commerce clause (but see US v. Morrison), taxing power (Congress could give a tax deduction for abortion but not make a state recognize it), military, etc.

So, like marijuana, Congress can make sure that fedgov does not punish abortion, it could bribe states via money using SD v Dole (most likely) to allow it (but not coerce them under NFIB v. Sebelius), but not legalize it in states where it is banned. That is why removing the 14th Amendment protection as a fundamental freedom in Alito's draft opinion is so important.

479 251 Kind of off topic - but I believe conservatives may have to worry about losing votes once Roe is officially repealed.

A lot of religious conservatives are ONLY conservative on the issues of abortion and gay marriage (and I don't think gay marriage drives very many votes the way abortion does).

Evangelicals and Mormons, for instance, tend to be very liberal on issues like social spending, entitlements, and open borders. They've been voting GOP solely on the issue of abortion for years. Once that issue is mostly removed - I can see a lot of them voting democrat.

Just a thought.

I'm talking about the actual voters. Yes, this election cycle it probably won't happen b/c things are so terrible b/c of Biden.

but in future elections - most evangelicals and Mormons I have known have ONLY been conservative and voted GOP based on abortion. They have been against border security, for amnesty for illegals, for massive social welfare spending, etc.

Don't forget that the 3 legs of Reagan's coalition stool were economic conservatives, cold war hawks, and social conservatives. Social conservatives generally only voted GOP b/c of abortion.

Even if only 25% of social conservatives migrated to the dems, it would be bad for the GOP at election time.

Now, the dems may help us out with this by pushing transgenderism on kids, etc., which would likely keep these religious conservatives in our camp. But I worry that they will leave once abortion is not longer a main issue in federal electoral politics.

It is not the Mormons or evangelists but younger GOP voters that are most stressed by issues like an open border etc. In part because they get cross pressure from their relationships, education, and spend more time on social media.

That is not to say that leadership in evangelicals or Mormons might be more favorably disposed toward more liberal policies but by and large the rank and file are not.

Perhaps, but what about the group that are one-issue voters vis a vis abortion? perhaps they won't migrate toe the dems, but what if they don't show up at all?

While true that the GOPe has been totally dishonest about its stance on abortion - The GOPe still leaned on the abortion issue hard for both fundraising and get-out-the-vote efforts. I doubt they leaned on the issue that hard if it didn't bring money and votes that they otherwise wouldn't get.

My guess is that the U.S. congress will leave abortion to the states. To many "moderate" pols on both sides of the aisle who do not want to cast a vote for or against abortion. when you have the filibuster to use as an excuse - why would either party put it up for a vote?

States will not have that excuse. So, my guess is that the abortion issue gets pretty much forgotten about at the federal level. Not to say there won't be activists on either side pushing for legislation, but my bet is most candidates will ignore it and it will no longer move votes or voters in federal elections b/c everyone will realize the fed gov't isn't going to take a stance.

601 I live in Utah. We've been Republican a long, long time now (which is actually quite remarkable, considering the Republican party was founded to fight the "twin pillars of barbarism." One was slavery. The other? The LDS Church. So the fact we are a Republican state at all is pretty interesting. It shows how disgusting the Democrats are).

We went Republican in the 60s / 70s--Rockefeller years. And for a while we just, like everyone else, drifted along voting for whichever Republican was put in front of us.

Then we got Senator Bob Bennet. And the Tea party happened and we said, as a base, "enough!" And we threw Bennett over the side. That was incredibly shocking to the GOPe. They have HATED Mike Lee, who replaced Bennett, ever since.

The Utah Democrat party, which only exists in Salt Lake City and Park City, has given up on competing against Lee. Six years ago they ran a transgendered grocery bagger clerk--seriously. Total blowout. This time they aren't even nominating a Democrat, though McMullin is practically one.

McMullin is being pushed by the Donors / media types in Utah. He has no actual support, not now. I've gone to one of his speeches... Not good.

Posted by: Rafal Gan Ganowicz at May 04, 2022 02:17 PM (tgIla)

602 Continued....

So we hear a lot about McMullin, because all the local media is in love with him. We used to have a "conservative" and a "Leftist" paper. Trump broke the Conservative paper, and they have been sprinting to the left for the last 5 years, much to their readership's chagrin. Their board is led by a guy named McMullin.. some sort of relative of Evan. And they are McMullin campaign headquarters, practically. So that's why he gets any press. Not because Republican voters want the douchebag, outside of the NeverTrump contingent. Oh yes, the war between the GOPe / Chamber of Commerce types and actual conservatives for control of the Republican party has been especially fierce here in Utah.

It's why we have several squishes like our governor, and yet the Utah Legislature is pretty solidly red (They are not at all shy about overriding the governor's vetoes). It's like Florida legislature with Linsey Graham as a governor. Thankfully we can mostly ignore the Democrat party.
