The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“Certainly if anyone doesn’t feel comfortable with that, they will on their own accord go somewhere else. That’s fine,” Elon Musk

My father would have said, "Don't let the door hit you on the ass on your way out".

*

Quote II

"The Patriarch cannot transform himself into Putin's altar boy." Pope Francis

Phrasing?

*

Quote III

“I mean, look, when you go to comedy clubs, you might hear something that upsets you. You might hear something that offends you. That is the point of going to a comedy club. A good comedian is gonna get close to that line, and maybe trip over it every now and again. But you cannot violently assault anyone, just like if you were at a restaurant, and the guy at the table next to you said an off-color joke or something that you didn’t like, you can’t just punch them.” Dave Rubin

SCOTUS leak, here's the Barney Fife in charge.

"As Marshal, Col. Curley will serve as the Court's chief security officer, facilities administrator, and contracting executive, managing approximately 260 employees, including the Supreme Court Police Force, which provides security for the Justices, Court staff, visitors, the building, and surrounding grounds," the Supreme Court wrote in a press readout before her June 21 appointment.

A check mark investigator. I'm so confident. Just bursting with confidence. What are the odds her first hire is a guy named Moe?

Huh. What does Colorado pot and Joy Behar have in common?

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - A health advisory was issued by the Marijuana Enforcement Division of the Colorado Department of Revenue on Tuesday for medical marijuana from two centers in Colorado Springs.

Alongside the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, the Marijuana Enforcement Division says the “health and safety advisory” is due to “potentially” unsafe levels of total yeast and mold on medical marijuana flower (bud/shake/trim) produced by Canna Meds Wellness Center LLC. The state agencies deemed the levels a “threat to public health and safety.”

Do you enjoy reading Kurt Schlichter as much as I do? He looks at the Ukraine mess and Hollywood.

President Gumby and the same geniuses who thought Kabul was a masterstroke are failing – shocker! – to refill our bunkers and armories. What happens if we find we need to fight a war tomorrow? Well, there’s a chance we run out of key weapons systems. And we might even find ourselves facing our own stuff. That gets our guys dead.

Be careful for what you wish vote for. There once a topless chick from Nantucket..........

NANTUCKET, Mass. (WPRI) — Nantucket is one step closer to making all beaches on the island topless.

There are currently beaches on the island where locals know them as clothing-optional, but residents voted 327-242 Tuesday night to make all beaches topless.

The measure is called “Gender Equality on Beaches” and it reads in part: “In order to promote equality for all persons, any person shall be allowed to be topless on any public or private beach within the town of Nantucket.”

Denial is not a river in Egypt. Or the name of golf course's pond.

On a warm day in September 2009, Jason Hargett, a 35-year-old restaurant manager and father of 4, stepped up to the tee at Red Ledges golf resort in Heber City, Utah.

It was the end of a charity tournament and a big prize was on the line: Anyone who sunk a hole-in-one would win $1m.

Hargett took a swing.

The ball careened 150 yards through the air, plopped onto the green, and slowly rolled back into the hole. Cheers erupted from the small crowd as Hargett sprinted down the fairway in disbelief.

But one entity wasn’t celebrating: the insurance firm that had been hired by the organizers.

***

If you’ve ever watched a golf tournament or charity event, you’ve probably seen some kind of prize (a cash payout, a flashy car, a vacation package) for acing a specified hole.

The chances of this happening for an amateur golfer are minuscule (~1 in 12.5k). But most organizers can’t risk getting stuck with the bill.

Instead, they turn to hole-in-one insurance firms that assume the risk for a small fee.

A brief history of ‘unlucky’ golfers
The hole-in-one insurance business dates back nearly 100 years — but it was originally intended for a different purpose.

The ONT Musical Interlude & Kingsford Charcoal Emporium

On this day: 4 May 1989
Stevie Ray Vaughan set out on what would be his last ever tour at the Orpheum Theatre, Vancouver, British Columbia. The guitarist was killed in a helicopter crash on 27th Aug 1990 after a concert at Alpine Valley Music Theater in Wisconsin, after playing 107 of the 110 dates. via thisdayinmusic.com

Born on this day: 4 May 1937
American rock guitarist Dick Dale, known as 'The King of the Surf Guitar'. He pioneered and created what many call the surf music style. Dale worked closely with Fender to produce custom made amplifiers, including the first-ever 100-watt guitar amplifier. His song 'Misirlou' featured over the opening credits to Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction. Dale died of heart failure on 16 March 2019, at the age of 81. via thisdayinmusic.com

O this day: 4 May 1987
American blues vocalist, harmonica player Paul Butterfield, who fronted The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, died at his home in North Hollywood, California, of drug-related heart failure, he was 44. Gained international recognition, as one of the early acts performing during the Summer of Love, at Monterey Pop Festival and Woodstock festival. via thisdayinmusic.com

Funny how all of these events tie into today.

If true this is pretty cool. Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

Scientists used machine learning to discover what they say could be a new way to speed up the process of breaking down plastic significantly, Vice reports.

As detailed in a new paper published in the journal Nature, a research team from the University of Texas at Austin modified an enzyme to break down the individual components of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), a commonly used plastic that makes up a staggering 12 percent of global waste.

Impressively, the modified enzyme also reduced the amount of time it takes for the plastic to degrade from months to a just single week.

135 I burned a bridge today. One of my former students waxed eloquent about pro-life not being "about babies" because if they really were, they would pay for all medical costs, pay for the parents to stay home indefinitely, free lactation lessons, free formula, free diapers, etc.

It struck me as an extortionist's list: Give me what I want, or the kid gets it.

So I told him it was a garbage take. Does someone's every need have to be covered to not kill one's child? There is free birth control in many places and one can even get funding for medical sterilization. Just this week, a couple was charged with killing their daughter through neglect. Should their defense be that they didn't have free medical care? Subsidized income so they could both stay home? Really, what's the checklist that must be met?

I HATE that so many young people must be bribed to do the right thing or, at the very least, refrain from moral evil.

I think a lot of people look at the 2% or whatever of the population that really, truly struggles to have children and just assumes that's how it works for everyone. 253 As the dark night of fascism descends on much of the United States, a mildly prominent Leftist in Portland predicts profound demographic changes:

with this week's terrible news there's been a lot of twitter chatter about whether christofascism in red states leaves blue cities/states with responsibilities to be more welcoming to red state refugees. it seems to me what that looks like is nuanced but answer is obviously yes

it's the most vulnerable of the red states who are least responsible for all this and they'll going to need the most help escaping not only christofascism but also, you know, rising oceans and wildfires. this is not abstract, this is within the next decade. it's already happening

it's an argument for zoning reform, sure, but also an argument for all of the housing affordability policies (tenant support, etc) as well as significantly expanding a social safety net, too, with new funding for a litany of social programs for the soon-to-be arrivals.

This guy really has his finger on the pulse of recent demographic shifts in the United States. /s

Subway is acceptable when on a road trip and you stop for gas in a small town what doesn't even have a McDonald's.

302 Which is why I suggested a tank. Sufficiently heavy, that I doubt a tornado could loft it into the air. Maybe could roll it over? Looking at photos of tornado damage, it seems that structures or vehicles with lots of surface area vs mass are the worst hit.

322 Was reading about the Shroud of Turin today. Blew my mind, and now I'm convinced it is exactly what Christians believe it is, Christ's burial shroud.

Apparently the blood/fluids are real and were deposited on the shroud first.

The image of the man is on both sides of the shroud, i.e., on the surface that was touching the body, as well as the opposite side. However, the image does not permeate the material. It's just on the two surfaces.

The only theory that even gets close to explaining this is that the body became instantly perfectly transparent to its physical surroundings as a blast of vacuum ultraviolet light occurred, so the shroud slowly floated down flat as the image was imprinted first on the inside and then on the outside. Hard to explain properly. Here's an article by the dude who postulates this, John P. Jackson:

Portland's county lost 12,000 people July 2020 - June 2021.

A key part of the Leftist world-view in Portland is that "everyone wants to live here". They believe this despite that fact that Oregon has been one of the slower-growing Western states for decades, and the fact that Boise, the anti-Portland, has been growing much faster than Portland for years.

377 Jason's Deli also is, or used to be, good. I haven't been there in years.

My problem is I don't like condiments or most "extra" ingredients, so my sandwiches are typically meat, cheese, and bread. Most sandwich shops rely on their extra shit to make the sandwich good, so their meat and bread aren't particularly good, and they often don't have more than two choices for cheese. So I'm much better off buying my own favorite bread (Kroger has a rosemary olive oil loaf that is DELICIOUS), cooking some chicken with my own preferred flavors, and getting my own cheese in whatever flavor I want that week (usually a sharp cheddar but sometimes I like to go with provolone). (making my own sandwiches is cheaper too)

379 I never use the free Wi-Fi unless I can't get a cell signal. I pay for unlimited data for a reason... mainly because of 3 kids but you get my point...

Is that a real "unlimited" data or is it "Unlimited"™ as in branding not descriptive of the actual service?

With AT&T, the "Unlimited" was limited to about 10GB/mo of hot spot, then it was upgraded to "Unlimited Plus" to something like 15GB before it was restricted to dial-up speeds. Now they have "Elite" which provides 40GB/mo per line.

So I checked out T-Mobile, spotty service in ETX whereas Verizon and AT&T have strong coverage, with AT&T having the most 5G coverage. But T-Mobile is true Unlimited and with a discount for those 29+ is literally half the price of AT&T.

Verizon is run by Satan, and AT&T is run by Be'ezlebub so I'm dealing with Devil in any case.

The current attempts to override the programming aren't conducive to cooperation or propagation of the species...

432 God created man and all other life on earth. There's not a word in Scripture as to *how*.

I think it makes perfect sense that the world up to the "quickening" of mankind was 100% under the Lord's direct control, atom by atom. But then, when the time was right, a single primate with the right characteristics was selected to be Adam, the first man, able to control aspects of the universe through intent and will borne of a soul and reasoning. God gifted this creature the ability to make the universe do things against the immediate direct will of Himself. And simultaneously cursed his creature with the duty to live with all the consequences of its actions in this new, broken, now less than Godly universe. "In His image" doesn't mean that God looks like a hairless monkey. It means that man is a being that can alter God's universe according to his own will, at least to some degree.

Many have wondered why there are so many pictures of destroyed T-72's where the turret has been blown off and is left sitting next to the rest of the tank; it's because the T-72 doesn't carry it's ammunition in a separate armored compartment like most tanks, but rather all of it is in a carousel loader underneath the turret, and the crew. If an anti-tank round hits at the right spot, all of the tanks ammo goes off together and pop goes the weasel.

Around 8:00 o'clock, there was a fifth one and I was pissed. So I picked it up and barked, "Who the fuck is this?" Heard a recorded message, "Please take a few minutes to answer this voter survey . . ." I immediately hung up. 452 In 1997, I transferred from Signal Corps to JAG and eventually left the service in 2000 because, well, my JAG unit was a mess (not the fault of the JAG unit, there being a total of 3 officers and no enlisted, which was NOT the TOandE). I was tired of spending my personal work time during the week to get JAG work done (because I was the only person below 0-5 in the unit), the division Shields of Shame refused to help, and given that it took 8 years to make captain while I was in an 0-3 billet for 3 of those years, I didn't feel like waiting a decade to make major. So I got my H.D. If I'd stayed signal, I might have remained in. Then 9/11 would've hit.

453 God created the Universe, and all the laws by which it operates. Why could he not create the rules of the universe... including evolution... to end up with our creation? Belief in one, does not really make belief in the other, illogical... if you believe that God is both all powerful, AND all knowing.

The slight hitch in that theory is that God told us exactly how long it took and exactly what order. And just in case one wanted to turn the clear words into a muddled "millions of years" / "framework theory" or a myriad of other attempts to appease the scoffers, God made sure, twice, that the six day Creation would be embedded in the Ten Commandments. "...for in six days God made the heavens and earth and rested on the seventh...

That doesn't get us any closer, either. What is an evening or a morning or a natural day if there's no sun? What is *any* interval of time in a universe where the rules of what time and space even *are* may not have settled down yet? It makes far more sense that these words are describing some physical processes that we simply don't understand fully yet. Heck, with what we know about the squidgyness of spacetime, the entire 14 billion years of universal history up to the dawn of man may indeed be chronologically equal to seven calendar days in our proper time right now...It's not "muddled" because Godless heathens like me seek to understand the sandbox that was made for us in terms of the instruction manual that was given to us. It's muddled because they had to describe something as incomprehensible as the creation of Everything in a language that has no words for the processes involved. The Face of God is everywhere evident in His creation, however it was done.

Cawthorn was elected by a fluke. His district was formerly represented by Mark Meadows, who would become Trump's chief of staff. Meadows delayed the announcement of his not running for re-election until past the deadline for incumbent state GOP pols to file to run for his seat. The local scuttlebutt was that he did that so a friend of his wife's could file for the seat without experienced competition. The annoyance with the ploy ensured her defeat by Cawthorn in the primary. The district is usually won by the GOP, so Cawthorn won the general. He has proved...disappointing.

I read the article, and was pleasantly surprised to see that the "new enzyme" worked to depolymerize the plastic into it original constituents that could be reused to make new "virgin" plastic.

So they have acknowledged that plastic is useful, and are working on a recycling scheme that results in making the trash into useful plastic again, instead of overpriced plastic parking lot curbs and other such junk.

499 Another line of thought i wrestle with.... nobody has more respect for God's creation than God Himself. Suppose that man was created ex-nihilo, one human adult man, all trillion-odd atoms of him, just blinked into existence instantaneously. The air fiction and heating from the instantaneous displacement from all that mass suddenly being where it wasn't before would probably kill him. So there would have to be some kind of divine kludge to shove all that air out of the way first. And the Lord doesn't do kludges with his beautiful creation. He doesn't ever seem to completely violate his own physical laws that he so lovingly crafted and balanced for this sandbox. All of the miracles in scripture are based on actual physical processes with either a twist or a shortcut, not absurd implausible nonsense like you see in apocryphal gospels or some of the more creative world religions. It's just a somewhat oblique argument in favor of a "quickening" moment in an already existing human-but-not-human mammal created by a long, long process. Souls don't displace much matter, i would imagine.

I spent the last hour going down the bloody trail of Judges 19-21 (because of a Wikipedia reference!) and God was clearly, ahem, shaking His head at the idiots. (It's the story of the Levite's concubine and the civil war against the tribe of Benjamin, and the rash promises made in the aftermath. Oh, and kidnapping wives a la Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.)

Well, a degree of latitude is about 69 miles, as is a degree of longitude, at the Equator. As you go further North, the degrees of latitude remain the same, by definition, but degrees of longitude (and hence minutes) become smaller. Seems to me the length of a degree of longitude would be 69 times the cosine of the latitude.

Women know this and revel in such exposure and power given to them, ugly and all. In other circumstances where actual beauty, not the dollar sign and not testosterone, is king, they know they will be totally ignored.

I have a vexxing problem. A cartridge type oil filter on an old tractor, a Ford 8700 ('76 model, still running fine) is leaking.

It's doozy. It doesn't leak under pressure. However, let it cool down, and it starts seeping oil and overnight will drain the filter. I just discovered this when I cranked it up.

I took the filter off, gasket seemed fine, put it back on, spun the can around a little, tightened it as tight as I dared. Same problem.

I eyeballed it starting to leak. Got a strong work light, and watched it after I turned off the engine. Took about 10 minutes, but sure enough, it started seeping oil. Crank it back up, and it stops. Turn it off, cool down, and it starts.

I'm going to take if off tomorrow and check the gasket. Got a new filter assembly with gaskets and I'm gonna replace the main gasket.

My Mom was my instructor when I learned to drive; it was a '70 VW Squareback. On Sundays, thanks to Blue Laws, we would go to a nearby empty parking lot which gave me plenty of room to practice. Took the DMV road test with that car, too; had no problem with the stick and parallel parking. Didn't want my Dad as an instructor as he was a horrible driver; whatever he might have taught me I would have had to do the opposite. Drove it for about seven years, literally into the ground; the back seat floorboard rusted out. Before I got to drive it, it was my Dad's work car (paid for mileage) and was T-boned. Estimate was $1,350 damage while the Blue Book was $1,400, so it got repaired. Always drove a little crooked as the frame was slightly bent. But I loved that VW Squareback. Yeah, you can't beat a stick.

My offense: driving one handed on the wheel, and cutting corners on left turn. I'd been driving shit around the farm for years, and even drove trucks on the road, for a mile or so. He came over with a tandem axle Ford. Big 'un. 13 speed Roadranger, or 15 speed, or someshit. I figured that fucker out in a field. I drove it all around, over the roads here, range of about 5 miles. I was changing gears without the clutch, as you can do and shit like that.

It has changed with all this federal commercial license shit, but back when I was young, a class 1 license was good for vehicle up to about 24,000 lbs GVW or something like that.

A single vehicle over that required a Class 2. A Class 3 was required for trailers. You know semis and stuff. There are, and still are some exceptions for farm trucks, don't ask me what it is today.

Anyway, a local character around here, first name "Jerry" was a hoot. He sounded like a hick from the sticks, shore 'nuff. He was, but he had a lot of "country smarts".

That fucker got his Class 3 license using a wrecker pulling his own pickup truck. He borrowed his uncle's wrecker, hooked up his own pick up, and took the Class 3 driving test. He passed.

Back then, under SC law, that counted.

Ol' Jerry, I'm remembering. One time, my father hired him to drive some our trucks to the elevator. I was a teenager then, and a friend of mine was helping out, driving tractors with me and shit.

We got to talking with ol' Jerry about the 2-speed axles. I remarked how an old International Loadstar 1600 we had was tricky about the 2-speed axle shifting.

Ol' Jerry said, and I wish I could convey his accent and pronunciation, "Well, boys, I tell ya'. All you got to do is don't let ya' wheels a-git ahead of ya' motor, and you'll do alright!"

ABC's "Battle of the Network Stars" is to blame for the remainder of the nic.

682 Bill, they just extended our flood warning till 0600. Still raining. More on the way. Okmulgee and Okfuskee (and isn't it fun to hear the storm chasers trying to pronounce those?...you shoulda heard what they did to Okemah) are drowning. Well, I mean what's left after the tornadoes is drowning.

684 The nic comes from two gentlemen -- scientists -- associated with cycles named after them. Krebs' is the citric acid cycle or the tricarboxylic acid cycle, is one of the most important reaction sequences in biochemistry. Carnot's is a theoretical ideal thermodynamic cycle.

687 682 Heh. We have a Tulsa channel on our cable menu, and even the locals on their news mangle some of those Okie names. The weather channel mangles them so badly you think they're making up names.
