White House press secretary Jen Psaki insisted Friday that what Biden administration’s Homeland Security secretary said last week was a new effort from his agency was in fact a continuation of Trump-era efforts.
Last week, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas revealed the existence of the Disinformation Governance Board with no references to the Trump administration, according to The Washington Post.
“We have just established a mis- and disinformation governance board in the Department of Homeland Security to more effectively combat this threat, not only to election security but to our homeland security,” he said.

The discussions about student loan forgiveness are still running hot. Given modern reality, it should be possible to understand why so many who have outstanding student debt think it should be erased. Too much debt in society is wiped away, mostly for the better situated, either through explicit forgiveness, mechanisms to reduce the pain, or convenient forgetfulness.
As an example, Mediaite yesterday ran a piece about a Fox FOXA -1.9% cohost who once ran for the Senate in New York. The headline: “Jeanine Pirro, Whose Campaign Owed $600,000 in Unpaid Bills for More Than a Decade, Demands Student Borrowers Pay Their Bills.”
Brutal but not completely accurate. Going to the Federal Election Commission’s page for her campaign and dropping down to the cash summary, ending cash on hand for her committee was $6,857. Debts or loans (and there was only one loan for $265,000 from the candidate herself) listed as still owed: $854,194. Worse than the story suggested. Perhaps her advice would come across more effectively if she had paid off what she owed.

I don't have all the answers but I would start here:

Private colleges with substantial trusts should have some skin in the game if they accept student loan payments.

Let the Harvard's and Yale's piss and moan.

High schools should be pushing vocational school degrees. There is money to be made learning a trade. I have more need for a LPN or welder than I do a Woman's Study major.

There are plenty of professions which require a Bachelor's or a Master's degree that in my opinion do not require that advanced of a degree.

But after a journey of more than 700 miles, the thieves were unable to use any of the equipment -- because it had been locked remotely.
Over the past few weeks there's been a growing number of reports of Russian troops stealing farm equipment, grain and even building materials - beyond widespread looting of residences. But the removal of valuable agricultural equipment from a John Deere dealership in Melitopol speaks to an increasingly organized operation, one that even uses Russian military transport as part of the heist.
CNN has learned that the equipment was removed from an Agrotek dealership in Melitopol, which has been occupied by Russian forces since early March. Altogether it's valued at nearly $5 million. The combine harvesters alone are worth $300,000 each.

The man - seen by witnesses with a large variety of meat - , was spotted trying to sell items on Lincoln Boulevard, off Cromwell Road in Grimsby. At the time, Humberside Police were at the scene of a major investigation where a man was arrested following a 12 hour roof top standoff.
Following the carnage caused by tiles and bricks being thrown down on to the street, police sealed off the area and a cordon was put in place until the situation was brought under control. Today, it remained in place whilst Crime Scene Investigators collected evidence from the scene.

The most relevant one for all of the loan forgiveness thing is the loan nationalizations in 2009 that nearly everyone who wasn't a recent graduate, or about to graduate then, doesn't seem to know about.

"You borrowed the money, pay it back per the contract" went right out the window as soon as Obama tore up the contracts and handed the debts to cronies. The resulting messes and now the infighting was intentional.

It's not about people picking dumb degrees any more than face masks were about science or disease prevention.

So there's a youtube guy named Trent Palmer that had his pilot license revoked. He's appealing it though. The story is, he is a bush pilot and had a friend with a grass strip, out in the middle of the brush ask him to come over to land there. Well he flew over, did some inspection runs and decided that he couldn't identify a safe place to touch down with enough room to roll out so he flew back home.

Shortly after he got a call from a ntsb/faa agent saying we would like to talk to you. Well turns out a distant neighbor of the guy with the strip didn't like that, and decided to complain. Trent claimed he followed the FAA rules for inspecting a potential landing spot. The FAA said it doesn't matter and the civil judge rulled against him. People are saying this could end being a bush pilot. And it looks like Trent was right so why did the judge and the FAA rule this way. Well that's related to 3 other things. (cont.)

First thing: There's a guy named Trevor Jacob who's some low placed olympic guy who became a youtube personality and a pilot. In one video he goes up, he said to spread a friend's ashes over some mountain. Well oh no! his engine quits but he handily had a parachute right on him, because you know all pilots just happen to have a parachute packed and ready and a selfi stick and videoed himself jumping out of his plane. He then lands, goes to his crashed aircraft, and removes some recording devices and stuff. His video got a lot of hits.

Well the FAA looked at the videos, especially the parts that were edited out, looked at the condition of the crashed aircraft and included that he did it all as a stunt. He violated regulations against endangerment of life and structure, which are pretty big regs and he had an emergence revocation, meaning you have hours to report to a representative and hand over your license so you can't fly anymore. I was at Pearland Shooting Center, appx 2005, and the guys in the next pistol bay down were USDA swatties. I kept my distance, wrapped up my gear, and departed. Seeing the blue windbreakers with "USDA" across the back shoulders, I didn't know exactly what, but certainly sensed that something was wrong in Denmark.

Counterfeiting increases the volume of money in circulation without increasing the value in the world that it represents. Counterfeiting reduces the value in everyone's holdings and is a form of theft.
It is a crime when the individual does it, but it is morally wrong when anyone, including the Central banks, does it.

If the world's value is represented by a pocket full of dryer lint that is in your pocket, then you have a valuable pocket full of lint.
If your brother dries his clothes and winds up with the same amount of dryer lint, then your pocket is half as valuable as his, unless you can show that his is not valid or counterfeit. Barring that, he reduced by half your holding value by washing and drying his stupid skinny hipster jeans.

So a couple pilots, red bull, and hulu somehow come up with an idea for a stunt called Plane Swap. Yes, it is what you think. Basically, there's this stunt that you may have seen, it's been done at least once, where you fly two planes up, put them in a controlled dive at roughly the same descent velocity as a human parachutists terminal velocity and one guy jumps out of one descending plane and maneuvers through the air over to dive into the other descending plane.

So Plane Swap is exactly stupid as you have guessed. Two pilots fly planes up then put them into a controlled descending dive then they both jump out of their planes cross and dive into the other plane. Well, they went up recently to perform this stunt and were 50% successful. One guy got in but the other didn't make it and just parachuted down instead. The unpiloted plane became a lawn dart. Well turns out they didn't get FAA permission. They actually very specifically told them "nope". And the proper permissions and documents none of that were done. So the FAA is going to come down real damn hard on everyone involved. Again YouTubers making the FAA very uncomfortable. (cont)

There's a large Amish community nearby, and both local government and the Amish people go out of their way to maintain good relations with each other. Nobody tries to collect sales taxes on the produce that people sell from their front porches, for example. If an Amish teenager commits some minor offense, law enforcement will sometimes just let the Bishop handle it.

This has always seemed pretty enlightened to me.

To recap some of the thoughtful posts above; in an honest, properly managed system it's immoral because you are taking some value away from everyone, by diminishing the value of everyone's money by surreptitiously inflating the money supply.

However, in a system where the government is pumping out billions of new dollars every day just to pay off it's political allies, then no counterfeiter is capable of producing enough to even be measured. So, it becomes a victimless crime where the only worry is not getting caught.

Re counterfeiting. There are some very interesting and complex court cases over the years involving what is "money" and what the US govt can say and do about it.

This is gets complex, but coin and paper money (that Federal Reserve creates and destroys) are two very different things legally. Coin is, always was and always must be direct Treasury currency (things like the old Old US Note, which are still legal tender and a small amount is still out there are also direct Treasury currency).

Here's the funny thing. The courts have ruled that created coin of any kind, anything you might create that would be considered coin is illegal, and only the US govt can do that.

Now, paper money. We are all free to create our paper money. Call it scrip. We could create Horde bucks to our heart's content and trade with it. No problem.

However, if we try to put something on it that implies it is somehow US govt. authorized paper money, then we're in trouble with the law.

I just got interested an looked it up. The amount of direct Treasury currency outstanding is only $51B, which is a tiny fraction of the total money supply. This includes all coin, plus the tiny amount of US notes and some others still in circulation (probably being held in private hands as collectors' items).

This includes some gold and silver notes still out there. They are no longer redeemable, but they are still legal tender, and considered direct Treasury currency.

The Federal Reserve holds about $1.3B in coin on its balance sheet. It is an asset. This is how the Fed puts coin in the banking system primarily, handling bank demand (there are others way to put coin in the system, however).

Fed orders so much coin from the Treasury. It takes it, puts it on its asset side, then creates the nominal value in digi-dollars in the US Treasury's "checking account" at the Fed.

When banks need coin from the Fed, the Fed gives them the coin to put in their vault and debits that banks own digi-reserve account at the Fed. Or they could pay it with vault physical cash.

Update: 25-28 August 2022, Las Vegas.

I have tentatively scheduled to be there. Last year, it was just Hat and me. This time ...? Additionally, the Star Trek 56-Year Mission convention is at Bally’s Las Vegas, on The Strip, so I will be there most of the time. Right now, hotel rates on Travelocity look to be cheap; lots of ~$50/night listings.

Do yourself a favor and eat lots of fruit, active yogurt, and vegetable fiber and try a course of probiotics for a while after you go off the antibiotics. It won't hurt and it might help.
I am doing floristor and a Lactobacillus combo that includes L. Reuteri because of lingering gut issues that I think came from a course of Zpac a couple years ago.

With fractional reserve lending, they create more IOUs than cash to cover. That practice has been going on for a long time, of course, way back into the first banking systems created.

When you do withdraw physical cash, then they have to cover it with physical cash.

Russia is just saying that if it's okay to fire NATO missiles (even if it's "Ukraine" doing the firing) into Russia to hurt their supply lines, then it's okay for Russia to shot missiles into the countries where Ukraine's supplies are coming from, but with their usual subtlety.

He was able to skirt around counterfeiting laws, because he never tried to pass them as US currency. He'd eat at a diner or something, and then show the waitress his "artwork" and see if she would accept it in lieu of genuine US currency. Sometimes it worked. I was just looking up some info re scrip. In 1938, federal law made it illegal to pay wages in scrip. That is still on the books, and was upheld. Scrip is legal, but you couldn't pay wages in it.

And yep, making any kind of "coin" is flat-out illegal. I mean anything, basically. Now, how do these places that uses "tokens" (theme parks, I remember, and others) get around the law? Well, it's somehow they they're not being used or considered "coin money".

Great when you've got the 1 oz Credit Swisse, but not so much when you have the .1 oz cut off of that ingot on your end of the deal. Now, you've got to weigh and chemically assay that sliver, to prove that what you claim to have is what you have.

Smaller, daily transactions, junk silver is king. As are other readily I.D.'d versions of silver ingots, ranging from 1 oz to 5 or 10 oz, to 100 oz. bars.

There was a Twilight Zone episode, too lazy to look up the title. Anyway, Claude Akins and two others were some thieves. They stole a bunch of gold. One of them was some mad scientist who came up with a suspended animation gas.

Their plan was to hide out in a cave, and sleep for 100 years, suspended, and them emerge long after, and thus be very rich men.

Or maybe it was four thieves. One of them died, when his pod leaked. The other emerged, but ended walking through the desert and killing each other. Claude Akins was the lone survivor, but died of thirst, just as some one came up in floating car.

He offered them a gold bar to rescue him, then croaked. The future people couldn't believe it. Why did he think gold was so valuable? Turns out that years ago, cheap transmutation became available, and gold could be made out of lead for cheap.

I've always heard it put that gold is not so much and inflation hedge (look at the real price of gold fluctuations over the years, in terms of various baskets of goods), but a shit hit the fan hedge.

When societies go haywire, govts collapse, economies collapse, etc, the shit hits the fan, then gold is indeed king. In these times, you don't think of return on investment, or even maintaining constant wealth. It's preserving some fraction of what you have. You hope that fraction will be as close to unity as possible, but that's not guaranteed.

I read an article a few weeks ago. Some one had framed this whole money thing in an interesting way. There are two kinds of money, effectively, which he dubbed "inside money" and "outside money". Sort of an odd sounding way to put it, at first, but it makes good sense.

Inside and outside were relative to the "System", the current (corrupt) system of global finance and economic activity. Inside money is things that are within that system, that exist only inside it, and have no value without it.

Outside money is shit outside that system that doesn't depend on it. Gold is outside money. Dollar is inside.

Roughly, outside money are stuff that is not a liability on anyone's balance sheet. Inside money is always someone's liability. Outside money is always an asset, never a liability.

Hmm, interesting question. The idea that the totality of a thing increases it's overall value. I'd say that is true. Although a Bugatti Veryon's tire is like 20k. I'd say the carbon fiber bits and bobs are worth a pretty penny as well. On the other hand, I'd say the thing assembled is worth more than it's constituent parts.

As it turns out, gold hits all of the criteria. And chicks dig it, too. It is almost useless in any practical sense, ironically enough.

Now, in that inside vs outside money thing, he was arguing that bitcoin and crypto should be outside money. I don't agree. It's very much "inside" in the sense that to work with it, you need the system of the internet, computing power, etc, etc.

The concept however, can have merit. I don't know if this is possible. Imagine a concept of a "token", something like a bitcoin, some unit, that can be determined by physical processes. The laws of physics define some process by which some such token can be defined. That is all observes in the universe can do "basic physics experiments" and determine these tokens, and some unique identifier thereof.

If that were possible, you'd have something. Something that could serve as "money" and be independent of a system.

I don't know if that is possible and would bet against it. Even if some such "token" could be defined, dealing with it would require a level of technology of measurement and such that, well, wouldn't be available to a caveman, or even a modern stranded on the proverbial desert island.

The biggest I am thinking of came due during Diocleatian, who essentially had to scrap everything and go to a barter system (and other things) that essentially set everything up for a 1000 years of feudalism. He tried to fix the existing system without taking the worthless coins out of circulation, and that kind of doomed the currency side of things.

Constantine essentially restored currency stability by instituting the Solidus for gold coinage. I have seen arguments that this only solidified the wealth of the rich, but I find that less persuasive than the further entrenchment of the feudal, top down management of everything started by Diocletian.

Consider the physical units, the dimensions of time, length, mass, etc. They have objective physical meaning. Now, we can define them arbitrarily. The unit of time is this. The unit of length is this here thing, and the unit of mass is this here.

That's the way we've done it. However, we don't have to. We can let the laws of physics determine them. That is hard, however, as you need very precise measuring equipment and expertise to do it.

We are slowly moving toward the ideal. With arbitrary units, we have physical constants that have to be determined by measurement. When our measurements get to be precise enough, we can simply *define* those physical constants to be some value, and let the determine the units.

Now, for years, we did that with the meter, the unit of length. We define the speed of light to be exactly some value, and let the second determine the meter.

Things have progressed enough that we now define mass, the kilogram, in terms of the second. See the "watt balance". Here, we define Planck's constant to be a specific value, and knowing the meter and second, the kilogram is then determined.

That change to the kilogram took effect in 2020. The Kelvin and the Ampere (and unit of charge) also were changed.

Basically, the only arbitrary unit now is the second.

And that can be done away with as well when technology improves enough.

Same thing with accounting. How can you make anything work, when one of the components is undefined?

One of the things FDR did, along with confiscation of the money supply, was renege on gold bonds, and gold clause contracts. The latter were common for 99 year lease agreements.

There was an interesting court case on this. Terwilliger, I think. A Des Moines office building was being leased, and a sharp accountant noticed it had a gold clause contract, about 1985 or so. The leasers were paying something ridiculous, like $1000 a month. For the whole building, because it was based on 1900 year dollars. They prevailed.

Gold clause contracts are legal again. Something to think about, perhaps. Because there's no way to protect yourself without specifying some objective unit of account. "Medium of Exchange" only works over short time periods. This is why "currency" isn't money per se.

Or put another way, nobody ever had to force people to use gold as money. But they had to outlaw gold, and use the force of government to make people use their scrip.

There are tokens pegged to gold. The problem is who gets to be the "pegger" which sounds dirty but is a central issue with crypto. So there are service utility tokens who's only purpose is to extract consensus concerning external data like gold value with respect to other currencies and expose it to other tokens. The way this is done has to be visible and agreed to along the block chain.

I find that difficult. Usually when I find such resistance, an old saying comes to mind. "It is difficult to get a man to understand something, if his paycheck depends on him not understanding it." An extreme hostility to gold as money, was usually found by people who wanted "printing press money".

As Alan Greenspan said in 1966 "Gold stands in the way of this insidious process". His treatise on gold was quite good.

Buffett also wrote an excellent paper on gold money. Not Warren. Howard, Warren's dad. He was a congressman from Nebraska.

I'll continue in my argle bargle. I'm a big fan of gold, as the shit hit the fan hedge. But I realize that the gold is not any constant measure of any physical notion of value.

I'll tell you what you're after. You're after a unit of currency, the GDP deflator of which is pegged at a constant 1.0 over time. We could define it terms of a constant CPI style basket of goods deflator, but that is more problematic.

A GDP deflator is better. It means that a unit of currency buys the same fraction of GDP over time. A dollar in 2000 buys the same fraction of GDP in 2020. The problem is that notion of GDP. What an economy produces, what its people value, changes over time. [continued]

That's the best you can shoot for a a currency. Constant unit GDP deflator over time. Gold ain't gonna do that. Nothing much is gonna do that, save a central bank with a crystal ball that can adjust money supply to hit that peg. Central banks don't have a crystal ball, but an honest one could come close and maintain that, on average over long time scales.

Now, the problem with is GDP is average of the whole economy. Not any indivdual, which varies. The economy and any individual's notion of relative value can differ greatly.
