45 Anyway, I'm back from my trip but my brain is still driving. The visits with my sister, Mary Alice, went well. She is being well taken care of where she was at and has a friend in Indiana who is able to check in on her frequently. Briefly, my grandmother had Alzheimer's, my mother had Alzheimer's, and now my sister has it too. It is hard to believe that it was only about five years ago or so that she was a tenured professor teaching classes and doing ground-breaking botany research with her electron microscope. Now she doesn't even remember that she had been a professor. At least she still recognizes me and my brother. One positive thing is that she laughs or giggles a lot. She liked it when I played the piano in the common room and the other patients seemed to like it too. Based on my experience with my mother, it only gets worse from here. Pray for a cure.

Better to use rhetoric to point out that the guy is an NPC idiot who cares more about virtue signalling than his stated task of charging his computer.

Elvis Costello has a wistful song about dementia--Veronica that is quite tastefully done; i think family members inspired the song.

One of my parents has combined vascular and Alzheimer's dementia which my grandmother had as well. I and my sibling just had her placed in memory care because my sister could no longer take care of my parent living next door. Recent covid and botched pacemaker surgery sealed the deal last fall.

I had forgotten that disgusting story of the guy taking on a terrorist with an unapproved weapon. One of the problems with the idea of being a subject is that essentially your life and rights are on loan from a government subject to recall at any time. That is what the left is trying to import here.

I stand for the great natural rights tradition including the right to self defense because even the worst dictatorships give lip service to the idea that you may defend yourself from those seeking to end your life (aside from government of course). It is truly a universal right in law. But, that natural right has been twisted to the extent in most places to be purely an arbitrary decision by the state whether you will get to defend yourself or go to prison.

For some men, women have it all. I presume a lot of middle life tranny men are basing it on that idea...if only I was a woman I could do X!

Now...there is some limited truth to this. Richard Levine would still be in PA doing screwed up things there instead of in DC if he hadn't put on the dress...but for most men its not going to make your life better...

They give you licks (kisses). Robert will do this sometimes, but it always seems like "I'd rather be biting you, but I guess you expect this."

They snuggle against you in the night, and start purring.

The nestle on your chest in the night, and start purring.

None of the latter two. I'm tempted to get another cat, but I know they would just fight all night and all day. And I already have The Eraserhead Baby in an apartment too near mine.

I built a retro mod board track racer for a dude a few years ago. It was a hardtail frame styled similar to the old bikes, it had the low bars, springer front end, barrel style oil tank with the race number he had when racing motocross, and rearward shifter and brake pedals. It has a modern Evo style engine that we stroked and tweaked the shit out of. I custom fitted an old knuckle head air cleaner and some other goodies for the old vibe. Dude wins some big shows with it. Its a cool bike. Modern, yet old.

First strike on Kiev yesterday. One military-related factory (aerospace? hard to tell from russki reports). Also a simple statement that Kalibr (naval cruise missiles) had been used to hit two electrical sub-stations - locations not given. Infrastructure has til now not been a target. Could be getting more interesting.

There are claims that the Russian chief of staff, Gerasimov, is now present in what appears to be the major Russian operation in the east, a drive southeast from Izumi to partially cut off Donbass-region Uke forces. If true, not historically odd for the russkis. During WWII Zhukov and Vasilevsky both repeatedly left Moscow, where they were the top officers in the chain, to oversee major operations. Something not done in western armies.

Look up feline agression syndrome, cats that have been relocated often claim territory and will be loving one moment and biting the next. You have to treat it with aversion therapy. If on you , drop them to floor and walk away silently. If done when picking up, drop them and walk away.

We had a cat referred to an actual animal psychologist at a research vet school that had it. Siamese are particularly bad about it while it is more common for dogs.

Posted by: whig at April 30, 2022 12:22 AM (SZk2f)

320 Actually SFGoth I don't think that's the difference. "Human wave attacks" - if by this is meant un- or lightly-armed infantry mass attacks on prepared defenses, or basij-like stuff - were not a significant part of Soviet operations. Ill-advised or incompetently executed things that were similar occurred quite a bit, but there was no need for the top or No. 2 officer in the army to show up to get operations launched.

Zhukov sat in Moscow during most of the disastrous Operation Mars around Rzhev, and relieved commanders from a distance when he wanted. Vasilevsky spent quite a bit of time in the south overseeing Operation Uranus that trapped the 6th Army at Stalingrad, but not because troops or commanders wouldn't follow orders.

If the key operations of the war were taking place not far from Washington, there's a chance the top brass would be seen near the front for key operations.

343 Rhomboid, early in the war, and until supply was worked out, soviet follow-on echelons were unarmed - they were to get weapons off the dead during battle. For most of the war, soviet infantry had very little in the way of unit tactics and were slaughtered wholesale by German machine guns and artillery. There were just a lot more soviets. If the armies were anywhere near parity in troop strength, ussr would've lost. As it is, they lost so many men of fighting age (hence, reproductive age), it screwed them demographically after the war.

From what I have read about this Israeli production is it is so accurate in what is depicted that it triggered serious discussion about shutting down the show. It is a good watch.

Sniff the tailpipe while the engine is idling. If it has a sugary-sweet odor, the engine is burning antifreeze, which is a sign of blown head gasket or internal leak of some sort.

Pure breed Siamese used to be very aggressive cats; my brother had a neutered male one back in the '60s that would bite anyone, including himself. But like pure breed Doberman pinschers, it appears as if a lot of the aggression has been bred out of them over the years. Don't know what to say about chihuahuas, though, as for a small pure breed dog they seem overly aggressive and yap their fool heads off.

On one vacation in mid-September, I visited Mt. Washington in NH. At the base, it was around 85 degrees. Bought a ride on the 'for tourists' van with the heavy-duty gears and brakes. When we got to the summit, it was around freezing, over a 50 degree drop.

Back when I was toodling around southwest Virginia, if I saw a car without NC, VA or WV plates in the mountains, I gave them a wide berth, even in summer. I remember going over East River Mountain on US 460 often as a kid (as I had family on both sides; now it's a tunnel on I-77). It was two-lane with many a blind curve. On the Virginia side, which seemed like a 30 to 45 minute base to summit journey, one didn't trust oncoming traffic to stay in their lane so you took the blind curves around huge boulders gingerly, especially coming down as being forced off the road and rolling down the mountain would not be fun.

Yeah, well, when the top wind speed recorded was 231 m.p.h., tying a building down seems prudent; I thought that wind speed was rather impressive though I would NOT have wanted to experience it -- in a building tied down or not. Even Hurricane Camille (1969) didn't have that wind speed.

It's also the first sentence of a very cool book by Neal Stephenson called "Seveneves", which I just reminded myself I need to read again. The Moon blows up and the shards rain down on Earth and obliterate humanity. Enough time passes from the exploding moon to the obliteration of the Earth for people to shoot a bunch of rockets into space, one of which is carrying millions of frozen human ovum, and humanity ends up saving itself by creating a civilization in orbit around the dead Earth.

426 The last great Western was Open Range. 310 to Yuma was good if the context rang true. "The Jack Bull" is a fave of mine. It has libertarian motifs like Open Range.

They keep playing Pale Rider over and over on broadcast tv. It is a good flick with many flaws
The best part is the good guy and bad
Guy could not have been more perfectly cast.

430 Pale Rider had a very svelt Chris Penn. Penn was a legit acting talent on the level of Phillip S. Hoffman. That poor guy got really unhealthy. His last movies showed that. I don't know the reason, and I am not judging, but that guy was a Hell of an actor.

Posted by: Quint at April 30, 2022 03:55 AM (9Nf6B)

431 429, I liked it. English Bob and Hackman were the best by far. I do wonder what the film means to types that didn't watch the previous ten Eastwood Westerns.

440 Unforgiven was a gre
at film. There were great performances from top to bottom. Really all of the main actors were ex excellent.
When it came out, many saw it as an apology by Eastwood for his previous films. But really the movie stood alone. He did many Westerns the that were easily as good.

The thing about Eastwood Westerns is he he is always the center. Whether it be The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly or Pale Rider. Every Eastwood aWestern became eveven more about him. I think Pale Rider was the epitome, but the rest were all tied for second.

450 Ah, the great antibiotic drip (IV). Spent a whole week in a hospital alone in a room. They isolated me for some reason. Every 6 hours no matter day or night. Try and sleep and on come the lights for changing the bag...worse week you could possibly have when your not really sick. Bag empties, then the alarm and eventually someone comes and turns off the alarm. All for a Urinary Infection.
