Thursday's ONT Is On The Clock

Hello everybody! ONT time. Since the ONT is such a serious thread, maybe we should start by talking about slippery slopes:

Slippery Slope.jpg

As you can see, it's all David French's fault.

I Have No Idea Who This Is

And I don't know why he's in Afghanistan, but if he's legit, and you can get $300 nods? You could make a LOT of money importing those, and I don't think there are any prohibitions on importing them.

Deadeye Dick

Analysis: Alec Baldwin’s Gun Could Have Fired Without Him Pulling the Trigger, But Did It?

Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza identified the gun used in the shooting as a modern Pietta replica of a single-action army revolver. Those guns can be bought either with a transfer bar that makes it impossible for the firing pin to strike the primer unless the trigger is pulled or without one. Often, enthusiasts and collectors prefer the models without modern safety devices because it’s more authentic and perfectly safe when handled properly.

A single-action revolver usually requires the hammer to be manually cocked, and the trigger be pulled for a shot to be fired. That’s why it’s referred to as a single-action: because the trigger performs just one action. It drops the hammer. In a double-action revolver, on the other hand, the trigger can both cock and release the hammer.

However, a single-action revolver with the old-style firing mechanism can fire without either the hammer being cocked or the trigger being pulled. When the hammer is down on that kind of revolver, the firing pin protrudes and, if a live round is loaded in the chamber underneath, a sharp enough jolt can cause the pin to strike the round’s primer with enough force to set it off.

This is why the “cowboy load” was developed. When carrying an old-style single-action revolver, it’s best practice to leave the chamber underneath the hammer unloaded. That way, a jolt can’t unintentionally set off a round.

We all know that, but it doesn't really apply. Baldwin was waving the gun around, not jolting it. The article finally does get around to what I've always thought happened. I bet he was squeezing the trigger from the second he drew then gun. He then fiddled with the hammer, and the firing pin struck the primer and a woman died. He never “pulled” the trigger because he was squeezing it the whole time.

NFL Draft

Is going on right now. Does anyone care? If you do, talk about it in the comments. Did you like the selection your team made? Hate it? Let us know.

Old Man River

America's Achilles' Heel: the Mississippi River's Old River Control Structure

Pretty interesting look at the engineering feat that keeps the Mississippi River where we want it to go, as opposed to where it wants to go. The river is overdue for a shift, into the course of the Atchafalaya River, which is twice as steep and half as long as the bed the river is in now. The only reason it hasn't switched yet is the Old River Control Structure. The crowning jewel in hat of the the US Army Corps of Engineers, the ORCS is an engineering marvel, but there are problems on the horizon. I'll let you read the article for more, but it's fascinating (all 3 parts). H/t Comrade Arthur

Mentally Ill

How the trans ideology dehumanises women

It's a book review of a book by a dude who is trans, and it's impossible to read the excerpts without realizing that he is mentally ill, literally foaming at the mouth crazy.

This book is about his gender transition. It is one of the most misogynistic books I have ever read. The way it talks about women and their bodies is repellent. Lavery tells his doctor he wants ‘titty skittles’ – that is, progesterone supplements to ‘enlarge one’s breasts’. Hot tip for Mr Lavery: women don’t refer to their breasts as titties. He talks about the ‘leaky boobs’ of those ‘sour’ feminists and Mumsnet users who are critical of the ideology of transgenderism. Yeh, why can’t you old hags have pert titties like Mr Lavery apparently does? He writes of his ‘phantom pussy’, which is probably just the ‘inguinal canals into which my testicles retreat when frigid’ but to him it nonetheless feels like a ‘subcutaneous cluster of nerve endings and open space, roughly oval’, like a vagina. Oh sure, exactly like a vagina. When did it become acceptable to write about women’s bodies in such a deluded, degraded fashion?

There's more at the link, but I warn you, it's a wild ride.

Gardening Content

45 Unique Garden Design Ideas

Not to intrude onto KT's pea patch, but there are some decent ideas in there. Some crap, as with most clickbait articles, but some gold among the dross too.

In other garden news, I finished setting up my garden beds for drip irrigation. I have 20 beds arraigned in 10 “blocks”; 5 columns: A,B,C,D and E, and each column has a (F)ront block and a (R)ear block of 2 beds. I even made a giant control panel out of old hoses that allows me to shunt the water wherever it needs to go:

Irrigation 2.jpg

Sure, it looks like a decapus from Nemo's nightmare, but it works brilliantly. Once I bury all the hoses under wood chips you won't even have to worry about stepping on or tripping over them.

Heart Stopping

Great save mom, great save. I aged a decade watching this, I can't imagine what you went through.

Some Real Art Here

Tattoos have never been my thing, although I've never had a problem chuckling at bad ones. What do you do with those bad tattoos, however? You cover them up, of course. The downside is that it requires a much bigger commitment to ink. The upside is that you may get a true work of art on your body, like some of these: Reworked Tattoos

Wretched Hive Of Scum And Villainy

The Only People More Corrupt Than Joe Biden Are The Journalists Covering Him

Derek Hunter is a giant. He's also a damn good political commentator, and here is right on the money.

Life in the Jungle report for tonight

Leaving the kitchen window open for the cat to go in and out has some consequences.

Big dang buzzfly in the house for two days. First thing when I woke up this morning, he buzzed me. Finally met his end a few minutes ago at the hands of Mighty Huntress Jo.

Thought some really huge bug was in the kitchen this morning, batting furiously against the window. Turned out it was the first hummingbird we'd seen this year. Escorted outside using the Mindful Webworks BugCup™.

I suppose I should've saved all this for the pet thread...

42 75 years ago, today, April 28, 1947, six (6) Scandinavians boarded a raft made of balsa logs in Quito, Peru, and set sail across the South Pacific, intending to prove that Polynesia was populated not from Australia/Asia, but from South America. 101 days and 4,300 miles later, they crashed onto Raroia reef in French Polynesia, proving the theory had [sea] legs: https://tinyurl.com/Raroia-Paradise-FP

The name of their boat? Kon-Tiki, after a sun god, who was based in turn on a legendary white king who had been banished from Peru onto balsa rafts thousands of years ago. Tonight I am watching the original 1951 Oscar winning documentary filmed by the leader of that crew, Thor Heyerdahl, and listening to CSN's "Southern Cross", the greatest sailing song of all time, on infinite loop: https://tinyurl.com/CSN-Southern-Cross

If you're unfamiliar with the Kon-Tiki Expedition, here's wiki:

73 I have a guess as to why many doctors refuse to do a hysterectomy on a 21 year old woman, but there are doctors who will remove the organs of a 10 year old boy who supposedly wants to be a girl. The doctors who don't want to do the hysterectomy are normal and understand that there is a very good chance that the 21 year old woman may change her mind in ten years. They have scruples.

The doctors who are removing sex organs of 10 year old boys are apparently as batshit crazy as the boys and the adults surrounding them. They're putting leftwing identity politics ideology ahead of common sense.

A great adventure, even if it failed to prove anything.

3. Don't let shark bite your hand off when he takes the dolphin;

5. Shark goes instantly to sleep. Pull on deck.

162 Consensus now is that Heyerdahl's theory was incorrect. Polynesia wasn't settled by Peruvians, but Polynesians did trade with Peru, obviously by balsa raft.

The crew of Kon-Tiki was LEGEND in the best possible way, if only for their shark-catching exploits. A couple of them were decorated during World War 2 (Knut Haugland) for helping kill the Nazi's attempt to build an atomic bomb, and (Torstein Raaby) helped destroy the battleship Tirpitz.

I don't really care if the theory is true. It caught my imagination as a young lad and helped turn me into the endlessly inquisitive nerd that I am today.

Dime store philosophy:
Remember that scene in Avengers where Bruce Banner says "wanna know my secret? I'm always angry."

The world is a lot like that. It's always been screwed up, things have always been awful for most of us, doom has always been impending any minute now. And it's only our ability to escape into delusion that makes things seem bearable for a while. And yet - the sun still shines, and the birds still sing. The final answer, I think, is that in the grand scheme of things our little concerns just don't matter a whole lot. And once you accept that they don't matter, then you don't have to be concerned about what will or won't happen to the world. It will take care of itself - or not. Whatever. Meanwhile, find what joy you can.

The Polynesians on Rappa Nui probably got to the West coast of South America, but probably never got back to main stream Polynesia. So he decided to take one last fling trip to Puerto Vallarta, and spent a week blowing the whole $20k on mexican hookers and cocaine.

Might be useful in southern climates, where most of the year is A/C season. Presumably the heat pump water heater would warm the water by cooling the room. Here in Alberta, where I pay to keep the house warm, the cost savings might be less, or even negative.

One thing I would like to see, on refrigerators and freezers, is ducts to the outdoors, with software-controlled fans to duct in cool, and/or frigid outside air to keep the cool/cold compartments at their proper temperature without kicking in the power-hog compressor.

Exactly. I wouldn't oppose this stuff, and might even find a fraction of it useful if it were all local control. That is, I run some software that talks to my shit over the local network for monitoring and control

Industrial and commercial controls have been doing that for a long time, it was just way more expensive and complex than for residential shit. But it was all local control.

No, they way they do this it has to go through the Cloud, to the company's servers over the Internet and back. Fuck that shit.

The idea is to mount them in the garage, or outside the conditioned space of the house. In summertime, you're indeed A/Cing the garage, moving heat from ambient to heat the water.

They call them "hybrids" because they have regular resistance elements in them as back up. In wintertime, it will switch to that, or act as "strips". You can look up the performance and temperature ranges.

313 How long have heat pump ACs been around? at # 284

If you mean heat pump water heaters, I'm not familiar with this tech, but I do know that an ac unit running on cool has the outdoor condenser unit dumping a lot of heat. Somehow the system transfers that waste heat to the water heater. Don't know about the efficiency, reliability or cost, but it makes sense.
If you DO mean heat pump ACs, they are just the cat's meow! Coupled to the proper thermostat, you can set the temp you like, and it will automatically shift from heat to cool based on the temp you set. No WIFI involved,

They are loud though, when they are running. Put it somewhere you don't care about the noise. Mine lasted maybe 8 years before the heat pump portion $&@t the bed. Maybe it needs a shot of freon or whatever, can't remember what the code was. So I run it on the resistance elements.

I was looking it up. The low temp limit is about 40F for the standard "all in one" units, Water tank with the heat pump unit on top.

They do make "split" systems, with an outdoor evaporator unit, and claim those can go down to -25F ambient and still heat water efficiently.

An air conditioner is a heat pump. It just cools the inside and dumps the heat outside. Reverse that and hit the inside, and you have a heat pump.

Thermodynamically a heat pump is the opposite of a heat engine. In an engine, you let heat flow downhill (from hot to cold, as it naturally does), and extract work in the process.

A heat pump just reverses that. You input work to the system in order to pump heat uphill, from cold to hot.

The big question was why did the civilization collapse? They are blaming warfare and climate change (darned SUVs) but where did the copper tech go and where did the people go?
There were droughts in the 1300s in the Southwest and the Aztecs moved to central Mexico at that time, but I don't see a lot of links in climate from there to the Mississippi valley .
I think there was initial European contacts at that time that spread a European disease through the Mississippi drainage, and possibly the East coast as well. However there is no archeological evidence, though a single ship or possibly more that touched and left would not leave much physical evidence

Most of the men are there because their womenfolk dragged them, there are few single womenfolk over the age of 21, and most of the married womenfolk who dragged their non-dancing husbands won't dance with men they don't know. They sell it in the grocery stores around here -- it's usually in the yogurt section, or close to it. "Lifeway" is a common brand, and there's another one. Publix sells that other one I can't think of.

They have strawberry, raspeberry, blueberry, and even chocolate flavor sometimes. This is one of the things you can thank the health nuts for popularizing enough to get it in stores.

Again, it's one of the best probiotics there is, much better than yogurt, and all those expensive pills you'll see them selling.

Kefir is also good for general upset stomach problems, at least for some people. I first got to using upon recommendation for the antibiotic gut discombulating treatment, but after reading it about, tried it a few times when my bowels were otherwise in an uproar. It helped.

As I'm getting older, I'm discovering that I've inherited some "bowel uproar" problems, known. I won't mention the name of my maternal grandmother's family name, but it's the "X-stomach". My mother has it, and I apparently do too, as I'm noting the symptoms.

When one gets to 29, if one has those genes, one's stomach gets tricky. Crampy and shit. Kefir actually helps.

I think the "X-stomach" may have to do with the dreaded FODMAPs. I love turnip greens, mustard greens, spinach, etc. Not too big a fan of collards, though.

Anyway, when I hit 29, really good and hard, I noticed that if ate too much of those in any one setting, my gut would get too cramping and burning.

A bait of too much raw onion will do it too. Kefir can settle that down for me, I learned.

Science(TM) could probably explain the X-stomach, but it's not too bad for me, yet.

As a former Scout myself, what the Woke did to Scouting pisses me off. Scouting was a great way for a boy to let his inner arsonist out by building bonfires and such as well as playing with sharp implements like knives and axes. Beheading rattlesnakes that slithered into your campsite and throwing the heads into the fire to watch that head continue to bite was a guilty pleasure. No, we didn't kill all snakes, just the bad ones that could do damage as we were usually a good road-less distance away from decent medical treatment, so a survival skill.

525 Not the fastest boat on the seas, but a fine cruising rig.

50 ft. class Ketch, conventional mizzen, loose-footed main with vertical self-furling, self furling jib and hank-on cutter rig staysail. You can also fly a hank on inner jib from the mizzen to a stanchion anchored just aft of the mainmast itself.

That'll give you up to five sails aloft, under way. The loose-footed main gives a LOT of forgiveness from gusts, not burying the leeward rail into the drink. Plus, it's a superb light-air performer. Wee bit of trimming under way, and it's still a sterling, single-handed ocean going rig. Oh, did I say "not the fastest?"

Well, it's not going to run with a Volvo Ocean Race sloop, or a large cruising cat or tri. But, it'll still give you 200 miles per day on average.

Who? Shingles from GrubHub?

You want time travel, as Godel showed Einstein, you need mucho frame dragging. Mass-energy that is spinning, big time. That's how you get closed time-like curves, which are time travel.

Only problem with time travel is the grandfather paradox. You go back in time, kill your grandfather. But then you don't exist, and so can't go back in time. But then you exist, and then go back in time. Such is a paradox, a logical contradiction in the universe.

That's bad.

Posted by: Puddleglum at April 29, 2022 03:22 AM (sAmhv)

588
Besides these logical contradiction thingies, you can also have non-contradictory, but equally problematic things caused causal loops. Rather than killing your grandfather, you go back in time and save your grandfather's life. He was about to be hit by a bus, but you went back in time and saved his life.

You are your own cause. You exist because you exist. This is just as bad as a contradiction, but it doesn't "blow up the universe". It leads to an "acausal spacetime". Shit came into existence that is not predicted by the initial conditions. Just as bad. Means "anything can happen".

Again, this is bad. While General Relativity allows it, most everyone assumes that some other law of physics precludes it. There are hints, but no proof.

Time travel is a real bitch. Just fucks everything up.

Fry tries to save his grandfather from his stupidity, and puts in right at ground zero of an atomic bomb test. Like grandfather like grandson.
