CBD,
You got the water-powered pump amounts backwards. I got one from my plumber after Hurricane Sandy & it uses 1 gal of water to pump 2 gal from my sump pit. There are cheaper models you can get that are 1 or 1. It doesn't matter now how long my power is out as long as I have water pressure. Naturally I've never had to use it since I got it installed. badgerwx Posted by: badgerwx at April 24, 2022 02:12 PM (cL7E+) 19

I have 2 sump pumps to combat a shitty sewer system that closes the gates progressively from Chicago to me which results in water spouts shooting out of sewers including blowing the lids off. Pumps keep up with it but I used to get a few inches of it every year. Not good. Found a plumber who suggested a one way flap valve on my line and I've been good ever since. $5500 was well worth it.

Seems to me, that instead of trying to make one critical system, the sump pump, failsafe, the answer might be to get a propane-fueled generator, and an automatic transfer switch.
I assume that storms are the most likely cause of power loss, and flooding, and there are other critical systems, like heat and food storage that need backup, too. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at April 24, 2022 02:16 PM (03Fd8) 25

I've heard good things about the water powered sump pumps. Yes, they're inefficient in terms of the amount of water pumped for the amount of water consumed, but they are simple, very little to go wrong, and just work, as long as you have water. Obviously, if you're on a well, and your well pump runs from the same power source as your normal sump pump, they aren't for you. if you're on reliable city water they make a good backup and beat the heck out of a flooded basement.

The only real, permanent solution: a permanent natural gas or propane standby generator with automatic transfer switch. Just bite the bullet and make it happen.

But those are weak sauce compared to a 120 volt sump pump, and my basement is a flooding risk, so I wanted a more powerful pump as a back-up. We had a terrible time with basement flooding in our 150-year-old house in Ohio. We improved the drainage, carrying the water from the downspouts much farther away from the house. That cleared the problem up completely. Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at April 24, 2022 02:29 PM (/U27+) 58
The water driven pump is a good idea. Considering that water is cheap and you are going to replacing batteries every couple of years for a relatively rare event, it really needs to be seriously considered. Maintenance is just raising the float switch every year or so to work the seal on the water motor supply.
Plumber knows what he is talking about. Some big back-up generators have a compressed air storage and use an air motor to turn over the diesel engine. This is considered to be a highly reliable configuration. Considering the very large number of single point failures, this is they way to go IMHO. I have a full basement too. The plumber tested my water pressure before installing the pump to make sure it was sufficient. And everyone's comments about drainage and getting your downspouts away from the foundation and make sure that your grade pitches away from the house and all that... Yes of course that is all fabulous advice. I'm assuming you've done all that, just like I already did. But at some point the laws of physics take over, and a ground saturated with water is going to try to get infiltrate a hike in the earth at the point of least resistance, and that point of least resistance is my basement. The sump pump WILL need to run from time to time, and the basement WILL flood if it does not. If that is the situation you are in, you need a backup generator. There's just really no other right answer.

When I first moved here we had a hellacious rain storm that not only flooded my basement but washed away a stone retaining wall.
____________ Stately Chateau Merde had a retaining wall covered in stucco. Unfortunately, the idiot (aka "the previous owner") who put it in did not think to include weep holes in the wall. So when we got one of our periodic Biblical rainstorms (yes, we get 'em here in SoCal) the water pressure behind the wall basically tore away half of the stucco. The idiot also put down plastic sheeting between the wall and the house, and covered with decorative rock. So water coming through the wall had no place to go, leading to six inches of water up against the wall of the house. I found the sheeting, tore it out, dug a trench the length of the house (no mean feat for a 29+ homeowner) in the torrential rain and installed a French drain to a sump and a sump pump in the yard that drained to the street. Problem solved. Posted by: Deplorable Jay Guevara at April 24, 2022 02:37 PM (YqDXo) 73
There was a house in north Wichita KS that was being offered at 25% original offer price. The agent said sure come by and look there's no lock on the door. The basement was an indoor swimming/mud pool. There was mold up above on the first floor walls from floors to ceiling. Ceilings were bowing down. It smelled like a underground cave. A year and a half later I saw the same house back on the market way up in price again. Sheetrock all new. Probably new flooring throughout. Basement was finished. You could still feel what was under it all though. Just a feeling, you could just barely smell, taste it in the air.

I should also say that these pumps have a built-in backflow value so the sump water can't contaminate my house water. My basement has drain tile around the perimeter & it all drains into the sump. So I need a working pump when it rains.

AOP,
The air reservoir is relatively large. The compressors would kick on to maintain the pressure. They would normally cycle any way because everything leaks to some degree. A large leak would force the compressor to run continuously and that would draw attention. This is how diesel generators are backed up in critical high capacity power station. They also make a huge amount of noise. Posted by: pawn at April 24, 2022 02:46 PM (Cfk8j) Posted by: Miley, the Duchess at April 24, 2022 02:46 PM (Mzdiz) 82
I've had both a battery backup and a water-driven system.
Water-driven is the way to go. The problem with a battery is not just keeping it "fresh" but when you go away for a weekend and the power is out for a few hours during a torrential rain storm (which often goes together, right?), you come home to a very wet basement. With the water option, no worries. Unless the municipal system goes down, you're covered. Water bill might be a little higher, but it beats the replacement furnace and water heater from when the battery died. Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Lloyd at April 24, 2022 02:47 PM (llXky) 83

A couple of other options I've had encounters with, not for pumps, just for power generally.
A Honda 2200W generator, which I converted to use propane instead of gas, because I didn't want to mess with making sure the gas doesn't get all sticky. It's small and probably lighter than your batteries. Or, if not, at least it has a handle. There's a thriving market for portable batteries aimed at the RV crowd. Needing a way to power lights in a barn far enough from the house that running wires seemed like an expensive idea, I got a small one, and some solar panels that keep things charged. Not sure whether they have the capacity to run your pump as long as you need, but it might be worth looking into. The industry seems to be in an early phase. A recent Kickstarter (or equivalent) offered a battery like that that was completely waterproofed. Amazing to me that they're not all like that already. In case you were wondering what the hell the left is on about with "systemic racism" and "white privilege" here's a sample:
Seattle's mass transit decided to go with a "honor system" fare method... By one measurement, as many as a staggering 70% of all passengers are free riders. But even that is only an estimate as there is almost no fare enforcement. Sound Transit did away with fare enforcement officers after a study revealed people of color were disproportionately getting fined. Its that last sentence that is key. The leftist race baiters see that last line and proclaim "see minorities are being oppressed, white people don't face this kind of disproportionate punishment, its proof of your privilege!" Except... the obvious, factual conclusion is that white people tend to pay their fares, and do not try to ride for free, stealing from the bus line.
Posted by: pawn at April 24, 2022 02:46 PM (Cfk8j) Yeah, they use air starts on some oil rig Diesels. Very noisy is right. What works for large-scale industrial installations doesn't necessarily work for home backup power. I'd favor propane over Diesel, as the fuel will not go bad in the tank, and first cost is lower. Western countries rig the electoral systems by seeing to it that voters never get a meaningful choice, through various means. Lightning struck in 2016-2020, so they had to resort to more less subtle measures - naked parliamentary legerdemain to overturn Brexit, and blatant
coup attempts and vote fraud to get rid of Trump. Election integrity isn't the solution many think it is. If these little mishaps keep mishappening, if people can't learn their lesson and vote as they're commanded to, they'll just dispense with the pleasantry of elections, altogether. I've seen old buildings down by the river that look like they have subfloors, like half basements. Latest Fluke meters have that extremely annoying auto shut off feature. I don't know how many times I've worked my way into a position to place the probes and then looked at the meter to a blank display.
I have a nice Chinese meter that give you a 30 second warning beep before it goes stupid. Posted by: pawn at April 24, 2022 04:14 PM (Cfk8j) 242

My FWP is the USPS. For the last couple of years, the carrier doesn't close the door on my mailbox about 10-20% of the time. Including, once again, this week.
Door works fine, it isn't hard to open or close. The first couple of times I found it open, I went down the street and sure enough, found several other unclosed doors. So it ain't something I did to the carrier inadvertently. But sure as death and taxes, if I call to complain about this my mail will be getting 'lost'. Sigh. Anyone else notice this trend? Posted by: GnuBreed at April 24, 2022 03:42 PM For us it is the USPS driver, he drives like a maniac. When we are out walking the dogs we duck and cover when we see his little truck roaring down the street. Sometimes that doesn't help and he came within 2 feet of me and black dog three the other day when he was on his daily rampage. Complaining does no good, all you get is a "we'll look into it". Yes, Netflix is a loser, progressive piece of shit company, but I am watching a series there called Fauda, which is about an Israeli defense team tracking down a terrorist they thought they killed.
Pretty good so far. I have no sense of Hebrew or Arabic, but I caught in the subtitles that fauda means chaos, which makes sense as far as the story is going! Posted by: Deplorable Ian Galt at April 24, 2022 04:29 PM (n50Jy) 245

GPS governors limit passing speed -> clumping.
Posted by: DaveA at April 24, 2022 04:21 PM (FhXTo) Well, then, if you drive for a company that uses those governors, learn not to try to pass. How hard can it be? Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at April 24, 2022 04:46 PM (7k9Lr) 251
Right - don't buy Chinese. Partly for the politics of it, but mostly because the Chinese product is always junk. Their entire nationwide QA/QC program is "whatever we can get away with." To have any guarantee of quality out of China you need to have inspectors there watching every move the millwrights, fabricators, and assemblers do - which makes it NOT cheaper to import from China.
Why anyone would buy something that requires robust quality from China is beyond me. Good grief, just browsing the aisles in Harbor Freight should be enough lesson in the low-quality of Chinese production. Posted by: LCMS Rulz! at April 24, 2022 04:57 PM (K58O6) 252
Actually that battery is close to CEL reversal which would be dangerous to charge. Hoping you change quickly and make sure it's charged atabout 2.27 v per cell.
Posted by: EllaMentary at April 24, 2022 05:20 PM (5TEod) 253
If they are lead acid batteries you could open the cells for gas to vent then use a power supply set at 20 Volts for an hour to descale the plates. Check the voltage level again. if it goes up >20%, change the electrolyte and charge normally. Otherwise scrap them.

It depends on how high the water needs to be lifted. I have a full-depth basement!
While they can easily lift water that high, normally water eductor style sump pumps use a float valve to actuate the motive water - therefore need to be mounted close to the sump. Posted by: Pmrich at April 24, 2022 08:13 PM (mrX66) 258
We had a large sump with a double pump installed in our farmhouse. One pump was 120v AC, the backup pump was a 12 VDC pump powered by a deep cycle battery with maintainer/charger to keep it at full charge. It also had the usual water collection stuff underneath the edge of the floor slab and another down the middle of the slab. Totally dried the basement up which previously had water in it year-round.
Worked great - however during routine maintenance, the company found that the AC pump had failed, and the DC pump was doing all the work. Because the AC power was still on, the alarm didn't sound. Have no idea how long it had been that way - possibly as long as a couple for a couple of years. Posted by: Dr Bob at April 24, 2022 08:52 PM (BvnCG) 259
I've replaced my Zoeller pump 3 times in the last 6 years. Was told by my Zoeller tech it's running too much and the capacitor(that cannot be replaced) is burning out and I should get a smaller pump w/o the cap. WTF!
