Good idea. There are a lot of bistros in the area we're going. And a coffee place stands right across from the tobacconist. Both are too far to walk from the clothing joint, so I'll have to drive back to pick her up. I wouldn't mind if the temp were going to be in the 60s, but 85? Rotten. Wretched, to use her own word when the weather here was this warm and humid at Christmas last year.

The spider in the custard is that the store loads all the sale items onto racks or in tubs *out on the street* -- in the hot sunlight. You can go into the A/C in the store, but in either case there is not much men's clothing, and I lose interest in a few minutes. Driving up the street to sit and read for a while is the better option.

One of the implications of Dunning-Kruger is the "Mt. Stupid" condition. Sometimes called Dunning-Kruger's Mt. Stupid.

Take somebody. Teach him something about a subject. Early on, as his knowledge increases, he thinks he knows everything. His eyes are opened to a little bit of the complexity. He reaches a sophomoric (sophomore = wise foll) peak.

This is Mt. Stupid. You know just enough to be dangerous, but think you're master of your domain. Now, as your actual knowledge progresses, you get past the peak and reach a "Valley of despair". You realize how dumb you were. You didn't know anything. Things were far more complex than you imagined in you initial understanding.

Now, you go on. Your confidence increases, but you never get to the highs of Mt. Stupid. Way off on that tail lies true wisdom.

One of my favorite comedians was Dennis Wolfberg (RIP) and he has a routine about when he was teaching in NYC - Bronx I think - Slow Class. They had 3 official categories of stupid: cretin, idiot, moron (or something like that in improving order). So the idiot kid gets upgraded and runs home, "Mum, Mum, I'm a moron!"

I used to use AdBlock Plus. Then some sites starting employing anti-adblocker defenses. You'd get some shit about "turn off your adblocker".

uBlock has some anti-anti-abblocker measures in it.

Some sites get around that. Updated filters can sometimes fix that, but sometimes not. I don't bother with those sites any more.

A very good observation.

55 Odd thing happened this week. We were having some electrical work done and needed to empty the large closet downstairs. All the way in back was an old PC, An AMD Phenom II X4 965 system which I had no memory of whatsoever. I was baffled. Was this given to me and I shoved it in there and forgot about it?

I dragged it upstairs and got it connected. It was definitely mine and appears to have been my main desktop about ten years ago. It's name even made reference to the PC it replaced. But I simply cannot recall building this machine at all. It was use long enough to have received an early release of Windows 10, but was plagued with broken links like not being able to find the photo app when selecting a JPG file.

I'm going to pull the two 500GB hard drives (one parallel!) and drop it at Goodwill. Maybe somebody can make a Linux system from for somebody with no better options. It isn't worth trying to do anything with as I've several far better newer PCs on hand and taking up my limited space. What bothers me is that I have no memory of building it or putting it in the closet, despite it being my primary desktop for at least a year. Did I have a plan for it?

Be sure to enable the "annoyances" filters in uBlock, which aren't enabled by default. "Fanboy's annoyances" plus uBlock annoyances. That will get a lot of the anti-adblockers.

I also enable all the anti-social filters, which block out all the facebook, twatter, etc, shit that clogs up everything.

Iodine supplementation has probably done more to increase the collective IQ of the population that anything else. In general, improving nutrition has done much to increase IQ.

On the other end of the IQ spectrum, the high tails, well. No one knows for sure, 'cause IQ testing wasn't perfected then. Einstein's IQ is estimated to be about 160. John Quincy Adams' IQ is estimated at 175 (he was the smartest president according to this metric).

Believe it or not, Shakespeare's IQ (or the guy who wrote all that shit) is estimated to be 210.

Some politically incorrect, triggering fun facts. The mean IQ of men and women is the same, but the standard deviation is greater for men. Women are tighter about the mean.

So, in a statistically large enough sample, the smartest person in the room will likely be a man. Also, the dumbest in the room will be a man. This is why men dominate the high end. But they also dominate the low end.

IQ is normalized to 100, with a normal SD of 15 points. Now,IQ has been steadily increasing, about 4 points per decade over the last century. This is thought to be due to better nutrition and health care, etc.

However, the idiocracy effect is real, and will likely take over and dominate the increasing trend now.

162 143 I find this interesting . A former engineer for DuPont goes back to school to become an auto mechanic and wants to open auto repair places run by women. I have never seen a woman auto mechanic, but I would think a former engineer might be good as one:

Had one here at our local Midas. Very nice looking too. She fixed my door panel on my 2000 Intrepid. I had the car in to fix the driver-side window and the door panel was so brittle with age that parts crumbled. They found me one online with a leather interior and didn't charge me or it. Cool.
