The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“Oh, so people who disagree with Barack Obama aren’t just saying things that are wrong they’re flooding raw sewage into our country. So this guy is not just liberal, in fact, he’s not liberal at all, he’s a full-blown fascist who hates you and wants to keep you from talking, or else"Tucker Carlson

Quote II

"Whatever happens, it's incredibly important that the Utah Democratic Party understands there are a lot of voters in this state who right now feel like their vote doesn't matter. This election does matter. Mike Lee is beatable, and how we beat him is not going to take just some of us but all of us.Former State Department diplomat Kael Weston

Quote III

“This has been a nightmare for me. We moved everything from Kaylie to the Easter Bunny, and those should have all been cleaned up so you wouldn’t be able to see that.”Stacy Curtis, a criminal division supervisor in the Polk County Clerk of Court’s Office

Quote IV

“The world expo movement has always been about the best of human civilization. Right now, we’re living through some of the worst of it. … [The world’s fair is] something that we need to celebrate why we belong together.”Mina Chow, an architecture expert at the University of Southern California

How is that wind power working out for you? Please don't ask Endangered Bird species in California.

Of California’s 23 vulnerable bird species studied (barn owls, golden eagles, road runners, yellow-billed cuckoos…, scientists have found 11 are now experiencing at least a 20% decline in their population growth rates because wind turbines and solar panels are killing them and/or destroying their limited-range habitat.

California’s mild-winter Mediterranean climate is home to some of Earth’s rarest bird ecosystems.

But California is also where some of the most ardent supporters of “green” energy policies reside.

Disproportionately due to California’s activist-level insistence on converting their energy infrastructure from fossil-fuel-based to renewables-based, the US as a whole has facilitated a 300% to 9,400% increase in wind and solar energy generation, respectively, from 2009 to 2019. Nation-wide, the solar power industry alone is poised to detonate from a 0.4 GW energy capacity in 2009 to 75 GW by 2025.

The Fabulous drives a 10 year old Buick with a lot of life left in it. Our plow truck is a 1998 Chevy going strong. What about your GM EV Spark?

General Motors will reportedly no longer provide battery replacements for the all-electric version of the Chevy Spark, according to a report from EV-Resource (via InsideEVs). The Chevy Spark electric vehicle (EV) was first released in 2013, and GM continued to make new models until 2016.

A GM district executive confirmed to EV-Resource that the company is “no longer going to supply that [the Spark EV’s] battery.” GM’s inventory of Spark EV battery packs has reportedly run out as well, and the company doesn’t plan on making any more. The Verge reached out to GM with a request for comment but didn’t immediately hear back.

With the oldest model of the Spark EV reaching almost 10 years old, vehicle owners may find themselves without a working car if their battery pack fails. GM offers an eight-year / 100,000-mile warranty specifically for the battery pack in its Spark EVs and other electric vehicles, which means the warranty has already run out (or is very close to running out) for Spark EVs released in 2013 and 2014. It’s unclear if GM will continue to honor its warranty and somehow replace the battery pack in broken-down Sparks, or as EV-Resource points out, if GM will offer to buy back the vehicle instead of replacing the battery.

Nice marketing ploy. Will all the EV manufacturers do this in the future?

Our southern border is a fvcking joke. So is the War on Drugs.

A National Guard soldier who helped rescue some migrants is still missing, and the search continues amid new reports that those migrants were involved in drug smuggling.

The Guardsman, who remains unidentified by military authorities, had jumped into the Rio Grande river on Friday in order to rescue two Mexican immigrants who had been drowning. As of this writing, the search had failed to turn up the missing guardsman, though authorities continue their efforts to recover the individual, which reportedly involves efforts from multiple state and federal agencies.

Russia invades Ukraine. Which country is Europe rooting for?

In a shocking report, the UK newspaper The Telegraph has reported European capitols are selling Russia weapons for use in the Ukrainian conflict, taking advantage of loopholes in sanctions to hypocritically accomplish.

Despite a 2014 EU decision on an arms embargo to Russia after it invaded Crimea, between 2015-2020 10 EU member states continued to supply it with 346 million euro’s worth of military equipment, 44% of which came from France and 35% from Germany, a March 17 report by the independent European news agency Investigate Europe found, reported The Telegraph.

The other countries were Italy, Austria, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Finland, Spain and Croatia.

Munchies for the wedding cake? Perhaps. Genius Award Winners.

APRIL 20--A Florida bride and a caterer are facing felony charges for allegedly adding marijuana to food served to wedding guests, many of whom fell ill after unknowingly ingesting the cannabis-laced dishes served at a February reception.

According to police, “numerous guests” were treated “for symptoms consistent with that of someone who had used illegal drugs.” The victims were stricken in the clubhouse of a private gated community in Longwood, a city 15 miles north of Orlando.

Newlywed Danya Svoboda, 42, and caterer Joycelyn Bryant, 31, have been hit with negligence, tampering, and drug charges for allegedly spiking food served at the February 19 reception, which was attended by about 50 guests.

As alleged in an arrest warrant affidavit, victims became ill after consuming pasta, salad, and an olive oil and herb dip. Several guests were treated at a local hospital, where tests revealed THC in their systems.

One guest told cops he felt “ill and high” and was “having crazy thoughts” as his heart raced. Another victim said he told the best man that he “felt like he had been drugged,” but that the best man “was incoherent and could not answer a question.”

Also, don't those electric vehicles have to be charged? California regularly has problems with brownouts due to not enough electricity. Last summer Michigan came up with policies to get people to cut their electric usage because of fear of brownouts. The Roadkill guys did a build where they put a small block V8 engine with a supercharger on a trailer and ducted the output from the supercharger to the engine in the tow vehicle. You could do something similar, except have the engine on the trailer drive a generator, with the generator output running to the electric tow vehicle.

140 Soros DA Chesa Boudin in San Francisco is going to get voted out of office in a recall election in a couple of months, because he is generally hated.

In a desperate attempt to get votes, Chesa is going after a scam that has been going on for decades in San Francisco.

Unscrupulous lawyers target businesses, particularly Asian businesses where the owners don't speak English very well, and send in a disabled person who has the Americans With Disabilities Act regulations memorized, who documents every trivial "violation" of ADA regs in the business. The lawyer then sends a threatening letter to the business threatening it with ruinous fines under ADA, unless the business ponies up thousands of dollars to the lawyer.

Again, this has been going on for decades, and the San Francisco political and legal establishment has been perfectly comfortable with an extortion racket targeting Asian businesses, since Asian businesses don't have any political clout.

But now Chesa will fix it.

Thanks to George H.W. Bush, Bob Dole, and these rest of "bipartisan" Washington for getting this law passed.

As I recall from reading the book, they were blowing up air mattresses to sleep on and Thesiger commented "you must be a couple of pansies".

No shit???? I refer you to GM's bankruptcy of 2010 or so; union members were kept whole, while everyone else (white collar workers, owners, bondholders et al) got royally fucked in the ass by TFG and GM and the courts. Illegally, I might add.

What puzzles me to this day is why ANYONE would buy a new GM vehicle. It's like trusting a rabid pitbull on a skinny leash held by a 3 year old. Yo! Doh!

Let's just play with some simple numbers, rough shit from Tesla's typical crap. The big battery has a capacity of 100kWh for a range of about 300 miles (about, depending on all sorts of factors). There are smaller batteries, varying from 50 kWh, for about 150 mile range to 90kWh.

You want to charge up a 100kWh battery in 10 hours? That's a load of 10kW for 10 hours. For a 50kWh, that's 5 kW for 10 hours.

At that assuming 100% efficiency. Ain't so. For fast charging, efficiency is about 50%. For slow charging, maybe high 60s.

So, maybe double the power requirments. Charging one of things at any reasonable rate is like running an electric dryer or two all night long.

Likely. But to me that is like choosing between the corrupt and evil and the more corrupt and evil. They both are cesspools of scum.

This is not an indictment of the people of either country just the reality of they leadership. It's like judging the US because Biden is technically in charge.

And I'm still going to favor Russia crushing the Tiger Beat president of a corrupt country that fucked with our 2016 election. I'm just astonished that this has been going on for so long - in the 1990's, I was reading about one lawyer in SF who had made a business out of this. He used one guy in a wheelchair who would precisely measure the bathroom in a restaurant, say, note that something was two inches shorter than the ADA standard, and the lawyer would then demand thousands of dollars.

Amazing that this racket is still around.

Amazing that this racket is still around.

With a vent stack, also riddled, that seemingly ends in the attic. Doh! Vanity will get new tailpiece, P-trap, and inch and a quarter PVC drain to existing PVC line, no vent. Politics is downstream from culture but culture is downstream from our kids. And we are finally fighting and winning this fight.

The Admiralty representative:

"What do you mean, do? We didn't do anything with the nukes on the ships."

461 For really off the wall World War II history

A German U-boat surrendered to a wooden sail powered Royal Navy frigate. Except the frigate never went into service, had no sails or masts, and was docked at Dundee.

I give you HMS Unicorn which was launched in 1817 and promptly put in reserves because the Napoleonic Wars were over and the RN figured it best to keep a brand new ship in reserves during this peace draw down so when the older ships retire it can be put in service. Then the technology changed and thus the ship never was fitted with masts or went to sea.

At the end of the war, a U-boat entered Dundee and surrendered to the first ship flying the white ensign of the Royal Navy, HMS Unicorn.

the radio stations used to use live performances and studio musicians because the record companies would not allow the stations to play the records on the air. It was considered at the time a guarantee for musicians to have a job. Technology always changes things.

I do have a question, though. If the rules had not changed, what should have been done about people ripping copies and sharing them illegally? How would the old rules be enforced in the face of the highest quality, infinitely reproducible media?

It was de facto. There was Napster and Limewire and other sharing sites.
I think there was legal action, which led to the Digital Rights legislation.

Key knowledge point. Buy a 2003 or later. Major suspension redesign, and the '03 mimiced a Mercedes Benz multilink setup. The handling.. improved.

With proper maintenance, all of 'em are 250,000 mile cars.

545 Mechanicals are mostly the same between Vic, GM and Townie. The later police Vics have a slightly different tune so 250 hp instead of 239, but these aren't the sort of cars where you really care about the 11 hp..There is also a Maruader that used the 3V version for more hp, but they didn't make many and the nice ones are already overpriced cult cars. The Townie has the rear air suspension, which holds up well and is pretty simple and not expensive to fix. Otherwise the mechanics are the same. I have all three and the Townie is the best IMHO. More room and better ride cause the wheelbase is a couple inches longer. More insulation so quieter. Handling and acceleration is the same for non-racing purposes. On a limited sample.size it does seem like the Lincoln may have been assembled more carefully. But the key thing is that the Townie FEELS like a luxury car, and the other two don't. But you don't have to put up with the expensive engineering and repair\parts cost that you usually have to with luxury cars.

Impact fuze, for the WWI variety. Proximity fuze, if you're into Top Secret WWII tech. Now? Electronically signaled airbursts triggered either by known range settings, or sensors to read out after "cover" is cleared.

Crude version? Simple cannon fuze, cut to precise lengths to match trajectories and time in flight of solidly documented projectile flight arcs and times. Shit ain't hard to DO. It's hard to do WELL.

A philosophical question with no answer, akin to 'How many angels can dance on the head of a pin?' Easier to ask 'How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop?'

An example: Biden's been a liar his whole political career, probably his whole life. In 1988, he was forced out of the presidential primaries for being a liar and a plagiarist. Now he's the damn president. What changed? Because it certainly isn't Joe Biden.

So far, despite the often too-dim lighting, it seems like a well-done adaptation with good casting. The scene where the Duke and his men rescue the spice workers from a giant sandworm was awe-inspiring.

I didn't mind having a woman play the Imperial Ecologist Kynes; the character was not a central figure in the first book (I think). It's not like they switched Paul for a young girl. The film seems to capture a lot of the flavor I recall from the novel.

574 Someone once remarked that driving a Town Car was like riding down the road in your living room.

Which makes perfect sense, why would you run 6-800 miles in a kidney killer? I always loved driving them when our dealership sent us off to school.

Sports and sporty-ish cars have their place. But driving long distances on bad roads is not their place. It's hard to find a car nowadays that will isolate you from the road; the car companies all think everyone, like the writers for the car magazines, wants to "feel the road." Maybe where they pave the streets. Not here.

Hell, it's hard to find an actual *car* instead of a truck or SUV.

575 I didn't mind having a woman play the Imperial Ecologist Kynes;

A personal problem, I know, but it pisses me off because it only goes one way. There isn't a single sex or race swap that isn't about hating white males for the sake of hating white males. Kind of like all the interracial couples in tv commercials. Not like I got anything against interracial couples. But I'm tired of assholes trying to program me like a robot.

Oh, I agree. And if they had swapped Paul for Paula, or made the family black, I'd have hated it too. A small role is not a deal-breaker for me.

Imagine the screams from the wokesters if someone were (somehow) to remake the series Roc with all white people.

I detest those sanctimonious unimaginative fvcktards for a simple basic reason. Their sheer fvcking hubris for assuming they know how to make a story better than the person who created it.

We know what the author originally intended.

We're so smart because we circle-jerk tell ourselves that all the time, especially at the Oscars, Emmys and Tonys.

So shut up, because we told you to. Now pay for this $25 movie ticket. And don't forget the $15 popcorn and $10 soda. If you don't like that, there's always the $500 theater ticket and $30 cheap concession drinks.

You're welcome.

(**sigh** These plebes. They're never satisfied.)

585 At least for Amazon, IIANM they HAVE to make like 50% of all characters diverse as a matter of company policy.

Thought experiment: if you had the original LoTR trilogy, but with just as good performances and black dudes or hispanic or arabs substituted for various parts. Same dialogue, same movie essentially, would it still be a problem?

I dunno, because it would never be just that because part of the diversity is LGBTQetcetc inclusion.

By my quick count you have 5 characters who have any sexual identity at all as it relates to the story:
-Aragorn
-Arwen
-Eowyn
-Sam
-Rose
That's it (you might throw in Faramir as he and Eowyn get together after Aragorn heals them of the Black Breath.) So...

Woods is a smart guy. Mamet is a smart guy. I'd bet that they started out liberal, maybe not hard left but liberal. But because they are smart they evolved after seeing so much craziness on 'their side'. You have to have a modicum of intelligence to be self-aware enough to adjust your thinking as new information is processed.

598 A very nice young guy who had visited our church before came back yesterday. He seems to be a perpipathtic (so?) church goer visiting about three different churches in a 10 mile radius . He told me he had dreamed about my name and one of the places he visiited was one of the previous churches which I had served. So far he seems a normal guy so I have no idea about why he's dreaming about my name, but he seems to have an interest in the ministry so maybe I'm supposed to help him with that.

Huh, trying to figure out why, but all of a sudden my suggested is full of either guys melting down jewelry, cleaning drains or making boots? I know where the boot thing came from, I watched a video of some guys in Korea making a custom pair of hiking boots (lot of stitching involved.*)

*Guaranteed to be expensive and why do I get the feeling that no matter how good the boots, they will still kill your feet the first couple of times you wear them?
