I'm bringing this over from yesterday's tech thread in case Catherine (willowed) shows up here today:
180 172 Anyone else having an issue with the "continue reading" link going to archives in a new window, along with taking the old window to a weird advertisement when you go back? It's never done that to me before . . . Posted by: Catherine at April 20, 2022 07:31 AM (ZSsrh) My guess is: Your cursor isn't really over the "continue reading" link when you're clicking. The page might not be fully loaded when you're clicking. When you hover your cursor over the red "continue reading" link, be sure the "continue reading" link gets underlined; then click. There's plenty of marmots about -- what's the problem? Posted by: Krebs v Carnot: Epic Battle of the Cycling Stars at April 21, 2022 04:39 AM (pNxlR) 15
And the morning and the evening were the Thursday. Hello, all! I was going to get up to exercise today, but I guess I needed to catch up on sleep more. And today will be a long one; I'm ging to my writing group meeting tonight. Then one more day, and . . .
. . . horror has a new name. Miss Linda wants to go to the Earth Day clothing sale at the Buffalo Exchange in the city on Saturday morning. That's the last thing I feel like doing even on a good day, and this Saturday will be (a) haircut day, (b) hot and humid, (c) there's no place to park. And did I mention hot and humid? I can drop her off, go to one of the libraries, and come back in an hour, but I still hate the idea. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius at April 21, 2022 04:39 AM (c6xtn) 16

---- I grew up with it and cannot imagine not having the stuff around. It is very salty so must be spread very, very thinly and this is the mistake most people make. It is not PNB! If you are trying it, use a plain cracker or a slice of bread, fresh or toasted. Put some butter or marge on it and then spread in just a tiny bit of Marmite. As with most foods being tried for the first time, do this when hungry. If making many sandwiches it is usual to mix the butter/marge and Marmite in a bowl in bulk and then spread the mixture. It's been so long since I've played a video game...or rather an up to date one, as I sometimes play on a private FF11 server, that I assumed laptops were kind of on par with consoles. I mean back when i did play consoles were good, but computers were still far better it seemed, as Xboxes and PS3s should lag and overheat. I played the Elder Scrolls online demo on my 2011 Macbook and that worked better than Skyrim on my PS3. I guess I don't know the joy of playing the same 3 hack and slash, or FPS game with a million different skins and titles at 600 Frames per second.
Speaking of slow, I just downloaded GIMP since i don't feel like paying monthly (or ever) for Photoshop, and I'm not sure i want to risk a piratebay version on my newer Mac, and boy it's laggy compared to PS, but pretty similar, which is great for free. This is what happens when open source zealots are allowed to run an actual company. It's not an accident that Microsoft's quality nose-dive in Azure has coincided with their attempts to cater to the open source community by hiring a ton of them. What concerns me is that they've largely abandoned Azure DevOps in favour of GitHub Enterprise, but if they're going to pull this kind of poorly-thought-out ideological crap I'm going to be taking a second look at migrating. For all the Anime nerds of the tech thread. Was just reading Netflix is making a Live Action Sword Art Online, and the only info is "their committed to caring asians in the lead roles" so you know this will be another Cowboy Bebop style shitfest, where they just pander to crybabies and make an awful show, since checking diversity boxes is more important than writing a good show.
Also Cartoon Network is making another 2 shitty versions of FLCL, called Grunge and Shoegaze. The art style looks awful, and it's the same team that made the last 2 shit installments (i.e. no once from the original) so it will just be rehashed jokes made unfunny, no storyline, and idea that all people want is wackiness and pedophilia. Our son ordered a jar of marmite and vegamite from Amazon. I think he said both were mentioned in songs, or by musicians and no, I don't think the vegamite reference came from " Land down under." Some Beatle made a reference to eating Marmite. Anyway, he had sandwiches using both and the stuff smelled disgusting. Both bottles are now in the fridge.

It makes sense. With this new mutant injection the body is probably reacting to it like it does steroids. When you take steroids your body decides it doesn't need to make testosterone, and after a period of use your body completely stops making it, leaving you needing a synthetic replacement for life. This new injection is making your body go "nope, don't gotta produce antibodies" and then the protection from the injection wears off in a few months, so now your body can't produce its own antibodies to the flu, and why people need boosters every 2 months now (and why people who never got the flu, or had covid symptoms, addre suddenly getting the flu and covid even though this strain is weaker). Hopefully after a period off this prophylactic everyone's body will be able to return to its normal natural function of protecting itself. Posted by: Rbastid at April 21, 2022 05:42 AM (vrYal) 84

Well that was how the media and doctors could lie about Hydroclohohorotobd (better than trying to spell it) They scream HydroC doesn't work, because of one study that was made to fail, as they just administered HydroC to patients who were already hours from death. The media, politicans and scum doctors on pharma payroles used this study to justify being against it when in reality they were because EvilTrump, or they were financially invested in it not working. HydroC just acts as a receptor booster, the thing killing the virus was Zinc, HydroC allowed it to work much more efficiently. But they kept leaving that part out, because then everyone could just take that regimen if they got sick. Just recently they even had a show on NHK World that talked about how doctors in Japan studied the HydroC+Zinc combo and how well it worked on elderly patients. Been an Insteon user since the beginning. It was (is) a good system, but the company was circling the drain for awhile. So not a surprise they're gone, though the way they pulled the plug on their cloud powered Hubs without warning was surprising. And they were email spamming me up to the end about clearance sales on devices; fortunately almost everything was out of stock (hint hint).
But, my devices still function. The thing I liked about Insteon was its locally controllability and reliability. They later introduced their Hub which made it easier for casual home automation. Open-source Home Assistant as well as other applications provide life to the system which I control on local resources. So at least there's time to investigate suitable replacements. That's crazy news about Github, thanks for letting us know.

So, a major tech provider just Up-And-Outs, removing their service entirely AND making all the devices that used said service nigh-worthless until some group figures out how to reverse-engineer the damn things.
Wonder if they had a major hack/attack, to the point that their own servers/equipment were destroyed with no backups. So they just went and nope'd out. Going to be a legal nightmare, I bet. And just think about big services you rely on, especially business-wise. What happens if a major service provider, particularly cloud-based, suddenly goes under with literally no warning? What about your data (and backups), which were based on those services (and now are unreachable)? How about blockchain? It's supposed to be distributed, but several major ones have already been shown to be centralized, even to the point of 'forking' the chain prior to some weird/criminal trades/thefts and starting over from that point. If the main group 'hosting' the chain and doing all the management work suddenly disappears, what then? The data is there, but going forward will probably be a hydra of offshoots as 15 different groups try to pick it up and be the head of it. I work in this space. The answer is to evaluate the risk of that happening and the potential business impact, and that sets your budget for distributing your servers across multiple cloud services or data centers. I know of businesses that have duplicate infrastructures in AWS, Azure, and a couple of third-tier cloud providers just in case. Posted by: Daniel Ream at April 21, 2022 02:16 PM (ArYuy) 179
GitHub is what happens when a bunch of middling-to-terrible script kiddies LARPing as coders fail to get enough asspats because at best their contribs are already done better by competent coders, and as a result add LARPing as women to their preexisting play-pretendy games to get those vital asspats.
Unfortunately, it worked: enough thirsty NuMales were so desperate for female attention that they decided to go with terrible bootlegs, gave these narcissistic dopamine junkies their fix, and then put them in charge of projects based on the amount of asspats they got. So many of them infested GitHub not because of their skill or commitment, but just asspat numbers alone. Turns out this isn't such a good idea when you need people in charge who can code at least well enough not to irrevocably break shit.
