The original Fox body was a direct derivative of the Ford Fairmont.
Same cowl, same windshield, same dashboard & steering wheel. Front end was the same, under the outer-fender & bumper panels. Body pan was shortened behind the front seats to make it a coupe. Otherwise? The car was a stylized Fairmont. Just as the 1964-1/2 Mustang was a stylized Falcon. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at April 15, 2022 10:11 PM (QzJWU) 24

Hess was famously held for decades at Spandau prison. One interesting anecdote, every year there was a formal question to the 4 powers (US, Soviets, Brits, French, iirc) involved whether he should be released or not. Everybody always said "yes". Except, the Soviets. It required everybody to agree. So he remained locked up.
Then one year the Soviets held up their vote or said "Yes"... And the Brits in turn, said "No". Something something about dirty secrets. Always wondered about the Hess flight, and who was involved, and whether it was officially sanctioned or not. It was a pretty big deal at the time, the #2 not see goes awol. Hess almost certainly thought he was going to meet some member of the Royal Family. Maybe there had even been communication; this would be the only reason that Churchill insisted that Hess never be allowed to talk to anyone, and never be released. It's now widely accepted that abdicated King Edward VIII was very pro-Hitler, no doubt he still had secret allies in the British government.

The problem with car comparisons is somebody always takes it too seriously and sucks the fun out of it.. Tonight, that somebody is me. Here's the deal with Foxbodies from a guy who's raced and worked on em for 30 years: They weren't just pretty quick. A stock 5.0 5speed coupe with no a/c would crank 13.60s with a good driver. That's stock hemicuda territory. Modded? Sky's the limit. Stock block cars have 150 mph in the quarter. R302 block minitub cars with stock suspension and inline valve, 20-degree heads have been over 200. Foxbodies had their own racing sanctions, their own Shootout series. There were hundreds of shops all over the country and dozens of companies dedicated to the foxbody/sbf combination. Never before or since has there been hundreds of millions of dollars in industry centered around a single chassis/engine combo like that. It was an utterly unique phenomenon that you'll never see repeated.

My 94 yr old father (who is not exactly hitting on all eight cylinders, but still has more cognitive function than Brandon) tripped us out tonight. I got at the table to get him to take his night pills. When he's finished I ask him he wants a little snack. Nope. But then there's a piece of apple they had cut earlier, and I show him that. He grabs it. He likes salt on apples. Rather than leaving the apple piece in the plate and salting it there, he picks it up in his left hand, then grabs the salt shaker with his right, and proceeds to shake salt all over everything. He covered his side of the table with salt grains. Miley was on the other, side, she and I look at him incredulously, and he looks up sort of, "What?" Doubtless, and the Texas DPS used the 5.0 LX to great effect. The Fox was the last vestige of the Big Three turning out a production car bereft of the huge mass, weight and bulk to meet current, or even 1 generation old, collision and rollover standards. It's a featherweight in today's world. But, like it or not, it did start life from the Fairmont platform, 'cause that's just how Ford things were DONE, then. Camaro/Firebird IIRC, were their own platforms, but most of the Mopar performance stuff, like Ford, also derived from some pretty pedestrian origins. Posted by: Clutch at April 15, 2022 10:44 PM (iO0IT) Clutch, I don't think that's quite right. The Lincoln LS shared platforms with the last derivative of the Ford Thunderbird. Identical dashboards, Independent Rear Suspensions, 3.8 l small V-8s. The recently deceased Lincoln Continental used the current Mustang's IRS setup, but was on an "own design" pan, which was engineered to be any configuration of Rear Wheel Drive/Front Wheel Drive/All Wheel drive. Grand idea, TINY ass trunk (too small for 4 passengers' worth of luggage!), and too small an interior for a "full size luxury car". Now? FoMoCo makes the Mustang as it's ONLY car, and every other platform is an SUV of one kind or another. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at April 15, 2022 11:03 PM (QzJWU) 160

Jim-
Absolutely, they're all Fairmonts under the skin. But, a professional chassis builder said to me once that the Fox was the best drag race platform that ever rolled out of Detroit. He didn't mean that it couldn't be improved on, of course, or that custom stuff wasn't superior. But if you set out to design the best drag race chassis that you could mass produce on an assembly line as cheaply as possible, you'd design the Fox. Everything about it, the weight, the wheelbase, the overhang, just flat works in a straight line. It's how these cars can lay beatings on stuff with way more power. I've been mid-10s with only around 375 hp to the tire. Funny part is, it was all accidental. When Ford designed these, drag racing was the last thing on their mind. Just a fortuitous twist of history. Posted by: old5.0 at April 15, 2022 11:04 PM (8l6wZ) 163

One clear mistake Putin made is how the propaganda war would go.
Presumably based on 2014 he presumed Biden would do nothing, but since he got his 10% he has been giving the Ukes aid and lent them the full propaganda arm of the US government. Churchill was considering entering the Winter War on the Finnish side when the Germans invaded France. In 1940 the allies believed the Russian army was weak (true) and that they had a significant superiority over the Germans (false) so opening a two front war was...possible. Mom was the oldest child and her story was that Grandpa was entertaining a rather fussy older relative from out of town while Grandma was pregnant and mentioned the predicted birth date, and the fussy older relative expressed that she thought that was wonderful and biblical, and what would the child be named. Grandfather, being himself, told her that he was thinking of naming the child "Resurrection"
Years later she visited again, and on seeing my uncle Paul, then about 5 years old, she gushed, "this must be little Resurrection!" which caused some consternation on all sides. As fast as I've ever been in car was a 68 Roadrunner, and it was not fun. Everything shook, the back end sashayed, and you could smell rubber burning.
None the 1st-gen pony cars were engineered to even hold up a big block engine. GM gave Ford a 2-year head start, so the first Camaros were marginally more able to carry their powerplant than the Mustang. Muscle cars were a much newer idea then, and the pony cars were emphatically not muscle cars. Midsize semi-compacts that were NOT pony-cars were the usual choice for putting way too much motor in, and that's why GTO owners looked down on Mustangs and their 'ilk.' When Ford unitized the Fairlane (then put a 427 in it!) they made a lot of enemies. "Just a big Mustang," and they'd bend. Posted by: Stringer Davis at April 16, 2022 12:25 AM (videA) 348

I always felt the Fox body Mustang wasn't really the same kind of car as the concurrent Camaro. The Fox body was more like if GM had dropped the F body in about 1974 and then rebodied the Monza when performance started to come back in the 80s and called it a Camaro. And the Torinos rusted super fast and kids preferred the GM muscle cars and would tolerate Mopars. Now of course the Torinos are almost more appealing than either because much fewer survived and they are more interesting.

Buick did whatever they had to, to keep the Riviera as "the quickest car in America." Pontiac and Olds also had huge cruisers with all the power in the world, but (I'm pretty sure) the top Riv had TWO 4-barrels. Now, pony cars were fun and pleasant drivers, even with a six. They absolutely drove cute sports cars out of business. You could "learn to drive" on them, shifting, apex points, braking, drifting, but they wouldn't outrun the big cars or the GTO-class midsize coupes off the line. Of course, the later pony cars became muscle cars, and the whole idea of "sporty" driving changed.

Posted by: Skip at April 16, 2022 12:31 AM (2JoB Hey now. Eggs is eggs. I even like the large red/orange salmon roe on certain types of sushi and well as the little black/grey roe. But caviar is a real special treat because . . . pricey. You get those little Pepperidge Farm Party Bread loaves, with that two or so inch slice, lightly butter then toast it, top with caviar and some finely minced shallot. Add a glass of decent (read: Real) champagne, not the stuff that can only call itself 'methode champagnoise', and you have yourself a royal treat. The French may be pains in the ass politically, but they make great champagne, burgundies and brandy (including its subcategory cognac). This reminds me of being stationed at Schofield Barracks in early 1988. My plan on joining the Army to get away from Hawaii was foiled...for good reason. Year later, eldest daughter was born. Posted by: SMH at God's grace at April 16, 2022 02:39 AM (39+0L) 468

Learned about those here in southern IL.
They're no joke. Posted by: SMH at God's grace at April 16, 2022 12:20 AM (39+0L) Encountered one in Alberta, on July 1, a few years ago. I was driving north on a secondary highway in a 3-ton truck with an empty box van on the back, a moving truck. Just ahead of me, I saw a row of poplar trees laid over like a giant plow had hit them. I gripped the steering wheel with a death grip, and said, "Oh, Fuck!", and then the wind hit. Truck nearly went into the right side ditch, ass end first. I steered right, and punched the throttle, and wound up heading for the left ditch. Corrected several times more, and got it under control again. Stopped at Acme, and got some gas. Made it home, and mile south of my house, I met a wild-eyed guy standing by a Honda that had run out of gas. He was babbling about a tornado. Drove him to my place, picked up a Jerry can of gas, and drove him back to his car, and sent him on his way. Same storm killed several people at a music festival in Big Valley. Just got through watching my recording of Tucker. He was giving short clips of all the new documentaries he was doing. Just learned this. JFK, launching some physical fitness thing, said the following: "There is nothing, I think, more unfortunate than to have soft, chubby, fat-looking children who go to watch their school play basketball every Saturday and regard that as their week's exercise." Can you imagine? Just imagine if Trump said that. Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at April 16, 2022 02:58 AM (Mzdiz) 478

Posted by: SMH at God's grace at April 16, 2022 02:51 AM (39+0L) We hit a mini tornado, or the very frigging edge of a normal one out in sturgis one year. Slamming about 70mph in a group of harleys, at night, real dark, and this frigging wind came out of nowhere. It blew some chick on a sportster into the ditch on the side of the highway, and brought us from 70mph down to 20mph almost instantly. It was a straight on frontal wind that was almost like hitting a wall. The girl in the ditch was ok, she got lucky. Talk about pucker factor, we were in the middle of nowhere. And Pogo the dog was riding shotgun with me. She was fine. My house and grounds suffered no real damage. But nearby grain bins were destroyed, and a big antenna tower on a wellsite was crumpled. That same truck, from my previous post had a very funny story associated with it. Two friends from the car club had volunteered to fetch the truck from another club member who had donated it to the club for storage. It was a 1970 Chevy 3-ton with a 454 in it; very weatherbeaten, but the engine ran well on 7 cylinders. Fuel tank was clogged with crud. So Larry puts a jerry can on the roof, with a siphon hose gravity feeding to the carb. Jerry can tied down with a ratchet strap. Larry is driving along, 45 miles an hour, happy as a clam. The loose end of the ratchet strap fall down behind the cab, and gets caught up in the drive shaft. Suddenly, the roof of the cab caves in. Then the ratchet strap breaks, and the roof rebounds, launching the jerry can in a high arc over the van body, and it lands in the road in front of Kevin, following in a pickup. The 3-tons stops because it runs out of gas. Larry gets out, and asks Kevin, "What happened?" and Kevin can't answer for several minutes because he is laughing too hard.

Story about a guy around here. He straddled a rotating PTO shaft on his tractor for some reason. This was before shields were mandatory. Shaft caught his pants. Ripped his balls right off. Another freak drive-shaft accident that happened around here. Woman was driving down the road. Front u-joint broke, dropping the shaft. It jobbed into the road, and a pole-vaulted the rear end of the vehicle, causing the car to flip end-over-end. Several times. She was DRT when they got to her.
