van Dyck christ cross.jpg

Christ with the Cross
Anthony van Dyck

There are so many incredible versions of Christ that it is impossible to choose one that is representative of Good Friday.

This version of Christ is personal and very human...exactly what I would expect from van Dyck...one of the masters!

They are evil and will regret their decision to deny the existence of their soul.

33 Good choice for today. But I have a question. When is this supposed to be set? There is a hole in Jesus' left hand, suggesting that this is after the Crucifixion. However, the cross He is cradling suggests it is before, when He was lugging the cross (or just its upright) to Golgotha.

The dried blood would be cleaned away but the marks of the lash would still be there. Unless we are told his skin was healed at His Resurrection (except for the nail holes in the hands, of course). Historians and anatomists have weighed in, saying the Romans would have driven the nails through the wrists rather than the palms -- the bones of the latter wouldn't support the body weight of the victim, even with the feet nailed in place. Or perhaps the writhing of the victim would have torn the hands loose. The Romans were expert in this sort of thing and wouldn't have wanted the criminal to die too soon. This is not to deny the story as a whole, of course.

135 This time of year, for some of us, we recognize that we have been presented with the Truth, Justice, and Amelioration in a once in a lifetime chance for all of us to gaze upon it, admit the consequences of of our actions, and accept the solution.

Many of us see this as a great unburdening, the solution for everything we could not express verbally, but knew intuitively, a sense of relief to lay bare our own mistakes that we have tried so desperately to cope with and hide from the world, and to come to peace and reconciliation with the plumb line, though we may yet waver.

But for those that believe and believed that they have the tiger by its tail and that justice will not come, that objective, all-encompassing truth is the most fearful of all things, that justice must be denied at all costs, lest the power that they have accumulated for themselves be brought to nothingness. And when the Truth comes, the era of personal autonomy and control will be destroyed.

136 To the rulers of the world, the most fearful reality they must accept is that this Truth is returning and returning soon, that it can not be controlled or defeated, and that it will mete out Justice when it does, and that when the reckoning comes, there will no longer be for them a chance for redemption. So they scurry about in a panic trying to prepare for this return, mustering defenses and endeavoring to stamp out any dissenting voice that speaks of it, for even a whisper of the Truth signals their end.

That is the power you have, your power is given from Truth and you wield it not for your own ends, but out of loyalty to the source and for the betterment and freedom of the world.

There is a serious poem by Dorothy Parker which implies that Mary *knew all along* what the outcome of her son's life would be: "And oh, her heart was like to break/To count another year."

That poem and her "The Maidservant at the Inn" belie Dottie's rep as merely a wisecrack artist in life, in prose, and in poetry. She had more talent than just that.

Thank you for choosing today's painting. It really shows the son of God and the son of man. And he shows Christ as a hearty figure, not the emaciated creature so often portrayed. His gaze at the viewer is direct, almost challenging, reminding the viewer that as He is renewed so to can be mankind.

From my go-to, The Life Of Jesus Christ from the Visions of the Venerable Anne Catherine Emmerich:
The cross was somewhat rounded in the back, but flat in the front, and hollowed out in necessary places. The several pieces of which the cross was formed were of different colored wood: some brown, some yellow, then trunk darker than the rest, like wood that had lain a long time in water. The crosses of the thieves were rougher.

Yet Christ's sacrifice was in the end a beautiful act of creation and salvation for all of us. Much of the art depicting the crucifixion (like today's picture) is a pale reflection of that beautiful sacrifice.

259 For me, one of the most striking memories of Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ was the final scene, where light shines through the gaping wound in His hand. These would have been much more significant than just abrasions or scars as they appear in this painting.

Thomas "put [his] finger into the print of the nails, and thrust [his] hand into [Jesus'] side." (John 20:25)

When witnesses saw these marks, it would have been clear to them that this Man had suffered horrific violence, and should have been dead by any measure. There was no natural way that He could have been up and walking around.

Center mass, so you don't miss. If you get a clear easy shot, the head, because even a .22 will kill someone there. But its easy to miss the head since its not very big and moves around a lot.
Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at April 15, 2022 10:32 AM (KZzsI)

Center mass is where you start, head shot if clear, but then a few rounds in the hip area, for immobilization!

On a serious note, Mr. Taylor's response above seems right. I. Addition to that I wonder... the skull is pretty thick (well, mine is). I'd have to think that some small fraction of .22 head shots will end up not penetrating the skull at all. One more vote for center mass.

The only thing you're not allowed to say is whatever goes against the narrative of the WEF and their puppet governments, organizations, etc. It's not about truth or facts or anything else. It's about power and control. And whatever needs to be censored or pushed in order to keep that power and control.

In summer 2020, anything against Biden was censored, because Biden was the puppet the WEF wanted in charge of the USA. As such, the Hunter Biden stuff had to be suppressed. When the WEF wants Biden gone, then they will allow certain things to be pushed which will suit their agenda to remove Biden. Things that will be used as an excuse to remove him. Things that were previously censored.

It's all about power and control and whatever suits their narrative at any point in time. They did the same thing with SARS-CoV-2/COVID.

I am not sure what was driving Sully to that. I mean, maybe he just hated Mel Gibson that much - I don't recall what part of the culture war that was.

We watched it Sunday and to call the violence and injury inflicted on Christ as pornographic - well, no. It wasn't, not all. It was graphic, for sure. It was painful to watch, to see that done to any man. But that it is being done to the Son of God? To God himself? It is sad. What wretches we are, that we could do that.

And then you turn on the news or flip through Twitter, you just go, we have learned nothing.

322 I made a comment the other day about being wholly dispensible, based on the horde mind. I think Muldoon thought it indicated a need for a welfare check, but I meant it the opposite. It's nice to be around people who really see. Glenn Greenwald and Molly are making points today I made yesterday about pro censorship masks coming off- this is good. Love today's painting- that's the truly indispensable man, without whom, I believe, we are lost.

326 And yes, some churches will be allowed to stay open: the ones that aren't churches any more. The ones that teach rainbow false diversity and push the left's agenda, the ones that teach the Bible contains some truth and its up to you to decide. The ones that teach Jesus was a good teacher but not God. The ones that condemn actual Biblical teaching. Like that one that gave up "white" written liturgy and music for lent.

335 I was in an evening Bible study group at my church. One guy, probably about 60, piped up at one point that he thought that anyone who is devout, no matter the religion, would be saved (i.e.: a good Hindu person or Shinto, etc.)

I disagreed, naturally, and asked him "What about a devout satanist?"

It made him rethink his position.

337 When I worked at a packing plant we had a Brama bull jump a 6 foot fence and got loose running around the whole plant property. I had a 30-30 with one fucking round. He never stopped. I had to take a running shot at 25 yards. Hit him just back of the jaw in the neck. He went down with blood squirting 10 feet from the artery. When they went to fetch him with a front end loader he got up. Took 6 more rounds in the head from a .38 to put him back down. We had another one coming in to be processed. We shot him in the trailer.

358 My mother, a splinter group 7th Day Adventist, considered Sunday worship to be the Mark of the Beast (particularly if it was Catholics doing the Sunday worshipping). Her argument was that the Bible says Jesus was dead for three days and from Friday to Sunday is only two days. She didn't know that the Romans counted days inclusively making it three days. (The Romans, brilliant in many ways, couldn't calendar for shit.)

Posted by: blaster at April 15, 2022 10:48 AM (9otr5)

Sorta. We did learn better along the way. Social media created a major reversion to the mean in human relations. We had a made a lot of progress over prior centuries, in terms of how we interact and learn from one another, but social media wiped all of that away in a flash. We've gone way, way backward in a very short time.

We just managed to digitize ignorance, bigotry and hatred. It's a fascinating process of backsliding into primitive societies. I expect in the (distant) future, social media will be considered a destructive artefact of the past, like slavery or human sacrifice.

You're going to have to admit if you are a human being that you do the same thing. "My sins are small change, but I'm not like those guys. So I'll keep doing my sins, they're really more like suggestions, amiright?"

The one little phrase bible buffet so accurately sums up the parable of the pharisees, the mote in the eye and the need for grace all at once.

Anyone who comes to the Father does so through his Son.

Exactly *How* that happens is between the Father, the Son, and the anyone in question. I take it as a tenet of faith, and a natural consequence of the benevolence of the Creator i believe in, that He isn't going to be chucking perfectly good souls into perdition purely out of peevishness.

G-d judges righteously.

He measured the water for the earth in the palm of His hand...Heaven is His throne, earth is His footstool, the heavens declare His glory...He calls the stars by their names, and inhabits eternity past and future.

He said, "It is appointed unto Man once to die, and then comes the judgement."

I dunno...I'm pretty sure He's able to handle it.

Once upon a time, two young infantrymen were having the age old discussion about how to dispose those who would oppose them. One was a head shooter, the other a center-mass (torso) kind of guy. The head-shooter argued one and done; the other for the larger target area.

As they went back and forth, their Platoon Sergeant came by. Put. Head asked "Hey, Sarge, where do you like to shoot the bad guys? "In the back", the Sergeant
replied.

373 365 >>And those people who have not heard the word of the Lord?

I take great comfort in the knowledge that there was a guy hanging on the cross next to Jesus, to whom Jesus turned and said: "Today, you will be with me in Paradise."

He was a thief, condemned for his crime. His great act of righteousness was rebuking others for hurling insults at Jesus as he hung there. "He has done nothing wrong!" And he turned to Christ and said, "Remember me when you come into your kingdom."

That was it. No years of service. No demonstration of a perfect life. No unassailable theology. Just a heart that was inclined to righteousness. God is a good judge, inclined to mercy.

And what's more: when the Son of God refers to the Great Beyond as "paradise," you can bet your bippy it's not going to be floating on clouds with harps, forever. It will be better than anything imaginable.
