26 Mornin', all!

Oddity: There's a 1934 John Wayne pic on Grit right now, called Blue Steel. It's in color, which I'd have thought a B-movie Western at that time wouldn't have had the budget for. It was probably colorized later. The other strange thing is that somehow JW's vice looks dubbed. It sounds like him, an early version of his drawl, and it matches his lip movements, but it *looks* dubbed.

Anyway! What's happening today?

(Actually the denizens of that area would not uptalk. They'd sound quite a bit different, like "Whatchoo lookin' at?")

38 Wolfus, the movie Blue Steel.

The failure of the original copyright holder to renew the film's copyright resulted in it falling into public domain, meaning that virtually anyone could duplicate and sell a VHS/DVD copy of the film. Therefore, many of the versions of this film available on the market are either severely (and usually badly) edited and/or of extremely poor quality, having been duped from second- or third-generation (or more) copies of the film.

That could explain the dubbing look.

I have most of those on broadcast TV on my smart TV. The problem with MeTV, Decades, and other "retro" channels is that you have to suffer though endless ads for incontinence products, insurance to supplement your Social Security, walk-in tubs, and HurryCanes.

Grit's only real problem is that it sticks a *lot* of commercials into a movie slot. True Grit, a 2-hour movie, mushrooms into a 2.5-3 hour block. But they do show older Western TV shows like Laramie and Death Valley Days, and older and more recent John Wayne movies too.

47 43 We don't have Grit anymore but do have INSP. Older westerns (lots of Gunsmoke) and movies, usually on weekends only. Grit was far better but Cox decided to drop it in this area. Encore Western provides movies from the 30s on.

49 While a lack of breakfast sausage is certainly regrettable, you can still make gravy without it. Bacon works really well. Or ham. Or even hamburger. The latter is basically SOS. Make a good roux and Bob's Yer Uncle

59 The Heroes & Icons channel first appeared on my (then-cable) radar in about 2016. They ran Man From U.N.C.L.E., for example, though it was at 3 am and they never promoted it in the slightest. Maybe because they were busy promoting the 50th anniversary of Star Trek: TOS and started it that Sept. 8, the actual 50th anniversary of the show's premiere.

Now they run all sorts of things, from all the Trek series and the George Reeves Superman, to Baywatch, Hawaii FiveO, and House.

60 I love half and half - but I mostly drink black coffee these days since I only eat once a day. And sausage gravy with biscuits is pretty rare, too. It is da$@m good though.

I'm testing out a pour over coffee device for possible hiking use. Called a GSI Coffee Rocket. Only $10, needs no filters. This little guy is really slick. As a solo hiker even at home, it makes a strong tasty cup. Great if you don't want to make a whole pot. Not sure why some reviewers say it doesn't work, or is slow. It makes a nice zingy cup, and doesn't waste coffee.

61 The Titanic and her sister vessels were pretty fast ships for the day. Even then it took a week or 10 days to cross the Atlantic, I think. A more leisurely time for sure, and a good one if you had a solid job or inherited money. For the 3rd-class passengers on the ship, not so good.

70 It's tough to envision how much travel cost back in those days. Even a steerage ticket probably cost a bundle.

One thing I gleaned reading about trains, back in the day, a train ticket out West was the equivalent of flying first class these days. The average cowpoke or farmer, no way they could afford it. And since everything was shipped by train, freight rates must have made everything really expensive to buy out on the prarie or Utah or Nevada or whatever.

Clean up days in my area start today. Twice a year the city lets you put out stuff they don't normally pick up. The scavengers were already out yesterday with their trailers.

87 Yeah, it's weird, have never read so many wildly different reviews on a single product, like it isn't even the same device they are reviewing. I used a commercial coffee for the test, since it is ground coarser than usual. It seems to work OK with finer grinds too, and is plenty strong enough. I was wasting a lot of coffee with my usual pour over methods. 2 (strong) cups in the morning is plenty for me usually. Decent coffee in the backcountry has always kind of eluded me, or too much kit to bring along.

I thought she'd made a mistake, as the triple was that price. Nope. I complained that the sign said $2.85. A manager said, "No, we can't keep changing the sign. It's on the screen as you check out." Me: "*After* I check out, which is too late. Just put a sticker on the big board to let us know." She looked irritated. It's a nice-looking place, and very popular. We were there on Christmas Eve last year. And in their defense, they do post the prices of the pastries in the showcase, which so many places don't. But nowadays it's possible to print a nice-looking sign in almost any font and color on sturdy paper and mount it with double-sided tape; they don't have to use Post-Its.

On top of the other annoyances, though, the double espresso was lost in the cardboard cup they gave me. You really feel like you're getting gypped when your beverage doesn't come close to filling the container.

The grill down the street is much more honest about their pricing and much cheaper to boot.

I live about 40 miles from the TV broadcast antennas for my area and I use a Mohu 60 mile range antenna hung on a wall inside my home. This is a very sub optimal setup and I still can receive FOX, CBS, PBS, CW 100% of the time. ABC is atmosphere dependent, and NBC has no signal. This antenna sells for about $80.00 at Best Buy and an identical renamed version sells for $50.00 to $60.00 for a 2 pack at Sam's Club. These are worth trying as you can discover quickly if this antenna will work in your location and if it doesn't work they can be returned. My experience with Mohu antennas is the larger the surface area of the antenna the better the results. With that in mind Mohu also makes a larger version that is rated by them for 75 miles. I have never used it but in my case I suspect it would pull in the marginal or missing stations at a usable level.

As much of a pain as it is to have to change prices (especially now) that is part of their job! It's a big no-no here to charge a higher price than what is marked. Change the price on sign, then in the computer system. If you're a bit delayed at getting the computer part done, at least the customer sees the price it's supposed to be, and they get the break for your delay.

My grandparents made 4 round trips to Europe on those 'big boats'. Not steerage. Yes she was an heiress and yes it was all gone in the Great Depression. She died after working her night shift cleaning a sanitarium asleep in her rocking chair. I was just over a year old.

When I was a kid I figured out one of those tickets cost the equivalent to a new Mustang. The comparison still works.

189 Israeli security forces have, for the second day in a row, carried out large arrest raids in the northern West Bank, targeting the areas where two Palestinian terrorists responsible for deadly terror attacks came from.

During the raids, which began late Saturday night, IDF troops pursued a cell of six Palestinians in the sector of the Menashe Territorial Brigade. The cell was identified after they threw a bag out of a passenger vehicle driving along the seam line. The troops discovered a Carlo submachine gun and a dozen bullets inside the bag.

According to Walla, the cell was able to escape in the direction of the Arab-Israeli town of Umm el-Fahm.

247 177 Clearview makes an antenna that is very good. They make the 'flat' type of antennas. Posted by: AZ deplorable moron

I have used Clearview (aka Antennas Direct) wire cage antennas in the past and they work great. Getting an antenna setup to work depends on distance from the broadcast antennas, having an unobstructed line of site from the home to the broadcast antennas, strength of the broadcast signal and if you live in a city is having the signal getting deflected by buildings. One parameter that is challenging is when the broadcast antennas are not clustered; if your antenna is pointed west and the broadcast antenna is pointed east don't expect miracles. One should also be aware that vendor distance claims are mostly fiction with real world results, for us who don't hang antennas all the time, mostly unknown until the antenna is hung and connected. There are web sites that help minimize the surprising and interesting outcomes before buying an antenna.

Summary: antennas are good and well worth the time needed to sort out which one works at your location and the work to install one.

250 I also saw the graph he posted (Sat?) that showed top twatter accounts (like Buh-rock Obama) and he inferred these mostly inactive accounts with millions and millions of followers were the recipients of mass #'s of bot accounts, which distort everything in the twatterverse. I get the feeling he doesn't approve.

251 Summary: antennas are good and well worth the time needed to sort out which one works at your location and the work to install one.
Posted by: LIS

Yup, there were 2 directv antennas on this place, both are gone now. The mast for one is on the roof apex so when it was removed the OTA went there. The existing cables were all that was needed. We have a clear line of sight from the bottom floor as well as the top; so, reception is very good.

Did you see the tweet he put out saying that everyone who pays some $3/month service should get a blue checkmark? That will drive the twitter elites absolutely crazy if they think any random person can get the same badge of honor they have for being an elite.

Just reading a book on that subject. I think General Milley would approve. The Germans can't get through the Ardennes, no way. Arial photos, don't show much, so I say the Germans are coming through Belgium for sure. I know how to be a General, you don't.

I just bought a ticket on United for a family wedding and the confirmation email says in big letters that masks are still required. I'm thinking of reregistering again, from indie to Democrat, so I can skip the mask. California is a long flight.

I don't know the actual rules or even if there are any but it appears that it's all based on credentials. If you are a somebody you get a blue check, if you are one of the great unwashed you don't.

One last incentive to go down the one time antenna cost rabbit hole is what cable companies charge for the mysterious television broadcast fees. When I moved into my house I had to use Comcast for my internet and out of sheer laziness I opted to add local channels to the mix for an extra $10.00. When I was finally able to nuke Comcast, they were charging me over $100 a month of which 20%+ was for broadcast fees, a fee that is utterly opaque, ever increasing and on top of the $10.00 local channel cost. This is where the cable companies are able to rise prices willy-nilly and still advertise internet access, post initial contract expiration, at a semi competitive rate. They are bastards to the max. Fortunately, CenturyLink upgraded my local junction box and I now get equally fast and rock solid DSL service without the data cap land mine for half the cost.

It is a mystery but there does seem to be some correlation between a person or entity getting a blue check mark and how much Mark Dice mocks them on YouTube.
