The Ace of Spades Pet Thread

Looks like a severe case of empathy to me.

Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Let's enjoy the world of animals and leave the world of politics outside today.

THAT LOVING FELINE Cat owners are seen as better looking and have more sex, research suggests

Meet The PetMorons

Roscoe and Lily.jpg

This is Roscoe and Lily. They are 10 year old siblings. Owner surrendered due to health issues. They are super friendly and Roscoe loves chewing on cardboard. I found that out the hard way. They love love belly rubs and ear scritches and they also love to be right up in your business. I swear I can't get any chores done when they are around! I've tripped over them many times but thankfully no paws were stepped on. They are both in good health and we are hoping to find them a new furever home. It's really difficult to find someone willing to take 2 dogs, let alone 2 as big as these goofballs. -jewells

Good luck finding a home for them jewells. They look adorable.

This is my daughter's cat, Asher, watching me work out from a new vantage point I didn't know he could achieve. We babysit our grandkitty when she and her husband and son go out of town. Asher likes to join in when I do my laps around the house, by lying in wait till his prey comes by, then suddenly swooping past me. I think it must be a bit like taking coup. For my floor exercises, he lies on his back looking winsome, puts his life at risk dodging leg lifts, and/or walks or lies on my head. - Alana.

He certainly seems like an agile cat who will keep you on your toes when exercising. Sounds like he enjoys Grannie's house. Thanks Alana.

We lost our beloved Casey to cancer a few years back. I’m starting to feel like Mr. Bojangles in the old song, “The dog up and died, he up and died. After twenty years he still grieves. “

And I can vouch for his driving—he never once had an accident.

Rulon (longtime lurker and pet admirer)

I bet when Casey wasn't driving he was using that sunroof to hang his head out. Cute photo. Amazing how their memories can stick with us. Thanks for sharing.

20220322_163105.jpg

Holly was my husband's first & only dog. He had to wait because he had been dad to the most jealous Siamese cat ever born, by the name of Bleen. Bleen would never have allowed my husband to give attention to a dog.
Holly was about the sweetest dog ever, and was incredible around sick people. She would be extremely gentle and devote her attention to people who were seriously ill or terminal.
The cat in the pic is Bob, who we took in as a stray but had obviously been the much loved pet of an older person. Had to be cradled like a baby, and have her hands held and massaged. Both are sorely missed.
Also note, neither one was willing to give up an inch of territory once they got comfy. My bed was kinda crowded most nights. - Maureen

Thank you for your contribution today. I bet you would rather have your bed hogged by those cute pets. Thanks for sharing a warm story today.

9 We have a feral cat my youngest daughter rescued that my wife fell in love with so naturally it got adopted.

My beloved Lizzie (our Lab) and this guy became bestest buddies. We lost Liz 2 years ago, and the cat went from basement cat only seen sporadically to constant companion. Not a real cat person but this dumbo has been a joy to have around. I think he misses the dog nearly as much as me.

17 Charlie's story begins with Max, the big black medium-hair feral who had been coming around for food for a few weeks. One day in March of 2011, I saw Big Max walking up as usual, but with a precious little orange kitten at his side. "C'mon, kid, I'll show you where they'll give you some grub. (And you can quit following me around.)" Max looked like a meanie but he was a sweetheart.

When Charlie came in the house, he laid down on the carpet looking like he'd always been here. Our herd of other cats and our dear dog Gimli accepted him immediately. I tried to name him Chuck, because our other male cats were Jack, Spark, and Buck, but he wasn't a Chuck, he was a Charlie.

He was a Godsend for me. Those were troubled days, and hugging a kitten was rare and much-needed relief. He was so dear to us.

18 2/2
Years passed, Charlie grew, the herd thinned, until only Charlie and his adoptive mother Ony remained. So much could be told, but for now I have to conclude.

Tuesday, Mar 29, 2022, at about 12:30pm CST, after several weeks of failing health, mighty hunter, true Godsend, dear companion, and devoted friend, Charlie the golden, breathed his last. We buried him out where so many other dear pets were buried. His grave is marked with yellow daffodils. And tulips.

If there is a rainbow bridge, I can imagine that on the other side, many will be waiting to greet him, including Max, who will tell Charlie, c'mon, kid, I'll show you where you can hang out until your people arrive.

20 Little Kid* Update:

We talked to someone who knows these things and he says the reason Kid isn't drinking from Mom is she is a preemie. Which I believe because she's small, skinny and very wobbly.

So, we've got to milk momma enough each day to get 4 full baby bottles worth, and we're to feed the Kid every four hours with a syringe. Have done that once today to great success and she's doing a little better.

She's adorable.

26 Today is our rescue, Luna's 7-month anniversary of being in her forever home. She still does NOT like other dogs and can get aggressive. We are trying to do progressive approximations to get her used to at least tolerating other dogs. You know, kind of like we do other people.

Today we visited son's family who were camping nearby. There were lots of other dogs at the campground and she had a couple of tests, but Luna did very well in behaving herself and relaxing in a dog-filled environment.

We are cautiously encouraged!

Sorry about Charlie and I'm glad he gave you comfort to hug as a kitten and you enjoyed him-and he you and the Missus-for so long I am aware that if humans stroke cats too much (in their view) they eventually can get a little testy and give a little nip. 46 At Shep's we are at sort of a standstill. We have 7 dogs right now and a few will probably live their life out at Shep's because they just aren't adoptable. Hobbs, the chihuahua snarls and growls at everyone he doesn't know. Charlie is the sweetest dog but he's very overweight and therefore has leg issues. Churro has many health problems. Chubbles.. same. Joe..same. Lily and Roscoe because they are big dogs will be hard to find someone to adopt them because we won't split them up. But it's okay. it's what we do.

60 Said cat (Jack) would jump up onto youngest son's loft bed and could clear the rail. Poor Max had to climb the ladder. When Max jumped down he'd cushion the distance by jumping to older son's bed 1st before jumping to the floor. Not Jack. Straight to the floor without a sound. He was a stealthy one.

83 Little Kid has a really hard time sucking so right now nipples aren't working. Thus the syringe, which pretty much allows pouring the milk right down her throat with her gulping away. Goat milk is very thick, as well, so nipples will have to be adjusted once we move on from syringe to bottle in a few days.

This is a fun experience for someone who has only had dogs before and never a newborn pet. Just hope we keep her alive long enough for her to get big amd smarter so she figures out her proper Mom Fueling Station Procedures.

90 The little calico refuses to assimilate into the brood. I think she is going to have to go.

Howdy! Not a bad idea. Weird how cats -- enlightened ones anyway -- like me despite being an avowed dog guy.

I spent a quite a lot of time trying to come up with names before I knew what gender combination I was going to get. If it was two boys they would have been Beavis and Butthead.

97 News chyron here: "Hiker missing for 2 weeks in Los Angeles park is found dead with his tired and hungry dog by his side." More details from AP...

A hiker who went missing two weeks ago was found dead in Griffith Park with his dog by his side, authorities said.

Oscar Alejandro Hernandez, 29, was reported missing on March 16. His body was found Thursday night in a remote area of the sprawling urban park. His dog, King, was alive but emaciated.

He apparently hadn't left Hernandez's side for two weeks, a relative told KNBC-TV.

Had a cat that could jump from floor to top of fridge, nearly straight up. I always was amazed at his gracefulness. I have old time tins on top of my fridge and he'd never crash into them. Then he'd look down on you like a vulture when you'd walk by!

When I was a kid we had a cat who would jump to the top shelf of a cabinet between my mom's wine glasses and such. It was one place us kids couldn't grab her from and she never broke one of them.

101 So Wilma is called a Torrie? I always assumed it was a calico variation
Posted by: CN at April 02, 2022 05:07 PM (ONvIw)

The pattern on a tortie/calico is from a thing called X inactivation, where females 'turn off' one of the two X chromosomes in a cell so they work like men who only have one. Cats have a gene that selects orange fur versus black fur on the X, so a female with one of each will have a mixed color pattern, which was called tortoiseshell after the similar looking tortoiseshell jewelery.

Calico cats mix in another gene, called "White Spotting" that has a varied expression that can go from small bits of white on the feet to an all white cat - it just cancels out all fur color. For some reason, as the amount of White Spotting goes up, the spots of orange/black color get more distinct and larger, which when the spotting gets large, above 50 percent gives the distinct color blobs of the Calico. Less white on a Calico gives something that looks more like a tortie, but with white.

Cats can also jump to a place partway up the wall and continue to run *straight up the wall* a good distance to reach the top even when they can't make it in one go.
