The National Football League set forth new diversity and inclusion efforts for the 2022 season at its annual owners meeting, such as requiring its 32 teams to employ a "female or a member of an ethnic or racial minority" as an offensive assistant, the league said in a statement.
Candidates must have at least three years of collegiate or professional experience in coaching football. Those persons will receive a one-year contract with a salary and benefits, the organization announced
For the roles, the NFL will reimburse teams up to $200,000 in 2022 and $205,000 in 2023 from a league fund for coaches.
"In recent years, head coaches have predominantly had offensive backgrounds," the NFL said. "We believe this resolution will assist greatly in continuing to source and identify diverse candidates earlier in their career, providing pipeline depth and furthering developing the diverse offensive pipeline."
According to league data, the percentage of people of color in coaching positions increased from 35% in 2020 to 39% in 2021.

That still happens, but in case you haven't noticed, cars are becoming a lot more software-based, which means the button blanks are quietly disappearing. As one Audi driver found out, this leads to some rather interesting software messages.
A short clip of an Audi Q4 E-Tron was recently posted to the Mildly Infuriating subreddit where it received well over 110,000 upvotes and nearly 6,000 comments at the time of writing. The owner of the vehicle had decided not to purchase Audi's tri-zone climate control, yet still received a "Sync" button in their brand new battery-powered SUV. And yes, pressing it did do something—but not what they expected.

Interesting science news. Carbon-coated nickel enables fuel cell free of precious metals

ITHACA, N.Y. - A nitrogen doped carbon-coated nickel anode can catalyze an essential reaction in hydrogen fuel cells at a fraction of the cost of the precious metals currently used, Cornell University researchers have found.
The new discovery could accelerate the widespread use of hydrogen fuel cells, which hold great promise as efficient, clean energy sources for vehicles and other applications.
It’s one of a string of discoveries for the Héctor D. Abruña lab in their ongoing search for active, inexpensive, durable catalysts for use in alkaline fuel cells.
“This finding makes progress toward using efficient, clean hydrogen fuel cells in place of fossil fuels,” said Abruña, professor in the department of chemistry and chemical biology at Cornell University.
The results published March 21 in “A Completely Precious-Metal-Free Alkaline Fuel Cell With Enhanced Performance Using a Carbon-Coated Nickel Anode,” in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Expensive precious metals, such as platinum, are currently required in hydrogen fuel cells to efficiently catalyze the reactions they employ to produce electricity. Although alkaline polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (APEMFCs) enable the use nonprecious metal electrocatalysts, they lack the necessary performance and durability to replace precious metal-based systems.
A fuel cell produces electricity through the hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) and an oxygen reduction reaction (OOR). Platinum, in particular, is a model catalyst for both reactions because it catalyzes them efficiently, and is durable in the acidic environment of a PEM fuel cell, Abruña said.

According to a new poll, that was distributed by Breitbart News, former Alaska Department of Administration commissioner Kelly Tshibaka is leading incumbent Senator Lisa Murkowski in the state’s U.S. Senate race. Murkowski has had numerous votes that have angered the GOP base, including her refusal to confirm Judge Brett Kavanaugh and her “yes” vote on a Democrat plan to federalize elections that are currently state run.
The poll, which was conducted the way Alaska’s new ranked-choice voting system will hold its election, found that Tshibaka would emerge as the only candidate with a shot to get over 50 percent in a four-way field in November. Conducted from March 14 to March 16, the survey of 500 likely voters in Alaska’s November general election found Tshibaka in the first round with a huge lead of more than double digits over Murkowski. “On that first choice on the ballot, Tshibaka comes in with 45.4 percent and Murkowski at just 28.7 percent—with a generic Democrat close behind Murkowski and a libertarian candidate in fourth place,” Breitbart wrote. The poll had a margin of error of 4.21 percent

A man at an upscale Galleria-area hotel was hospitalized early Saturday after he accidentally shot himself in the testicles, police said.
Police and paramedics responded to the shooting at the St. Regis Houston hotel around 11:30 p.m. Friday. Police said the man was either unpacking a gun or pulling it from his pants when it went off.
Police described the victim as a young man but didn't have information on his age. Paramedics took him to a hospital, where he was listed in serious but stable condition.

Lake Michigan goes through cycles where it raises and lowers. It can create problems for marinas, and there have been beach houses that had to be moved back at huge expense, or lost.

I'd say no. Just had that conversation with my Dad tonight - it didn't end well. But it ended like it always does, when I'm in the mood.

His mind is not "mediocre". He's a good card player, can apply geometry, and generally do well in even contests of wits where prior knowledge isn't an advantage.

But he "believes" what he believes. He is the definition of a Boomer. He has an ideology, which he conveniently switches up to suit his current needs, yet he has instant faith in that immediate set of beliefs regardless of the current circumstances.

He "didn't want to argue". Same as always. What he wanted was to be validated. He has a Back and Blue and Buy Union stickers in his back truck window.

280 I saw the lights about 14 years ago, in the countryside outside South Haven, MI. Way far south for the aurora. I stood in the yard looking up until my neck was sore. It was all hues of red and orange, and covered the entire northern half of the sky. I called everyone I knew on my old dumb cellphone and told them to run outside. Absolutely amazing.

Also saw it in Vermont, on the highway, when I was 20 or so, with all my pothead buddies. Girl in the car said, "Look at the lights in the sky!" We all told her she was high. 5 minutes later we were all outside the car, along with everyone else on the highway. That time it was the full greens, blues, purples experience you see in the videos. I consider myself lucky to have seen it twice.

It either has to be put in heavy-walled pressure vessels at high pressure, or liquefied at extremely low temperatures, and stored in cryogenic vessels. The hydrogen molecule is so tiny, it can leak through holes and cracks that block all hydrocarbon gases.

Little-known fact: there is more hydrogen in a gallon of gasoline than there is in a gallon of liquid hydrogen.

If fuel cells could be made to work efficiently at realistic temperatures, "burning" liquid hydrocarbon or alcohol fuel, that would be a game-changer.

Not uncommon for me to see them at stately Peon Manor (approx. lat 51N). Best ones I ever saw were near Rainbow Lake, in northern Alberta, 1980-something. I was on a seismic crew, we had worked all day, it was about 8:00 P.M., full dark, because January, and we were 6 or 8 of us crammed in a Suburban, headed back to camp for dinner and bed. The northern lights started kicking up, and got brighter and brighter, and dancing like crazy, and by unspoken mutual consent, the driver stopped, and we all got out, and gawked at the sky for ten minutes or so, until the cold set in on us. It was about -25C out. Horizon to horizon, the entire sky was lit up and moving. All the colors, too.

Note that field strength is about 1.2V per mile. That is, a long conductor a mile long (and oriented just right, of course) would have a voltage of 1.2V induced along it's length.

By comparison, a Carrington level event would generate field strengths of around 1 to 10 V per km in the lower lattiudes ( - 40 to + 40 deg.) It would get up in the 10 to 50V per km range at the high latitudes.

I think you are right. The Caesar cocktail, though, was invented at Caesar's Steak House in Calgary, Alberta, a classy joint favored by the oilpatch high-rollers. I have eaten there once or twice. The steaks are very good indeed. A Caesar cocktail is similar to a Bloody Mary, but uses Mott's Clamato juice, not tomato juice.

Caesar (or Cesare) and his brothers immigrated (legally) from Italy and had several establishments. The one in Tijuana had the additional benefit of being just inside the Mexican side during Prohibition. It's quite a good story.

Those surface fields aren't too bad for the power system, but you can see if you up an order of magntiude of more, as a 1859 Carrington event would, the grid is toast.

The trouble is those YUGE transformers on the ends of long and medium length transmission lines. On the time scale of 60Hz, a large DC voltage is induced on the phases. For Wye banks, that produces a large DC current flowing through the windings. A transformer is essentially zero impendence to DC current.

Efficient transformers operate just at the knee of the saturation curve (gives you the most capacity bang per buck of iron core needed). So, the AC voltage riding on top of that will drive the cores into saturation on the half cycle, dropping the exciting impendence at 60Hz to nothing as well.

HUGE, non-linear currents will flow, frying the windings in no time.

Series capacitors are actually used in some cases to cancel line inductance. This is complex thing, actually, and depends on load characteristics.

Transients and faults are a problem as well. Big ass fault on the load side, and the voltage drop across the series caps will be YUGE.

Kirk not quite out. Re Carrington event. There was a near miss in July 2012 (of all times). Sol did spit out a coronal mass ejaculation of Carrington proportions then, but it just missed us. Sol went Peter North but missed the Earf's face by a little bit.

Had it hit, it would've been a Carrington, with all the fried transformers I was going on about above.

703 Which reminds me: if you want a cheap car, go to Eastern Europe. A few months back I met friends in uh There Somewhere, who had a brand-new Dacia Sandero; I got in the back, and realized the front doors had power windows, the back doors had roll-down handles!
I was like, WTF, I haven't seen that in the USA since what, the 1980s at the latest?! Couldn't believe it.

Did Musk come to the USA as a very small child, an adult or was he born here? If he was in South Africa during his childhood then the teachers would not have been American and thus irrelevant to this issue.
