  • I have a local lawyer in the town I'm looking to move to checking on some things for me, and one of the things she was checking was whether there might be any council restrictions on any of the properties and yep, the house built in 1877 which is probably my preferred choice is heritage listed. So any renovations or improvements would not only have to pass by the town council but also the heritage council. Two sets of hoops and one of them on fire.

    Which helps explain why such a great property has been sitting on the market for so long. For my needs it's laid out pretty well (except for the original corner fireplaces which take up a ton of space and don't even work though there is a newer combustion stove in the living room) and it has been renovated fairly recently so there's not a lot of work that needs doing. The one thing that could do with an upgrade is the bathroom and that I could probably manage.

  • Reuben Hick said yesterday:
    I'm fascinated by the four considerations:
    * Internet speed
    * House Size
    * Price /m2
    * transportation

    Nothing about aesthetics, floorplan, neighborhood, structure condition, crime rate... all of the stuff normal people consider.
    Guilty as charged.

    I'm moving to a mid-sized country town (about 25,000 people) so there's not that much variation in neighbourhoods and crime rates. There's basically the parts with wide streets and lots of trees, and the parts with really wide streets and really lots of trees.

    Internet speed (and stability) is a key concern because I live online, and I chose this town because apart from being pretty nice - I've visited a few times and stayed overnight at least twice - the whole place has fiber internet.

    As for house size, also yes. I work from home, and my job requires multiple computers, so I need a big office on top of the usual space. And all my accumulated technical junk also takes up a lot of room, so I either have to throw it out or find a place with plenty of storage.

    The one with a garage the size of a small house and a house the size of two and a half small houses is probably overkill but is priced right in the middle of other places half the size. I can just tell the movers to shove everything into the truck at one end, and shove everything into the garage at the other end except for the dining table, fridge, and washing machine, which I would not want to drag up the stairs myself. And the rest I can unpack whenever.

  • Benzalkonium chloride kills cockroaches. Its the stuff you find in most household cleaning sprays; it's basically harmless to humans but effective on bacteria. (Not that I'd advise you to drink it.) But for some reason it is lethal to cockroaches. Spritz them with household cleaning spray instead of bug spray and they drop dead on the spot.

Now that my internet is working I'm back to watching vtubers while I work. Ah. That's better.

8 Oh, well, I tried. Good evening, Pixy. Yeah, there is always some damn catch in buying a house, it seems.

Update on Chekov the Ailing Codger Cat, for those interested: The damn cat rallied a bit last night! After his prednisolone, he actually worked his way out to the living room and lay on the floor for petting, not once but twice. He ate at least half of what I left for him last night, too. This morning he seems torpid and withdrawn again, so it was temporary. I know this can't last. But letting him go when he does something like this is the hardest decision I've had to make about a furry friend.

The vet is supposed to come tonight, but Linda will spend a good part of the day with him.

17 Good morning. Went to bed early, actually got a pretty solid nights sleep after a couple bad ones (joint pain, weather related). Turned on the tube to see live coverage of Retardo arriving at NATO HQ. He was walking past a line of flags representing member nations, and one could almost hear him saying "Look, man, this is no joke, OK. You need one of those flags for the homos. Gotta have it. It's law, for real man."

Posted by: m at March 24, 2022 06:22 AM

We have a 7-12 school. The vapers are likely to get caught in the h.s. bathrooms, so they go to the other. Where they proceed to intimidate the younger kids if they think of tattling and even cajole them into vaping so the kids are "guilty", too.

It's a cynical ploy on my part. Most of them are low-grades/high-absenteeism teens with a lot of problems at home. Most of us don't want to kick out the kids being raised by wolves, but we teachers don't want the administrators to have a keep-'em-in-class policy because the kids figure out fast they can do anything they want.

115 Mornin' again, all,

I've arrived at work and am sitting with the under-desk heater on, despite it being only 57 F. outside. It's a damp cold. Besides, when you sit for long periods, you tend to feel the chill a bit more.

As I mentioned before, the vet is coming tonight to speed Chekov off to the Rainbow Bridge. He rallied a tiny bit last night, but this morning he was torpid and withdrawn. He ate a little and was glad to be petted -- but that has not changed in some weeks. He'll never be any better and probably will get worse. I guess this is the right thing to do.

Dammit.

If nothing else, it seems to me these doctors are opening themselves to huge medical malpractice lawsuits. Even if they have their victims sign all sorts agreements I have to believe years later there are going to be a lot of angry people not happy about their youthful decisions and looking for revenge. And there will be plenty of lawyers eager to help.

Yes. Sickening, she seem to take some perverse pleasure in what she is doing. She should be nowhere near a hospital, clinic or sick people.

137 I went to a Taiwan Day celebration on campus as a youth. Besides the great food, they played a movie of a rural Chinese lass herding the family ducks. She did not follow her Dads advice, but the climax of the movie was her realizing her Dad was right. Lots and lots of duck extras in that movie.

140 71 Vapers are bad?

Yes, he has been tough. I've got to admire him. Well, I've admired all my cats for *something,* either brains or stubbornness or elegant looks or steady quiet friendship with me. With Chekov, I guess, it's tenacity as well as his good looks and his liking for human company.

144 >there is no technical reason to deploy to an Arm-based server.

Oh, but there is. Much like Ruby before it, some Node modules contain C code to build things in machine-native binaries for performance. If your SDLC involves restoring and testing your code on a build server and then zipping up node_modules for deployment (or if you're using yarn2) then your build server arch damn well better match your deploy server arch.
