Have We Changed the Clocks for the Last Time?

The Senate voted quickly to make daylight savings time permanent, and end the twice-yearly disruption of sleep schedules.

Will the House finally vote to do away with the very bad idea of changing our clocks every six months?

Some members of the House of Representatives are speaking about the Senate's recent vote in favor of making daylight saving time permanent, a move that might be popular with some Americans, but isn't popular with everyone.

It's not clear when, if at all, the House will vote on the legislation as members look to resolve other, more pressing issues.

As The Daily Wire reported, "The U.S. Senate voted unanimously on Tuesday to make Daylight Saving Time permanent in what many say will make short winter days better with an extra added hour of sunshine in the afternoon."

Members from both parties reportedly immediately stated their support for the move, although they seemed to be somewhat surprised by the quick passage through the upper chamber.

"I think it just caught us all by surprise that the Senate actually produced something and sent it to us. Usually -- usually bills go the other way," Representative Pete Aguilar (D-CA), told reporters early Wednesday, per The Hill.

On Wednesday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) told The Hill she is in favor of getting rid of the time shift, "[b]ut she wouldn't provide further details about when the House could take up the matter, particularly with leaders working with the administration to respond to Russia's invasion of Ukraine," the outlet noted.

"We didn't realize they were acting so quickly and dispositively of it," Pelosi said. "I, myself, support making daylight saving time permanent. I think it's not going to be much of an issue for us. But we have to socialize it in our caucus, and our Congress, not just the caucus."

Some "experts" -- what would we do without them? -- say that ending the changing of the clocks is a positive move, but it's Standard Time that should be made permanent, not Savings Time.

"We do applaud stopping the switching during the course of the year and settling on a permanent time," said Jocelyn Cheng, a member of the AASM's public safety committee. But, she added, "standard time, for so many scientific and circadian rationales and public health safety reasons, should really be what the permanent time is set to."

The AASM made this stance clear in 2020 when it released a position statement recommending that the country institute year-round standard time. Its reasoning, in part, is that standard time is more closely associated with humans' intrinsic circadian rhythm, and that disrupting that rhythm, as happens with daylight saving time, has been associated with increased risks of obesity, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease and depression.

Look, I'm fine with either. I have a stupid clock-radio CD player and every six months I have to google the instruction manual to figure out how to change the time again. It's one of those ones where you have to use the fast forward button and the mode button at the same time while also pushing the AM/FM selector three times. That kind of a deal.

Not to mention the insomnia I'm having since we switched.

5 Solar noon here is now 1:45 PM. For about two weeks after our winter solstice, sunrise would be at 8:46 AM.

By all means, do away with that asinine time change; but this place needs to be either EST or CDT, I don't care which they call it.

Also, how does this affect the synchronization of U.S. time with the rest of the time zones in the world?

A lot of folks, including here on this blog, have advocated the use of UTC for standardizing our time.

Maybe we should simply measure time after the Big Bang, kind of like we use Kelvin to measure temperature relative to absolute zero.

Same here. Too much afternoon/evening sunlight. I walked to my car at noon by my watch, and the angle of the sun was telling me, "The sun is not directly overhead, so it can't be noon."

With perma-DST, even in the winter it won't get dark until 6 pm. That won't feel right. And I hate that the sun keeps pounding away at my windows in summer until the sun slips behind the buildings across from me at 7 pm (note that the sun is still not down). It doesn't save any energy. But of course our "leaders" think Guam will tip over and the plants will get an extra hour of sunlight. Gah.

I think standardizing on, well, Standard Time makes more sense, but I'll take either.

But no, even if this passes and gets signed, we'll have at least two more time changes. Stopping the semi-annual clock change is actually going to create a gigantic amount of work. Virtually every piece of software is going to have to be updated to handle it and even though the change will be fairly easy, it's a lot of stuff to update and test and validate. If it passes, I can't imagine that it will take effect before this time *next* year, which means we'll "fall back" and "spring forward" one more time.

Why should pronouns get all the action?

Next time somebody announces their preferred pronouns, tell them your preferred adjectives and demand that they use them

I'm not sure why I have to say this. DST was a good idea. Humans naturally want to rise with the sun and begin their work. We've literally been doing that for 1000s of years. DST coordinates a change most people would otherwise make on their own if they could such that actual written/recorded schedules don't change. Sure get rid of DST just realize people will keep piecemeal winter/summer schedules and shift between them on their own, causing scheduling difficulty everywhere, in every industry it WILL happen, so get ready for the pain of a non-coordinated shift and tell yourself it's better than DST as many times as you have to, to believe it. As far as making DST "permanent" that's just stooooopid. Why permanently offset your timezone from other time zones on your latitude? What do you possibly hope to gain that way?

Ah, so I see you're one of those people who doesn't understand how the game is played. Allow me to educate you through a proposed rewrite:

Permanent DST is not only sensible, proper and appropriate, it is the ONLY sensible, appropriate and proper way to proceed. Any discussion of standardizing on Standard Time instead or - heaven forbid - maintaining the current semi-annual time change is evidence of a weak mind, sinister intent, ethical bankruptcy and moral turpitude. Any of you so-called "people" who disagree with me on this are destined for a richly-deserved eternity in Hell and my only hope is that your corporeal life is made to match it.

It's funny that if I want to wake up with the light (which is far better for my body), I can't choose that in the winter (and get to work on time) with "WE'RE SAVED BY DST YEAR ROUND" stupidity.

Back when I lived in Anchorage we had about 23 hours of some light at the height of summer (expect they still do for that matter). Alaska observed daylight savings time, always wondered what exactly they were trying to save.

Meanwhile, BLM and antifa criminals burn down buildings, assault people with bike locks and cement milkshakes, lob molotov cocktails into occupied cop cars, etc., and either get charged with some minor misdemeanor, or don't get charged at all -- because theirs was "mostly peaceful" or "entirely justified" rioting and looting.

374 I don't care which they pick - although I am partial to having the sun out later after work. But just stick with one dammit.

I bought a clock some years back that was smart enough to know which day they changed it, and it solved the problem for me. Of course, not 2-3 years later, they decided to change the dates. So, now I've got a clock that randomly changes time and I have to remember when that is? Garbage time.

The electricity in my area is iffy enough - I frequently get little instant blackouts - just long enough to shut down my computer and force me to reset every appliance clock - only to have it happen 3 days later.

I'm still trying to get used to the time change - and the dog of course thinks I'm an asshole (I am, don't tell her) for feeding her an hour late.

412 Before we fuck around with DST and DT we should change the time zone boundaries to something that makes more sense. Look at the time zone map of the US and it looks like congressional districts that have been gerrymandered by Democrats.

Ohio, Michigan Indiana and Georgia should be in Central. Most Texas should really be in Mountain. Now only El Paso is while the rest of it is in Central. That makes no sense. And then you have a section of Oregon(!!) that's in Mountain? DA FUQ is up with that?

Babies and toddlers don't "do" time changes either. In the fall, when most people get an extra hour of sleep, parents of youngsters don't. But in the spring, when everyone else loses that hour, parents don't do that either. The kids slowly, slowly shift over to the new time.

The whole "It screws with your natural rhythm" is specious and mostly BS. Yes DST is a big jump and kind of messes with your rhythm for a couple of days. Not nearly as much as sunrise an hour before you are supposed to get up messes with your sleep over the long haul. Humans are NATURALLY sunrise oriented.

And it's amusing to note that every Uke official statement uses the word "compromise". Very easy.

Now that I have a schedule where I am not getting up at the same time every day I use my phone as the alarm clock.

490 > Now that's some real atom-splitting mindshit right there.

One of my very favorite atheist talking point goes like this: There is no God, but if there was a God, why would He care what we do? It's not like people care what ants do.

This talking point projects our limitations onto God. We all have limited focus and capacity to perceive. Part of the reason we don't pay attention to ants is we can only pay attention to one or two things at the same time. We also only typically care about a few people and possibly a few animals.

Even if we did care about some ants, we don't have the ability to perceive what's going on in their lives other than rudimentary observations about what they do with their time. Do ants feel anything about their world? I don't know. Does anyone know?

God cares about all His creations and is apparently able to pay attention to all things at once. The God of the Bible has told us He cares about us and cares about what we do.

They say time passes, but what about when time moves into the leftmost traffic lane and refuses to pass at all? Is not time then a counterrevolutionary and a wrecker? And that brings to mind the next conundrum: How can the wreckers get up front and ahead of time to alleviate the bottleneck when time has negated the purpose of the passing lane by not passing?

Honest prep for an interview is important too.

International Harvester did a study on shift work,
productivity, and accidents. At the time they had rotating shifts where workers would work one shift for a period of time and the all would move to another shift.

The intent was that no worker would have to work the night shift forever. The study determined that that system, though well intentioned, was a total detriment.

They also discovered that there are were an ample number of workers who were pleased with the night shift.

611 Some "experts" -- what would we do without them? -- say that ending the changing of the clocks is a positive move, but it's Standard Time that should be made permanent, not Savings Time.

Um, no thank you. Longest day of the year, June 19, has "first light" in my area (SE Michigan) at 5:19am and sunrise at 5:52am. If that was Standard Time, first light would be 4:19am and sunrise at 4:52am. No freaking thank you.

Give me Daylight Saving Time year round.

Posted by: Clyde Shelton at March 21, 2022 04:57 PM (Do5/p)

612 The Very Bad Idea is not the moving of the clocks, it is Daylight Moving (NOTHING is saved) Time.
If the want to FIX it, (again, this is Washington trying to "fix something") change it back to STANDARD TIME, the thing that we just kicked to the curb.

Posted by: Jimmy the Lurker at March 21, 2022 05:16 PM (xNfqy)

613 Hey Ace, do you know who else agrees with permanent Daylight Moving Time? The Hill!

Posted by: Jimmy the Lurker at March 21, 2022 05:40 PM (xNfqy)

614 I agree with Jimmy the Lurker and others commenting here: If we're eliminate the switch in times, stick to standard time, not daylight time.

It's worth repeating that we tried year-round daylight time during the Carter administration, as an "energy-saving" measure in reaction to the Arab oil crisis. Like so many of Pious Jimmy's ideas, it flopped and was quickly repealed. Let's not repeat Carter's mistake.

BTW, if we do repeal the time switch, we will have to update every computer in the country - indeed, in the world. We had to do it when Congress last change the law for DST back in 2005, and while the process *should* be straightforward, no doubt complications will crop up.

Posted by: Nemo at March 21, 2022 06:37 PM (S6ArX)

615 "standard time is more closely associated with humans' intrinsic circadian rhythm"
IFF you're in the right part of the time zone. Human circadian rhythm is most closely associated with the SUN. And when the sun is at noon CHANGES across a time zone - by as much as... an hour! Imagine that!

"disrupting that rhythm, as happens with daylight saving time, has been associated with increased risks of obesity, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease and depression."
This is a stupid defense of standard time vs daylight savings time. It's the switching back and forth that disrupts, not the particular mode you set.

Why don't we breakup the monopoly time zones? Get clocks for people closer to what the sun is where they live?

You know why? GLOBALISM. That's the reason why. And Progressivism - as in humans are machines that can be switched about like clocks.
