Long time lurker. Love the Pet thread.

I’ve recently retired and moved out to the farm. Living in the shop which the “boys” aren’t too happy about.

The photo is all three wanting to be in the shop office with me. Not Happening!

Lab – Lucky - almost 12

GSD – Mac – almost 10

Little dog – rescue that my Dad got and I inherited – supposedly 11

Love them all and they make my day every day (somedays better than others)
Tom

What the hell is wrong with you? Dogs deserve to be in the office or the shop or wherever their master is. Just kidding, they look happy to be the center of attention. Thanks for the neat story.

Good morning, MisHum!

Since the first anniversary of my Dukies passing is coming up next Saturday the 19th — PET THREAD DAY! — and since the one you graciously published last year got eaten up in the ACE crash last year, I thought you might want to have a go at it again.

ACE OF SPADES PET THREAD:

It is with a heavy heart I report on the passing of Dukie, our believed little feline companion, almost thirteen years old. She crossed over the rainbow bridge on March 19, 2021. She was featured in the Pet Thread on December 9, 2017.

Her original name was Duke, which is what’s on the memorial pawprint we received from our vet. We thought the litter were all boys. Dukie and her sisters, Princess and Tammy (originally Duke, Prince and Tommy), all succumbed from cancer. She had gone from 8 pounds to five in about three months; she was a wisp of her former self and had stopped eating a few days before she died. The pics attached are our all-time favorites. Even after a year, I miss that little furball terribly...

I wrote a little obit for her here

George, Terry & Laurence

A smiling kitteh, how cool! So sorry to hear of Dukie's passing. A wonderful tribute for a wonderful pet. Thank you for sharing with us today.

We lost our Rayray this week. He was a dog made up of mismatched parts, but an absolute lover and the best tempered animal I've ever known. I believe he was solar powered, and would walk a trail at his stately pace for miles without stopping or complaining, his alternator (tail) moving side to side charging the batteries. He loved to perform border patrol in the backyard, always greeted everyone with a smile, and just kept on keeping on until finally the liver cancer took him. I haven't cried that hard in years. - tcn in AK

Great looking pooch, so sorry to hear of your loss tcn. Tail as an alternator that's funny but yet so true. May your memories of Rayray be happy.

Hi MisHum,

I know the animal lovers at AoS will understand when I say that I lost one of my best friends on Wednesday. I'm thankful only that it was sudden and quick, and he didn't suffer long.

Murphy was the most rambunctious of his litter and it was love at first sight. He was the first puppy to approach me when I went to check out the litter, and nudged every other puppy away who tried to get my attention. He got expelled from puppy kindergarten because his playfulness was too disruptive to the class. They suggested I take him to individual classes, but I decided Murphy was too good for those people. We passed.

Because he was so food-motivated, training Murphy was fairly painless and he was housebroken very quickly. He knew more tricks than I can recount and one of the kids actually taught him to howl a little just before playing dead. It was hysterical to see. He was the world's greatest counter surfer, helping himself to a ham or meatloaf on more than one occasion. Murphy was also an accomplished escape artist, but thankfully never went farther than a neighbor's house a few doors down because that's where the Pupperoni was. And as you can see from the picture, he was a studious plumber's apprentice.

He never met a human that he didn't love and they always loved him back. The locals nicknamed him Mayor McMurphy. My sons loved taking him for walks up by the boardwalk in the summer, dubbing him the ultimate chick magnet.

Like most Golden Retrievers, Murphy stayed a puppy 'til the very last. While I'm thankful that his passing was blessedly quick, I wish we were given more warning of what was to come. Would have loved to bring him down to the beach for one last swim.

He was the best boy.~~ IrishEi

So sorry to hear of Murph's passing. I love the photo where he is supervising the plumbing job. I bet his invoice was a lot less than a real supervisor's. I know it was hard, but thank you for sharing.

38 For 40 yrs I have always had dogs, which I do not have any longer.
What I do have is a feral female cat that sits under my bird feeder day after day. Loneliness set in and I purchased my first ever bag of kat food. Now I look out around 5:15am and there she is waiting for breakfast and has become accustom to sitting on said deck waiting for me to come home after work. About 3-4 wks ago I noticed her side had a little protruding going on. Now she it very prego and I broke down and bought one of those outdoor kat houses. Don't know if she has slept in there yet, but I threw in some food and she ate it so we shall see. About 2 weeks ago at dinner time I looked out the back door and there lounging on the deck while prego ate her din din was baby-daddy. I wondered if he was the daddy. He's a BIG orange kat. He started coming around in 2019. If I was on the deck and looked at him as he walked by, he would look at me and give me the finger. I swear he could kill a human, beast that he is. Suffice to say, they are all going to get fixed. I just hope she will be okay.

51 My shadow, and best friend died on Tuesday this week. Abby was 14 and a very good girl. Her back legs were paralyzed because she jumped out of our rv and hit the steps with her back. But that didn't really stop her. She loved running and to the end she thought she could run with the big dogs. Her favorite activity, besides eating anything, was swimming. She would go to any body of water and dive in. It didn't matter the size or the outside temperature. She would try to break ice to get to the water. She saw the oceans on both coast and loved chasing those waves back where they came from. She traveled to more states than most people ever get to. She even saw the Grand Canyon, she wasn't impressed. She loved the sunshine and rolling in green grass. She's with her brother Smokey and her cousin Odin and my dad, and they're probably chasing dad around again. I will miss my girl and my Smokey forever.

54 Yay, Moron Pets!

My little golden Godsend kitty Charlie has been worrying lately. Off his feed. (We've had to switch brands, because the Friskies are not on the shelves lately.) Sleeping a lot. Not jumping well. Seems a little confused sometimes. Kitty Alzheimer's? Caught the kungflu? Maybe tired of winter? (I know I am.) Still a sweetheart, and loves to cuddle with MiladyJo. Sure hope he's just feeling punk and not heading for a finale.

He was running around a huge field and my dad was with him. My dad looked at me and smiled and waved. I woke up with such a feeling of peace and happiness and I knew they had found each other. They were buddies when they were on Earth and they are still buddies in heaven. That's how I know Smokey and Dad will take care of Abby and I will see all of them again.

72 I sure hesitate to ask, but I am going to anyway: anyone else catch sight of their pets after they passed on? For a week after my dog departed, I would catch glimpses of her in the house. I know that was just because I was used to seeing her.
I think.

No harm in thinking your pets are coming back to check on you. And it gets you to remember them again.

My cats at least have always bounced right back from losing even bunches of teeth. One of mine came back from the vet wobbly from meds and started chowing down on the dry food instantly like nothing after losing several teeth.

76 Our little black kitteh Scout is going on 17, and is showing signs of dementia. Confusion, lots and lots of meowing, forgetting that I just fed her, that sort of thing. But physically she is doing very well, no kidney or bowel issues. She can still jump up onto the counter, which she knows we do not like. I guess all we can do is be there for her. She's still a sweetie. Loves lap time.

77 68 I am curious about dog tooth care. I was reading something this week about brushing your dog's teeth regularly (special brush and dog-specific toothpaste with flavors like poultry and peanut butter).

I do that with my dog's teeth although not as much as I should. The fun part is getting them to hold still and stop eating the toothbrush because they really like the taste.

85 Afternoon, all,

Chekov the Ailing Codger Cat is still eating -- though he has not demolished the bowl of Rx food plus sauce that I left him this morning. He's getting picky and prefers the Friskies stuff. He'll eat his dry Rx food -- I've heard him crunching it, and the bowl level drops -- but naturally he likes the kitty junk food. He's sprawled in the sunlight from the bedroom window now.

I don't know how much longer he has, but he's tough.

That cat has been lucky since kittenhood. Good looks, a breeder lady who really cares for her cats, and now two humans who dance attendance on his furry rump (including combing it out when necessary).

I don't think he's in any *pain*, but he still does not move easily, he's not grooming himself (we're brushing and combing him), and he withdraws from our company more often than not. Miss Linda suggests that maybe he's afraid we'll step on him while he's moving so slowly.

92 71- soon after my Dad passed 14 yrs ago, I had that type vivid "dream" he was standing, body fine, and that was great to see, then his beloved big white cat Misty, who passed a year before, (breaking Dads heart and went downhill) jaunted in, I said Misty you're ok! Dad said Yeah, he's his old self again.
I said to Dad I missed him does he miss me and he did his whistle and said "Miss you!? Everyday I ask if they could send for my daughter"... I have never doubted a second we will all reunite one day.

The boy was also there when Rosie the beagle, of pork chop swiping fame, left us as well. He's 16 this coming week, so not so bad as a little dude saying goodbye. He's also high on the psychopathy chart so he doesn't feel things the way we might; he mostly knows he's supposed to be sad, so he mimics it. It's never easy for anyone.

97 I never saw Toby, Conor's older "brother", after he passed, but for a few weeks I sensed his presence in several rooms in the house and fully expected to see his joyful grin every time I entered those rooms or turned around to look behind me when I heard a "doggy" noise.
That doesn't happen anymore but I still miss that sweet boy!

Perhaps, but I have seen a few older cats I think it is just instinct because they know they aren't fit to face a predator, so they hide. When my cats got that way I tired to find or make dens they could feel save in while being still part of the house rather than back under a bed upstairs alone.
