Police originally were sent to the 73-year-old victim's Hawaii Loa Ridge home Monday following a missing person's report from the victim's brother. The unnamed victim reportedly owned the house, which is located in an affluent gated community. Authorities returned to the scene later that afternoon following no response that morning. Posted by: Tom Servo at March 09, 2022 10:16 PM (evAgx) Bridge of Sighs is the album to start with if you want to learn about Robin Trower. The Bridge of Sighs was a bridge in Europe somewhere that led into a dastardly prison. It was where they sent the worst of the worst, although in the 18th century, it could have been anything. It was said that when the prisoner walked over it, they realized they would never leave, and they would sigh, knowing where they were going. Hey, I didn't Google it, that was from memory. Still at least a few working brain cells left. Posted by: LeftCoast Dawg at March 09, 2022 10:24 PM (sy5kK) 126

I laugh like a fool watching Animal House. I have not laughed once watching Caddyshack. In fact, I feel I am watching a nature documentary about a-holes, because all the characters seem to be a-holes. And not funny a-holes.
Should I turn in my cinema card? Posted by: BeckoningChasm at March 09, 2022 10:22 PM (m0zqP) You're right, it is kind of a documentary about a-holes. The story is weak; but what's so great is the improv by Rodney Dangerfield and Bill Murray, and of course the over the top preening of Ted Knight. That's what we watch the movie for. Several stories about how it was put together, but the one I think is the most true is that production started, and everyone realized they had a total dog of a script that was bomb. So the producers quickly hired Dangerfield and Murray without having any lines written for them; they told both of them just to improv their way through. It shows; whenever either of them has a line, no one on the set had any idea what they were going to say. Posted by: Tom Servo at March 09, 2022 10:36 PM (evAgx) 178
I guess the thing is, in Animal House, Dean Wormer could be seen as having a "valid viewpoint" while in Caddyshack, Judge Ted Baxter just seemed to be an a-hole with no redeeming qualities at all.
Maybe I want my destruction-oriented-comedies to have a less stacked deck. Posted by: BeckoningChasm at March 09, 2022 10:34 PM (m0zqP) In Animal House, the horse dies. In Caddyshack, the gopher lives to dig another day. Posted by: mrp at March 09, 2022 10:37 PM (6eRlp) 179

I have a three book set of "I need a new butt."
It's actually pretty hysterical. Nothing LGBT, sexual, or anything at all. Pretty much the point of view of a standard 8/ 9 year old boy who thinks he has a bad butt which has a crack in it. If you like that kind of humor, it's pretty good. If you use your pinky finger to drink your Earl Grey every day, you won't laugh. My two daughters, 12 and 13, thought it was very funny indeed. Ask me again in 3 years and it will be nothing but eye rolling, of course. Firing a teacher over it? Seems a bit over the mark. Especially since if he'd just molested the kids instead, he'd be a hero to the left instead of an evil monster..... Posted by: Rafal Gan Ganowicz at March 09, 2022 10:39 PM (DN0pc) 187

One of the most (darkly) amusing lynching's I've read about happened in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1736. As always, the local government at the time was oppressive and hated by the populace, and Captain of the Guard John Porteous had ordered his men to fire into a crowd when it got unruly while he hung some smugglers. A boy was killed, many others shot, and eventually John Porteous was seized by a huge, angry mob and hung in the middle of the Haymarket. Sic semper tyrannis and all that.

Every so often the cork would pop and a zillion gallons of water would pour out trying to find the Pacific. Repeat several times. I'm less sure about the Colorado, the usual thing is land uplift being worn down by a pre-existing river like a wire cutting cheese. New study: The renewable fuel standard has led to a net 24% increase in CO2 emissions since 2005. Namely because so many millions of acres of grassland were plowed under to convert into farmland, which triggered rapid decay of buried biomass.

And, of course, Harvard helped cover it up. No enemies to the Left, after all. In 1986, Professor Matthew Meselson of Harvard University was granted approval by Soviet authorities for a four-day trip to Moscow where he interviewed several senior Soviet health officials about the outbreak. He later issued a report which agreed with the Soviet assessment that the outbreak was caused by a contaminated meat processing plant, concluding the Soviets' official explanation was completely "plausible and consistent with what is known from medical literature and recorded human experiences with anthrax". Per JackStraw's rec I watched Ukraine On Fire by Roger Stone. I was skeptical about Stone's impartiality and am still not sure, but he far from sugar coated the US involvement in the "color revolutions" there and elsewhere. He has a distaste for Soros' frequent interventions in other countries. Victoria Nuland made a few appearances too, and quite an array of pols: McCain, W, Obama. We've been involved in Uke politics for a very long time.
I also noted that the tactics used by the Ukrainian/CIA groups to oust elected governments are remarkably similar to the antifa people here. I found it fascinating because while blaming Russia, Russia, Russia there had a huge impact, it had less of one here until very recently. It's free on youtube. 395 Per JackStraw's rec I watched Ukraine On Fire by Roger Stone.
============== Oliver Stone can be accused of lots of things, but he knows how to make a compelling movie. And this time his tinfoil hat skepticism may be on target. Sure, I'll watch it too, knowing that some of the people Stone may accuse of setting Ukraine on fire are currently part of the LGB junta, including the Placeholder himself. >Yesterday afternoon, Under Secretary of State Victoria Nuland appeared before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), hoping to debunk growing claims that there are chemical weapons labs in Ukraine, smugly asked Nuland: "Does Ukraine have chemical or biological weapons?"
Rubio undoubtedly expected a flat denial by Nuland, thus providing further "proof" that such speculation is dastardly Fake News emanating from the Kremlin, the CCP and QAnon. Instead, Nuland did something completely uncharacteristic for her, for neocons, and for senior U.S. foreign policy officials: for some reason, she told a version of the truth. Her answer visibly stunned Rubio, who - as soon as he realized the damage she was doing to the U.S. messaging campaign by telling the truth - interrupted her and demanded that she instead affirm that if a biological attack were to occur, everyone should be "100% sure" that it was Russia who did it. Grateful for the life raft, Nuland told Rubio he was right. ===== https://is.gd/lV6vBw Posted by: Dworkin Barimen - anarcho-tyranny? you're soaking in it! at March 10, 2022 12:36 AM (L9uv7) 472

>But Rubio's clean-up act came too late. When asked whether Ukraine possesses "chemical or biological weapons," Nuland did not deny this: at all. She instead - with palpable pen-twirling discomfort and in halting speech, a glaring contrast to her normally cocky style of speaking in obfuscatory State Department officialese - acknowledged: "uh, Ukraine has, uh, biological research facilities." Any hope to depict such "facilities" as benign or banal was immediately destroyed by the warning she quickly added: "we are now in fact quite concerned that Russian troops, Russian forces, may be seeking to, uh, gain control of [those labs], so we are working with the Ukrainiahhhns [sic] on how they can prevent any of those research materials from falling into the hands of Russian forces should they approach" Posted by: Dworkin Barimen - anarcho-tyranny? you're soaking in it! at March 10, 2022 12:37 AM (L9uv7) 473
Re: Seger/Eagles, IIRC, Glen Frey was a young musician and he got an audience with Mr. Seger. He was much impressed with Frey's guitar virtuosity and reportedly wanted to add him to the tour. Frey's mom nixed that deal, and I think, the friendship, when an underage Glen came home drunk and/or high after a night with his newest bestest buddy.
Seger encouraged Glen to write his own songs and Glen reportedly asked, "But what if they suck?" Bob replied, (something to the effect of) "They'll all suck in the beginning, but you'll get better at it!" Posted by: Joe Kidd at March 10, 2022 12:40 AM (bUGMk) 474

REO in the "Ridin'" and "Rollin'" days was a truly awesome rock and roll band. Then they went commercial and sold millions of records making insipid crap. You know, it's hard to fault them for making a buck, but it was kind of a shame to lose the old REO.
Posted by: Caesar North of the Rubicon Indeed. There were a lot of phenomenal 70s rock bands that were only "discovered" by the broader culture in the 80s when they went more commercial and made it on to MTV, but their best music was always their 70s output. GnuBreed, don't know much about valuable labels; I was into album covers, especially some of the great art. I have three vinyl album covers that are somewhat rare: The original Aerosmith album cover, with the small bio of the band on the back and a smaller 'postage stamp' photo of the band on the front, not the later full-cover one. Then I have the Lynyrd Skynyrd 'Street Survivors' lp which I bought just before the crash. The cover has the flames on the front; when re-released after the crash, the flames were gone. My third cover that is, uhm, unusual, yeah that's the word, is Uriah Heep's 'Demons and Wizards'. I don't know how they did it but the band got that cover past the censors. If you look at the origin of the milky river, you'll see it's a vagina. One of the rocks over which that river flows is a tumescent penis quite close to that vagina. I call it The Uriah Heep Pr0n Album Cover. Of course Yes had some great album cover art. And then there's King Crimson's In 'The Court of the Crimson King' cover which is interesting.

I was working under the Jeep today, and I took it out of my pocket to avoid rolling over onto it, and pressing the damn buttons. Set it on the windshield of the Jeep, resting against the windshield wiper. Forgot it was there, and drove off. It must have slid off somewhere, and landed on the road, and gotten squashed. Or else a hobo picked it up. Dialing the number from another phone, it went straight to voicemail, so "squashed" is the smart money bet.

TB asked him if he should do that? Apparently, TB was very childlike . . . then dead at 25. Didn't even make the 'rock stars who died at 27' list. Well, I am going to go to bed. Past 0100 here. Despite losing the feckking fone, I did get the Jeep pretty well sorted out. Lowered the transfer case a tetch to optimize driveline angles, and cut the rear driveshaft and extended it by 1.5" to make it ride at its old location in the t-case spline. I was very careful when cutting and welding it to maintain phase and balance, and it seems to have paid off. Had it out on the freeway, and no detectable vibration at 65 mph. The Jeep rides and drives quieter than it did before the work was done. It's a long step up to get in it, though.

555 Sucks since you probably lost all stored phone #s. I keep a handwritten list of contacts.
I use tracfone since they take cash. All you need is a (disposable) email address to activate it. Four years, no problemos. You can buy renewal cards at a bunch of places. Posted by: GnuBreed at March 10, 2022 02:33 AM (F0YaR) Didn't have many numbers stored. Phone was utter junk. Mostly pissed off by losing the Ting SIM card. I have been with Ting Mobile for several years, and am very pleased with them. Just when you thought we were done with the stupid wet market origin of Covid, they are pushing it again.
The thing is, the origin being at the market does not preclude the virus being developed at the lab and released in the market. Specifically to try to blame the animals at the market for the disease. That prick Larry Sabato goes after a UVA student speaking the truth. She takes a risk and calls out the scary political shaming on campus. Everyone knows about this, it is not a secret. But that jerk calls here out and talks about his "52 years" being associated with that campus.
Well no shit Sherlock, a lot can change in 52 years. Everyone knows it is a left wing school and they don't countenance other opinions. What gets me is Sabato thinks we are so dumb. He has been involved with that school for 51 years? Then he has seen how far it has fallen. There was a prof there that taught history. His students loved him and he was regularly recognized as the most respected teacher at UVA. You don't hear much from him these days. In the early and mid 2000s, he was on every panel, usually he was the moderator. I hope that guy just called it a day. My fear is he got pushed aside. Either way, what has Sabato left to future scholars and undergrad students. Posted by: Quint at March 10, 2022 03:41 AM (6JYoJ) 572

Re the content and colleges. It is weird to me O'Roarke even we t to College Station. I understand it or a big town and there has to be a lot of Dems. But the CS U knew was very conservative. If you were on public transport, Rush Limbaugh was the norm on the radio. On a bus, 18 year old men would give up their seat to a girl. This wasn't once in a while, it was the rule.
I think even the most conservative colleges have moved left. I wish I had an answer other than to eschew them. Posted by: Quint at March 10, 2022 04:07 AM (6JYoJ) 587

Posted by: Quint at March 10, 2022 04:07 AM (6JYoJ) ---- It starts with one liberal professor getting hired, then getting on the department hiring committee. The department goes downhill from there. Also, once a university has a Dean of Diversity, that school is fucked. Posted by: RickZ at March 10, 2022 04:24 AM (ldL4g) 588
