The Morning Report - 3/4/22

dayofjackassgraham.jpg

Good morning, kids. The weekend is here and things are getting hot in the Ukraine -- literally.

A fire broke out at the Zaporizhzhia power plant in Ukraine as Russian forces bombard the facility, leading Ukrainian officials to claim that the threat is "10 times larger than Chernobyl."

"Russian army is firing from all sides upon Zaporizhzhia NPP, the largest nuclear power plant in Europe," Ukrainian foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba tweeted on Thursday evening. "Fire has already broke out. If it blows up, it will be 10 times larger than Chornobyl! Russians must IMMEDIATELY cease the fire, allow firefighters, establish a security zone!"

This is the kind of thing that worries me vis a vis the situation getting out of hand and going supercritical, pun absolutely intended. But you'll be relieved to know that responsible, cooler heads are prevailing amongst our leadership.

Republican South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham called for the assassination of Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday.

"Is there a Brutus in Russia? Is there a more successful Colonel Stauffenberg in the Russian military?" the senator wrote on Twitter. "The only way this ends is for somebody in Russia to take this guy out. You would be doing your country -- and the world -- a great service.

"The only people who can fix this are the Russian people. Easy to say, hard to do," he continued. "Unless you want to live in darkness for the rest of your life, be isolated from the rest of the world in abject poverty, and live in darkness you need to step up to the plate."

Well, at least he didn't call for the CIA or SEAL Team 6 to do the wet work, so I guess that's something. Funny. As Bogie said about Wilmer Cook in The Maltese Falcon "the cheaper the crook the gaudier the patter." Unreal. Vladimir Putin, who has now gotten himself into a quagmire and whose own state of mind is being questioned, has absolute jerks over here calling for him to be taken out. Recall that Lindsay, the phony faygele, was wetting himself while exhorting the DC cops to open fire on unarmed American citizens who dared offend his sensibilities on 1/6/21. Right now, a Brutus over here ought to rip Lindsay's arms out of their sockets and beat Sean Hannity to death with them -- rhetorically speaking of course. Right now, we have a situation that is at or very near the point of spiraling out of control. It's bad enough that on our side of the coin we have a demented vegetable in the Oval Office being controlled by manifestly irresponsible ideologues and out of touch apparatchiks in Foggy Bottom, Langley and the Pentagon. That is, when they can control the mush coming out of his spittle-flecked cake-hole. I mean, which is worse; that his stating Putin could insert "just the tip" into Ukraine was a malaprop or an intentional green light?

That said, what worries me is that the longer this drags on without Ukraine crying uncle (Joe) or Putin seizing the strategic assets and territory that effectively captures the country, the more desperate he will get. The safest bet for him would be to be happy with the capture of Kherson and the Donbas, declare victory, withdraw from everywhere else and lick your wounds. Of course, will the world lift all sanctions now that the rhetoric of Putin being Hitler has flooded the airwaves? Can Biden and the rest of the world do that without further flushing their credibility down the shitter after "two weeks" (about 99 in real time) to flatten society? No, they can't. And Putin is not going to let the ruble disintegrate without a reaction.

But that's at a strategic level. The Ukrainians reportedly took out a big Russian general. What's to stop the Red Army version of General Jack D. Ripper going rogue and lighting off a suitcase nuke on Kyev? Or firing a MRBM on Incirlik Air Base in Turkey? That's why I was hard on the Beaver, er, Lindsay. We are in a pickle right now thanks to Obama, Biden and Clinton. The longer this goes on, the more likely we are going to get our hair mussed.

In successful systems, bad news flows to the top. In unsuccessful systems, underlings make sure it doesn't reach their superiors because they don't want to look bad.

In really unsuccessful systems, superiors make clear to their underlings that they don't want to hear the bad news. I think that's what's happened to Putin. I saw a video being passed around by pro-Putin trolls on the Web that showed him riding in limos and walking around to the tune of gangsta rap, but it didn't make him look powerful so much as isolated.

Now things haven't gone according to plan, and there doesn't appear to be a plan B because Putin never seriously considered the possibility of failure. Russia is isolated diplomatically and economically to an unprecedented degree, while it flounders militarily.

This doesn't make Putin less dangerous necessarily -- in some ways it makes him more so -- but it does mean that he's unlikely to behave in a clearheaded or objectively reasonable fashion.

Here in the United States, meanwhile, we have leadership problems of our own. [So-called quote-unquote "president"] Joe Biden managed to stumble his way through an uninspired State of the Union address in which he confused Ukrainians and Iranians, but he has shown no signs of being capable of the kind of leadership we need. (Unlike the Germans, he's not even rethinking his dumb energy policies, which need to be changed to promote energy independence and weaken Putin further.) . . .

. . . Meanwhile, another big player, China, isn't much more impressive. President Xi Jinping, while younger than Biden and Pelosi at a sprightly 69, is in a tenuous position at home. China's zero-COVID policy has failed and the public resents it, a real-estate collapse looms even as other businesses teeter financially -- and Xi's power hangs by a thread as he faces challengers who don't like his one-man state or his saber-rattling abroad . . .

. . . Only in Europe do we see, surprisingly, glimmers of more sensible behavior, as fear of a Russian invasion concentrates the minds of leaders there.

The truth is, throughout the past two years of [Chinese] COVID panic, we've seen that the world's leadership class isn't up to the task. Now, facing a major diplomatic crisis, we have to hope it will do better. Hope and maybe pray a little.

Yes indeed, Glenn Reynolds. Around the globe. TOP. Men. Meanwhile, it's funny in a sick, twisted way that Joey Soft-Serve confused Iranians and Ukrainians. But it's not funny for a number of reasons. And in fact, it might be quite revelatory, because while we weren't looking . . .

A senior Russian official announced on Thursday that a new nuclear deal with Iran will be announced within 24 to 48 hours, signaling the Biden [junta's} continued reliance on and cooperation with Moscow even as it wages a full-scale war in Ukraine.

Mikhail Ulyanov, Russia's ambassador for Iran negotiations, made the announcement in a video now circulating on social media. Ulyanov also said that he does not see the deal falling apart as a result of Russia's war, and that the two issues remain separate.

The terms of the deal remain unknown as the Biden [junta] has sought to cut Congress out of the deal and prevent it from performing its legally mandated oversight. Under the Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act of 2015, Congress must give its approval of any new agreement with Iran. While the Biden administration has promised to follow this law, Congress has not been presented with details of the deal or been asked to approve it before the United States signs.

Hallelujah! At long last, a victory for the Biden junta - - wait a second. Aren't we a red nether hair's breadth from sending US combat troops into Ukraine? Aren't we sanctioning the Russians out the wazoo because of Putin's Hitler-ish behavior? How could that be happening while at the same time we're working with them to give Iran the green light to build nukes?

So, okay. Some crazy Ivan or worse, crazy Vladimir, gave the go ahead to shell a Ukrainian nuke plant and risk Chernobyl times 100. If this treaty goes ahead - and it will go ahead because Valerie Jarrett, Ron Klain and Barack Obama couldn't care fuck-all for the now defunct US Constitution - the real action is going to be in and around the Persian Gulf.

It's insane. The one Achilles heel of Putin is oil, and we have a junta in power that is hell bent on literally sending America back into the dark ages by destroying our fossil fuel industry. Yet, at the same time, the blowback of $110 a barrel crude and $7.00 a gallon gas - and rising - has forced them not to back down from the insane green nightmare but to allow as the article reads "Sanctioned Russian ships ferrying illicit Iranian crude oil in new sanctions-busting scheme" and insist on our buying our oil from Iran.

1 - Fuel Putin's war machine while publicly having the vapors
2 - Buy Iranian oil to keep the peons in flyover country happy AND green light their nukes
3 - Completely impoverish America
4 - ???
5 - Profit!!!

High prices are by design, and they don't care if it hurts your family, your job, your food supply, or your ability to move freely about the country as long as their windmills and Chinese-made solar panels operate your cars and planes.

Don't ask questions.

The timing is spectacularly bad. Democrat authoritarians have begun removing mandates and lockdowns because the political science has changed and Leftist politicians are being hurt in public opinion polls. But these autocrats have re-imposed another kind of lockdown. They're making gas so expensive you won't be able to go anywhere.

Doubt me?

The Republican Party's RNC Research highlighted three key Democrats spouting off on energy policy and they said the quiet part out loud, as the saying goes. Before the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Remember when Joe Biden's Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm laughed when asked what she would do about gas prices hovering at $2.89? . . .

. . . This is the plan.

As the old saying goes, "you can't make an omelet without breaking a few eggs." If you're wondering, we're the eggs. They'll still be able to take private jets to Davos and Aspen and parts in between to do the "people's business." Just to clarify, we're not "the people," either. They're the people.

And she's not the only one.

On Thursday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, born 81-years-ago when gas was 18 cents per gallon, decreed she was opposed to importing Russian energy. Even as Biden has grossly increased Russian energy imports, Pelosi is now all for cutting them off and continuing the Biden [junta] policy of halting drilling on public lands. This has reduced supply and increased prices for everything: meat, produce, bread.

So, Nancy's reaction is, "Let them eat cake."

There's an old saying: Man plans and G-d laughs. All it takes is one crazy Ivan, or even crazier bastard in the West Wing, to miscalculate and the best laid plans of Putin, Biden/Jarret, Xi, Khamenei, Soros et al will go up like Hiroshima.

And in the immortal words of General Buck Turgidson, "Suge! Don't forget to say your prayers."

Have a good weekend. AND . . . if you can, please consider hitting Ace's and my tip jar? It helps keep the lights on and is truly appreciated.

32 by 1910, American English underworld slang, from hobo slang, "naive young boy," but especially "a catamite;" specifically "a young male kept as a sexual companion, especially by an older tramp," from Yiddish genzel, from German Gänslein "gosling, young goose" (see goose (n.)). The secondary, non-sexual meaning "young hoodlum" seems to be entirely traceable to Dashiell Hammett, who sneaked it into "The Maltese Falcon" (1929) while warring with his editor over the book's racy language:

"How did Volodymyr Zelensky rise from a comedian acting as President in a TV show to becoming the President of Ukraine? Who is behind his rise? These are legitimate questions particularly when Zelensky became a household name in the US for the key role he played in the first impeachment of President Trump, which was also attached to the Trump-Russia hoax and the discredited Steele Dossier."

Western "leaders" absolutely, unambiguously hate We The People and have in the last two years amped up their unrelenting war against We The People in order to humiliate, impoverish and then depopulate because they are sick, depraved evil mother fuckers.

So when people who hate us are using the EXACT SAME PROPAGANDA techniques and Nazi psychological treatment as they used on Trump, GangGreen, C19 and now on this whole Russia/Ukraine imbroglio, once again this is an OP to destroy us and bring to an end American Exceptionalism because AE is an affront and offense to Satan and his minions.

Russia wants to expand their influence. A power and credibility vacuum in the West gave them yet another opening. They took it.

That's all that is happening. You leave an expansionist nation room to take what it wants, it's going to take it. "World Peace" is a weak and largely fictitious byproduct of hegemony.

Because Biden can be bought, he thinks everyone else can also be bought. 72 1 - It's been, what, 7 days? I don't think it's been long enough to say anything except that it's been 7 days of fighting and it's not over yet. As someone pointed out yesterday (I think), it took us about 3 weeks to take Bagdad in Iraq II - Electric Boogaloo, and - for all their propaganda - I doubt Russia is much more combat ready than we were back then, and Ukraine is probably a bit tougher of a nut to crack than Iraq was.

Will the Ukrainians fend off Vlad and team? Maybe. But one week in is WAY too early to start talking about how "bad" it's going for Russia.

2 - Russia's invasion of Ukraine is not the highest thing on my priority list just now. We have tyrants much closer at hand who need to be dealt with.

91 The safest bet for him would be to be happy with the capture of Kherson and the Donbas, declare victory, withdraw from everywhere else and lick your wounds.
++++
I don't entirely agree. Russia is embargoed and hurting and this is bad for Putin, but it may be a matter not so much of getting foreigners to relieve their sanctions, but of waiting them out. Russian energy is important for much of the world and their potash is crucial, especially in a time of fertilizer shortages. Their other mineral exports are non-trivial as well. In some respects, it looks to me like the sanctions and embargoes on Russia are just as tenuous as Russia's invasion of Ukraine. It cannot be sustained forever. Russia has a fairly small economy, all things considered - but some of what they provide is strategically vital.

Funny thing about that... the people she most wants to make miserable are the ones least likely to be made miserable by such plans.

A much higher percentage of Deplorables would be just as happy living on an acre, growing their own food, and just being left alone than would Progressives.

I drive a diesel truck and I have 160 acres of pretty good (if often dry) farmland. Give me 2 years and I'll have a redundant solar and wind setup with batteries for uninterrupted power (perfect at the individual level, breaks down once you get up above about 3 or 4 powered buildings - but that's not my problem). As long as I've got any kind of support system (I do) me and mine can survive just fine without things that would make the average Progressive think the world was ending.

But thinking things through has never been a hallmark of the Progressive mind.

The spread has gotten smaller due to efficiency. However, the cost to get fuel to the station has increased (trucking costs are rising fast). Also, in 2008, futures incorporated the knowledge that fracking was going to improve the situation, so supply could catch up. Now, considering who the decision makers are, there is no projection of things getting better. Essentially, the futures market is expecting things to get worse, with no relief in sight.

212 I'm a conspiracy buff, but I rate them on scale of how plausible they are.

With JFK, it's highly plausible that Oswald did the shooting. It was not a hard shot for anyone trained in the Marines. "Other shooters" involved is much less plausible, and a distraction from Oswald doing it.

Question is why? Oswald could have just been a nut, but his back story is highly suspicious. Most plausible is that he was a Manchurian Candidate acting on orders from Khruschev and Castro, who both had motive. It's been known that Oswald went to the Cuban embassy in Mexico City just before the shooting. It was recently declassified that he met with a KGB agent.

218 Keep your eye on Odessa. The Russians are slowly but steadily occupying Ukraine's Black Sea coast. If the Russians take Mariupol in the east (they have it surrounded now), and in the west take Odessa and push a bit more southwest to the Dneister river, they will have made Ukraine a land-locked country. All of Ukraine's seaborne imports and exports will have to go through Rumanian and Polish ports. Or Ukraine will have to pay Putin to use Russian-controlled Odessa. This will increase the cost of commodities and goods in Ukraine, and cost of its exports.

The possibility of handing Odessa back to Ukraine would be a huge bargaining chip for Putin in any cease-fire talks and any negotiations about a divided Ukraine.

244 While there are a lot of complexities in the details the basic reason there is a war in Ukraine is pretty simple and has been well known for a long time. Putin has been abundantly clear for many years that he would not accept further eastward expansion of NATO and specifically not in Georgia and Ukraine. NATO, especially our recent leadership not including Trump, did not listen.

In 2008 Putin attacked Georgia. And while he left there are still a couple autonomous and disputed regions.

In 2014 we ran a coup and took out Yanukovych and replaced him with Poreshenko and shortly thereafter Putin took Crimea.

Last October Lloyd Austin indicated that NATO was still open to Ukraine and Georgia. And now Putin is responding again by taking Ukraine.

We can argue forever about what a thug Putin is and his right to do this but the reason he is doing this is not a mystery and was entirely predictable. Putin drew a red line and we crossed it.

288 Most "crazy" world leaders were actually half rational.

Saddam Hussien is an example. The Rumalia oil field is one of the biggest in the world, and 95% in Iraq and 5% in Kuwait. The Kuwaitis went wild drinking Saddam's milk shake. He told them to knock it off and they didn't. He massed troops on the Kuwaiti border.

Then, our woman ambassador to Iraq didn't give Saddam clear direction that an invasion would be met with counter-force. Instead she went all Kumbaya. The rest is history,

289 Of the many, many easily debunked parts of the "JFK conspiracy" the funniest one - and you see this in ALL the conspiracy books - is the famous photo of the Dallas police office handing down the "real murder weapon" from the roof of the TSBD. "REEE, that's the ROOF not the 6th floor - REEE!"

Um, that's a shotgun. Which no one in the history of ever has tried to claim was the murder weapon. Not only that, it's the (shocka) same exact make and model of shotgun provided to DPD offciers at the time. Anyone who ever watched an episode of SWAT knows what the photo actually depicts.

Yet millions of dummies beleieve that "the real murder weapon was found on the roof" horseshit.

342 This whole January 6th thing is to construct the conspiracy and apply it against Trump. When they have ordinary people plead guilty to crimes, they are constructing the insurrection claim against Trump.

Under the Insurrection Act, a person convicted of insurrection is ineligible to run for public office for 10 years. That is their end goal. To disqualify Trump from running.

Now, only the President can declare an insurrection by law. Trump never declared an insurrection on January 6th, but you can be sure that when Congress is done, Biden will declare that an Insurrection took place and he will name Trump as a part of the insurrection.

Is Blackrock done buying up all of the physical assets yet using near zero interest money?

I am convinced that the markets are so rigged and the Fed is so utterly corrupt that they might raise interest rates once the investment gains curves in buying up assets meets the cost of borrowed money.

Then it doesn't make much more sense to buy up assets and THEN the Feds will raise interest rates - in effect kicking the ladder out after the oligarchs reach the top and are safely in the tree house.

The Fed and the government are hopelessly corrupt, but they are not precisely the same master, nor do they have the same masters. The Fed will bow to politics by default, but not permanently. If they decide that bowing to politics will destroy the dollar, they will act.

I could, of course, be wrong on this but I think that when push comes to shove, the Fed will defend the dollar and politics be damned. Without the dollar, the Fed is in even worse shape than the government.

Remember that at even 2% interest rates, the govt will spend more on interest than the military. Cause debt doesn't matter and stuff!
Also keep in mind that even if they go up a measly pathetic 25bps with the left hand, the right hand is still printing fake funny money to buy 100 billion dollars of mortgages from the banks. Every. Month.
One wonders at this point just what proportion of all American mortgages the fed owns by now. In guessing 25%-30%. Does that scare you?

The Fed owns a tremendous amount of assets right now since they've been engaging in QE for more than a decade. This is something a lot of people forget. It may be possible that they're going to try to deal with inflation not by raising interest rates a lot, but by draining their balance sheet. This should have happened long ago, but it didn't. They might try to sell off their assets to drain money out of the system and try to do so without disclosing what they're selling or how much they have. The size of the balance sheet is known, but its specific composition is not.

I don't think this will work, but they might try it. Shrink the money supply while leaving interest rates more or less alone and hope the primary dealers don't drive up treasury rates. No good way out.

396 Whether in Russian or Ukrainian, Kiev is disyllabic with the accent on the first syllable: KEE-yev. Rapid pronunciation may appear monosyllabic to the foreign ear.

The big dispute about city's name among the Western intelligentsia is orthographic only--the different spellings we are seeing being a result of the differences between the Ukrainian and Russian Cyrillic alphabets, and the choice of roman transliteration systems, of which there are several.

It's a storm in a samovar.

Even that is stupid. In the post-scarcity Star Trek universe, they pretend there's no money or economy because it isn't needed, but it's a lie because there is still scarcity: dilithim, their magic material that makes all that energy possible. In that world, the economy would very much exist and so would money, and it would all be dilithium-backed. It's always been a preposterous notion, even within the Star Trek universe.

True dat. Unfortunately. To get where the idiots want to go without crippling the US would require a carefully-designed 30-year plan (or more), slowly phasing non-hydrocarbon energy sources in. Such a plan would very likely not succeed in 30 years, due to some of its advanced technology and battery assumptions not coming in on schedule (if ever). The wreckers and breakers cannot wait, however. Due to delayed and lost Green money-making opportunities for the top several levels of scumbags. That's the fundamental flaw of Marxists theory: You can never eliminate scarcity.
Humans are greedy. Once you eliminate on one scarcity, we fight over what is scarce.
Think of the man 1000 years ago seeing our kitchen stuffed to the roof with food. He would be baffled we wanted anything more.
Or as Insty often relates, the most vicious fights he's seen are in the faculty lounge over nothing (they have everything they could need but not everyone can be department chair).

This is because the same media that reported Russian collusion, Trump impeachment, Covid 19 natural source, mask effectiveness, vaccine efficacy, Biden's 81 million votes, the Jan 6 false flag, ivermectin is poison, and hides news of voting irregularities, Hunter Biden's laptop, Joe Biden's sexual assault, Joe Biden's dementia, retirement home murders, and suppression of the identities of Epstein clients

ARE UNRELIABLE.

The likelihood of the contrary is more probable.

Sure. CC transaction costs have to be paid for somewhere and it is in the form of the transaction fee and interest to the bank. Since the credit card merchant agreements forbid charging more for credit card transactions (or discounting cash transactions), those prices are paid by everyone regardless. If I could get a cash discount that exceeded by credit card rebate, I'd be paying cash for gasoline. I can't. Even at stations where there is a cash price vs. credit card price, the spread is usually smaller than the 3% I get on that card. That card has the rebate *only* for gas paid at the pump, so that's all I use it for.

You've been misled. When you have a credit card, your behavior is reflected in the credit report, in two ways:
1. Payment history (do you pay on time?)
2. Credit usage (do you have large balances?)

If you don't use the card at all, it might not report (though it will factor into utilization overall) but if you use it and pay it off, your payment behavior will be reflected.

You have been mislead.

If you have a mortgage and/or car payments and do not miss any of the payments those loans (credit) go towards your score. Revolving credit, credit cards mostly, also goes towards your score.

I have two mortgages and no car payments. I have (with my wife) 3 credit cards that are almost always paid off on time.

Something that makes it *really* hard to get a score north of 800 is not having a mortgage or a car loan. My credit was like 740 or something like that when I bought a car. It ended up being cheaper to finance it (the finance arm of the manufacturer had a kickback) and pay it off after three months. I did that. I paid something like 85% of the balance on the first day I could to minimize interest costs and then let it roll off and end after three months. I ended up paying 70 bucks in interest to get a $500 kickback - easy money.

But because I then had a "real loan" instead of a credit card, my credit score went up over 800 over the next year.
