Tonight's ONT Is Tripping The Light Fantastic

Hello gray box people! Welcome to Thursday night. Down here in God's country, the weather is definitely turning to spring. The “average date of last frost” is March 15, which mean all my warm weather crops can go out. I'm not used to planting stuff this early, but the cold hardy veggies have been in the ground for a month. Anyone got any spring plans? Maybe planning to hit the road and see this great country in comfort and style?

Inflation

Let's talk about inflation.

Inflation.jpg

Not an obvious misprint like the picture above, but real, honest to goodness inflation. Where have you seen the worst examples of it? How is it impacting your lives? I know that personally speaking, February was the worst month I've had in my career. Now normally in an economic downturn I stay pretty busy, people are looking for ways to trim their insurance bills while still maintaining the protection they need, but last month I had more than 20 people make appointments to discuss their options and then stand me up when I tried to keep them. Ghosting appointments happens in this business, but not at that rate, and I'm wondering: Is it just an aberration or are folks deciding they have to forego insurance entirely? I dunno, but it's weird that they would make appointments in the first place if that's what they're thinking. So I throw it to the Horde: How have your buying habits changed since the start of the year?

It's The Culture

It's the Culture, Stupid

It is important to note that the country moved center-right in both of those elections despite all of the pressure from these cultural curators to shame them not to -- from the "hate has no home here" signs in neighbors' windows to the stigmas about masks to the attempts to criminalize all parents (not just the handful that got out of hand) for expressing their concerns at school board meetings.

People grew weary of having everything they thought, did, bought and wore being called racist. That goes for black people, white people and Hispanics who are deeply frustrated that our politics and culture are constantly trying to pit them against each other -- people are simply just done.

Ask any suburban parent (mother or father) who has spent hours driving back and forth to swim meets and soccer practices for their daughters how they feel about women's sports today that have biological males crushing females in meets and tournaments.

If you think that hasn't pushed them center-right, you haven't listened to them.

If you think the violent crime epidemic in our cities hasn't pushed people center-right, then you haven't paid attention to the diversity of new gun owners who purchased their first guns in the past two years to protect their homes and their families -- or have moved out of those cities.

There's an interesting point that is mentioned in passing but not specifically: In an election which the country as a whole moved pretty significantly to the right, Joe Biden “got” 81 million votes. Makes you go “Hmmmm”, doesn't it?

Related: Russian UN Ambassador Says Trump Was “Legitimately Elected President” But Was Then “Overthrown”

Now, what the Reds say is immaterial to me. Frankly, if this war winds up crashing the ruble and cratering Russia's economy, it couldn't happen to a better group of folks. But it is interesting that the Russian ambassador said this (which the article of course calls ”parroting Trump's false election fraud claims” ) on the floor of the UN.

Thursday Night Game

Juvenile subway art philosophy or not, there are a lot of words with other words in them. You can't have a slaughter without laughter, and we all want to know who puts the fun in funeral, but what are some of your favorites?

Covid News

Official data: Fully vaccinated people account for 9 of 10 COVID deaths

Small sample size and a brief reporting period, so make of it what you will. I will note that the UK is 75% vaccinated, if the vaccine did absolutely nothing you'd expect 75% of deaths to be in vaxxed folks. Any number higher than this is....curious.

Musical Interlude

Of course, none of that matters because Joey Choo-choo has now solved the whole issue, so tonight's musical selection goes out to our old pal COVID-19, from its friends in the mainstream media:

Sorry chum, you're last year's news. Don't let the door hit you where the Wuhan virologists split ya'.

Wait! Not So Fast!

Before we say goodbye to COVID, we should remember this one last bit:

Did You Notice What Was Ridiculous About FEMA's Nuclear Attack Advice?

In the event of a nuclear attack, this is the US government's advice is to......maintain social distancing:

“Go to the basement or middle of the building, Stay away from the outer walls and roofs. Try to maintain a distance of at least six feet between yourself and people who are not part of your household. If possible, wear a mask if you’re sheltering with people who are not a part of your household.”

Where's the part about putting a textbook over your head?

Libs On Guns

Op-ed fails to understand realities around guns and schools

Not everyone understands why we’re fighting for that, though, which is made clear by a student op-ed titled: “Protect Students, Not Guns.”

Let’s start with this framing. While the author may not have penned this particular headline–those are often changed by editors, after all–the idea here is that it’s an either/or thing and everyone sees it that way.

We don’t. We see it as protecting students with guns.

See, shootings are happening despite all the various gun control laws on the books. We recognize that won’t change, either. So, we want to empower good, decent folks to be able to protect themselves with their own guns and, by extension, protect others.

There's never been a school shooting that was stopped by a strongly worded editorial.

Mister We Could Use A Man Like Warren G Harding Again

How Liberals Unfairly Maligned Warren G. Harding

Harding came into office with a country in the throes of real problems: the end of World War I, the fight over the League of Nations, Woodrow Wilson’s stroke, the terrible and violent events of 1919, the severe economic downturn of 1920. The tribulations were serious yet he returned the country to normalcy in short order:

–His program of laissez faire conservatism revived the American economy from the “forgotten depression,” leading to the most prosperous decade in US history, an era with average annual growth rates of 7 percent. He slashed taxes, regulations, and government spending, and created the Budget Bureau, which gave the federal government a comprehensive budget for the first time. The country ran a budget surplus every year and one-third of the national debt was paid off. Statistics also reveal that every class of citizen benefited throughout the “Roaring Twenties.”

– After several years of unrest, Harding restored domestic tranquility, ushering in an era of peace and prosperity. He pardoned war resisters, pushed for anti-lynching legislation, and urged equal rights for black Americans, the first 20th century president to do so. He created the Veterans Bureau to help the hundreds of thousands of wounded American servicemen returning from the war in France.

I stand by my oft repeated opinion that Calvin Coolidge was this country's greatest president since Washington, but Cal and Harding were peas in a pod. Coolidge's presidency continued his predecessor's policies (without the scandals, which Harding had little to with anyway) in the way Bush the Elder's didn't. Interesting factoid: Harding and Coolidge responded to the 1920 depression in exactly the right way: they let it clear out the garbage in the system and the resulting bounce back is now known as the Roaring 20s. The biggest dissenting voice in his cabinet came from his Sec Commerce, who wanted a full blown government intervention – price and wage controls, massive spending, etc..- and Harding said no. Who was this misguided man? Herbert Hoover, who became president when Coolidge didn't run for reelection. When Black Friday happened, he got to do all of those things – and created the Great Depression. FDR was just Hoover on steroids.

Tonight's ONT has been brought to you by the Jesse Kelly Show:

Or as Andrew Breitbart more succinctly said: “Fuck you. War.”

Hoover was, let's face it, a complete and total idiot. His pollical instincts were bad, he had no ideas except government trade interventions, and he was aloof to the suffering of the common man. And, as we all know, it only takes one idiot to ruin it for conservatives for decades. The Left can elect shithead after doofus shithead and never suffer. We get one shot at it. Thanks Hoover...

Well, you eat some of the bad meat and supplement with edamame, lentils, black beans, green peas, hubbard squash, brussel sprouts, etc (all of those have 5g of protein or more per serving with edamame at 33.15g in 1 cup)...

You don't give up the meat, but if it's too pricey to buy what you like or a full meal amount, it's better to not skip it entirely, but to buy what you can and supplement with the cheaper veg right now (b/c all veg is cheaper than beef right now)...

I said no, and I managed NOT to say that I want the retard out of the White House.
Posted by: nerdygirl at March 03, 2022 10:26 PM (+lVUW)

I had mine today, too. I had to do 2 "pre check in" questionnaires - both focused on depression (one was all depression and one had a section). It must be the current "must check" item for annuals this year.

I know I’ve posted this before here, but it bears repeating. This is classic madness of crowds. Back in the seventies, Manitoba, Canada went a little crazy about kids possibly going blind due to looking directly at the sun during an upcoming total eclipse. Then, they went a lot crazy.

The advice went from "tell kids not to look at the sun without protection” to “only watch the eclipse on television” to “cover school windows with blackout curtains and keep the children inside”. And what if there’s a fire?

a thought - if we're headed into a very high inflation environment, and I think we are, it could be a good move to buy that car and borrow as much as you can while interest rates are still low, for as long a term as you can. In the late 70's, a lot of people who moved early made a killing this way.

High inflation environments create perverse incentives where everything becomes very counterintuitive. Those who take on the most debt and take the greatest risks tend to do the best, provided that they continually reinvest the proceeds.

303 While many liberal politicians are starting to back stricter gun control legislation, there lacks a direct focus on the protection of students which has resulted in over 292,000 students witnessing this sort of gun-driven terror at school before even reaching college-age. Lawmakers need to narrow their immediate focus toward banning guns from school grounds, K-12 and college campuses alike, especially as 2021 saw the largest number of school shootings in the past two decades.

This is a bullshit statistic. If there is a shooting within 1000 feet of a school it is counted as a school shooting, and all of the students inside counted as "exposed to gun violence"

I know what Putin should be worrying about: the Russian Stock Market has been shut down all week, and no one knows when or how it will reopen; people across the country are desperate for cash of any kind, as electronic access to funds is shut down and the ruble collapses; and internal inflation is already at 61% and accelerating. Russia's private sector is collapsing, across the board. So far, the Russian Government's only response has been to start arresting anyone internally who dares to say that something is wrong.

Sadly, the Ukraine will probably not survive this war, but increasingly, it's starting to look like Russia will not survive it, either. I can only pray that we do.

377 Howdy, All,

Honest question here:

When I was but a wee bairn, the movie "10" came out in 1979-80, in which Dudley Moore's character was infatuated with Bo Derek's character, whom the former deemed to be the perfect woman, or a "10" on a scale of 1 to 10. After this, a sufficiently hot woman was deemed to be a "10," and all women were judged accordingly, with a "1" thus designating an utter dog.

However, in recent threads on this site, this ranking seems to have been flipped, with many attractive women, e.g., Liz Taylor in Butterfield 8, being described as a "1," when clearly the commentor means to praise her beauty. So, does a "1" (formerly, a dog) now designate what used to be a "!0" on the scale of feminine pulchritude, with a a"10" now designating a dog?

396 With Spring descending, I finished pruning the front hedges this afternoon. They had all gotten overgrown. I did the backsides (facing house) back in late January and left the front sides (facing street) until another time then got lazy. February was a lot of cold overcast, damp chilly days. Now the sun is back and afternoon temps are moving up from 40's to 80's.

I hope I didn't wait too late and screwed up the bushes' Spring growth spurt. I need them to fill in from all the hacking I did.

After the end of WWII, with us on top, our guys set up the current international settlements regime (Bretton Woods), with the dollar as the international reserve currency. This means that international payments are settled in dollars, and the dollar was supposed to be pegged to gold, internationally.

Internally, there never a gold standard, but externally, it was. Until there was a run, and Tricky Dick ended that.

But the dollar remained the international reserve currency. This is what has allowed us to be so fiscally and monetarily irresponsible.

These lunatics are going to end that. If the dollar loses reserve status, we're all royally fucked. I mean Wiemar fucked.

Russia and Ukraine will generally offer similar info in terms of reliability - limited, to none. It is indeed the way of their people.

Exactly. Though things did not reach truly reckless levels until relatively recently.

When the Euro first launched, I was among those who had (very, very faint) hope that it would succeed to some extent as a reserve currency, precisely because of the discipline that might re-introduce to US fiscal policy (at this point, it's more like "dysfunctional fiscal culture").

Oh well.

If this situation goes on very long, which I rather doubt, it may result in many countries thinking about back-ups and diversification when it comes to global financial mechanisms. And now there are enough players, of sufficient heft, to make such a trend significant.

Haven't had it yet, it's next on my list (and thanks to the above noted pricing situation I'll be getting it tomorrow or Saturday). Barbados, FourSquare/Richard Seale distillery, so no sugars of additives. Supposed to have some natural sweetness, be a bit lighter in body than Seale's 12-year, which is good and also usually under $30 - and which I'm about to pour.

Anyway, two inexpensive Barbados "pure" rums that edge a bit towards bourbon-ish but still very much rum. And that price for Doorly's should pass muster with the War Department.

Many cars nowadays you can't siphon. The filler neck has a siphon trap. It's either disconnect the fuel pump downstream hose and collect it as it shoots out (ignition on), or drill holes into the gas tank. We'd better start up armoring the gas tank.

I listened to and hated that song very much. Also the video. On the artistic merits alone. He's a fucking pussy with a whiny voice and he's not a good singer. The only place his voice would work is as a reedy castrato among many other, richer voices in some rich medieval Italian's choir. The instrumental is boring and desultory hipster pablum. Practically unbearable. If you think of it without the vocals, it's the sort of thing you'd hear in the rec area of a nursing home as you slip into the cold embrace of the grave.

But the subject matter is just as vile. It's the tale of a freaky looking borderline homo with Stage IV necrotic soydick, who treated some unfortunate lady like shit, so she dumped his ass. And now he's like "waaaah, wah, how come you don't like me no more, deeerrrrrp, and where are my records, bitch?! You know... Those Mumford & Sons records, waaaah!"

Gassed up the car on Tuesday at $4.25 a gallon (at the cheapest place around, one city over); today intended to top off the tank as I don't let it drop much below half a tank these days (figuring the price is just going to go up-up-up!) and gas at the cheap place is now $4.55. At this rate, I expect it to be up over $5 a gallon by next Wednesday.

Just reading (and this you probably won't hear the MSM talking about). Russia is alleging that Ukraine was working on nuclear weapons secretly.

It's not a trivial process by a long shot to get weapons grade material out of civilian power reactors. It can be done, but it would be obvious you were attempting that. At least as I understand things.

Unless they had some clandestine help giving them some material.

Then he's got to do something about NATO. Three of the successor countries - the Baltics - are part of NATO. And a fourth, Moldova, will likely unify with a NATO member - Romania - if Russia doesn't use its puppet autonomous region there as an excuse to invade.

Here's an interesting factoid regarding Moldova - the former Soviet republic apparently owes Russia's Gazprom a rather large bill, because the country's Russian-backed autonomous region isn't paying its gas bills.

At the behest of the Obama admin. who assured them that they didn't need them, because Obama said so.
Stupid them, they listened to Obama.

To know Mannix is apparently eventually want to kill him, and with elaborate plots.

Watching an episode tonight, one of Mannix's Korean War mates is coming to kill 'em. And there was another who did the same thing.

And Mannix has old college and high school buddies who come back to kill him.

I mean Mannix is one tough SOB, a good guys, but I think he needs to examine this aspect. He must just rub people the wrong way.

554 I highly doubt that, given their embarrassing denuclearization deal, the Ukrainians suddenly grew the balls and brains to secretly spin up a dual use reactor.

But if they did, more power to them. So to speak.

It would be about impossible for the Ukes to spin up something like that on their own without being obvious. They'd need help -- they don't have the means to do a covert weapons program.

This is most likely all just Russian propaganda.

557 When we fight for our country we are simply continuing the efforts of those who preceded us to ensure the Republic's survival. It is our heritage and cannot be allowed to die.

This is why my belief in my country is unshakeable.

As I understand it, you can get weapons grade material out of a civilian power reactor, but it's not trivial, and the things you have to do would be obvious to anyone watching.

You've got short cycle it, for one thing, IIRC. What you'd need to do to get weapons material out would be very inefficient for power production.

559 Quite simply, we have to purge the Dinner Circuit Officer's Corps. Regardless of branch.

DCOC.

563 Today sucked-- septic tank needs pumped (since yesterday evening) and they can't get here until tomorrow. Rained all day, of course, as I had to dig around to expose the lid. I set up the portable commode last night.

Also, an augur motor died on the pellet stove today-- had a spare on hand, but the connectors were different so had to change them. Also, room-air blower wasn't working too well so pulled it and cleaned all the crap out of it. Disassembly is the *easy* part LOL. Such a cramped space!

Got a headache from leaning downward for too long, so not really bothered that I can't do the dishes or laundry yet.

Oh, and I gave up alcohol for Lent. That's why everything's going to sh1t.

565 552, Gourmand du Jour. I think it was Clinton, not Obama. I will not look it up but it was ages ago. I say screw the Ruskies.

I have studied their history formally in high school and college. No doubt their history is second only to Western Civ. Russian history has so much to it, so many contributions. But in the end, there is next to nil you would want to emulate. In a way, studying Russian history is a way to scare people straight

571 We actually have 2 separate septic systems because the house got an addition in the 70s. Original system still works but has a small tank so only 1 toilet goes to it. The sink and washer drain to a flowerbed.

Kitchen and upstairs bath go to new system, but hubby cannot make it upstairs "in time" so-- porto commode for him.

I *could* do laundry and dishes, but I'm claiming that I can't. So there, LOL

Coolidge is my favorite.

579 Mornin', all,

I'd always read that Hoover was accused of doing "nothing" about the onset of the Great Depression, not that he tried strong government intervention. Of course the same works always praised FDR for his strong government intervention.

I need to read more about Harding and Coolidge.
