The Morning Rant – Friday 03/04/2022

JOURNALISTS ATTEMPT FOREIGN PRONUNCIATIONS: KEEV, CUTTER, AND NEE-KUH-DAAG-WUH

Other than being adamant that no US blood should be spilled in Ukraine, I have little to say about that conflict, because I do not understand the geo-politics of the region. (Neither do the tens of millions of foreign policy experts on Facebook and Twitter.) I pray for all the innocents in harm’s way, and I’ll be thrilled if this results in Putin’s political demise. I have special enmity for Putin because he funds what I perceive to be the greatest threat to my liberty, specifically, radical environmental groups who seek to impose energy scarcity on America.

That said, can I take a moment to chuckle about our pretentious media suddenly adopting a new pronunciation for Kiev, excuse me, “Kyiv,” which is how the city is spelled in Ukrainian, except not really, because the actual Ukrainian spelling uses the cyrillic alphabet, and looks something like “Київ.”

Anyhow, our sophisticated, cosmopolitan journalists are all now saying “Keev” rather than “Key-Ev.” Being a Google-trained scholar of Slavic languages, I just researched how Kyiv is actually pronounced in Ukrainian. Apparently, it’s supposed to be more like “Key-EVE.” Oh well, at least our television journalists are trying.

Do you remember a few years back during one of our many Middle Eastern wars, when journalists in near-unison discovered a new pronunciation for Qatar? It actually evolved over a few short weeks from “kah-TAR” to “KOTT-ur” to “Gutter” to “Cutter.” With so many options, I choose to pronounce it the same way Horshack pronounces Mr. Kotter’s last name.

But my all-time favorite episode of “journalists attempt a foreign pronunciation” was when Nicaragua was in the news due to President Reagan funneling arms to its anti-communist guerrillas. (Imagine that, we armed the good guys rather than actually fighting their battles for them.) The very cosmopolitan journalists of that era opened up their “Spanish For Dummies” book, and suddenly started pronouncing Nicaragua as “NEE-kuh-DAAG-wuh.”

I just hope there isn’t a war in Mexico any time soon. I’m not sure my ears can handle all the TV news readers suddenly sounding like Peggy Hill when talking about “MEH-Hee-coe.”

JOURNALISTS vs STATISTICS

Speaking of journalists who aren’t very bright…

Ace had a little fun yesterday mocking the “fact checkers” at Politifact, who ruled Maria Bartiromo’s claim that “We have doubled our (oil) imports from Russia in the last year” to be “Mostly False.”

Politifact - Bartiromo.JPG

As Ace noted, Politifact acknowledges that crude oil imports have technically more than doubled.

The U.S. more than doubled its crude oil imports from Russia, to about 208,000 barrels a day in the first 11 months of 2021, from 76,000 barrels a day in 2020.

Politifact’s awful fact-check goes beyond silly partisanship. This article sounds like it was written by someone who does not even have an elementary understanding of math and statistics.

“But Bartiromo’s broader point was about the extent of U.S. reliance on Russian oil, which remains fairly modest. Russia accounted for only about 3% of overall U.S. crude oil imports in 2021 — a 2 percentage point increase from 2020.”

In a battle between statistics and prominent journalists, the journalists don’t stand a chance. It’s actually kind of funny that we have elite “fact checkers” who think “doubled” is just a euphemism for “a really big amount,” and since Politifact determined that the increase in crude oil imports was not really big, they ruled that “doubled” is therefore a “mostly false” description.

It’s also quite scary that most of our political class, including NeverTrump faux-conservatives, holds such excruciatingly ignorant journalists like this in high regard.

*****

That’s it for today. How ‘bout we end today’s time together with a little bit of Peggy Hill’s confidently incorrect Spanish?

Uhhh, they *really* suck at math. Hell, not even math, but just arithmetic.

So oil imports from Russia more than doubled, but the Russian share of our overall imports increased 3x (from 1% to 3%), meaning that Russia increased both its nominal exports *and* their overall share of our oil import market.

I knew people who lived and worked in Kharkov, I've talked to them on the phone, I know how they, native Kharkovians, pronounce the name of the city. It's "kar'-kov". That's how residents and native speakers pronounce it.

Now, however all the Western newsreaders, without exception, insist on pronouncing it "kar-keev'". They're fucking wrong and it pisses me off, admittedly more than it should.

171 Willowed from the Morning Report:

396 Whether in Russian or Ukrainian, Kiev is disyllabic with the accent on the first syllable: KEE-yev. Rapid pronunciation may appear monosyllabic to the foreign ear.

The big dispute about city's name among the Western intelligentsia is orthographic only--the different spellings we are seeing being a result of the differences between the Ukrainian and Russian Cyrillic alphabets, and the choice of roman transliteration systems, of which there are several.

It's a storm in a samovar.

Notice all these people with nice sensibilities about the pronunciation of foreign toponyms always say Paris, not Paree, Rome, not Roma, Warsaw, not Varshava, and Moscow, not Moskva. A cultural bludgeon should be consistent to be effective.

182 In a battle between statistics and prominent journalists, the journalists don't stand a chance. It's actually kind of funny that we have elite "fact checkers" who think "doubled" is just a euphemism for "a really big amount," and since Politifact determined that the increase in crude oil imports was not really big, they ruled that "doubled" is therefore a "mostly false" description.
--

It's not a "fact" check -- how could it be a "fact" check when it's factually correct?

It's a "we believe this true fact will be used in a way that hurts our political allies unless we rate it false" check. That way, the "fact" check can serve to throttle discussion of the true fact on social media.

186 Is it true that the different types of oil require specific refineries?

Posted by: Captain Hate

They require different refining, but most refineries can be turned around to handle them. This means changing the piping and heating elements to crack the crude into the different products. The refinery is essentially a machine that must be retooled for each different crude that is input. Most refineries turn around a few times per year, most all of them do so at least for the summer and winter blends. Some crudes, like Venezuela's, are very sour and require so much change that specific refineries are set up just for them.

Full story:
Raccoon in yard, goes after dogs, get dogs off him and he attacks me ($20K ER bill, fortunately have good insurance). After that, guy you're in for it now. Dogs deal with him.

Week later big dog loses use of legs. $6K in vet bills (no insurance), may be 'coonhound paralysis' if so it's 2-3 month temporary. Neurologist in a week, PT once he starts to get some strength back.

He's too old to be fighting raccoons anymore.

Yes, refineries are usually optimized to run a certain type of crude. But, they can buy all types and blend them to get what they want. Sometimes you get a "distressed cargo" that's being sold so cheap you have to buy it, even it your refinery struggles with it.

One of the problems the US had recently was most refineries were optimized for heavy sour crudes, thinking all the light sweet was tapped. The the shale boom happened and the heavy sour refineries struggled with the light sweet stuff.

What a slog. This is yet another example of "oil is gasoline is energy." No, it isn't. Oil is central to every aspect of life, from the clothes on your back to the food in your refrigerator to the lightswitch on your wall to the gas in your tank to everything else. This kind of "I directly interact with oil in the form of gasoline and therefore oil is gasoline and therefore price doesn't matter and in fact more is better" is so stupid it burns.

325 I will agree, though, that people who bought huge gas-guzzling vehicles should not complain about high fuel prices. (Especially if they voted for The Turnip.) They made their choice. "What, did you think the price of gas was going to stay low forever?"

In 2008, when gas soared to nearly $4.00 here, people were dumping their big SUVs and trying to get into more fuel-efficient cars. Once the scare was over, it was back to giant SUVs again. If you need a big vehicle -- really need it to transport people and things -- fine. To have one just because your neighbors do and they expect it of you as well is silly.

Posted by: TheJamesMadison, learning Bushido with Kurosawa at March 04, 2022 11:54 AM (LvTSG)
++++
It's not direct payment. It's below-market leases and access to oil owned by the people. Those leases are auctioned in fixed venues to enrich the government's rich cronies in Big Oil. Beyond that - which alone is probably enough - there are the various hidden subsidies for the oil producers. Maintaining massive road networks to enable low-density suburban housing is a key factor in the constant demand increase for fuels and therefore oil. Housing policy and zoning are key contributors to these kinds of "hidden subsidies." Then there are the cronies who pay off the government to make sure fuel economy standards are not as high as they could be and who dodge around requirements by classifying various passenger vehicles as trucks. This also increases demand and acts as a hidden cross-subsidy.

Virtually every aspect of American domestic policy, from zoning and city planning to industrial regulation to trade to the war on railroads is designed to enrich Big Oil.

To me, this is like saying no one who owns a large house can complain about the cost of heating or cooling them, if energy prices skyrocket. Why not? But what's the point of America if we're going to live like that?

Of course they are. But they need to do their research first and decide whether a lower mpg is worth the tradeoff for more cargo capacity or whatever. Don't buy a giant vehicle that gets 12 mpg w/ a tailwind (I'm just guessing at a number here), a fact easily available on the 'Net, and then complain how much it costs to fill it up. Even if the fuel were $2/gallon, these kind of people would complain.

I knew the Buick LaCrosse's mpg ratings (21 city/32 highway, I think) before I bought it. I decided that was a good tradeoff for a comfortable ride and power enough to climb hills without downshifting.
