Wyoming Senate Passes Bill to Defund Gender Studies and Women's Studies at University of Wyoming

What a terrible thing to say.

Lawmakers in the Republican-controlled state Senate, by a 16-14 vote, adopted the amendment to defund the department, decrying it as a politically motivated and biased program.

State Sen. Charles Scott, the chairman of the legislative body's Education Committee, said he couldn't see "any academic legitimacy" to the department, which he called "an extremely biased, ideologically driven program."

"I think we'll hear complaints about how we're interfering in the internals of the university, but I think what we're really doing is sending them a message that they need to clean up their act in terms of the quality of the instruction that's being given," Scott said.

The amendment was proposed by state Sen. Cheri Steinmetz, who said in a floor speech that she submitted the amendment to defund the academic department because her "conscience" wouldn't let her sleep "without addressing it here in this body today."

I completely support this. They need to write the bill to stop the university from evading the ban, which they will do, by seeding "gender studies" professors throughout all other departments. That is, they'll take the old gender studies department and just reassign all the staff to positions in the other departments.

Screenshot (1633).png

Yeah, what a disaster.

These are not real "studies," this is not real academic work, this does not "contribute to the net store of human knowledge," as actual academic work is supposed to do.

This is simply Marxist vocational training to prepare you for work in the Democrat Party, in associated organizations like Planned Parenthood, or in the leftwing propaganda media.

If you want that training, apply instead to Jezebel State College or the University of the Huffington Post.

Great Moments in Gender Studies: Dog Parks are manifestations of rape culture and oppression.

The PhD in feminist studies writes that dog parks are "petri dishes for canine 'rape culture.'" Never mind that dogs are, y'know, animals. Just go with it:

They offer a very public view into the ways human companions foster and perpetuate masculinist systems of communal oppression across species and in public spaces. The cultural norms operating within and upon these spaces form microcultures where acceptable and unacceptable behavior in human communities may be reflected in the way human companions construct their interactions with dogs, particularly in regard to rape culture and queering, and a-/moral interpretations of such behaviors and their human analogues under the assumptions of rape culture.

"In essence," Wilson adds, dogs parks "become rape-condoning spaces in which human rape culture plays out by the moral permissiveness we extend to animals."

Now, that's one of the so-called "Sokal Squared" Hoax papers, written to prove that gender studies are a joke and gender studies journals will publish an-ny-thin-nguh, no matter how asinine.

And it worked: This fantastically absurd piece of shit was published as "real science" in the field of gender studies.

Well, it's not a "piece of shit" -- it's a brilliant, brilliant parody of gender studies "science," in which the author claims to have documented like "over 10,300 instances of intracanine unconsented nasal-anal sniffing" or crap like that. I mean, absolutely absurd stuff that anyone who isn't absolutely stupid and/or ideologically lobotomized would immediately recognize as crank bullshit.

This is MAD Magazine level stuff. And it was published. In an "academic" jounal.

And they would have kept on publishing for years except the right-leaning press noticed how bizarre and unbelievable these papers were and did some digging and the hoaxers had to confess and expose the hoax before they intended.

It wasn't the Gender Studies scholars who figured out they were being punked -- it was the Wall Street Journal.

One of their papers got a Prize! For being among the best Gender Studies papers of the year!

Oh: For those of you who don't know, journals represent the cutting edge and the prestige of a field of study. So when you punk a gender studies journal into publishing this absolute nonsense, that means your garbage was better than 90% of all submissions to this "prestigious" journal of gender studies "research."

That means that the Helen Plukrose, Peter Boghosian, and James Lindsey are in fact among the world's very most serious and prestigious Gender Studies researchers, and they did it as a joke after "studying" the field for about a month.

Someone might say, "But they're not real Gender Studies researchers, their papers were made up and silly!"

But the point of their exercise was to prove that "normal" Gender Studies papers are just made up and silly.

They followed the normal rules of the game. They won.

198 Glaciers, gender, and science: A feminist glaciology framework for global environmental change research

Glaciers are key icons of climate change and global environmental change. However, the relationships among gender, science, and glaciers - particularly related to epistemological questions about the production of glaciological knowledge - remain understudied. This paper thus proposes a feminist glaciology framework with four key components: 1) knowledge producers; (2) gendered science and knowledge; (3) systems of scientific domination; and (4) alternative representations of glaciers. Merging feminist postcolonial science studies and feminist political ecology, the feminist glaciology framework generates robust analysis of gender, power, and epistemologies in dynamic social-ecological systems, thereby leading to more just and equitable science and human-ice interactions.

The proliferation of "studies" and the reduction in core courses, has destroyed the veneer of "well educated", and decreased standards.

------------------

Its a great start and with low hanging fruit.

1. Its a way of attacking a leftist institution without attacking colleges and universities directly, which most people support (unfortunately). But small cuts eventually lead to big ones.

2. It sends a signal to out of states that wackos are not welcome. "I'm not going to go to Wyoming until they restore academic freedom" Exactly the type of people you do not want in your state.

257 I'd also like the states to seriously consider limiting foreign students and minimizing out of state students. Their "mandate" is not global education, or is it? Administrators need a short leash. Posted by: CN The First
-------------------
The reason that they don't is because the foreign and out of state students pay above and beyond what the legislature gives them. State universities are often in the situation where each additional student admitted at the low state rate costs them more than the marginal tuition that they bring in. So they go fishing where each additional marginal student brings in twice or more revenue. As a percentage of revenue, state funding of students has declined as spending on corrections and Medicaid have increased. The top heavy administrative staff mandated by all sorts of laws has not helped. Most colleges spend less than 50 percent on teaching staff with most of the personnel spending being for administrative and support staff. That is partially reimbursed by the various fees that colleges tack on such as activities fees, etc. At most colleges, the sports teams also are a loss and have to be subsidized either directly via fees or indirectly.

Better still, it will then tell me that the first violation that I fixed needs to be refixed again. The complete video started out at 650mb and is down to 578mb. It takes anywhere between 2-6 hours to upload the complete video, so often I will make the requested changes and just upload the offending section by itself to see if the changes are okay. Much quicker, only a 10-20mb section. Youtube will say they are, so I upload the full video, only to have it say, "that section we said was okay by itself, it isn't" in the full length video.

Rant over.

I know this. My husband is a retired academic. Administrators want high salaries, and foreign funds get money via tuition and donations, bribes like "endowed professorships". States need to rein this in and terminate the administrators who refuse to prefer the students from the states paying the bills. The universities were established for the people of the state, not the administrators and their in house clique.

Montana got a 2nd congressional seat after the 2020 census. The western side of the state's seat will probably be blue. The eastern side will be red. So the state went from 1 red seat to 1 red seat and 1 blue seat.

And it keeps electing that fat fuck Tester over and over, as well as recently having had a 2 term Dem governor.

It's already blue-ish. It's on the way to becoming deep blue.

332 I know this.
Posted by: CN The First

Unfortunately, costs for education have escalated far faster than the rate of inflation and it has not been by and large payments to faculty that have done it.

Instead, the administrative bloat occurs in the executive suites in part because of various federal laws plus the entertainment world where essentially quite a few colleges have become luxury resorts with rock climbing walls, lazy rivers, etc. The staff required to run these programs are immense and that means the administrators are always looking for any source of revenue to sustain and expand their kingdom. College admin aren't in the business of teaching anymore but fleecing the students of their money.

I was asked what I majoring in and replied that it was an independent program with a triple major in history, philosophy, and political science. The judge said oh, so you're going to law school and I said what else would I do with that. The court clerks laughed. The judge and the lawyers all nodded.

I got out of jury duty since it was a capital case and I said that I did not agree that voluntary intoxication at the time of the incident was a sufficient factor to find a defendant not competent for execution purposes. The waste of DNA strangled a 12 year old girl then set her body on fire. He was in the courtroom and I swear he was demon possessed. I could feel evil from him from across the room. Yep, Shepard and his killer were both meth dealers (and meth users), and former lovers. He was killed after an argument about a drug delivery. The b.s. about it being a gay "hate crime" by homophobic Wyoming rednecks was a media fabrication.

The real story is told in the book called The Book of Matt, by Stephen Jiminez, who is also gay and who took a lot of shit from the radical left for writing about what really happened.

403 There needs to be some feedback into the system. Do we really need 500 sociologists graduating every year from any given college? 500 anthropologists? Etc. The number of students allowed to major in such subjects should reflect the number who get employed to use those subjects. Posted by: Deplorable Jay Guevara
--------------
The only true feedback is purely private education with no state or federal mandated services beyond regular public accommodation and hiring laws.
That being said, one proposal ties the federal loan system to student repayments with universities required to write off debts to unemployed students. The risk there is that universities will prefer even more the self funded students for admission.
Essentially, the problem is the same as K12. What institutions prefer to produce versus what the job market requires. Then you have politics added on top via various federal and state mandates and discrimination laws. One dismal swamp is that of technical education where institutions keep trying to convert it into classroom bound instruction instead of the hands on laboratories required as well as keeping them up to date.

I would look more to the military (at least the way it used to be) which does a far superior job in many technical fields than civilian institutions. Course, their students are stuck as well by military commitment and self selected.

I'd argue otherwise. It does not "contribute to the net store of human knowledge" but it also does not simply pump out glassy-eyed Marxist automata. They actively *erode* the net store of human knowledge by deliberately confounding the truth, telling lies and gatekeeping against any opposition.

The wonders of online will never reach the hype. Simply put, would you trust an online visit with a doctor versus physical exam. Which would you think both doctor and patient would prefer? Education is similar and more or less it is not a science but an art. And that art is confounded by the need for the instructor and the students need to communicate. Many brilliant scholars have a simple inability to communicate with average students both from an academic preparation standpoint but also cultural and social differences. Military once did a study and the optimum IQ spread for officers and enlisted is about 30 IQ points. If the officer is above that, the enlisted understand poorly and if below, the results can also be suboptimal as the troops have to respect the officer.

_____________

A lot of a university's operating budget comes from overhead on STEM grants. Get a grant for $1 million? The university typically takes $666,000 right off the top. So you only have a third of the grant to ... you know ... actually do the research. The rest goes to support administrators, bullshit departments, etc. as well as physical plant (which is justified, of course). Capping overhead rates to the actual costs of doing research would be a big step in the right direction.

Yeah, May 1. Mine is a little under $5k, I'm going to pay it off on April 30.

544 505 Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds who is giving the Republican rebuttal tonight just singed a 3.9% state flat tax.

If it was zero before her signing, she's a clown.

If not, why not get rid of the state tax?

545 >>>Milk, now, is "problematic." Fucking milk.

Their is some teeth there. The *last* distinct human trait to develop during our "age of evolution" which ended about 10,000 years ago was lactase persistence. A genetic mutation that caused a mammal specifically a human to produce lactase into adulthood, and consequently could digest lactose into adulthood. The gene of lactose tolerance if you will. This mutation originated somewhere in Europe most likely on the island of Britain and was such a huge survival advantage that is spread quickly. But not quickly enough for the end of the age of human evolution was right around the corner. So genetically speaking if you are of linage that goes back to either Britain or Norse your odds of being lactose tolerant is high, and it drops off as your lineage becomes distant.

547 Yep. A properly motivated self-starter could probably learn a Ph.D. level of engineering or science knowledge just from online resources.

College degrees were the original vaxx passports - you didn't need them until the order went out that you did. I dropped out of college and owned a nice house and a new car before I was 25.

In any case, the American Chemical Society exists to take dues from industrial chemists to give awards to academic chemists.

But you get a cool mug with the element that marks the number of years you've been a dues paying member!!!

Speaking of Matthew Sheppard it seems the left is unable to find any legitimate, sympathetic victims. Their victims are all promoted by media lies.

I'm convinced that they actively seek out thugs, druggies and broken people to be their martyrs. If they actually wanted sympathetic victims, they could almost certainly find them.

As to why, hellifiknow. Maybe to piss off the deplorables, or an existential hatred of the martyr idea, or just because they get wood by being contrary.

550 533 I want a flat tax that still has a standard deduction for the cost of living. Even God only wants 10% of the increase not the whole herd.

That's the basis of the Fair Tax. It has always seemed to me to be a much more practical way to implement a flat tax.

551 " the optimum IQ spread for officers and enlisted is about 30 IQ points"

it would seem the enlisted IQ would be relatively constant (90?) ... which would mean the officer would need to be at 120. Seems like a pretty big spread, and few officers would meet that?

If any horny aggressive dogs had tried to rape my female borzoi (cutest dog in the planet) at the dog park, I would have just shot the canine lothario on the spot. That is what the 2nd Amendment is for. It ain't rocket science. ;-)
