NBC's Olympics Were a "Disaster," and They Fear Brand Might Be "Tainted" Forever

NBC thought they were pretty smart when they paid $7.75 billion (with a b) in 2014 for exclusive rights to the Olympics through 2032.

But after the spectacle of the communist-friendly network repulsively toadying up to Putin and now to Xi, people just don't seem to care anymore.

The New York Times called the Olympic Games "a joyless spectacle," while other media adjectives include "the low bar of avoiding total disaster."
According to the Associated Press, through Tuesday, an average of 12.2 million watched the Olympics in primetime on NBC, cable, or its Peacock streaming service, a 42-percent dip from the 2018 Winter Olympics in Seoul, South Korea.
"Only 10 million watched NBC alone, a 47-percent drop from 2018, and through early last week, it was down 57 percent in the critical 25-54 age demographic from the Seoul games," Fox News reported, noting the Super Bowl viewership boost NBC got from airing the Olympics right after the network aired the game.
Slate said NBC's TV ratings didn't take into account metrics from viwers watching on social media or streaming services, but acknowledged how "China's blatant disregard of human rights added a repulsive element to this year's festivities."

Fellow communist-friendly media platform AP was no kinder to NBC.

These Olympics were a disaster for the network: a buzz-free, hermetically-sealed event in an authoritarian country a half-day's time zone away, where the enduring images will be the emotional meltdown of Russian teen-agers after a drug-tainted figure skating competition and a bereft Mikaela Shiffrin, sitting on a ski slope wondering what went wrong.
Many American athletes underperformed, and arguably the most successful -- freestyle skier Eileen Gu -- competed for China.
Viewers stayed away in alarming numbers, and NBC has to wonder whether it was extraordinarily bad luck or if the brand of a once-unifying event for tens of millions of people is permanently tainted.
"Given the investment, they've got to be disappointed right now," said Andrew Billings, director of the sports communications program at the University of Alabama.

Network executives say there are no plans to try and adjust or escape from its rights deal. Several experts say that would be unlikely, given how live sports are increasing in value and represent one of the few ways advertisers can gather large audiences to sell automobiles or beer. NBC Olympics President Gary Zenkel talks optimistically about future games in Paris, Italy and Los Angeles.

It's telling that they're even bringing up the possibility of weaseling out of their Olympics deal.

The taint of this Olympics comes not only from NBC broadcasting Chinese Communist Propaganda -- same shit different day; what sports broadcast doesn't incorporate CCP propaganda nowadays? -- but from the Kamila Valieva doping scandal. The 15-year-old Russian figure skater was caught on in a doping scandal, on three different heart medications that increased endurance. Instead of being eliminated from competition, the regulatory committee rewrote the rules to keep her in the competition, claiming that an underage athlete could not have the rules applied against her.

Then she placed fourth, falling four times, and seemed terrified of having disappointed her coaches and minders, and what punishments awaited her back home.

Does anyone really want to celebrate this kind of thing any more?

Why are we competing with shithole countries? Who cares if we beat these animals or not? I only care if we beat civilized humans.

One woman on Twitter proclaimed the Olympics were "over for me. My lasting impression will be fake snow against a backdrop of 87 nuclear reactors in a country with a despicable human rights record during a pandemic. And kids who can look forward to years of therapy."
The image of Valieva standing alone on the ice, looking terrified before her performance, stuck with NBC's Mike Tirico. "The adults in the room left her alone," he said on the air. "Portrayed by some this week as the villain, by others as the victim. She in fact is the victim of the villains."
While there has long been corruption in the bidding process for the Olympics, the Valieva episode tarnished the actual competition, Billings said.
"That's even more damaging to the product," he said.

122 My daughter is a figure skater and wanted to watch the men compete. One thing that is not mentioned which probably hurt NBC is that you can't get their stuff on a lot of the streaming services because they are trying to run their own streaming company.

SlingTV did not have them so we had to use a digital antenna. I only get a live TV service from start of college football to whenever my basketball team is eliminated in March so I am sure not paying for an additional service for the Olympics.

158 The winter olympics have always been sort of dumb, but Cold War ice hockey was awesome. Watching a few snow sports every four years had its appeal. At least most of those had a clock that you could use to determine the best. Sure there was figure skating for the ladies. Again, it had a certain Cold War charm that led to great Dad jokes about the Eastern Block judging.

Then the Cold War ended, the Russians ended up in the NHL, and they just decided to be the winter X games with medals. The chef's kiss was giving the games to the country that caused the world to shut down for 2 years.

Look, if any place has a good chance at making the winter Olympics succeed, Norway or Salt Lake would be about it. But I think the day has passed the games by. The Utah leaders want it to promote Utah; to show the world all the great snow and tourism etc. And maybe it will work; people would much prefer to ski in Utah than in Beijing.

But most people who aren't GOPe here are just "nope. We don't need yet more immigration and pollution here." Utah may be the "Crossroads of the West" but too many leftists moving here already; we don't need more.

I did watch some of the closing ceremony, and was honestly shocked that Tirico was as critical of the whole thing as he was. Not that he didn't end with some window-dressing about everyone coming together and all, but he openly said, "yeah, this was a disappointment on multiple levels."

Mike Tirico did a great job. The China censors were always in the back of my mind though.

Enjoyed the bobsled events. I love the speed skating short track but didn't see a lot of it broadcasted.

First off it is 5 mins of action followed by 3 mins of commercials followed by a 12 minute video of an American athlete with a sob story. And the focus is so over the top on American athletes, even in events where they have no chance. The American is in 12th place and yet the focus is on him, not the 5 athletes with a chance at a metal.

It's unwatchable.

Between the lack of patriotism overall and the overt commercialism and professionalization of the athletes I just don't care. It was years ago (maybe even 30?) when I remember some speedskater finally winning a gold medal and you could just see the relief in his and his wife's eyes. The silver that he won just wasn't good enough for endorsements after the games.

About the only event in the winter Olympics I have any interest in watching is ice hockey and in addition to China hosting and NBC televising, the American team was slapped together last second. Hard pass.

I will give a shout out to the real winner of this Olympics, Norway. Not only were they smart enough to pull out of hosting and save the insane costs of hosting but they also took home the most medals.

the arthritis is really cleared tho so that's good. I was really feeling great and had gone a little bit with no rashes, but then a few weeks ago they started popping up again

I have a prescription cream (steroid) that clears them quickly but it's just this weird thing I don't know. where you know there's something messed up about your body that wasn't messed up before. they literally radiate OUT from where I was injected? I'll see the swelling start there and then a ring of rashes down my arm a bit. so it's like "what is this!"

I guess part of what I liked about the idea of the Olympics, at least as I understood them when I was young, was that they were originally supposed to be inter-nation competitions as a substitute for war. NBC is largely to blame for that because they have some many "boring background stories" versus showing events for the last 2-3 decades now and I'm still not spun up to stream from a better source. But once the interest is gone, people can tell me "oh this event was fun, or this source shows the events with good commentary etc" and its "yay for you but I'm still not interested in watching"
