Meet The PetMorons

sugar2.jpg

Sort of a long story but in the end you will be smiling. An animal shelter in Independence called Russell at Shep's about a dog brought in. She had been dumped at a local Walmart in a box. It was freezing out. She was in bad shape. Russell said, we'll take her. He immediately called our vet and they agreed to see her right away. She was malnourished, barely able to walk. Tests revealed she was diabetic. The vet asked her named and Russell said he didn't know. How about Sugar (get it?)They started her on an IV and began to feed her. The next day she was taken to a veterinary hospital in Liberty for more testing and treatment. After 3 days she was improving so back to our vet she went. One of our volunteers agreed to foster her and give her the twice daily insulin injections she'd require. Sugar was such a hit that a vet tech agreed to adopt her. A local news station got wind of the story and did a piece on her for the evening news! Sugar is a celebrity! Sugar is now thriving in her new home. The before pictures are heartbreaking but she's doing so much and is a happy pup! Sadly, none of got to meet her but that's okay. A very happy ending for Sugar. - Jewells

It is always good to hear from you Jewells especially when you have Happy Ending stories. Current events and news suck, it's nice to see this kind of story. Thank you.

Mike's "Buddy"

MH:

Don't know if this fits within the criteria for the Pet Thread but of it does:

Best friend for more than 29 years, died this past Sunday. He had been sick for a long time, first with a stroke and the damage it did, then more recently, with colon cancer. As the funeral home was removing his earthly remains, his SIL took this photo. Didn't realize at the time that Mike's dog Buddy was in the photo. Buddy is a hyper active dog particularly when strangers are present. Him lying still with his head on his paws looking up at the stretcher would not be expected behavior. Mike rescued Buddy in the truest sense of the word. He had been tortured as a puppy and had lots of both physical and emotional scars. It took a while, but Buddy turned into an absolutely great dog and was a great comfort to Mike as his health failed. - I post infrequently under the name Agitator.

Our condolences on the passing of your friend. It sounds as if he was a dear human being and the photo is very touching. Good luck to Buddy in his new home.

Criteria? Just about anything pet related will be posted here on the AoS Pet Thread.

Mis Hum -

I hope this picture of Sammy, the best cat ever, brings smiles today. He was the grandcat who stayed with us for a few weeks and ended up capturing our hearts. A friendly fellow who loved to snuggle, he never met a stranger and did not let us dog people deter him from showing his best kitty love to us. He crossed the rainbow bridge in 2017, and we still miss him.

Please keep the Pet Thread going - it's a necessary part of my Saturday routine!

Bless you, Kay

What a photogenic kitteh Sammy was. So sorry to hear he has passed. It's amazing how after 5 years the love of a pet stands out. And thank you for your kind words. It is people like you who keep me going on this endeavor.

Holy moly John, pretty brave of you to submit a photo like this. Such abused doggehs. How do you sleep with yourself at night? Probably with all of these good looking dogs. Thanks for sharing.

3 Had to laugh at the kitteh pic. That's what I do when I get an attack of the lazies; I fall asleep in the recliner then wake up and go to the bedroom and fall asleep on the bed. I only sleep about 3 hours a session. Just like cat naps. Time how long your cat actually sleeps. They seem to be asleep all the time cause they wake up and wander around or pick fights with other pets and then go back to sleep.

7 I have a question for you animal experts.
I was talking to the young woman behind the bar yesterday. She happens to have an identical twin. The question we were tossing around was whether her dog could tell between the two of them.
Can a dog tell between her human and her human's identical twin?

8 Agitator, so sorry about Mike

Posted by: vmom stabby stabby stabby stabamillion at February 26, 2022 03:12 PM (c6ZL1)

9 I would guess the dog will be able to tell as they go more by scent that sight. Sure they recognize people but it's the voice and the scent that dogs key on more.

Since even twins have different metabolism etc. Their scent should be different enough for them to tell the difference.

But I'm not expert and I didn't sleep at a Holiday Inn Express either.

Just my 4 cents (inflation)

25 Halfway through binge watching Norwegian-made Ragnarok on N**Flix.
If you breeze past the enviro-preaching and 'bad industry polluting' trope, it is entertaining. High school kid moves back to Edda with Mom and brother, and finds out, slowly, that he is that big guy with the hammer. Battle between the gods and giants starts to brew.

This is related to the Pet Thread because Magne (the budding Thor) kills the bad guy's wolf, who was a very bad dog.

One funny line was when the main bad guy was told all he likes to do is watch American TV shows and eat candy.

Nice views of the fjords, too.

56 I gave up on crazy once the stank of the new pot permeated state run ABC stores. They are all masked for no reason or state mandate, but the stores reek of pot. If you try to buy booze underage, they have a SWAT team. I am not kidding, they have their own teams with any weapon they desire.

I am so old I remember when the smoking age was 16. The drinking age in DC was 18 but that ended in the mid 80s. I know it was 18 in the military for years after that, but my guess is they changed that. The old argument was if you could die for your country, you could at least have a beer on base

Posted by: Quint at February 26, 2022 03:42 PM (L0OOv)

57 I don't remember if it was suggested here, but I think taurine is helpful in preventing seizures. Old dog usually has one a month so she's due. She seems more alert since she started it. It certainly doesn't hurt.

58 I am now an official cat whisperer. We have had a feral neutered male cat hanging out around the property for years. He was a beautiful yearling but now bears the scars of tough living out of doors so not so pretty anymore. Anyways, we have been trying to domesticate him for a couple of years without great success, too skittish, but I made a real effort over the past two weeks and I have him now. He will let me not only get with two feet, but actually give him extended scritches. He rubs up against my leg now and asks for them. When it was freezing a few days ago I let him sleep, uneasily, in the house but he wouldn't stay all night. He would whine to be let out around 2 or 3 in the morning. But it was a good start.

Mrs928 is amazed what determination and catnip treats with a lavish hand can do.

61 What a great story about Sugar, Jewells. I just do not understand people who would abandon a pet. My understanding is that whatever comes through the door stays til the end, no matter how difficult the end is. My Remy, a half Shetland Sheepdog, half handsome stranger passing through, had a huge cancerous lump on one of her hind legs. It didn't seem to bother her. Every night, I wiped down the lump and the leg it was on because the lump was covered with pee. The XO and I did that for a year or so until the lump caused her incontinence. Sadly, we took her for her last trip to the vet. The last bookstore cat had hyperthyroidism and kidney failure. You don't abandon them any more than you'd abandon a close family member. (But maybe they do abandon close family members. They're heartless enough to do so.)

We received the certificate from the AKC saying that Delilah is now a Platinum-level dog (>2000 points) in the National Owner-Handled Series, the highest offered. She's the first and only Borzoi so rewarded.

The funny thing is that for most of her career she hasn't been owner-handled. Her Majesty has had knee problems and says she can't show Lila to her best potential. But they must be doing something right; Lila has seven Owner-Handled Best in Show wins.

Chekov the Ailing Codger Cat, well, he's enduring but not enjoying life. I wouldn't be if I had to be administered meds every day, and couldn't move without pain and spent my day in bed looking at nothing and sleeping. Would you?

With a leaden heart I called the hospice the vet recommended . . . and was astounded. They want $395 for a home visit, and another $300 for individual cremation. They're not local either. In contrast, the vet office who has been treating Chekov: $156, and the local pet cemetery, $250 for a nice setup like his brother Wolf received. An extra hundred or so, no problem, but at $700 total --?

I've made an appointment for him at the vet for Friday afternoon.

73 Agitator and MH, thanks for posting that note about Buddy. There is something so very fundamentally good about that post!

74 I couldn't help myself but I've been feeding a couple of strays at my mom's retirement home. They are part of a group of about eight cats the home had fixed and feed but these two stay separate nearer the parking lot. They now greet me every morning as I pull up. Amazing how they recognize my Jeep from pretty far away. If I didn't already have my own two kittehs I'd take them home.

82 I can't help but feel a tiny bit of guilt for choosing the cheaper option for Chekov, even though I can afford it easily. But it's kind of the same thing with a human funeral home. They know people are at a weak point, and can exploit that to get them to spring for the more expensive coffin and service, etc.

I know it'll be a stress for him to make that trip in the carrier. But we can lift him into the box without any real pain, and it's a quick run out there.

85 Sorry to hear the news on Chekov the Ailing Codger Cat, Wolfus. Sounds like you have made the right, although very difficult, decision. Choosing life over mere existence is not easy, but sometimes it is the necessary and loving decision to make. Prayers up for you all. Thanks for keeping us posted.

86 So sorry, Wolfus. It's hard to know when to give up on them. When the old dog's back legs give out, I'll have to give up on her. She's gone downhill since last year but can still manage 15 minutes or so in the woods.

Thanks, Jewells. He was never going to be abandoned or mistreated. I've been his breeder's home where she raises her Siberians, and they are raised underfoot and not in cages. So my 12-year friendship with him was a continuation of his early good life, not a rescue of an abused animal. (It'll be 12 years exactly on Monday, as it happens.)

Yeah, he still purrs when we pet of groom him and chirps a little when I speak to him. He's not afraid of us, but just wants to be alone, I guess. The hospice people are nice enough, but my gosh, $700 seems a little ridiculous when his brother Wolf got the $400 treatment. It worked out well and was dignified -- and local.

I know this is the place for it, but I hate to bring the Pet Thread down. Let us toast our furry friends and celebrate life!

Don't feel guilty. What matters is the love.

My step-dad recently passed away, and per his wishes we had him cremated. But we went with the cheapest container option for now because I'm going to build him a nice maple box with inlays based on some of his own designs (he was an artist). We can afford the more expensive options but decided that a box made by someone who loves him means more than just throwing down a check.

There is a seller on Etsy who offers 9" 3D-printed figures of long-haired cats in black or white. I thought of buying one of each, then painting them myself: grayish highlights for Wolf's fur on the black one, black patches on the white for Chekov. Then I'd set their boxes up on the bookcase, each with his own mini-statue. I've done something similar with the late tuxedo cat Oreo. I happened to find a little ceramic cat figurine who was already marked in black and white, and it just took a little careful painting to model her perfectly.

My condolences. I've been following the saga and it hits close to home, with my cat Buddy heading down the kidney failure trail, currently aged 16.5.

One thing my previous vet did, about 17 years back when I had to put my previous cat down due to intestinal lymphoma, was take an inked paw print for posterity. Not nearly as costly as cremation and maybe your current vet can do that for you.
