Daily Tech News 20 February 2022

Top Story

  • I noticed this too. Apart from the usual propaganda outlets like the CBC and the mainstream Canadian press, there's a huge amount of bot activity supporting police brutality against peaceful protestors.

They're not even very good bots. This really needs an investigation because if what I'm seeing is real, it's a massive scandal.

As an added bonus, the avatar for that account was swiped from an online ad for l*ace w*gs.

Speaking of the usual propaganda outlets, who had Won't somebody please think of the Gestapo? on their 2022 Bingo cards?

They've had a hard day brutalising innocent women and children, and just want to go home, have dinner, and kick the dog.

21 I can see Himmler's house from here!

I jest. Himmler's house was destroyed after the war to prevent it from being used as a memorial by national socialist bitter clingers. But he lived practically down the street (the road is now officially the B304) just within the Munich city limits. He apparently raised chickens there before becoming the monstrosity to which he grew.

Nice work, Pixy, keep it up. I always enjoy reading your updates.

The small dry erase board in our kitchen is packed with scribblings -- mostly phone numbers -- that are completely context-free at this point and therefore worthless. Yet still they persist because he who would erase them usually gets subjected to a 24 to 72 hour episode of being the recipient of the stink eye from she who thinks there's hidden, crucial and irreplaceable nuggets buried thereon.

Great idea.

I usually record my "must recall" items on small scraps of paper or on the back of my other printed items that I intended to discard. Every so often, I gather up all those and dump them into a text file on my laptop (named something like, "hey, dummy, this is really important stuff that you should place where they belong.rtf". Half of what I jotted down were usernames and passwords, but without context and so I left myself wondering, "Now, WTF were these attached to, again?"

94 Skip, I liked Dune, though it felt more like episode one on a mini series than a movie.
But I read the first three books and I like to see how film makers interpret it; while not being a fan with my own vision of the right way.
It shares the same flaws as other Dune adaptations - the characters are rather two dimensional. I think the acting was muted, overall. Baron Harkonnen was disappointing.
In this one the desert felt like its own character, which was cool.
I could tell the director was a fan of the books.

"Child poverty"? If that really means incomes for families with children below a hypothetical poverty line, then does the family income measured include all the value of other social programs? I bet it doesn't. This would be what some people call "fake news" or "propaganda".

Sadly it's not just the $600. It's the inflation. I read where a family of four has seen a nearly $300 increase in costs over the last year, and 8 out of 10 families are living paycheck to paycheck now.

That's probably not counting things like braces and broken arm deductibles, either. Just normal stuff like trying to feed a 14 year old boy.

130 "Instant runoff works like this: Instead of choosing one candidate, voters get to rank their candidates in order of preference.
Then, the votes get tallied. If no candidate wins a majority, the weakest candidate gets eliminated. And the votes are counted again - with ballots favoring the eliminated candidate re-counted for their second favorite.

If there's no majority, eliminate the last-place candidate again - and keep recounting until one candidate gets a majority."

In the square before the Kasan Cathedral alone there were 3,000 at least. Suddenly seditious cries were raised, red flags were waved, stones were thrown, and in the midst of it all the gensdarmes began a mad gallop through the crowd. It was a ghastly sight, for they slashed right and left with their swords, even at the bystanders bent only on escaping. Many were wounded, some were killed - how many no two accounts agree-and in the course of the following week hundreds of arrests were made.

The great danger of always predicting bad outcomes is that you internalize the fact that things can never get better. All you see is a negative, and when something positive does happen, you immediately turn to looking at how it isn't positive at all, but somehow makes things worse.

There is a strange belief in elite circles the common people are all cowards at heart and a brutal show of strength is all that is needed to put them in their place.

History shows otherwise. Classic counterinsurgency strategy says not to radicalize the center, and the move to try the J6 approach and arrest everyone they can think of is going backfire bigly.

I thought the tweets that the cops' feelings are being hurt was telling - I bet they are consumed with self-loathing and if you push them harder, they may not balk, but they can quit. People point to Seattle and Portland, but those departments have suffered massive attrition. I think Seattle can only staff 18 percent of its morning shift now.

As an engineer, the world expects everything to work perfectly so we have to be left of bang which requires constantly looking for what could go wrong which expects a mindset of "this is going to break, just how".

It is also observed this simple equation:
Happiness = Expectations ÷ Reality

But I agree, if one predicts doom and it doesn't turn out that way, then it is healthy to be pleasantly surprised and grateful. Maybe Gratefulness could increase in the population if we did expect the worse and it didn't turn out that way.

See? I just rationalized chronic pessimism!

This anticipates the book thread, but Lorenzo Scupoli's book on spiritual combat puts a huge emphasis on the goodness of God, his endless love for us, and the fact that if he permits something to happen, there is a reason for it.

It falls to us, to thank him for that cross, and try to learn how we can be more in accord with his will.

I don't talk bad things because I hate the inevitable deluge of sympathy, but I will say that my youngest child almost died a few months ago. I literally carried her limp body into the ER bellowing for help.

And yet, I gave all my fear to God. I sat there, watching the staff just saying the Hail Mary over and over again, and peace was given to me. She recovered fully.

We are owed nothing in this life. Not a thing. So be grateful for the gifts we have.
