Weekend Hobby & Bodging Thread

rodstewartlayout.jpg

Greetings gang. Yes, that's Rod the Mod and his fantastic HO scale Three Rivers City layout that has been featured many times in the model press over the years. When he's on the road, he rents out a room and actually builds kits, and works on locos and rolling stock for the layout that's based in his Beverly Hills home. I guess tossing TVs out of the window and boffing Miss Pamela doesn't quite cut it anymore!

Hope your weekend is going well. And weekends are made for hobbies, crafting, bodging and all kinds of creative escapes. Let's head to the basement, studio, garage, craft room or hobby area you have carved out and get creative. As always, please use all power tools, supplies and any hazardous chemicals with care. Proper eye, ear and lung protection is also priority one. And if you feel awkward or funny performing an operation on a power tool, STOP. Figure out another way or another tool to get the job done safely. Now, let's see what we've got cooking.

First, Ben Uyeda is a designer who is well known in the YouTube maker community. Here, he utilizes a CNC to create molds for making a modular concrete planter bed.

British ceramicist shows his process for creating a distinctive carved vessel, with tips on how to make unique clay bodies and glazes.

Last time we had the finals for Landscape Artist of the Year and now the winner of the competition, Ophelia Redpath (sp) gets to execute a 10,000 Pound commission for Britain's National Trust. The subject will be a landscape inspired by Snowdonia in Wales. I like her style, which as elements of surrealism with a bit of a nod to American artist Grant Wood.

David from Czech Republic (I think) is an outstanding model builder specializing in armor. Here, he makes the daunting task of 1/35th scale figure painting look simple. Nice step by step tutorial.

For those curious about sewing, this gentleman takes you step by step on making your own pair of pants. He has an accompanying video on drafting your own patterns as well as many other sewing-related videos on his channel.

One of the most rewarding aspects of model railroading is handlaid track and turnouts. It's challenging enough in the larger scales but in N scale (1/160th the size of the real thing) it really demands patience. And this guy is constructing a dual gauge N and Nn3 one!

Sure, R/C model airplanes are cool, but there's something about the nostalgia element of a rubber-powered free flight model that just lifts your spirits. This gentleman is an expert in the field and here he shows his method for constructing an oval fuselage on a jig in balsa. Many other informative videos on this aspect of the model airplane hobby.

Polymer clay artist extraordinaire Ace of Clay takes you step by step in creating a character called Sundrop from "Five Nights at Freddy's."

I've seen molten aluminum poured into fire ant colonies but this gentleman uses it for lost foam casting in sand for decorative objects. Scares the hell out of me but maybe one day I will be brave enough to create some sculpture pieces.

Back to model railroading, and for something completely different in terms of foam, Dave Meek uses extruded pink foam to create amazing desert scenery on his On30 Thunder Mesa layout, which we've featured before. It's his rendition of what the railroads at Disneyland and Knott's Berry Farm might look like if they actually existed somewhere in the desert southwest.

Finally, a master furniture restorer whom I have featured before does an incredible job bringing back what really is something ready for the furnace into its former glory as an art nouveau cabinet.

15 I admit - I don't do a lot of these kinds of things, but watching some of the youtube videos of how creative some of these people get is pretty entertaining. Something I never even thought about was dioramas, there seems to be quite a few channels dedicated to them with huge followings. Some are fantasy based, others WWII or historic subject matter.

This one was pretty whacky - I was impressed with the way he did the water surface using an airbrush - not for painting but controlled air to push the media around.

74 Chickens are easy to raise. The important thing is a predator proof enclosure. We had some in the backyard, living in the kids old playhouse, with a chicken wire enclosure. Buggest problem here was rats, but that problem started with the parrots. I fed commercial layer crumbles. You just don't need anything fancy. If you build a smaller coop, they can stay warm even in cold weather.

75 So I bought an RC aircraft. Getting familiar with controlling it. It is a Mavic. You don't really "fly" it, you tell it where to go and it goes there using GPS.
Very nice camera on a gimbal, 4k res.
I've flown non-GPS RC aircraft before, and I have to admit they are more fun, but I lost or crashed more of them.
This one, you just push a button and it returns "home" (wherever you started).

91 50 My wife is chicken curious... has mentioned a couple times we should get some. Neighbors have a nice coup and (I think) about 6-8 chickens.

Neither of us know a fucking thing about raising chickens. But if the shit hits the fan it might be necessary to learn real fast.
Posted by: Martini Farmer at February 19, 2022 05:40 PM (BFigT)

My middle child talked me into letting her have chickens. The wife was also very much on her side. I finally said yes. After building a coop, squaring off part of the yard with fencing, feeding them from the time they were chicks, I figure my first omelet cost me around $400. They don't lay all the time, so there are months with zero return. They also smell, and their feed attracts vermin (which then ate into my truck's electrical harnesses). The vermin can then attract snakes, or they can try to make your home THEIR home. Didn't have this problem, but it's a certain possibility.

The egg quality was great, but if the SHTF, I can do without eggs. Also, NEVER, EVER let your kids name a chicken. At that point, it is no longer a potential menu item when it's time for it to, uh, "retire".

92 No time for hobbies, right now.

Too much work around the house.

Though, I did order a built in unfinished oak ironing board for Mrs. Blake.

Boiled linseed oil and wipe on poly are what lazy finishers, like myself, dream of. Though, I need to get a metal can for the rags left over from applying boiled linseed oil. Temporarily storing the rags in my gas grill is less than optimal.

In the JO story, though, it turns out to be a hoax -- they are still normal-sized, and the furniture is specially built to super-size -- and Jimmy spots it as cleverly as Ellery Queen could have.

185 Well I have started on the B-26K Counter Invader.

The Hyperscale/Tapatalk forum devoted to the ICM kit is quite frankly stark raving bonkers for seeing specks in other's eyes. There are 16 pages to this thread, 10 comments per page. I made it page 10 and quit.

First some, just using their eyeballs, proclaimed the 8 gun solid nose is too short. So a guy goes out to the Pima museum that has a B-26K and measured the nose in all dimensions three times. Converting it down to 1/48 scale and metric system; the ICM gun nose is 0.4mm short of the real thing. Oh My Gawd! Burn the kit!!!

Took about 7 pages for people to start to accept that maybe ICM got the nose right. But wait! Those wing intakes are messed up they claim. I go look at kit and at photos; *yawn* simply blank off the intakes inside the wings instead of buying resin intakes that you now must cut the model and glue in.

Needless to say I am not too terribly impressed by these folks. About the only after market resin item now available for the B-26K anyone should get is resin wheels because ICM really dropped the ball there.

216 whig, if you're around, I departed for other stuff right after my last comment on KT's thread, so wanted to give short response. Just my assessment, but the thing with Donbass is people, ethnic conflict (about the silliest imaginable), not about resources or territory per se.

I've been joking to people who axe about Donbass lately that it was critical in 1942, big part of that was resources (coal and industry), but today, not so much.

And politically, and unsurprisingly, situations like this attract fairly fanatical interest and support in the Russian populace. It's not an elite, or geopolitical issue, it's a fairly emotional ethnic thing - so the Kremlin (under any management) has both popular license, and pressure, to "do something" if there's a perception of mistreatment, etc.

Crappy weather this weekend, so it's been mostly model trains and ham radio. Also, I pressed my old rotary phone (Western Electric 500D) back into service thanks to a little device called a BTLink. I just had to plug the BT link into a regular 110v outlet, and plug the phone into the RJ-11 jack on the device, and pair the BTLink with my cell phone's Bluetooth. Now, it's connected to my cell phone. When my cell rings, the old rotary does as well, and I can take and make calls on it just like I used to. You can dial out with the rotary dial, and it even generates a dial tone when you pick up the receiver. This thing is great.

Pistols bringing above price range along with old battle rifles. Uneven pricing on replica blackpowder pistols and prices on the low end on classic shotguns and rifles like Springfield Trapdoors. 256 whig I think Donbass is pretty much all about people, in Donbass - no wider strategic significance. I haven't the foggiest - as David Niven said when questioned at an American Battle of the Bulge checkpoint about the winner of the 1940 World Series - about the merits of the nastiness in Donbass. A safe bet in central/eastern Europe usually is "both sides" are the problem.

I am not sure whether Donbass was one of the areas "russified" by Stalin for strategic reasons, like Latvia or northern Kazakhstan, or whether the Russian populace is there naturally, which could easily be true.

Russia's concern, and I think dilemma, is Ukraine's military capacity and western integration down the road. If one considers their "red lines", it seems awfully difficult to avoid the inexorable movement towards crossing them (except for the missile one, which NATO has no interest in doing and Ukraine would be dumb to explore).

263 50 My wife is chicken curious... has mentioned a couple times we should get some. Neighbors have a nice coup and (I think) about 6-8 chickens.
Posted by: Martini Farmer
-------------------
For the most part, you have to decide whether you want the chickens primarily for meat or for eggs--both, whether you want a rooster (to make more chickens but otherwise can be an annoyance), and whether pretty chickens or pretty shells make a difference. There is no nutritional difference in pretty shells regardless what folklore exists--brown shells are thicker generally but at the cost of less production per unit of feed.

You will need to learn to candle eggs (expose to a strong light to determine cracks in the eggs, blood or meat spots, or a egg that has bacterial development (aka rotten egg), wash them, and so on.

Some people like grain fed eggs which means keeping them in a smaller area and usually safer from aerial and other predators if done right. Others let them graze for bugs etc. in a yard area but can lose them to predators that way.

268 256 whig I think Donbass is pretty much all about people, in Donbass - no wider strategic significance.

Russia might not like in the long term the consequences of reabsorbing the near abroad. Salami tactics can be used by others such as around the Amur River with such a precedent.

Fresh eggs can be with proper sanitation. There is always a risk from salmonella and other less pleasant infections so proper hygiene of the chicken yard is important. So is eating any cracked eggs immediately and cooking them sufficient to kill off salmonella.

There are some variants that are very unpleasant to deal with of that and generally that comes from sloppy keeping of the birds and improper handling of egg collection.

I think the Amur stuff has been quiet since the last dust-up 50+ years ago.

Your earlier comment got me to thinking, I can only think of three fairly small areas that were USSR, but not Russian Empire. Baltics, Bessarabia, and (thanks to WWII), part of the Kuriles below Sakhalin. I don't see any evidence Moscow wants to reassemble the USSR, but obviously they do seek (and have achieved in many cases) economic advantage and their precious security cordon in the ex-Soviet space and beyond.

wow, sounds like you know chickens, certainly more about them than I know. I have never candled or watched for meat spots ... sometimes I leave them out but usually put them in the fridge. From what I hear they have a coating from the chicken that protects them, so I don't even wash them (which would remove that.)

But I do try to cook them well ... I probably don't clean their house often enough. Mine go out around the garden and yard, lost a couple to what I think was an eagle (previously lost 7 of 8 to coyotes when the chickens used to roam way out in the fields, lost them in high corn)

But overall, chickens seem like the easiest most productive "livestock" ... eggs alone are great for "survival assurance".

I need to figure out where I can center it close enough to the house to minimize the feedline, get it lifted up into the trees (and I must keep it discrete...I'm in an HOA, although a very lax one).

Then I need to measure the route of the line from my shack, up to and then all the way across the attic, and from there to where it needs to meet the antenna.

Then I need to purchase that feed length of cable, plus 22' so I can make that length of cable into an "ugly balun" (really an air choke).

And then I'll be on the air in the Big Boy Bands, lol. Right now I have a very compromised indoor (attic) antenna of the same design, but in 20, 15, 10 and 6 (it was my proof of concept fan dipole).

338 But I do try to cook them well ...

Eggs do have a protective coating but a crack in the shell overcomes it. If you do decide to wash them, you can replace the coating with food grade mineral oil and it seals the pores.

Never though, put eggs in the fridge adjacent to foods with strong odors such as cantaloupes, onions, etc. unless you like your eggs preseasoned. Can especially add off tastes to them if you bake with them. Cataloupe flavored bread might just not be a hit.

339 >>>My wife grew up with chickens, had one as a pet.

>It's a shame when you get close to them and then have to chop their heads off to make dinner. I suggest not getting too friendly with any but maybe a few.

340 Black people in King County are so fortunate to have white liberals there to look out for them! Whatever would they do without white liberals?
