Orangutan Cafe

harborseals.jpg
Harbor seals (common seals)

Five stray (lost or abandoned, no one knows) golden retriever puppies were found walking in a park in Stark County, Ohio.

They weren't locked up in the shelter for long -- people slept in their cars to wait in line for the shelter to open, to adopt them.

Yesterday I posted about a dog and a pig who were very concerned with traffic flow. I forgot to link this bear.

Very nice story: A man fell out of his boat in the middle of the ocean. He tried swimming towards the boat, but the boat's engines were on -- and the boat outpaced him and disappeared.

He was miles and miles away from land and it was cold. (This was last month.)

He thought he was lost:

"That's when I realized, like, okay, we got problems," Thompson said. "And I just started swimming as hard as I could, towards the boat, and it really didn't take too long to realize like, it's getting farther, I'm not getting closer."

Despite being an expert diver and experienced swimmer, Thompson felt the icy chill of the ocean and certain death creeping in.

"The panic set in it was like, wow, this is a pretty heavy situation," he said.

Thomspon needed a miracle to survive against overwhelming odds. With no land in sight, he leaned on the love for his family to inspire the fight to live.

"Just keep swimming, you gotta get home to your family." Thompson kept telling himself. "I was devastating myself, through my mind, just picturing my girls and my son growing up without me, and my wife, you know, not having a husband to support her...I wasn't thinking about sharks or anything like that, until I hear this splash?"

To Thompson, that splash felt like an angel summoned to help him.

"It was a medium sized harbor seal," Thompson said. "The seal would go under water and he came up and nudged me. like a dog comes up and nudges your leg."

Thompson saw that as a divine sign that against all odds he could make it.

"Did it know, like hey, this human is in trouble, hey keep going dude?" he said.

After his interaction with the seal, Thompson felt determined to swim to the nearest oil platform, which was far but closer than land.

"You gotta make it to the platform because you have no choice," Thompson said.
Freezing and exhausted, he kept swimming some five hours -- finally reaching the platform.

"It started getting brighter and I'm just like, I'm crying. And I'm like, shouting at the sky." he said.

After his rescue, he recovered his boat, then went out looking for his savior seal. He found him, then killed him and ate him.

No that's a joke.

This badly abused pit bull -- which had been used as a "bait dog" in a dog fighting ring, and I don't know what that is, but I'm sure it's horrible -- was found abandoned under a dumpster. But some nice people decide they're going to give him a nice life to make up for the crap one he's had up until now.

Shelter dogs getting adopted.

Purr-kour. No, a different one. Hopefully this link doesn't get deleted.

Cute little meeting.

Cat Olympics. I think this clip will get better ratings than NBC. Awww, poor them.

Another Miracle Mammal. I can't figure this one out. Ice, I'd guess, but I can't see it.

Littermates.

What do you do when one kid knows the right answer, but his brother is dumb as a stump?

Cat demands attention.

Hedgehog family out for Sunday stroll.

Squeaky otter gets the chin-rubs.

Inman: Friday Top Five compilation.

Li'l Chaz wasn't ready to take the wheel.

Another compilation, this one mostly punch-outs.

Karen's night out. Someone really should have knocked her out. Enough of this bullshit. You want to throw hands, get ready to catch hands, Karen.

Her outfit isn't enough to distract from this ignominy.

The title of the Cafe is just Orangutan Cafe. Simple. Because... well:

Stick to the end, when he picks him up to bring him up to the bed.

9 The story on top about the wait list to adopt the pups hits close to home.
We've been trying for months to get a pup, or a kitten, or both.
Nope. Nothing to be had at the SPCA or Animal care and control.

33 Speaking of strange causes of death, I once went and watched a lecture by Dr. Bill Bass at the University of Tennessee, a renowned forensic scientist that developed many, many protocols used in forensic science today.

His lectures were fantastic and he is a fascinating guy. This particular lecture was on strange deaths and he discussed a great many cases in which he unraveled the clues to determine how people died.

The one that I remember most vividly involved a man found dead in the hood system of a local McDonald's with his entire body cavity deteriorated and organs dissolved.

Investigation uncovered that the man was an employee who tried to sneak back into the restaurant after closing time through the hood vent system to steal the nightly take. That man lost his grip on the greasy duct work and slid down, impaling himself in his anus upon the Ansul fire-suppression system, causing it to release its contents up into his bowels.

The fire suppression chemicals were so caustic that they ate away his interior organs, and the man's dead body was found 3 days after the incident when employees began to smell a foul odor on the kitchen from the decaying body.

Fun!

89 I have smashed my head a half dozen times like poor ducktape trash bag girl. I feel for her.

I am not a coordinated man. Whatever you call the sixth sense, the internet says "Proprioception", which allows a person to feel the position of their body in the environment around them, well mine sucks a lot. I have done that twice getting into something and heard my spinal column pop from compressing on impact. Maybe I have a massive head, I don't know.

But I have done that exact move before. One time I jumped off a ledge not seeing that a ceiling above me also stepped down and I put my head right through it until it came into contact with a rafter. At one job I had to move quickly under these conveyor belts at a nighttime sorting operation for a shipper. I would smash my head directly into half-inch steel plates doing that.

I'm so glad phone cameras and the internet didn't exist back then. People would have followed me around filming probably. My poor damned head.

90 Now cops are hypothesizing that maybe this 60+ year old man was... standing on his bed and fell backwards and cracked his head on the headboard?

Was he jumping up and down on it?

-
When I was a kid, I had this thing where I'd lie on my back on my bed and then spring up to standing by propelling myself with my arms and legs. One day, I misjudged my position on the bed and sprung up cracking my forehead on the underside of the window sill. Hurt like a mother!

Sadly, this has gone in a wave that has been repeated across the country. Everyone gets pets because they're all at home, then things change in the area job situation and house arrest status, people start going back to work and the shelters get a ton of pets dumped on them. 177 I'm actually listening to the Ian Gillan Band's "Clear Air Turbulence" LP, I just like that Blondie song.

The Ian Gillan Band released three albums in a 15-month period between 1976-77 that even Gillan's most ardent fans fans would rather forget ever happened. The group pursued a jazz-rock fusion style and it led to three tremendously *weird* albums that seem to be universally reviled, yet I dig 'em. I like weird.

Never doubt the unending power of a gubmint regulation. As I get older and headlights get much brighter, I find it harder to drive at night.

It turns out, there is a tech solution for that -- headlights that can adapt to shine more on the roadway and less into oncoming drivers' eyes. One of the Jap car companies applied to some fed agency back in 2013 to allow use of these adaptive headlights.

NINE FUCKING YEARS later, the alphabet agency is about to approve a rule change allowing the tech. We won WWI and WWII in less than 9 years.

255 Was wondering about "Orangutan Cafe". Never seen orangutans like those two up top.

From memory, think orangutan translates from bahasa malaysia as "jungle man". Was very lucky many years ago to spend a few days at a research center right on the edge of virgin rainforest in Borneo, as a tourist.

Woman we had dinner with one day (we just ate at the mess hall with all the scientists, was very nice) was a Thai scientist studying orangutan behavior. She had one individual she was studying. She staked out one particular durian tree where the critter liked to feed. I think she'd seen the thing 3 or 4 times. The patience of such research work is a different world.

312 Tastes are individual, Ann Wilson, but I can't think of a red wine I'd pair with steak, per se.

Warai's suggestion of an oaked (buttery) chardonnay has merit, made me think of steak with some sort of cheese - usually it would be gorgonzola or some sharp cheese to top a steak, but there are also cheese sauces that would be nice on beef and also go well with the chard.

331 Gewurztraminer can go with a surprising range of dishes, especially if it's actually spicy ("gewurz" = "spicy" auf deutsch), but not always easy to find such. Most bottlings tend to soft and sweeter profile.

Pairing for the side dish was a great suggestion, above.

Again, depending on the cut and preparation, there are beef/cheese combos that could work with whites.

347 Dang, the dain bramaged memory does it again, but there are some sparkling reds, though you rarely encounter them.

I came across one from a CA years ago, when I'd visit Sonoma once or twice a year while living in the east. Cannot remember who made it, or the grape. It wasn't a dark pink champagne, it was red. Was fantastic with steak.

Hope that was helpful!

For a while my favorite simple meal has been a nice grilled steak with some grilled anaheim and shishito peppers (latter sauced with soy/sesame oil after) and a good red. A really good cab franc, which is nearly impossible to find, one that has the distinct capsicum flavor note. Very little cooking, much enjoying.

There was one winery near Charlottesville that was experimenting with some Georgian white varietals years back. The spike proteins can cause significant inflammation wherever they spread in your body.

Looking on the positive side I'd guess arm tissue is one of the better places for this to happen. Perhaps suggest an anti-inflammatory? The FNM says...Tylenol for what's is worth.

With a needle, you go straight in, and straight out, at a 45 degree angle, press syringe slowly and steadily.

Don't wiggle around. That's how bruising occurs, I believe.

439 This will be interesting... the last decade or so has been a bit of a project in getting a significant portion of the world's population trained to a point where they can watch a video of something happening before their very eyes and come away with a completely different internal narrative about what happened in the video than what it shows.

Now we have uniformed mounted policemen unambiguously riding down their own citizens in the streets. No way to spin it. No way to deny it. Now let's see how ridiculous the brainwashed responses are.

I've had this idea for a while now that a lot of the things we equate with intelligence, the ability to carry out complex tasks, repeating actions precisely or being able to cite elaborate things from memory are actually low level brain functions that have been fairly common among hominids.

That other things have supplanted this in humans like the ability to form relationships with anyone and everything, sympathize with others, adapt and create meaningful connections with others using creations of communicative language. I wouldn't be surprised if we could train gorillas to be super talented surgeons, or engineers. Because I don't think those endeavors, by them self, set us apart from animals or point to the uniqueness of man.

The rum has been flowing freely here this evening, so I may come across as an ass...

Pfizer, et. al., is killing people or injuring them. Check VAERS numbers then multiply by 100. (Johns Hopkins said VAERS reporting is probably only 1~10%).

First jabbed may be alright if they got it early enough. Second and subsequent jabbed will probably be no longer among the living in 3 - 5 years.

Speculation that I heard today said that 54.9 (or 59.4)% of the world's population may have VAIDS.

I may be painting a gloomy picture.

Looks like the short term complications kill about 1/1000 or 2000.

We are starting to see the mid term complications with the reduced immune response from those who've gotten the shots, depending on whether that is short term (and for God's sake stop getting boosters!) or not, it might end up dwarfing the death toll from the short term complications.

508 Some speculation that the worst vaccine reactions are caused by injections into the bloodstream instead of the muscle. Sposta pull back on the plunger before injecting.

I believe the CDC considered and specifically rejected that recommendation.

There are other shots that are only supposed to go into the muscle and not the blood stream - but it would appear the issue here is that the clot shot gets in easier and causes more damage when it does...

I used to donate blood a lot. O neg and all. You get a lot of med school youngins volunteering for that to get experience. So I'm in my early 20s and there's this nurse that looks my age. I'm never squeamish about anything done to me so I'm watching her put the the first needle in that they then do some retraction thing and hook the tube to the bag. Well she didn't hit the mark the first try. So what do you think she did? If you say start jerking and wrenching it around inside my arm you win. My brain started communicating to the rest of my body how painful that was at the same time an older nurse came over looking shocked, shoved young nurse over and pulled the needle out. Didn't bleed at all but I got a massive bruise on that arm.

556 It's called back puncture or thru and thru puncture; it's when you try and thread a needle into the vein but go all the way through. There is probably a fancy Latin term for this fuckup. It causes internal bleeding from the punctured vein. It appears as a bruise.

Now, arteries have a much higher internal pressure, so imagine the kind of 'bruise' a failed arterial tap invokes. I've had one of these. Hurt worse than the procedure.
