RIP P.J. O'Rourke

He got more liberal and establishment in later years but he was an amusingly contrarian rogue before that.

He was 74.

I think he took over as editor of National Lampoon when Doug Kenney died.

He was the co-editor of the famous High School Yearbook Parody.

Do I think leftwing insurers worked with the leftwing bankruptcy accountants and made this happen? Yes. For that reason, it is bad b/c if Remington was a going concern, it would never have agreed to this b/c it would win in court. But it doesn't exist. It is impossible to reconcile his Republican Party Reptile line in the 80s with being Never Trump.

Guarantee they will find out who the shareholders of Remington the firearms company were and go after each and every one of them to try to establish liability for those people. And of course all the company officers over the last 20 years.

See, when you create an insane precedent like this, it absolutely certain that unscrupulous attorneys who have the support of a corrupt judicial system will start throwing the most insane ideas possible at the wall to see what sticks. The way they did with this lawsuit, and it worked.

So if Remington is out of business, bankrupt and dismantled, and the insurance company agreed to and pays out this settlement, that means that it doesn't matter if Remington is all those things I just typed, since now the insurance company will now be defending suits by for every single person killed with a Remington firearm while Remington was insured.

232 Mikey NTH, after studying the restored B-26K "Special Kay" and period photos of the cockpit, oi the ICM pit really needs an Eduard redo.

The master armament panel is an indistinct shape atop the instrument panel. Decal sheet does not have the very obvious emergency engine shut-offs that are just under the master armament panel. Decal sheet and plastic instrument panel is missing at least two round instruments on the pilot's side.

ICM merely made a second A-26 control wheel when the K has two distinct control wheels. No glass for the pilot's gunsight. The circuit breaker panel located at the pilot's knee is represented by a series of lines instead of distinct rows of buttons. Center console is missing all the levers for things like throttles and flaps plus the three very visible red variable switches.

The light gray quilted padding that covers the co-pilot's side and works its way behind both seats to end at the pilot's shoulder is missing. This even extends to the canopy frames behind the pilots.

I loved just about everything he ever wrote. I was fortunate enough to meet him once. It was at one of his book signings. I was a young attorney working in downtown Manhattan. There was a Waldenbooks or some other chain in the building and he was there signing copies of "Driving Like Crazy" I believe. I came down well after lunch and the event, not exactly well attended (as "conservative writers" were not "in demand in NYC at the time, or now, for that matter), was almost done. I was last on line and when I got up to the table he asked my name and signed and I asked him how he was doing. He looked at me and said " pretty" good, what's your story?" We started to chat for a minute and then I offered that I should leave so he could get on with his book signing and he looked around and said" what the hell, no one's here, you want some coffee?" He had one of the store folks bring over some coffee and we had an honest to God discussion for about 30 minutes. Truly a nice human being. RIP PJ. You are missed

261 An animation of Baldwin shooting Halyna Hutchins, which was commissioned by Hutchins' family, shows Halyna well to the side of the camera.

One of the arguments for treating this like an accident was that Baldwin was asked to point the weapon at the camera, and Halyna was behind the camera.

If the animation is accurate, Baldwin aimed at least 30 degrees to the left of the camera to hit Halyna.

Yes, I know, all guns are loaded and all that. I'm addressing the specific claim that Baldwin was only doing what he was told for a specific camera shot, with the gun pointed at the camera.

it was confusing, tbh, the epoch times piece said:

For unvaccinated travellers, the minister said they will continue to be tested upon arrival and must quarantine for 14 days. They will also need to conduct a test on day eight of their quarantine.

Canada will also adjust its travel health notice from level 3 to level 2, which means the federal government will no longer recommend Canadians avoid all travel for non-essential purposes.

Likewise, international flights arriving in Canada will be permitted to land at all remaining Canadian airports by the end of the month, said the Public Health Agency of Canada in a press release on Feb. 15.

They did a thorough ultrasound of my heart and the surrounding plumbing. It took a long time. They looked at flow in the major plumbing, including the arteries in the neck and all that. Everything looked fine and dandy.

It was very cool to see real-time cross section images of your beating heart. Seeing the valves opening and closing. And the flow direction. There's blood coming in, filling the chamber. Boom, there it goes out.

And all that was well within operating tolerances. My ticker was ticking textbook.

341 I would guess military aircraft-especially landing on a deck is much harder to do.

Posted by: FenelonSpoke

Unfortunately, Kara Hultgreen, who died in her F-14 trying to land on a carrier, made a rookie mistake that has killed many F-14 jocks, men included: She poured full power in to go around again and swung the stick sharply to port, which flamed out her port engine instantly and the plane then turned over to port. When the RIO hit the ejection handles, he shot sideways and survived, by the time Hultgreen ejected 0.4 seconds later, the aircraft's roll to port caused her to be ejected straight into the water because she was so low, killing her.

She was warned in training about this, and was an experienced pilot in another aircraft type, but this kind of mistake was very common in the earlier model of the F-14, with its substandard engines prone to flameouts of this type.

342 318 bonhomme wife and I were discussing the Baldwin case as I was filling her in. Of course still a possibility all that story is smoke and trying to show a accident or freak chance of nature and not Alec pointing and purposely pulling the trigger.

It amazes me that Baldwin hasn't been charged with a crime yet. If it were you or I, we'd be rotting in jail right now.

344 I kinda remember him stumping for Hilary, so yeah, that's awful but, not diddle your kids awful. Not steal from America awful. Chill bro.

That's the thing, Half. And this is where it gets both complicated and shitty.

O'Rourke advocated for things late in the game that - although they didn't directly lead to diddle my kids awful - absolutely set the stage for those that think diddle my kids is simply a valid lifestyle choice that deserves polite debate in the public arena.

O'Rourke was a typical Exceptional Boomer. He hated authority - until he tasted authority. It's a behavior that generation demonstrates time and time and time again.

345 PJ O'Rourke was interesting. He had some quote along the lines conservatives had the Left on the ropes, but decided to get really bogged down in the abortion debate.

I have mixed feelings on that.

I liked his articles, was disappointed he was easily suckered into a sort of NeverTrump position.

346 Our side is really into decorum and norms. And has this weird blind spot that somehow if "our" guy doesn't live up to those standards, the appropriate punishment is a corrupt/evil Democrat being elected.

I saw this with a pocket of Evangelicals and Mormons. Trump was not the spiritual leader they were looking for, so the only option was Hillary or Biden that was opposed to anything remotely socially conservative. They couldn't get over Trump saying pussy.

347 Disagree on Lincoln. But that's ok my friend.

Too Sweet.

From everything I've read on the man - which is a lot - he was pretty exceptional in his day to day communication. He could connect with a common man. He pissed off the elites. Which is all good.

But he saw levers of power, and how to pull them. Never a notion of about if those levers should be left alone. In that way - yes, the man was a natural born tyrant. A tyrant with shades of benevolence. But a tyrant all the same.

362 Was surprised to see O'Rourke go Never Trump (especially considering the alternative), but when he was good he was GOOD, and he bought his way into heaven with PARLIAMENT OF WHORES. An earlier commenter said that one should be required reading in any government class, and he was right. But considering what you can avoid in school these days and still graduate, it should probably be required in government, history, social studies, and what the hell, phys ed too. PoW is worth the price of admission just for the chapter where PJ balances the federal budget.
