Producer Price Inflation Rose 9.7% Year-to-Year
The PPI is the inflation level as experienced by producers, as opposed to the CPI, which measures inflation in prices for end-user consumers.
The PPI has been higher than the CPI, which -- and I'm no economist, I'm just spitballing -- seems to me to indicate that the CPI will be rising still further in the near future. That is, the PPI should be a leading indicator for the CPI. Oh by the way, prices jumped an entire 1% in a single month. Let's Go Brandon.In polling news, Civiqs just published state-by-state polling for Brandon's job approval, and the results are not pretty for the Democrats. First of all, nationally, Brandon' approval is at the sick level of only 34%, with 56% disapproving. Brandon is disapproved of by voters in all but five states. In one state, it's a tie; only in four states does his approval exceed his disapproval.
Wholesale inflation in the United States surged again last month, rising 9.7% from a year earlier in a sign that price pressures remain high at all levels of the economy. The Labor Department said Tuesday that its producer price index -- which measures inflation before it reaches consumers -- jumped 1% from December. Excluding volatile food and energy prices, wholesale inflation rose 0.8% from December and 8.3% from January 2021. Last week, the government reported that inflation at the consumer level soared over the past year at its highest rate in four decades, squeezing households, wiping out pay raises and reinforcing the Federal Reserve's decision to begin raising borrowing rates. The 7.5% price surge ranged across the economy, from food and furniture to apartment rents, airline fares and electricity.
President Joe Biden's job approval numbers have continuously spiraled downward, showing the president underwater in 45 states, according to the CIVIQS rolling job approval average. Forty-five states have the president with a higher job disapproval rate than approval, according to the CIVIQS rolling job approval poll, covering the president's job approval on a rolling basis since his inauguration. This is compared to only five states that show a higher approval rating for Biden. Evidentially, California -- a typically solid blue state -- shows Biden's approval close to flipping, with only a two-point margin. Forty-five percent of the respondents from the state said they approve of Biden, while 43 percent disapprove.
More than half of Democrats want their party to nominate someone other than President Joe Biden in 2024, according to a CNN poll released on Sunday. The survey, which was conducted by SSRS in January and February with 1,527 adults, found that only 45 percent of Democrats and Democrat-leaning voters want Biden to run for reelection. More than half -- 51 percent -- want someone else in the Oval Office. The margin of sampling error is ± 3.3 percentage points.

Yup. CPI is downstream from PPI, usually by 1-2 quarters. So with PPI running at 10%, CPI will be running hot for at least the next 3-6 months. Last year about this time we saw PPI starting to spike and I said something like "hold on to your butts, because consumer prices are downstream and inflation's going to hit later this year." Likewise, we should see the turnaround in PPI before we see it in CPI. But this is not that turnaround.

We were going to do a cat fish fry for Saint Patrick's day at our VFW to replenish the Veterans relief fund. Frozen catfish prices went from $45 a case last year to $95 a case this year. We have to decide on an alternative at the meeting this week. It will probably be pulled pork and smoked sausage.

Not enough. They need to raise rates, yes, but they need to destroy a fair chunk of the money supply. QE needs to end, now. No "taper" and no phase-in, just turn off the spigot. No new asset purchases. They also need to end any and all rollovers. When an asset matures, they do not purchase a new one and just destroy the money. This might - maybe - be enough, but they might also need to just start selling outright. But raising rates by a quarter point is not going to deal with the problem. They need to shrink the money supply, and that means stopping the liquidity games right now.
And that might - maybe - enable them to leave rates low enough to keep the federal government cashflow-positive. Goodbye record stock and bond prices, though, if that happens.

I read that, but it's not reflected in the chart. In the chart, CA is at 41% approve 49% disapprove, which means Biden is underwater in CA. I suspect the article refers to a different poll result than the charts, but I'm not sure.

Dig down into the intermediate stage levels in the latest PPI. Some of those are pushing 20% YoY. This is bad. Cost-push inflationary Tsunami.
Again, it takes a while for this wave to ripple to the retail end, and the CPI. But come it will.

The Fed needs to do an emergency stop right now. Can they pull out without destroying the ship/airplane. Think of airplane screaming at a mountain. The longer you wait to pull out, the harder that becomes. At some point, you can't do it with passing out or even destroying the plane by the g-forces required.
The Fed is there now. Pulling out now means immediate rake hikes and liquidity drains like you've never seen. We're not talking "nasty recession" as the result, we're talking depression. Oh, and the stock market would take a 25% hit. At least.

"Finlandized" in this case is complicated, situation quite different, in various ways including geography, history, etc. Moscow desires a Ukraine that is neither militarily capable enough to not be pushed around (i.e., possibly menace the Russian grab of Crimea some day), nor integrated with NATO (membership, or not).
This means a Ukrainian govt. explicitly agreeing to limits on what for other countries would be normal sovereign actions or policies. Hard to get that. In addition, current regime could not bind future regimes.
Coercion could include incursions, or attacks to degrade Uke military assets and establish dominance. Even that may well not deliver the above goals. Thus my thought that Moscow is in a bad spot, both now, and medium-term - in terms of achieving their druthers.

You've got "core", which is less food and energy. They publish both. The problem is they've adjusted the way they calculate the CPI (weights and "hedonics" and other hinky nonsense). They've made two major changes, around 1980, and 1992 or so. Pre-1980 calculations would show inflation well into the double digits.

If the Fed pulls liquidity supports and starts actively shrinking the money supply, we're in recession territory and possibly depression territory. First, the stock market will crash, and 25% is damned optimistic. I'd guess closer to 50% over the course of the first year or 18 months. The bigger problem is the bond market, where prices will fall pretty dramatically. And the knock-on effects from *that* will be the real problem, because large numbers of companies (mainly large enterprises) are shambling zombies with tremendous debt loads. If they can't roll that paper over at preposterously low interest, a lot of big businesses are going to fail, which will also drive unemployment and crashing tax receipts.
There's no way to engineer a soft landing, but a hard landing would be better than the failure of the monetary system or the government.

I am not so sure about that. The number of Swamp denizens who have lit out to WV in recent years has amazed me. Sure the allure is different. A lot of people were already doing okay and North of 29. But people are moving to WV anecdotally, and not just a few. I would be interested in the numbers over the. Years. My guess is WV won't attract big numbers, but those that go will be sure the state. Here's a much better forecast. The fed, which has no credibility at all but thinks they do, will make a single token rate hike of 0.25%. That will rattle the markets hard enough they can say we have to stop now (and probably reverse it. Negative interest rates here we come).
Now, the dems are going to get mushroom tattooed and curb stomped up and down November. Immediately after that, the fed will start hiking, hard, the economy will finally collapse down to match the real state of affairs, and the establishment will blame those freedom lovin trump voters

One of the reasons why Modern Monetary Theory got any traction was that the argument was: "Why shouldn't the Federal government borrow trillions and Do Good Things with the money with interest rates so low?"
That was the entire rationale for Build Back Better.

Yeah, my P&M lived there before I was born, so lots of family friends and acquaintances. I was doing a fair amount of work there for several years, I'd normally spend 3 or more weeks between Maui and the big island. A lot of the "new natives" are weapons grade useless, and they demand free while spitting at you for giving it to them. They have enough homeless on their own, it's a good thing for them plane tickets are so damned expensive. Although if I was a homeless fuck that would be the perfect place. You can feed yourself for free (if you're motivated to pick fruit or fish that is) and it's rarely cold enough to need a long sleeve shirt.
After a couple of weeks I'm pacing the island like a tiger in a tiny cage.

States are big places. You can't really generalize weather for an entire state.
As far as taxes go, I've lived in several states. I came to the conclusion they all fuck you. The only difference is how they do it. Some have high income tax, some high sales tax, some high property tax. But at the end of the day they get you one way or another. Even supposed "low tax" states will get you with hidden things like car registration fees, permits to build, highway tolls, etc.

There was a raised walkway made of wood that went for miles over a marshy area. It was a big employment project.
The workers for it had a contract for an 8 hour work day, but that included a 2 hour commute time on either end plus a one hour lunch break in the middle, so the average work day was 3 hours.

The weather is pretty much four seasons so that's nice. We've had some brutal winter and some very mild. Taxes depends on what county you are in more than anything. IDK about Branson. Where I live, Jackson County is very high taxes. I wouldn't move to Branson proper. Fucking nighmare in the summer. Tourists everywhere.

JP Morgan, Mellon, Carnegie, Rockefeller, all the old Gilded Age guys did it. Gave away a huge proportion of their money. Carnegie gave it all away as I recall, building libraries, hospitals, orphanages, schools, etc.

They're going up everywhere at insane rates. I have a friend from HS who has lived in NV for many years, and known a few others. While NV was attractive back in the 80's and even 90's, it's not nearly as compelling these days. There's still some gorgeous areas, but I can see NV going the way of CA as a a lot of the bay Area is moving to places like Carson City.

People just throw around low or high tax states. But types of tax matters. Like TX has no income tax but ridiculous high property tax. If you make $1M a year and rent an apartment that works out well. But if you make $80K a year and own a home, that kinda sucks for you.

What can't be fixed is Medicare/health care spending by the US govt. Two, three decades ago it was clear that health care was going to bankrupt the US govt if something wasn't done. Everyone knew this. But they did nothing because fixing it then would've meant getting thrown out of office.

People just throw around low or high tax states. But types of tax matters. Like TX has no income tax but ridiculous high property tax. If you make $1M a year and rent an apartment that works out well. But if you make $80K a year and own a home, that kinda sucks for you.

Social security itself could be reasonably fixed, even now. There would be pain, but it could be fixed.
What can't be fixed is Medicare/health care spending by the US govt. Two, three decades ago it was clear that health care was going to bankrupt the US govt if something wasn't done. Everyone knew this. But they did nothing because fixing it then would've meant getting thrown out of office.

I have been researching Uruguay. Fairly stable colonial republic government, energy mostly from hydro so no major shocks when the global oil economy crashes. Spanish speaking, many English speakers because of the thousand plus tech businesses there that provide offshore programing services. Highest per capita income in South America, not land locked, few Progressives...
Downside is that Montevideo is basically the only city. The climate is less than desirable. Flights to anywhere are horribly expensive and long because the requirement to perform many layovers. Time zone is one hour earlier than EST so PST clients will be waking up sometime in the afternoon.

When we left Kentucky our 1,500 sf house on 1/4 acre generated $800 a year in property taxes. Here in Texas our 2,100 sf house on 3/4 acre yields $6,000 in property taxes. Granted Kentucky has an income tax but that came no where near close to closing the tax gap between the two States. It is expensive to live in Texas.

Property values in somewhat desirable areas are highly inflated. A house down the street from where I am leaving was $400k a couple years ago and is on the market for $800k. A 1300sqft home is renting for $2200/mo.
Where I am heading, is less desirable because the town is more industrial and far from the major economic centers. For the home you plan to die in, you don't want any appreciation because the school taxes will rape you. If the house is just a waypoint, then you want massive acceleration in growth.

A $250k house in east Texas is a much better home than a $250k hovel in the Austin, D/FW or Houston area.
When I moved to ATX, a house that was just barely outside my reach was $330k in 2001. It now runs $1.3M and the property taxes are roughly $25k/yr About ten years ago, the taxes would have exceeded the mortgage.
i have a friend whose duplex, about five years ago was valued at $500k in ATX, the tax was around $10k/yr But he has a 6000+sqft palace in downtown Guanajuato, MX and the annual property tax is two hundred and fifty dollars per year, and an additional savings if paid in cash.
