The Morning Rant - Rite Aid & Rapaport: Woke Corporations Siding With Criminals Over Communities

About two weeks ago, J.J. Sefton wrote about Michael Rapaport’s shocking discovery that when left-wing politicians decriminalize crime, it results in rampant criminality, including shoplifting in plain view of employees and “security.”

There is no way I could improve on the poetic invective that J.J. employed to describe Mr. Rapaport’s politics and sudden enlightenment, so I won’t even try. But I would like to comment on Rite Aid as a corporation closing the Upper East Side store that Mr. Rapaport watched being looted, plus many other Rite Aid stores that were overrun with crime.

This was from the Breitbart article that JJ linked:

The security guard seen in the video allegedly told Rapaport that the Rite Aid on 81st Street and 1st Avenue has been robbed on almost a daily basis and will be closing on February 15 along with 63 other locations due to the spike in thefts.

Rapaport lamented that he relies on the neighborhood Rite Aid for his mood stabilizers and will have to travel further to another pharmacy now that the location will be closing due to theft.

You can’t blame Mr. Rapaport for being frustrated by his pharmacy closing. I wonder how its executives feel about the crime wave destroying their stores?

Well, it would appear that Rite Aid’s CEO tolerates criminal action against his stores, and will not criticize it.

This lovely letter was sent out by Rite Aid’s CEO in the wake of the George Floyd riots:

Rite Aid CEO Heyward Donigan

A Message From Our CEO

June 2, 2020

To our Rite Aid associates and customers,

Like you, I am deeply distraught and heartbroken by the tragic death of George Floyd and the events unfolding across the nation. Our communities are hurting, and I am sure many of you are hurting.

While my words won’t take away the hurt, pain or frustration, I do believe – now more than ever – it’s important to let everyone know what we stand for as a company and what I stand for as a leader.

Ok, Ms. Donigan, what do you and Rite Aid stand for? First off, she stands for word salad about racism, diversity, and empathy:

First, let me be clear: racism, injustice and intolerance have no home in the Rite Aid organization or in our communities. I do not accept anything other than the notion that diversity and inclusion make us better as a country and as an organization. I know we have many colleagues who are struggling at this time. We need to give our associates the support they need. Check in with each other, and show empathy while we all try to make sense of a situation that has decades of complication. And while I don’t have the answers, I know the worst thing we can do is stay silent.

And here is where Ms. Donigan started making promises that she would not keep:

Second, my priority is the health and safety of our associates and customers. I’m grateful to share that all of our associates are safe. To ensure continued safety, we have temporarily closed a number of stores that were damaged or put at risk so we can assess the situation and make repairs. We have also adjusted store hours across nearly all of our 2,400+ locations. The situation is evolving, but know we will do whatever it takes to keep you safe.

Abandoning her retail employees to the mercy of criminals doesn’t actually comport with her claim that the “health and safety” of Rite Aid employees was a priority. Hey, at least she states that she’s grateful to learn that no employees were killed in the stores she surrendered to criminals. (Note that she doesn’t say no employees were harmed, only that they were ultimately “safe.”

How about her empathy? She closed stores and reduced hours. Or in other words, to keep her employees safe, she simply eliminated their jobs. That’s known as “empathy” in the C-suites.

And here is where she just starts spitting out falsehoods:

Finally, if we’ve learned anything the last few months, it’s that we can come together to act on the core purpose of keeping our communities healthy and helping people thrive. We will continue to play an essential role to those we serve. While buildings and merchandise have been damaged, our commitment has not. We will fix structures. We will reopen stores. We will take care of our associates. And we will take care of ALL of our communities.

“We will fix structures.” Structures were abandoned.
“We will reopen stores.” Stores were permanently closed, and others that were not damaged were surrendered to criminals until those stores were closed too.
“We will take care of our associates.” Associates were forced to co-exist with felons looting their stores…until the associates lost their jobs when the stores closed.
“We will take care of ALL of our communities.” As Mr. Rapaport learned, Rite-Aid sided with the criminals, and then abandoned the targeted communities and their law-abiding customers.

You’ll never believe what happened next – the CEOs of 20 large retailers called on Congress to intervene in stopping criminals from re-selling stolen merchandise. Guess who was one of them…good ol’ Heyward Donigan of Rite Aid.

48 The CEO's post-Floyd note to employees could have been cut-and-pasted from a thousand others across the country. My company's CEO sent something similar.

But I believe there's a difference between making an effort to appear compassionate to an employee base that's increasingly pussified -- needing to have daddy and mommy soothe their fears that "we are a good company and will take care of you" -- and dereliction of duty when it comes to providing basic security for your stores.

I understand that these thefts are allowed to continue in CA because the chiefs will simply not be prosecuted later on. But the proper response ought not be to roll over and have security badges affixed to stumps. It should be to have the biggest, baddest security guards at every entrance and exit to show that if you try to walk out of her with so much as a lollipop without paying, you're going to be eating your own teeth and be wearing your testicles as a charm bracelet.

What is criminal is not the cloying sentimentality of post-Floyd communiques, it's the indifference to petty thugs as they destroy the whole meaning of commerce -- with the laughable fig leaf of "reparations."

All the drugstore chains are too expensive now for what you get. Dollar Twenty-Five Tree has a lot of the same or similar products; Walmart, of course, and even Target both do too. For Rxs, I have the CVS in my Target.

This is one of my biggest single pet peeves, and it's much broader than Floyd, but that's a great example of it. For one thing, without regard to the propriety of Chauvin's actions, Floyd was a real bastard when he was alive, and I reckon very few people were all that sad to see him go.

But Heyward Donigan, a rich guy who didn't know this dopehead whackjob from Adam is "heartbroken."

American society is one big drama-queen pity party where everyone is expected to exsanguinate their emotions all over the place over *every little thing.* It's pathetic. No other culture does this, because it's gay AF.

Corporate taxes are laid on top of capital gains taxes. Corporations also have a great deal of resources and incentives to minimize taxes. Properly, it makes more sense to unify all of that into the capital gains rates in some fashion.

You might be able to do a small tax decrease on individual rates in exchange for a very large rate increase on corporations, but nothing like comparable rate shifts. It's just not a very good revenue generation method.

This is the theory of how protests of this type work.

There are a lot of government/big business types that want to virtue signal and order around the little people.

But for the truckers this is life and death. And so by shutting down transport they are making the elites pay a price for what they want.

At some point then you make the elites choose virtue signaling versus having things. I guess we'll see what they care about more.

No company ever pays taxes - we pay the company's taxes.

Unless judges from local all the way up to SCOTUS stop issuing edicts about over-crowded jails and prisons, I don't know how the worms get re-canned in the foreseeable future. Even if all of the woke mayors, police chiefs, and DA's are voted out.

The ACLU, SPLC, and all the other Usual Suspects will file lawsuits to stop any new crime crackdown efforts. They'll as work hard as they did before, to get the courts to restrict new police search, pursuit, and arrest policies, to get arrested "minor" thugs out on low or no bond, and to get the convicted shoplifters and thugs who only slightly beat-up Asians and old ladies quickly released from overcrowded jails and prisons.

167 The problem with the Rite Aid/Walgreens/CVS issue is that they are large conglomerates. Sure, massive shoplifting affects the profit margin, but just close the store and raise prices elsewhere and everything will be fine. The employees who lost their jobs? Well, it just sucks to be them. Why don't they try to stop the theft? Well, they have deep pockets, and even if they win the case, the cost of a BLM lawyer dragging out a lawsuit for a roughed up thief is more trouble than they want to deal with. Shareholders, on the other hand should demand accountability, but few have enough shares to actually make noise that they'll listen to. Most of the large hedge and pension funds that are influential buy into the DIE scam. (part 1)

I remember the 70's and then the 80's. Only took several years to put the criminals back in the prisons. The key is whatever the Democrat leaders of the party want--if they think crime is hurting them, then they will turn on a dime and put them back into prison with no second thoughts. Remember Biden himself spouted tough words on the 1994 Crime Bill shepherded by him through Congress (he was Chair of Senate Judiciary).

When enough of the wealthy feel vulnerable to crime as it was in the late 60's and 70's, then they will flip the switch and their bootlicking NGO's will follow suit.

It's a tradeoff I'm willing to make.

I no longer buy into the Koch Brothers "corporations are people" type arguments.

I'm not interested in jacking up taxes for the sake of revenue, but conservative politics loses a lot of support because we are looked at as the party of Big Business. And do we get for this?

Posted by: Blago at February 11, 2022 11:38 AM (qTR92)

How can you tax corporations if they're legally not people? That is a legal distinction that allows them to own property, be sued, and be taxed.

You can't tax a car in a vacuum, you're really taxing the car owner. The corporation itself is just a legal entity that exists on paper. They are owned collectively by the shareholders.

It is a way of limiting liability.

Increasingly though, as Walter Burnham predicted, corporations are really just a way of the managerial class actually acting as owners while the shareholders get a pittance in dividends and have to rely on increase in base stock price for any gains.

One way to turn off the spigot for the managerial class is to give capital gains treatment to dividends (which means actual profitability) instead of capital gains via stock price increase.

321 276 Corporations wouldn't indulge as much in Left-wing politics if they didn't believe the GOP would always back them on issues that they care about.

They feel they have a blank check and there's almost zero consequences for throwing their lot in with the Left, and for the most part they are correct. The GOP will give them massive tax cuts and block any sort of talk about going after monopolies. Because "conservatism" for the last 20 years was basically defined as giving Big Business exactly what it wanted.

I used to work with a bunch of former truckers. Just getting the stupid thing to move forward can be tricky, depending on the exact set-up. So, now you are moving - how is the transmission set up? Do you need to push the clutch to move out of gear, then again to put it into gear (Yes, that was/is a real thing in semis)? Is there a switch on the shifting handle to access the high range gears on the same pattern?

Do not forget, even if you get it moving, now you weight 45,000 - 50,0000 pounds, with itty bitty cars driven by idiots zippy around you. Hope you dont crush someone because they are a moron.

Then, yes, there is backing up a trailer, with terribly restricted visibility.

352 That first part doesn't sound quite correct. The corporation has unlimited liability, the shareholders have limited liability(excepting that they are directly involved in running things). That would make the corporation the general partner and the shareholder a limited partner in a parternship set up.

Posted by: Red Turban Someguy
RTG, I was discussing how limited liability corporations became 'persons' in the 1800's via legal decisions. Not current law. The easiest corollary today is a Subchapter S corporation with no publicly traded stock but partners owning specific stock percentages of equity. These 'stockholders' where the stock merely reflects the equity contributed were the origins of today's contract law treating them as persons. As the numbers of individuals 'owning' the corporation grew, the courts had to invent the idea of a fictitious person to reconcile existing common law with these new hybrids.

Recently someone did the math and only AWS is making money with the rest of Amazon losing it. Which is the story of conglomerates and why they generally produce mediocre or worse results for equity holders. Google is similar, most of their 'businesses' are loss leaders designed to funnel information to AdSense. Fakebook probably has similar financial issues.

So, Amazon being broken up would have one company making money and the others would be scrambling to actually appeal to customers or go under. For the most part, applying general ideas to specifics generates suboptimal decisions.

Part of the reason these companies feel they can shit on us is they usually OWN the market they are in.

If there was healthy competition, you would see much more fear from them engaging in the culture war.

If a company like Google just decides they are going to war with conservatives, they'll still own like 99% of the search engine market.

But you are the type of conservative that is going to think we need to grovel to the C-Suite forever and never strike back.

Experience in driving under different conditions. I used to drive delivery trucks a long time ago. You learn how to handle vehicles in all sorts of weather and in varying states of repair and most importantly predict what other drivers are going to do before they do it.

You have to acquire that via actual experience as there is no other way and new drivers of any vehicle are more susceptible to accidents regardless of their reflexes, eyesight, etc.

----

Very true. I sometimes play truck simulator games (American and Euro 2). Driving forward in a straight line is about the only easy part of the job. I've accidentally knocked over street signs while going around a corner. And when I deliver a load, I almost always pick one of the (very unrealistic) delivery options that the game provides that don't require me to back up to a loading dock. The trailer does *not* want to back up straight, no matter how straight you think your can is going in reverse.

420 I used to work with a bunch of former truckers. Just getting the stupid thing to move forward can be tricky, depending on the exact set-up. So, now you are moving - how is the transmission set up? Do you need to push the clutch to move out of gear, then again to put it into gear (Yes, that was/is a real thing in semis)? Is there a switch on the shifting handle to access the high range gears on the same pattern?
........

Posted by: DoublySymmetric (iPad) at February 11, 2022 12:02 PM (TDj17)

New trucks might be different but on the ones I drove the synchronizer, the part that matches the engine rpms with the drive shaft rpms allowing you to change gears, was the first thing that quit working. From then on it was the drivers job, It's called slip shifting, no clutch involved, and it takes a while to get good at it.

I had seen others drive while I was a passenger. Luckily the manager didn't see me leave the lot as I was working out the kinks. I finally got the hang of it by the time I got to the site. Little bit stressful.

Analogy does not work well on Amazon or Google. The Bell system was conglomerated but kept operating companies separate by geographic area. Same as Std. Oil did it back in the day. Easier to deconglomerate those via anti trust into competitors.

What happened is that anti trust regulators led by libertarian lawyers and economists in the 70's decided that the anti trust std should be no harm to consumers financially rather than to competitors. This is an aberrant ahistoric take on anti trust and one that Europe ignored. So you get Amazon using AWS to support the other companies that are all designed to feed AWS. It is difficult to measure harm to consumers under such a standard as much of the harm accrues to competitors and thus indirectly to consumers.

444 Most modern US corporations like Rite Aid aren't really "owned" by anyone since the nominal owners (shareholders) are too diffuse to matter. When ownership is shared by a +million people, no one owns it enough to matter so the managers just loot the place (or let others do so).

The only exceptions to this are recently founded Tech Giants ... which strangely enough run/ran rings about their older mass-owned corporation competitors.

449 Shifting without clutching and an unsynchronized transmission are 2 different things. Synchro's do the rpm matching (get it close enough, really). But they are are physical device.

You can perform clutchless shifts on a synchronized or un-synchronized transmissions. Usually just upshifting. It's a lot harder to do on downshifting. Race car drivers will use double clutching (which was the old technique used on unsynchronized transmissions) because it is a much smoother shift that won't upset the cars balance when it is on the edge of it's traction. This is even though all trans are synchronized nowadays in cars..

450 Like you, I am deeply distraught and heartbroken by the tragic death of George Floyd and the events unfolding across the nation. Our communities are hurting, and I am sure many of you are hurting.
***
Waaah, waaaaah, waaaaaaaah!

George Floyd was a career criminal and drug addict/dealer with a badly-diseased heart. He died of heart failure, complicated by his recent ingestion of meth from swallowing a fistful of the speedballs he'd been illegally selling on the streets.

Floyd did not die because a cop put a knee on his neck. Floyd died because his heart was badly diseased and he was a junkie who'd just sucked down a bunch of amphetamine after fighting with cops. The ME's original report (before it was revised in response to thug BLM threats) said that there was no sign whatsoever that the cop's knee had injured Floyd or obstructed his airway in any way.

Blacks are killed by cops in lower percentages than whites are, despite the fact that blacks engage in far more violent crime than whites do.

The false narrative built around Floyd's death was meant to bolster the other false narrative about the "systemic racism" of cops abusing blacks.

It's all bullshit.
