Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Weekend Hobby Thread![]() I don't recall how old I was when my parents gave me a Kodak X15 camera. Probably about 9. I loved that little camera. I used it for years and it instilled a love of photography. Ah the smell of opening a package of 126 film. Do you remember the square flash cubes? Ah the good old days. You can still find the Kodak X15 around. But good luck finding the discontinued 126 film let alone getting it developed. Its hard finding retail outlets who will develop 35mm film. Growing up I had a friend who got into photography including setting up a dark room in his parent's basement. I still have a couple of his B&W 8"x10" photos somewhere in the photograph totes. Maybe when we retire we will find homes for all of those photos. I still have a vast collection of photos I took with the X15. I eventually did buy a really nice Yashica that I used for personal and business use. Then the advent of digital cameras came about and the cell phone. I still have that Yashica and a really nice point and shoot Olympus that I used on my job when I was in crappy conditions. I know that several Morons are into photography. And one of those Morons is Orangeent. He submitted a number of photographs and it was really hard to select a couple for today's thread.![]() ![]() Black & White Photo: is an interior shot of the Stockton Waterfront Warehouse before it was opened in Stockton, CA. The photos were all taken with Kodak T100 film and printed on Ilford paper if that's what you meant. All work was done at the school, I don't have any developing gear of my own. Thus, the turn to digital! I don't remember the cam settings but I was using a Pentax K1000 with a couple of different lenses. Color Photo: The mountain shot is Mt Charleston, I used a Kodak 650 The nice thing about photography is you don't need to spend an arm and a leg for some decent equipment. There are various classes one can attend at vocational schools, clubs, etc. And beauty is in the eye of the beholder anything and everything can be photographed. There are still a number of great books on the subject of photography as well as YouTube. However, it's a little hard to look at video and operating a camera when you are off grid looking at some beautiful mountain sunset. There are a number of great YouTube videos out there. I won't bore you with them. Photography as a hobby should be fun and relaxing. It's OK to strive for perfection, but remember, it's a hobby and not a livelihood. As Bob Ross once said, "We don't make mistakes, we have happy little accidents." Not sure if he was talking about painting or parenthood. I received the following sometime ago from a Moron who didn't provide a nic. So I'm not sure to attribute credit to. But it is a pretty setting. ![]() ![]() A couple of pics I snapped today at Andersonville National Cemetery. You are welcome to use them if you’d like. - f'd So tell us about your experience with photography. Are you using digital cameras? Do you still use film? Or are you just a cell phone cam person? Thank you for stopping by today. If you have some hobby tips, hobby thread ideas or some unwanted cash please send to petmorons at gmail dot com. Next week JJ Sefton will have something up his sleeve. Knowing his love for woodworking let's hope it's not a missing thumb. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

My new hobby is re-habbing a sloop that I just took over from my mom. It's never left the slip in the past eight years. I will have it on the open main by summer.
Most of the re-habbing accomplished so far has been ogling the young ladies going by on their paddleboards wearing almost nothing. *sigh* Posted by: Cicero (@cicero43) at February 12, 2022 05:06 PM (HcTHr) 9

Love photography as a hobby. Astro, birding, landscapes, florals, macro.
After the initial investment in the equipment, it pays you back with days of enjoyment out in the field. I actually have also sold many prints, which is good fun. But that's not the reason I go out and shoot. I go out and shoot because this world is an astoundingly beautiful place, even in my little corner of rural Midwest. I go out and shoot to capture bits of the glory of God. Posted by: lizabth at February 12, 2022 05:10 PM (L3Rsz) 16
Polaroid instant... not the SX-70, the plastic one that came before that. Then, a Kodak branded 110 model. Then a Pentax ME Super (which I still have along with several lenses, filters, and a flash.)
Now, it's a Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS3 and a Nikon P-90 digital. The Lumix has a Leica lens and takes pretty good photos for a camera that's over a decade old. Lastly I have my grandfather's Leica with a Leitz Elmar lens. That thing is probably 100 years old. It still works. Posted by: Martini Farmer at February 12, 2022 05:10 PM (BFigT) 17

I mentioned a few weeks about getting a new camera. I currently used a Cannon Elph 180. It's been a pretty damn good camera really. I use it for all my jewelry pics and can you believe I just learned I can adjust the brightness on it? Doh!! That was my biggest gripe was sometimes my pictures were too dark. I've been going through some old snapshots lately. There were empty photo boxes and snaps in their envelopes from the developer in cardboard boxes. So I'm trying to at least not have double the space taken up. I lack any skill with a camera. Digital cameras got me into taking pics somewhat because the touchup and crop features could fix my common mistakes but I've let that mostly lapse now that everyone else in the world takes quite good pics with their nice smart phones.

I use to print my pictures and, for a time, even had a large format camera. My Nikon F2 now sits gathering dust and honestly, I don't take many pictures using my phone or digital cameras very often.
Years ago, one of my photography professors said something to the effect of "you can experience the event, or take pictures of it". We see it all the time now. These days, it seems no matter what is going on, a majority of the viewers will whip out their phone and holler - I got that on video!! but not really experience what is occurring right in front of them. Agree. Why I take no pictures today. My story on that was canoeing with my very accomplished photographer little brother on the Middle Patuxent River. Round a tight bend we came across a stunning Green Heron on a tree branch crossing the water. "Stop the canoe"!!! he yelled as he went to open his waterproofing for the nice camera. Many years ago we did photography as a fun but serious hobby. Our initial interest was sparked by a desire to notice more of the world and appreciate it. It might be a pretty flower, an unusual arrangement of objects, the effect of light and shadows, or a random humorous scene. And it worked. Even decades later we are able to notice and appreciate what we can see and take greater delight in it.

You can still get the chemicals for developing film and it's not difficult at all. Unfortunately for astrophotography film can't take hundreds of short exposures, sort out the bad ones, and integrate it all into one long exposure.

Started with a Mamiya SLR about 1970, during college a Pentax MX, eventually having multiple lenses and 3 bodies-different films in each. ( B&W and color darkroom) Later I picked up a 4x5 but never had time to master it (job, kids). Now I have a Pentax K5 digital camera but for serious photos I'm not too swift with the computer developing. We don't take a lot of photos these days and then it is usually just a pretty flower captured on a cell phone. But we've had our photos exhibited in contests, museums and galleries. This was film work and done with rather basic gear. It's amazing what can be done with a simple Pentax K-1000 and a couple of decent lenses or an old Kodak rangefinder. (That Kodak was made in Germany and had a lens that was sharper than a flint knife edge. No meters or auto-anything. But some images I took at a distance with regular 35mm film were enlarged to capture architectural details on an historic house by professional restorers. They used those shots in an exhibit about the restoration. Think I paid fifty bucks for the used camera.)

I remember one time I was walking through a field with a friend of mine and he startled a rabbit, so he lit off after it. By the time I got the film wound and took a picture, the only thing in the shot was the field. A while back my late friend Bob told me about some B&W film that used the C41 process, so you could give it to anyone that did color film to process and print. I don't know if they still make it, but I might be tempted to buy some for this camera that I have. It's an Exacta that I didn't exactly inherit from my father. I usually use stands, but there are several different kinds, from lap stands to floor stands. I generally choose by size of the finished piece. If they're small I do them in hand but anything larger I use a frame/stand because that keeps the fabric at an even tension. Using a stand also lets me use one hand below and one above.

We'd set up for fun freeze action shots like pellets through an apple, balloons being popped, exploding pop bottles and the like. Normally, but not always, we used normal speed film, a sec or two exposure, and a sound activated light strobe. It took some experimentation to get it all right (exposure time or distance of the mic from the sound source) but it was great fun.

It's weird when your hobby is your career or vice versa. It gets confusing. My uncle was a shutterbug - worked for a TV station in Medford OR. Had a Hasselblad. His enthusiasm rubbed off. I got a Pentax P1000 for my HS Graduation present. My next door neighbors had a dark room in the back of their house, I'd just walk over and let myself in. Hours and hours could pass. While I studied graphic design in college (after bailing on architecture), photography remained a love. I bought a Nikon FE. My first job and eventually business I bought had started as a film lab. We specialized in presentations, using computers pre-mac. So, I had access to Kodak (down the street) who made pick ups like a milk man, plus our own massive E-6 processor for slides, and a slide mounter. Also animation cameras. When I bought the biz, we did product photography as well as design - keeping the photo side active. So basically any form of photography I've done. I now shoot real estate virtual tours, and my "hobby" is bird photography (sometimes I even impress myself). I don't miss the chemicals, it's amazing what can be done digitally. Now all I need to do is get a decent picture of my puppy!

Anybody ever make their own B&W photo paper? It's been ages since I did B&W, don't even know what papers are still manufactured. But in college we did platinum and palladium papers, which could look almost 3D using the right film stock. IIRC back in the 80's a teensy-weensy bottle of palladium was like $18, and you could get 2-3 sheets of paper if you knew what you were doing.

Mrs B loves taking pictures, probably one of her only true hobbies she stayed with over the years. She used to take amazing pictures off the back of the harley when we went to sturgis. I would feel her tap me on the shoulder, and it was her warning that she is going to spin around and grab a picture of something. One of the bike magazines used one of her pics on their cover. I don't know how she did it, but the pics were always good. She was using a Pentax K1000 from the early 80's, probably her first good camera, and the damn pics looked like post cards. Like everybody else these days she just uses her phone, or a small pocket digital. I still don't know how I feel about that. There's something about the pictures taken with old school film.

I got a Kodak slide scanner for my wife. It works pretty nice but it has all this assortment of frames to center your slides and get them in the scanner and it can be difficult to pick the correct one.
Posted by: banana Dream at February 12, 2022 05:57 PM (sqH0x) Back before digital was a thing, my company bought a Nikon slide scanner - it was $20k. Hard to believe how expensive shit was back then. A Kodak dye-sub printer was about the same price. Talk about a waste of materials, good grief. But, we used to charge for it and corporations would pay for it - bubble jet printers were still years away. With your scanner I'd assume most slides are in the regular Kodak paper mounts, so once you find the correct frame it should be easy. All of my slides were in plastic Loersch mounts - save for some in glass mounts which had to be hand mounted. The plastic mounts were about the same thickness as the paper - but when dealing with a slide scanner the width of a hair makes all the difference. I have dozens of carousels loaded with slides - I really should send those off to be scanned while such things are still available! One aspect of the hobby we didn't expect was how we saw different aspects of the same scene. Mrs. JTB had from the beginning a wonderful eye to notice and capture abstract images. I could do so but not as well. On the other hand, I was pretty good at creating and capturing a still life or set scene.
And we surprised each other when taking photos of the same thing because of our height difference. I'm about a foot and a half taller than Mrs. JTB and that difference in perspective could make a big difference in what was seen and captured. And led to some laughs. My wife has three generations of film. Also it scans negatives which is nice but there are a lot of different sizes of negatives too. I think I had to use three different slide frames and two different negative film frames. Also I'm not too familiar with the history of film so I didn't know what I was doing. I still have several film cameras, a Yashica MAT124 G, my favorite is a Nikon F black body. I have a wide variety of Nikor lenses and one or two specialty one's for distance. I still have a complete darkroom setup with a timer that dad and I built back in the 60's that uses vacuum tubes. Yeah, I'm that old school.
There is still a shop in town that will develop color & black and white and sells film, chemicals and paper too as well as used equipment. I have my eye on a Nikor fisheye there, still trying to justify the expense though. I keep meaning to buy one of those digital scanners for the thousands of negatives I have but that's an iffy thing. I hope it's a thing that kids are getting back into film because just like record albums, you can't capture that feel digitally. I never had much interest in digital photography or computer processing of images. Part of my interest in the hobby was learning to get the most out of film, with its limitations and properties. And since I wasn't doing action shots, I could usually take my time to set up the camera.
I'm sure the advantages of digital for professionals with a business or those who just like to mess around on a computer are many. Just not my cup of tea. Also, way back then film and cameras were a lot cheaper than even basic digital gear and computer packages. That has certainly changed. Posted by: JTB at February 12, 2022 06:19 PM (7EjX1) 243
231 CN, what a nice aunt she was. My mom got me an instruction book, needles, and rug yarn, and said "have at it." She hated to do needlework.
But she did try, once, to knit a sweater, when I was about six. She chose a beautiful periwinkle yarn and never finished. However, I still have the lovely Bernat sweaters pattern book, from the early sixties. Posted by: skywch at February 12, 2022 06:17 PM (sKjat) She was great, but very determined on these issues. By the time he's upgraded, the technology has moved into the next generation. It's crazy what you can do with the things. Dad had a darkroom and the older sisters learned to use it. The Instamatics and then the little boxes came out and I didn't see them taking any more full frame shots.
I bought an SLR and good lenses (they're still around here somewhere) and took many slides off the aircraft carriers. I stopped taking pictures when film got expensive and digital wasn't ready. Kids you know... Now I have a couple of Nikons and okay to good glass and take some nice shots. Landscapes, ocean sunrise/sunsets, and sailing boats, as well as some wildlife. Back when I had a decent film scanner I wasn't doing it. IIRC, the large format scanner I bought to do the ex's artwork had negative frame holders. I need to go to storage and get the carousels out before the ex does something crazy. I also shot a lot of concerts back when you could do that - and since Kodak was down the street I'd just give instructions to push the development and got some pretty darned good results. Posted by: JTB at February 12, 2022 06:19 PM (7EjX1) Photography is far, far less expensive now than back in the day. My Nikon FE with a Nikkor 50 1.4 was $375 in 1980. That's almost $1300 in today's money. For half that you can buy a very nice camera/lens combination, one that also shoots competent video. The beauty of digital is that you have every film type at your disposal. No need to carry around 64, 100, 400 and 1000 film speeds. And, shoot your guts out. You're not paying to process garbage shots. I remember trips where I'd have a bag of just film, and still be counting like ammo during a zombie apocalypse. Things that took hours in the dark room can now be a slider or click of a button to fix. Heck, you can even emulate particular film stock if you want. Lenses are much, much better as well, thanks to modern optical technology. I'm a purist, but sold on digital photography. One thing that concerns me about digital photography has nothing to do with the cameras or even mindset. I suspect the vast majority of images never exist outside of a computer or something similar. And we all know how hardware will become obsolete and media no longer accessible. (Try to find a way to use 5 1/4 floppy disks or even a VCR.) Yeah, I know digital images can be printed. But how many actually are? Yeah, I know the images can be backed up or transferred to the new storage media. But are they? I fear a LOT of images will be lost to future generations.

One thing I never liked about film photography is that on a roll of 36 I would almost always find several duds that I would reject. With digital the sheer volume of shots you can take gives you a lot more chances to find that great shot. As well as playing with shutter speeds and whatnot. Kodachrome is archival quality. Not all photos are. Depends partly on the paper.
I have done some time in darkrooms, still remember the smells and sounds. I've done sun proofs (direct from film to paper) that don't last long for my grandfather, who was a professional photographer. Lloyd at February 12, 2022 07:08 PM (llXky) Well, I will go tomorrow and take a good look, with a light and a magnifier, and take note of the markings. If the bore is not all etched out, I may buy it. Flea market dude. Has some Star BM's as well. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at February 12, 2022 07:11 PM (P3gRi) 396
It's just data. Copy it to punch cards. Probably only take a semi-trailer load to save an average JPEG.
So I think of the antediluvians (those before the Great Flood) and note that each person typically lived 600+ years of age. Within a generation of Adam they already have mastered metallurgy, agriculture and the fine arts. Now imagine if you had the genius that exceeded Einstein and had several centuries to perfect your craft. Now imagine the hundreds of millions if not billions of people who lived before The Flood. Imagine what our technology was 200 years ago. 500 years ago. And that is still less time than their typical working life. So Noah boards the Ark knowing there will be nothing surviving on the other side. What technology do you take aboard the Ark? I imagine the storage they had greatly exceeds what we have today, and it likely required high tech devices to manage and read it. Now go back and think about your SSD and what will be needed to convert those bits into something you can read when that is all you have. scanning slides and/or negatives, could one just load them into a slide projector, project them onto a screen, and the photograph the screen image with a decent digital camera
Might as well handwrite longhand before keystroking text. Dedicated scanners didn't seem too spendy even a while ago. One job circa 2003 was scanning "chromes" (35mm slides) and no need to wrestle with Photoshop endlessly. 385 Kodachrome is archival quality. Not all photos are. Depends partly on the paper.

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at February 12, 2022 07:11 PM (P3gRi) --- There's some good info on Spanish proof marks online. They didn't start doing date codes until the 1920s, so if you see those, you'll know it's not an WW I vintage weapon. I'd love to get one and it's on my list. Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. The cost of memory is as low as I have ever seen it.
You can get a terabyte (unthinkable, not that long ago) HD for peanuts. I see a 2TB external hard drive on amazon for $55. Posted by: gourmand du jour at February 12, 2022 07:18 PM (jTmQV) 411
Some of the singularly most beautiful photos I have ever seen were Cibachromes. The chemistry involved killed some baby whales, or so I heard.

Posted by: Commissar of Plenty and Lysenko Solutions at February 12, 2022 07:12 PM (5P6Lv) I used to do that, as a matter of course, for work at wellsite. Wrote my sample descriptions, in a shorthand style, on foolscap with a pen, then keypunched them into my striplog. Keyboard took up too much counter space in the lab. I would hook the cam directly up to the computer, and use it as an image-acquisition device. I would sooner do a little messing with my existing hardware than go out and buy a $$$ scanner, that, once my backlog of slides/negs is done, is virtually useless. Moved to a Nikon...nice enough. *****got lazy**** Just shoot from my phone now. I should go get a nice digital, and learn all the electronic darkroom skills that I don't have. North Coast Photographic in California does an absolutely stellar job of developing, scanning and printing from film. You will have to mail it to them, but it's worth it.

Company flew me out to document a $5MM messed up installation. Contractor ignored the plans and schematics and it would not even run for 5 minutes before shutting down. I spent a week crawling all over a mechanical room doing as-builts and shooting pictures of seriously messed up stuff.
I wanted to take an instant photo camera which gives you the pictures right there so you know what you've, got, very typical for forensic investigations at the time but they didn't want to spring for it and the film so they had me take the company 35 mm. So the photos come in from the developer, 5 rolls of pictures from a youth beauty pageant at some mall. Ha, ha.... Posted by: pawn at February 12, 2022 09:01 PM (Cfk8j) 425
Thanks for the photo hobby series. I started in 1963 when my high school physics teacher taught me and my friends how to use a 4x5 Speed Graphic, including how to develop its film and to make prints. I learned the Zone System (described by Ansel Adams). I shot for high school and college student publications. Even though I've enjoyed making mostly people pictures, I've never attempted to make money off of them, just been giving away the prints to make people happy. I've been using digital since 2004. Learning Lightroom and Photoshop too. Got some modern 'mirrorless' gear when I retired, shooting more than ever. Lately photos of amateur theater.
I appreciate the comment(s) about needing to distinguish experiencing the event or place versus photographing it. Cell phone cameras are popular (including myself here) by eliminating the carrying and most of the fiddling, i.e. allowing less departure from 'experiencing' the event or place. The guys out in nature with the tripod in one spot for an hour are 'in the experience' too. I've always tried with my regular cameras over the years to have their adjustments all set before organizing the people in front of the camera.
